So, are you looking to give your home a fresh coat of paint? It sounds easy. However, some paint defects are more obvious and harder to ignore. These issues need to be addressed as soon as possible to not only restore the painted surface, but also to investigate potential problems.

Here, we have discussed the causes of common painting problems and how to fix them and prevent future problems.

1. Blistering If you notice bubbles forming from the base of the wall paint, this is blistering. Foaming is caused by moisture being removed from the painted surface. This can be caused by painting with high humidity, painting on wet surfaces or painting too quickly. Inadequate surface preparation can also increase blistering.

To prevent blistering you must avoid painting in areas with high humidity or high dew point.

Make sure the surface is dry and free of moisture before painting. Allow enough time to dry before repainting.

2. Chalking Chalk is a loose powder that forms on painted walls. This common paint problem is caused by poor quality paint with high amounts of extender pigments. Other important factors to consider are the age, color or application of the paint.

To fix this problem remove loose paint by scraping. Paint the exposed areas and repaint the affected areas. Be sure to apply quality paint at the recommended spreading and thinning rates.

3. Cracking, Flaking, and Clumping The vein-like lines that appear through no less than one layer of paint might be weak right away, however, these cracks tend to widen and deepen to form dry jagged flakes. This ugliness can affect a variety of surfaces, both indoors and outdoors, from plaster to wood and siding.

Poor quality paint without/insufficient bacterial protection layer (anti-mold) increases the chance of growth.

To get rid of this problem clean the affected area with white household vinegar to kill mold spores. Apply a layer of anti-fouling primer. Avoid low-quality acrylic or oil-based alkyd paints and install exhaust fans in areas with high humidity to ensure proper ventilation.
