POINT REYES FARMSTEAD CHEESE COMPANY Thanks in large part to families like the Giacominis—who bought a working dairy farm in Point Reyes Station in 1959—cheese has become synonymous with West Marin. The family’s four daughters came back to the farm as adults and launched their handcrafted blue cheese under the Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company label in 2000.

“When we started, there was no other blue cheese being made in California, and very little made throughout the country,” says daughter Jill Giacomini Basch, who, like any family business owner, wears many hats.

RAMEN GAIJIN If Sebastopol’s Ramen Gaijin left things the way they were, it would still be a great place. The ramen is superb, as is the menu of salads and starters.

Friendly folks and cool vibes add to the appeal. But now the place is a Japanophile’s dream.

Owners Matthew Williams and Moishe HahnSchuman closed for three months last year and gutted the place. They demolished the woodburning oven and ripped out the redwood-slab bar top and moved it to an adjacent counter space and built a new concrete bar. The addition of beautiful reclaimed barn-wood paneling, and new tables and chairs in the lounge area make the place look downright sexy.

Drink BARBER CELLARS Mike Barber wasn't looking for a career in wine when he dropped into a San Francisco wine shop one day. He was just joking around. First, he was helped by a guy named Mike, followed by another guy named Mike. "What, do you have to be named Mike to work here?" Barber joked.

"Why, do you want a job?" Mike asked him.

"I got into it randomly, off the street," says Barber of his 10-year stint in retail wine. Later that month, he was supposed to have flown across the world to pursue a career in museum studies, but he took the wine job instead. Starting in the warehouse, he moved on to sales and was eventually sent across the world after all to visit producers in Italy and elsewhere— even filling in for the store's whisky buyer on a trip to Scotland (perhaps inspiring a single malt rye project of Barber's that's still in the works).

With the help of friends in the East Bay wine scene, Barber began making wine commercially, and recently opened Petaluma's first off-site tasting room in Hotel Petaluma. Formerly a residential hotel familiar to readers of the police blotter, Hotel Petaluma is in the midst of an ambitious renovation: a one-time clubroom and taproom has become an outdoor courtyard again, walls have fallen to reveal a grand lobby, and Barber excavated several layers of decayed flooring to reveal original Douglas fir planks in his annex tasting room.

"We're trying to keep it local here," says Barber, who specializes in wine from the Petaluma Gap area. That said, he's "not a Chardonnay and Pinot Noir kind of guy."

THE KEFIRY The Kefiry, co-owned by Thomas Boyd and Deana Dennard, is the only nonalcoholic kefir brewery anywhere. They provide probiotic drinks with high-quality flavors and nutrients.

The husband-and-wife duo were looking into probioitics back in 2008, and developed a nondairy kefir they loved. They debuted the beverage at a local fermentation festival and now run a storefront and production facility in Sebastopol. Look for flavors like guayusa

SWEETWATER MUSIC HALL You never know who’s going to show up at Sweetwater. Recently, singer Nicole Atkins was dazzling the crowd with her luminous voice when she invited surprise guest Chris Isaak to join her on the stage.

In May, an all-star lineup of the North Bay’s best musicians gathered to wish Wavy Gravy a happy 80th birthday. That’s how it goes at the Mill Valley institution, originally a venue opened in 1972 and rejuvenated in 2012 with the help of Grateful Dead founding member Bob Weir and other supporters.

Attracting the attention of nationally touring artists doesn’t mean that Sweetwater has to sacrifice local charm.

Music DEAN BIERSCH Sonoma’s Dean Biersch (opposite page) is already in the beer hall of fame, but he deserves credit for growing Sonoma County’s music scene, too.

In the early 1980s, he visited Hopland’s Mendocino Brewing Company’s brewpub. Back then, brewing beer onsite and selling direct to the public were entirely new in the United States.

“A light bulb went off in my head,” he remembers.

“I knew this was going to be a big deal.”

He put together a business plan for a brewpub and along the way met brewer Dan Gordon, who had just completed a prestigious five-year brewing program in Germany. The two hit it off, and Gordon-Biersch was born. The pair opened their first brewpub in Palo Alto in 1988. San Jose, San Francisco, Pasadena and Honolulu followed. Then they added a production brewery in San Jose, and Gordon-Biersch beers were sold in stores.

The two eventually sold off the restaurant side of the business, and Biersch looked for new opportunities in Sonoma County, where he lives now. As he watched the craft-beer industry grow, he decided to open a business that not only showcased his own beer but those from the exploding scene. And he wanted to offer a live music venue, too. He opened HopMonk Tavern in Sebastopol in 2008, and locations in Sonoma and Novato over the following years. The businesses are great showcases of local music and traveling bands alike.

Last year, Biersch bought Penngrove’s Twin Oaks Tavern. It’s not a HopMonk replica but an enhanced version of what was already there—a lively music venue and bar with more than 90 years of history. “It’s just a great roadhouse,” Biersch says.

Biersch is now working on the debut of a new beer and music festival planned for later this year.
