Dear Editor 伟 The District Plan.

Your coverage of the draft local plan, as “it affects Kibworth, is “most comprehensive and very welcome,but one aspect has not as yet been covered.

That is the attitude/actions of our other District Councillor,Mark Williams.

Reportage of Cllr Mrs Sheila LeslieMiller「s decision has been extensive,but what contribution has Cllr Williams made to the monumental decisions being made for our village?

Clr Williams did not attend any of the special _planning meetings of October/November/December 1994 and January 1995,as did other district councillors Wwho are _not planning committee _members, but Who, nevertheless,made their views very clearly known in support of their villages.

Thus, at no time during this period did he support in the Council Chamber the known views of the people of Kibworth with regard to the proposed massive new housing development. Indeed, after the January 1995 meeting. when 550 new houses were allocated to Kibworth,Cllr Williams was subsequently to be heard at a Beauchamp Parish Council meeting supporting this allocation.

However,he did attend the special council meeting at Harborough District Council on 28 February to propose a motion that a new distributor road and new “railWay “bridge _in the Warwick/Wistow Road area be built within thrces years of the new housing development, knowing full well that such a proposal has always been dependent on the building of 750 houses not 530 houses!! He then continued by further proposing that there should be no new housing in Kibworth. Brave words when he also knew that his colleagues had already made the decision as far as HDC is concerned, on the allocation of S50 new houses for Kibworth.

A short time ago,endquiry of the Conservativye Association in Market Harborough produced the reply that ClLr Williams had been“working behind the scenes“for Kibworth. I believe your readers will now be able to judge what these“behind the scenes“ activities actually achieved and will still realise the very real dangers that continue to lie ahead for our village.

人 I am writing to express my doubt on the justification of Cllr Mark Williams「 defence of Cllr Sheila Leslie-Miller in the “Harborough Mail“,when he says she strives to make Kibworth a better place for it「s residents. If that were so,how could she possibly believe 550 new houses,en-bloc,could possibly be of benefit to its residents.

Ido, however, agree with Cllr Williams when he states that“more traffic will come.from the northern side and that the traffic is going to crucify the centre of Kibworth Beauchamp“。Baut unlike him, I do not think a new linking road between Fleckney Road and Wistow Road will solve the problem. It may well relieve the Warwick Road of traffic requiring to get to the A6 for journeys outside the village, but will do nothing to overcome the Problem of local trips to the village centre.

Dear Editor, 伟 Last month, I attended the Kibworth Beauchamp Parish Council meeting where the Local.Plan was on the agenda. I came out of the meeting realising that if anything was going to be done to prevent the development from taking place, it Was us, the villagers, who were going to have to do itt I spoke to several others who had attended the meeting and they agreed、As a result, we held an impromptu meeting where views were eXchanged and a committee was formed.

The committee met a week later and it was decided that we should call ourselves KEEP KIBWORTEH RURAL and send out questionnaires to every house in order to gauge the overall view of the proposed Local Plan.

These leaflets will be delivered very shortly by local volunteers、Please spare a few minutes to complete them so that we can obtain an accurate understanding of all the villagers「“ thoughts on this important issue.

MarcR 1995 Dear Editor 参 Our home was recently added to the list of Kibworth burglaries - a most distressing occurrence. It has been made worse by three factors; one, that we were asleep at the time; two,a brazen entry method; and three, that our“deterrents「a pair of dogs renowned for their capacity to bark at the slightest noise or disturbance - never made a murmur.、This was despite the intruder(s) entering their sleeping quarters.

The dogs「“behaviour had been oddly subdued for two days prior to the breakin, leading us to assume that they were “「quietened「“in advance (bizarre as this may seem).

We were obviously complacent about our dogs「“ability to warn and protect us and the house, and this letter is to alert other dog owners to the situation.

Dear Editor 伟 Returning to Kibworth from Smeeton after a social pint on Sunday night at I, together with someone else I was giving a lift to, were witness to the following SCene.

I had stopped at the junction of Smeeton Road and Kibworth High Street and saW,almost opposite on the far pavement a _body on the ground surrounded,and being kicked by,six others.What to do7 We both got out of my car and I shouted across the road, “Hey what「s going on7“ At this point we hear the leader of the gang shout “Time to go lads“.:. The pitch of voice gave me the impression of someone aged no more that 14 years old. It was dark, and, even with the street lighting, I could only make out shadows. Off they ran leaving the victim curled up on the Pavement.、We ran across the High Street and the chap with me went after the departing gang.、 TI asked the person on the ground“Are you alright?“ He got up slowly and started to walk away from me without saying anything. I said,“Look are you OK, I only want to help you“.

Mrs Nellie Potte O0BITUARIES Mrs Dorothy Badcock It is with deep regret that we learn of the sudden death of Dorothy Badcock (nee Copson) of Kibworth Harcourt.

Dorothy, known to her brothers and numerous friends simply as Do, was proud of her Harcourt lineage and alWays Participated in village activities with tremendous enthusiasm. She helped with fund raising activities for numerous charities, and was a member of the original Distribution Team for the Kibworth Chronicle.She loved flowers, and served on the Church Flower Guild for many years.

Her marriage to a local Nurseryman, Frank, took place at St Wilfrid「s in 1970.

Dorothy was a familiar figure as she walked Ben, her Cairn. She will be missed but always remembered by all who were Privileged to know her.

It is with 一 荣: 扬 reath 训 t河 brought up,married and living in Kibworth all her life.、She would recall the days when the High Street was a sandy road and walking was the way to get aboutl Many will remember Nellie for her involvement with village life - teaching for many years in St Wilfrid「s Sunday School, a“dinner lady「“at the Infant and Junior School, a member of the Mothers「 Union and, of course, a regular worshipper in St Wilfrid「s Church.

MNellie and her husband, Harry (who died in 1979) will also be remembered by the writer, and others, for the quiet, kindly way in which they offered practical help and friendship to younger couples.

She leaves a son, Philip, daughter-inlaw,Diana,grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, to WwWhom we eXtend our sympathy.

THE TALKING CHRONICLE

The Royal Leicestershire Society for the Blind dispatches, on a monthly basis, the recorded cassettes of all items printed in that month「s“Chronicle“and, on their arrival by post, I immediately deliver them to local residents who have requested this service - Which is totally free of charge.

Return postage to the Leicestershire Society for the Blind is pre-paid by them, and address labels to this effect are attached to the Ccassettes.

The numbers in Kibworth are not large (only siX residents receive them every four weeks), but two Ccassettes are delivered to local nursing homes where a number of residents take advantage of these recordings, and I have been informed that there are tapes delivered to Kibworth 人 District residents from the Leicester headquarters on Margaret Road: At the moment I am unable to discover the exact number of people taking advantage of this directly.、,Overall it could be sizeable, Perhaps recipients could let me know2 I have two tape recorders always available for anyone wishing to start receiving these talking newspapers,and will gladly assist anyone who requires this service. KIBWORTH HARCOURT HISTORIC VILLAGE TRAIL Kibworth Harcourt Conservation Society is delighted to announce the launch of the Kibworth Harcourt Historic Village Trail The leaflet has been produced _in “_collaboration with Harborough District Council. Additional support has been Provided by Kibworth Harcourt Parish Council and the Countryside Commission. The leaflet forms part of a series for local villages and copies are widely available in libraries. museums and public places throughout the District.

The launch took place at 11.30am on Thursday 9 March in the Long Barn at the Rose & Crown Inn on Leicester Road, Kibworth Harcourt. Councilior Richard Marriott, Chairman of Harborough District Council,kindly agreed to inaugurate the Trail District Councillors Sheila LeslieMiller and Mark Williams,County Councillor John Waite,and Kibworth Harcourt Parish Council, as well as the Society“s committee were invited to the launch and welcomed by Eddie Roberts, the Society「s chairman. Hugh Colinson, the artist responsible for the drawing of the windmill on the front of the leaflet, and his wife, were also invited.

The Rose & Crown marks the beginning of the trail which takes walkers on a delightful excursion through this ancient south Leicestershire village, lying primarily to the east of the A6, mid way between _Market Harborough and Leicester.、The leaflet includes nine line drawings of some of the 20 listed buildings and notable features,and conjures up images of a thriving coaching and agricultural community, drawing on fascinating historical anecdotes: Thomas Cook, the trayel and tourism pioneer, used to break his journeys at the red brick Congregational Chapel; the Jarrow Marchers rested in the village during their long march to London in 1936; the village housed a major eighteenth century theological centre and also boasts a Romano-British burial mound or early fort.、 Interesting architectural features are indicated and, although the leaflet is not intended to be a definitive historical document,it provides a brief but

KIBWORTH HIGHSCHOOL PARENT/TEACHERS ASSOCIATION Over 40 parents and staff members attended a Wine tasting evening on Tuesday 7 March in the Community Centre Lounge.

The evening was organised by a group of PTA members who prepared a delicious Ploughman「s supper,which went down very well with the Italian wines provided

by Evington Wines.

Their representative gave a fascinating talk on the wine producing regions of Italy and on the merits of each individual wine.

There was an opportunity to Purchase a feW bottles and a chance to win a bottle in the raffle. All proceeds from the evening went to the new sports hall fund.

Some cautionary advice from John Gilding As the daffodils and crocuses beckon the warmer days and the sun makes its first fleeting appearance, we are inclined to begin to think about the annual 「springclean“- it「s a time when many people contemplate clearing out cupboards and attics, when it can be tempting to throw out the old, the worn out and the obsolete.

Despite the publicity of the BBC TYV“5 hntigxdes Roadshow,which has done so much to alert people to the possible value of all sorts of bygones, we still hear stories of individuals discarding valuable items.

This is, I suppose, partly a result of the eXtraordinary range of objects which are now of interest to collectors and dealers.

Three examples may sound a cautionary note toanyone planning a “clear out「.

Amongst a recent consignment to our Roman Way salerooms we discovered a rather unusual typewriter: the basic mechanism was supported on a mahogany base, and the ribbon was threaded from a central reel serving the 32 keys.The labe1l “Moya, Made in Leicester“emphasised that this was something a little out of the ordinary.

Hidalgo Moya,a SpanishAmerican had had some involvement in the typewriter industry in America and came to Britain in 1902 with his own designs, anxious to manufacture the first English machine,of what we now consider to be conventional, design.、With the backing of a Leicester businessman, a small factory was established in Garton Street (now the site of Leicester Royal Infirmary Maternity Wing) and, in early 1903, the first Moya No. 1 machine came onto the market,priced at five guineas.

We learned that several examples of the more sophisticated No.、2 typewWriter, manufactured shortly before the business took the name of the Imperial TYypewriter Company,had appeared in sales at Christies, but our machine appeared to be the first example of the prototype model to be recognised and offered at auction.

Following enquiries from as far afield as SwWwitzerland, our typewriter sold for #520, thus establishing a market price and having enabled us to rewrite a small chapter in the story of our industrial heritage.

A painting of Shipping in the Port of London was discovered by one of our valuers in a farm attic,It had clearly been discarded many years before, probably as a Iesult of a tear across the canyas.

MNevertheless the work was recognisable as that of Charles James De Lacy, an eminent seascape artist: De Lacy ( 1885-1930) had, as a young man, served as a naval engineer and his best paintings feature shipping: his scenes of the Thames are enviably well defined and accurately depicted.

Our painting,despite the obvious need for substantial restoration, sold for f#1200, to the amazement of the original owner.

We hope that this account will spur Teaders on to see just what is tucked away in the attic, ff any further encouragement is needed perhaps I should add that the months of March, April and May are amongst the busiest in the auction sale year.、With the improving weather, many People begin to think about redecorating and refurbishing, so antique furniture and works of art are in great demand, whilst collectors and enthusiasts continue to scour the auction rooms searching for the rare or unusual.。 May your 1993 springclean prove to be a profitable experience!

Included in the same sale earlier this year were a pair of rather sad looking Teddy bears: their plush was faded and worm, their seams frayed and their paws long ago replaced。Clearly the bears had been much loved! They had been gifts to twins sisters in 1906 and were in effect twin bears,each being 16 inches tall, having characteristic long noses and slightly humped backs; both significantly retained the original Steiff metal “button「 label clipped into the left ear. Margarete Steiff「s small factory in Wurttemberg, Germany had been established in 1894 making felt toys; Teddy bears were manufactured from around 1904, so this meant our“twins「“ could be counted amongst the earliest bears. Inevitably, despite their poor condition our bears attracted a great deal of interest and realised f2050.、happily the“twins「“were purchased by the same collector and won「t be separated.

In history we did a castle project and, as a part of that, Imade a model castle.

I made it ffom two cardboard boxes and four.round tubes. I cut one box in half and put a round tube on each corner.

I then papiermached it all.

When it dried I painted it grey and started to make the insides, a table, a bed. benches,a fire,toilet,shields and tapestries.

When the paint dried I gave the castle a stony「 look with a marker pen.

I then put the insides in. I took it to school on Monday morning for my history lesson.It took about three days to make.

Congratulations to lst Langton Cubs for winning the Cubs trophy at the Harborough District Scouts and Cubs Swimming Gala held on 5 March at the Wigston Pool - eight cub packs from the District taking part in the event.

15 Cubs from the Langton pack took Part, with many of their families present (sweltering in tropical conditions!) to cheer them on. Special thanks are due to the Cub Leaders, Sue Lawrence,Chris Hardy and Sara Whatton,also Hilary Pollard (parent) for their hard work coaching the boys.

The two Year 6 classes from Kibworth Primary School went on a Discovery Day to St.Martin「s Cathedral in Leicester.

First of all we drowe to the Cathedral and were sorted into ten 2groups. Leicester Grammar were there too。 TI was in group four with three other friends, Sarah Lock, Sian McDonald and Natalie Love.

There was Calligraphy,Quilling, Puppet Making,Mosaic (with rice2), Stained Glass Windows, Curve Stitching and Bookmark Making. Our group got called to make puppets.、Halfway through, we went to see the organ- This organ has 3000 pipes, going from six inches to thirty feet. We gathered loads of information and then the “bell rang for lunch.

Everyone was starving.、 After lunch we finished our puppets and then went on a tour of the Cathedral, with a quiz sheet to fill in as we went round “We saw beautiful gold carvings and lovely stained glass windows on our tour、After this we had an opportunity to go to the Cathedral “shop“「 and bought a few things.

Just before oar trip was over,we climbed 115 steps to get to the belfry、We heard a bell go.It was VERY LOUDY It was a very memorable trip and well worth goingGemma Simons Kibworth Primary School

Today I went to Leicester Cathedral .

On the bus Mrs Wass gave us a small Piece of paper saying our group number and our name and we stuck it on our jumpers. I was in group 7. When we arrived we all took part in a prayer, read by the priest, and then our group went off to do some quilling.、Quilling is when you have long strips of paper and a tool with 2 splits in the end.You put the paper in between the 2 slits and turn the tool around、When you have coiled the paper, you carefully take it out of the splits and it should be a “roundish「 sort of shape.You then pinch the ends to make the shape of your choice.!

After this activity we went up the steps to the large organ and listened to a few Pieces of music,And then it was time for lunch.Towards the end of our lunch we had a quiz to do, while everyone finished Iunch.

We then had a tour, during which we Could ask questions about the carved stones and pictures.We were then able to dosome more quilling.

Afterwards we went up to the bell tower,with roughly 178 steps to get there! When we got into the bell tower someone pulled a few bells, which nearly Knocked out my eardrums! We then went back to the centre of the Cathedral and showed all the other groups what we「d been doing.

Then it was time to return to school on the bus. I thought the day was amazing and I would go back there if I had the Ehance. I loved it and I learnt a lot.

“THE MOVIE GAMBE〉 Aaron Smith from Saddington and Sarah Herrick of Fleckney, both aged 10 and pupils at Fleckney Primary School, have been picked to take part in the Movie Game,a quiz programme about films and videos.

FOXTON SOCIETY - THE YEAR AHEKAD

Following our successful AGM evening,the Foxton Society has been looking to the year ahead. The Society aims to organise and hold events that further promote the community spirit within the parish, as well as keeping an eye on local development to help protect and improve _our pleasant rural environment.

Al1l “residents _of Foxton are automatically members of the Society, but obviously, in order to get things done, there is a group of active committee members. We have seen some changes this year in the post holders of our committee.Debbie Billington is now the new Chairman and Bill Bray our Vice Chairman,Mike Ward continues as Secretary and Dilys Few as Treasurer.、We haye created a new post of Press Officer to help keep our activities well publicised and reported. Frances Smith,wWho has only recentlIy moved to the village,has taken on this role.

In the past, the Society has organised events such as a village treasure hunt and Christmas party. We have taken part in other village events such as the Shoulder of Mutton Fun Day. But our work also has a continuous side, such as keeping an eye on planning applications and developments in the village to ensure that they maintain or improve our village landscape. We also hold regular“litterpPicks“ to keep the village clean and tidy.

Last year, Foxton was runner up in the Leicestershire Best Kept Village Competition and we would like to think that the Society played a part in this achieyvement.

This year, we thought it would be wise to try and indicate our plans as soon as possible to give our members some idea of the year ahead、In terms of events, We are Teady to stage our Family Quiz night on

Hall. We are hoping that residents will arrive between 7.30pm and 8.00pm and organise themselyes into teams. There will be a small entrance fee per person to help raise enough cash for the prizes. The questions will be on a range of subjects and aimed at 10 year olds and up.

Refreshments will be on sale and there will also be a bar.

We shall follow the family quiz by organising a celebration of VE Day on Monday 8 May.、 We hope that residents will bring their own picnic and“party“ on the recreation ground: games,kite flying, refreshments and costume.We will compliment these activities with a display of memorabilia from the War Years inside the Robert Monk Hall, but of course, we wWill be relying on members to contribute articles!

In mid-June there will be a guided “historical“walk around the village and we _hope to stage a WaterWays Art Exhibition sometime later in the summer.

A Barn Dance has been suggested for the Autumn,but some concern over Whether or not the residents will get out their gingham _and dungarees has been eXpressed. We hope to end the year with another Christmas Party compete with family entertainment and Father Christmas In amongst this packed programme committee members will be out with their litter picking sticks and supporting other village functions and events. We would like to ensure that our activities do reflect the ideas and wishes of our members - the whole parish. If you have a comment or an idea to put forward, the committee will be very glad to listen. You might even like to join us! We knew it had to come sooner or later. It is not often we get through a winter without any snowW _or ice.

Fortunately, when it arrives so late, it does not linger long. It just added to the eXcess of water on the village fields which can hardly take any more. Some of the gateways make for uncomfortable Passage,since the ground has been churned up by numerous bovine feet.

The bridleways are,perhaps,wWorst affected as the horses hooves sink deep into the saturated earth leaving a slimy sticky clinging mass.

There was indisputable evidence of this on the Rambling Group「s recent foray into the Welland Valley from Drayton led

by George Smith. It turned out to be, pPossibly, the worst muddy conditions yet eXxperienced、Slipping and sliding, a large turnout made its way across swimming fields and tracks to the ankle deep marsh that was once the Welland Valley Railway.、With the wind blowing strongly towards the party,it was possible to observe a foraging fox nosing its way in the adjacent field.

SurprisingIy,the Welland, though flowing strongIy,was confining itself within its banks despite heavy overnight rain,a tribute to the dredging of a few years ago.Then up the steep hill where a wonderful view of the Valley and its villages was obtained from the old Stokes farm buildings. A return, via Neville Holt,was thankfully across grass on the hill top. The group was regaled with the sight of one of its「 senior members playing tag with a teasing wind that kept whipping his hat away as he reached it. Unsympathetically,the rest simply fell about. However, apart from one particularly muddy backside and the Problem of fishing out the aforesaid member from between a hedge and back fence into which he had inexplicably managed to take a dive,the group returned unscathed, from the eXcursion, excluding muddy ankles.

The previous February walk, led by Tony Bell from Theddingworth to Hothorpe by way of the Canal,had Proved less muddy,but equally wet, and this was aggravated by two showers, one very heavy.、So it was a damp group that found its way back to the local hostelry in Theddingworth. A good fire and some liquid refreshment, augmented by snacks, soon got everyone into a sociable and contented mood.

It must have been effective because they all turned up for the mudlarks a fortnight later.

The, dare I say it, summer season starts of 5 April when Keith Davies leads a ramble from Hallaton and Lois Harrison takes the Group to Bulwick and Deene Park on 19 April.

LINES FROM LAUGHTON Peaceful and beautiful.These are the words which immediately spring to mind when thinking of Laughton. It「s a small village with an air of constancy and timelessness.

The busiest day of the week is Wednesday.In the morning, Barry, the wandering fishman,pays a visit. Every other Wednesday afternoon, there「“s even more excitement when the Mobile Library arrives. Thank heavens for this service ….. the luxury ef being able to walk down the lane to choose new books, to eXchange a few words with the friendly Oliver and library assistant and, as an added bonus, to catch up with the village news. Yes, Wednesdays are Usually the social highlight of the week.

However, February has been a very busy month in Laughton.

On the 7 February, there was a village meeting to organise the village fete - which takes Place on Saturday 1 July、 Because Laughton is so small, the fete is only held once every four years, but is a really big Ooccasion.

On Wednesday 15 February,the Westerby Basset Hounds,the oldest footpack of its kind in this country, met at Laughton.、A field of about 30 people set off and,after a wet boggy afternoon, managed to squelch back to the village for a substantial Hunt tea.

2 The annual Pancake Party was held at Laughton House, home of Mr & Mrs John Walker. This is a popular fundraising event which has taken place since 1981 in aid of St Lukes Church. An enormous amount of pancakes,with a variety of delicious fillings, were cooked and served by the Walker family and Dot Herbert, and raised a very creditable f280.

February may be the shortest month of the year, but it「s certainly been the busiest one for quite a while!

The speaker at the meeting, held in the Community Centre on 15 Februaty was Ken Day who gave an illustrated talk on “Shop Signs of Bygone England.

He pointed out that it was in the Victorian era that shopkeeping became more prominent and progressive. OVer the years,and through competition, tradesmen began to exhibit signs outside their shops in order to attract the public.

Most shops Were specialist in character and were owned by individuals who Produced many attractive and ingenious designs to promote their Wares.

He said that, if a watchful eye is kept, some of these signs can still be seen in some of the older streets. Altogether a most interesting talk which was followed afterwards with coffee.

The next meeting is on 15 March when the speaker will be Peter Bunney who will talk about“Cartoons and Caricatures「..

ALLIANCE + LEICBESTER KIBWORTH BAND The Alliance + Leicester Kibworth Band is now back to full strength with 14 new members and are rehearsing every night for the Midlands Area will decide which Band will represent the Midlands for the All England Finals to be held in London in October.、The Band won this title in 1965 and again in 1967.

They recently had a warm-up at Milton Keynes in an open competition to get rid of “stage nerVe8「.

On Saturday 25 March, the Band undertakes its first engagement of the year at Christchurch Church in Clarendon Park Road,Leicester, at 7.00pm (tickets are available).

April Fools Day will complete the fund raising idea when a cow will enter the paddock opposite Meadowbrook Garage in the High Street to decide the winning area by placing a “plop「、The winner will receive f#250.、Tickets are available from, Spar Off Licence, The Old Swan and Granny Smiths,f1 each.

On the weekend of 22/23 April, BBC Radio Leicester will join with the Band to Produce a neW cassette and a musical documentary to coincide with the Band「s 90th Anniversary.

WILDLIFE RESCUE Injured wildlife in our area is assured of a second chance in life. Wildlife Rescue run by Angela Downham and Hedgehog Rescue rIun by Jean Bird and Lynne Yarwood,are two RSPCA approved Iescue and rehabilitation centres based in Kibworth.

Hedgehogs, collared doves, muntjak deer, a lapWing and a fox hayve been healed and returned to the wild since these two centres have been open.

This voluntary work is funded by Angela, Jean and Lynne with the help of fund raising events. The picture shows Angela and Jean at a recent coffee morning at Stuart Court where they had a combined stall to help raise much needed cash to buy special heating pads for sick and orphaned animals.

Jean Coleman, formerly of Tur Langton, has recently been appointed consultant Clinical Psychologist for Berkshire.

Jean「s most notable success, Which has brought her international recognition, is her work on autogenic training.。 Autogenic training is a very powerful form of Psychotherapy and relaxation originated by Dr Wolfgang Luthe who trained Jean between 1979 and 1982. This technique was used extensively on patients with all levels of emotional difficulties and it also met with considerable success in the sporting world.

Jean「s interest in sports psychology dates back to 1974, when she was invited to act as mental training advisor to the National Shooting Squads at Bisley. This entailed training the Olympic squads to cope with the mental pressure of top level sport events.

It does not need me to remind Chronicle readers of the continuing success that our Shooting squads have attained at this level.

Jean enjoys being given the opportunity to talk about her work on autogenic training and psychology to those other than the medical profession. One of her invitations Was to speak at a Confederation of British Industry Conference on Stress in Industry.

For all her success,Jean has never forgotten the importance of the educational grounding which she received at Church Langton Primary School and Kibworth Beauchamp Grammar School. She firmly believes that the standards set by these two schools were instrumental in attaining her objectives.

Jean still keeps up her local links by regularly visiting her mother, who still lives in Tur Langton, and being gently coerced to help with the usual fund raising eventsl

ORTH ART LOVERSSOCIETY It was“full house“at the Community Centre at the February meeting of the Society、It was a welcome return visit, as a speaker, of local artist Joan Roobottom, Who teachers Art at an evening class at the Centre, and is also Chairman of the Society.

Her talk entitled “Colour is MYy Business“and accompanied by slides, showed the many and varied works of Mrs Roobottom. Embracing all mediums and subjects, portraits, still life, landscapes, monoprints and collages,it was an evening greatly enjoyed by all members.

Refreshments were served and donations taken for CARE.

In January Mrs Yvonne Smith (Illston W Imember) demonstrated the fine art of 3D decoupage. Several members Were able to try this art form themselves、The competition for the evening was for the best piece of work done on the evening and this was won by Mrs Karen Senogles.

In February, Mr Rob Smith (Yvonne「s husband) showed members how he accomplished his very unique form of airbrush painting. The competition for a scenic postcard was won by Mrs Flora James.

CAPTAINS DRIVE-IN AT KIBWORTH GOLF CLUB Geoff Towers and Marjorie Townsend were well supported by Club Members at their Drive-in on Sunday 19 February 1995.

The captains are looking forward to a very busy year and have this year chosen to support the Kibworth Medical Trust in order to help provide more medical equipment to assist the District Nurses in their work with patients in Kibworth and the surrounding area.

Mark Walker is the Junior Captain for the year and Barry Cooper and Pat Squires the respective Vice Captains.

On Sunday 26 February, Jungshin Taekwon-do held its「 regional tournament in Kibworth at the Village Hall. Clubs from throughout Leicestershire took part, with Kibworth being especially well represented、The tournament consisted of individual sparring contests of one and a half minutes for the adults and one minute for the juniors. Points are scored for techniques ie,punches,back-fists etc., with the hand and various kicking techniques which have to be delivered correctly to legal targets on the opponents body with controlled power.

The students are split into age, rank and seXx. Sometimes, as happened on Sunday, Lisa Greening of Kibworth had no other female competitors of her age and grade,so she sparred in the boys section and, just to show that being of the SO called weaker seX doesn“t have to be a handicap, Lisa won the gold medal in that section.

At the end of the tournament,the medals were presented to the individual winners and then the club totals were added to find the club with the most medals on the day.、Once again, Kibworth gained the most individual medals and retained the overall winners trophy which the club won at the last tournament in October 1994.

KIBWORTH CRICKET CLUB With Kibworth Cricket Club having secured their first ever Leicestershire County League Division One title last year, together with the 2nd XI collecting the division four title, 1994 proved to be the most successful for many a year with the only disappointment being the defeat in the Courage County Cup final at Grace Road. Kibworth have responded well through the winter to replace former county player and club captain Peter Booth who has finally decided to retire, bringing to an end a very distinguished Playing career. Peter will, however,be retained by the club in a coaching capacity.、 His replacement,and also installed immediately as club captain, W训 be the very experienced and respected Russell Cobb, who moves to Kibworth from Leicester Ivanhoe. Russell is the present Youth Development Manager for Leicestershire County Cricket Club and has, in fact,been associated with the county club as a player and in his present position since his school days. This acquisition should, once _again, demonstrate the positive ambition that eXists within the club to ensure that Kibworth continue to build on the solid foundations already in place, as we aim to become the Premier Club in the County.

Sadly our popular South African, Brendan Fourie, will not be with us this season. Brendan had a fantastic season smashing the league record by capturing 70 wickets (the previous record of 69 wickets was held by former Kibworth player Dale Griffith). Brendan will be sadly missed by everyone at the club, although we do hope to see him from time to time as he may (not confirmed) take up the offer to become the professional for the Grange Cricket Club in Edinburgh.

Our replacement for Brendan,however, we feel will also be an exciting acquisition and entertain club members and supporters through the summer. He is a 22 year old Antiguan and a Curtly Ambrose look-a-like, Colin Joseph,Colin was hoping to play at Kibworth last season and has been known to us for some time - we wish him well in his first seasonl

The rest of the club has a familiar look to it with John Peat continuing as Saturday 2nd XI with Jeremy Watetfield installed as his number It is anticipated that the 2nd XI should see some of the clubs promising youngsters emerge this season. One to watch is sure to be 15 year old wicket-keeper, John Hodges.John represented England under 14“s last season and already has been included in the national under 1S“s squad for this season - we wish John well.

John Bleby and Graham “_Bayes continue as the Sunday tst and 2nd XI captains respectively,wWhile Kibworths very own evening league champions will have, as ever,Paul Abbott looking after their best interests, both on and off the field.

Early season fixtures begin on Easter week-end with a friendly for the 1st and 2nd XI against Isham.、The league season will start on Saturday 6 May with the 1st XI entertaining Loughborough Carillon Old Boys and the 2nd XI travelling in the opposite direction.

A diary date to Iemember will be 10,11 and 12 July when Kibworth once again play hosts to the Leicestershire 2nd XI as they entertain Surrey.

Finally, the Club would once again like to offer the Hand of Friendship to anyone who would like to become a social member of the club and enjoy the excellent facilities and busy social life that exists within the club. Re-cycling Code

When using any recycling facility, there are a feWw points to remember.

Following these points will help maintain the recycling sites,ensure that good quality material is collected and make the site pleasant for others using the facilities and the people who live nearby.

Rimse bottles, jars and cans before placing in the bank.

Remove tops off all bottles.

Squash cans and plastic bottles, if Possible:.

The County Council is committed to achieving the 25% recycling target set by central Government.

It「s policy of recycling is outlined in it「s recycling strategy Rinse and Return Already, plans outlined in the strategy are being introduced.

These have included a Garden Waste Composting scheme, which is accepting materials such as hedge clippings,grass cuttings and garden prunings at some of the Recycling and Household Waste Sites.This material is shredded and composted to produce a peat-free soil improver,called County Compost.

5 Cllr Knott reported that he had received a complaint from Roland Smith that the pavement outside his property at the bottom of Albert Street was again waterlogged. The County Council has already tried to alleviate this situation, obviously Without success!

HIGH ADVENTURE IN SNOWDONIA A large crowd gathered at the Old grammar School in Kibworth last Friday to bid farewell to three teams of ventures and rangers who left on this year「“s High Adventure Challenge. This invited teams of five or six members to work together over a 48 hour Period always with an eye on the clock, otherwise points will be deducted、This year three teams took up the challenge, not knowing until their arrival where the exploits would take part.、 As the coach went west of Birmingham they began to correctly guess it was in the Snowdonia area this year.、Arriving just after midnight, erecting your tent, in bed by 2 a m but up and about less than 4 hours after with several miles walking that day all makes for a real test of stamina and cooperation. Whilst a little more rest was possible on the second night, Sunday sorted out the strongest who could stay the course. All Kibworth「s members did and we congratulate the three teams:-Mark Calvert, Leanne Pritchard, Joanne Callis, Paul Baxter, Thomas Ireland and Mark Tunneycliff--Stewart Dorey, Kay Freestone, Christian Dwyer, Becky CallisyHugh Williams, Lucy Ireland--Rachel Bailey, Paul Rave, Antony Dobson, Brian Taylor, Kirsty Weatherill, Eddie Weston.、The first two teams shared 7th place out of the 44 entries with 175 points.、One of the Chronicle team who was on the challenge, Mart Calyert, was unreserved in his estimation of how useful and rewarding this annual event is,He especially commented on the teamwork skill required.
