Local Teen Takes Home 1st Place in Photo Contest

Congratulations goes out to Ste. Anne Collegiate Student Carmen Trudeau for winning first place in a photo contest and winning a Canon Rebel camera kit.

Willis College hosted a photo contest for students in Grade 11 or 12 with three categories: People, Places, or Things.

“I have been into photography since I was 13, I saved up for my very own higher quality camera and was able to purchase one when I was 15. My favorite thing to photograph is animals

and nature although I am expanding my knowledge and beginning to really like photographing people.”

“The contest was brought to my attention by one of my teachers at Ste. Anne collegiate Allison Graham. She knew how photography is a passion of mine,” said Carmen.

The photography instructors narrowed down the finalists and the top submissions were opened up to the

public for voting and put on displayed in a gallery show on April 29th at the campus in Winnipeg. Prizes where presented to the winners.

Carmen added “I would like to thank my teacher, my friends and parents for

always being supportive and giving criticism to help me get even better in photography.”

Little Funk Library Upcoming Events...

I sit here wondering what to write for this month, when I reflected on some of my parenting challenges. The dreadful battle of getting children and teens to read. Why the struggle you ask?

I ask the same, so I have taken a cool cat approach and I think I have convinced them. Here is my advice.

Take every opportunity and don’t make it a chore - think Dr Seuss. Read in a box, with a fox (your pet), riding in the car, sitting under a star, you get what I am saying. Have them help you read road signs, recipes, instructions, a manual; who would think a vehicle manual was so interesting? Guess who... a teen when a dash light turns on and they need to find why.

Make sure literature is accessible - vehicles, bathroom, closets, under couches, bedrooms... basically anywhere they are supposed to clean or go to bed... reading is such a great distraction.

Let them take control of their interests - Let them pick their own books next time you visit a library or Little Free Library. Let them explore.

If your 13 yr old wants to read Sandra Boyton board books or your grade 2 student wants to read the dictionary when they don’t know sight words yet? I say let them because the importance is in exposure to literature. Of course, offer guidance and encourage them to challenge their abilities but let them feed those “book worm interests.”

Send them to bed “earlier” and tell them they can stay up “later” while reading as long as they stay in bed. Win- win.

Embracing Healing and a Flourishing Mindset as we Move Forward Everyone has been impacted by the past two years in various ways, and as we step into what is being called, “The New Normal,” it is important to consider what that means for you. An empowering aspect is that you have control over how you move forward with intention and can carve your new path in a way that is as individual as your own fingerprint. Many people have come to realize areas in their life, career, relationships, and parenting that they want to change. When considering change, start with embracing a healing journey and focus your energy on creating a flourishing mindset.

The word healing literally means, “to make whole.” Healing is the process of restoration to health for an unbalanced, diseased, or damaged entity and organism. Take a moment to check in with yourself.

How do you feel? How is your body feeling right in this moment? How is your mind? Is your mind clear and focused, or scattered and confused?

How are your emotions? Joyful and grateful, or stressed and anxious?

Is anger, frustration, and fear part of your life? Where do you need to focus on healing yourself?

Mindfulness is one of the most effective tools to learn for this. It is the practice of paying attention to the present moment, on purpose, non-judgmentally. Once you have more clarity you can start to plan to access the supports that will benefit you, and the people you can choose to surround yourself with as you are inspired and empowered to achieve your vision.

We are in this life to learn the teachings from every experience we have, then use it all to be braver, more resilient, loving, independent, wise, and strong, while becoming the greatest version of ourselves.

Through judging, we separate.

Through understanding, we grow.

Spring is an inspiring time for growth and new beginnings. A time to move from languishing to flourishing. A time to make whole again.

Conservation and Climate’s Green

One-Skillet Mother’s Day Brunch Mom… she’s given you everything and then some, so return the favor this Mother’s Day with this single-skillet breakfast feast that covers everything she might be craving. Obviously, we start with a generous serving of bacon… and then create a rich, tangysweet cream cheese and strawberrystuffed French toast stack—cooked to golden-crisp perfection in the salty, savory bacon drippings. Serve this French-toasted sandwich with the bacon (as well as a bacon-flavored maple syrup) and your choice of fresh fruit for an utterly indulgent start for mom’s special day.

Ingredients 3 center-cut bacon slices 2 sourdough bread slices 2 tablespoons cream cheese, softened 2 strawberries, diced 2 teaspoons powdered sugar ¼ cup whole milk 1 large egg 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup ½ cup sliced assorted fresh fru Directions Instructions Step 1 Cook bacon in a medium-size nonstick skillet over medium-high until

crisp. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to drain, reserving drippings in skillet.

Step 2 While bacon cooks, stir together cream cheese, diced strawberries, and powdered sugar in a small bowl.

Step 3 Spread cream cheese mixture on 1 bread slice; cover with second bread slice. Whisk together milk and egg in a shallow dish. Place sandwich in milk mixture; turn to coat sandwich completely.

Step 4 Heat drippings in skillet over medium. Place sandwich in skillet; cook until golden and heated through, about 3 minutes per side.

Step 5 Place French toast sandwich on a plate. Add syrup to drippings in skillet; stir to combine. Strain syrup mixture through a fine mesh sieve and pour over sandwich. Serve with bacon and fresh fruit.
