Drinking is not a requirement for a great college experience

By Ryan Ribeiro ryan@theobserver.com About 11 months ago I was an 18-year-old kid about to take a huge step into the next chapter of my life: college.

Living away from my family

and not seeing the friends I had grown up with on a daily basis were fears that I had while my new life in Boston awaited me, but none as big as the expectations people had set on what college life would be like.

I would need to have a high tolerance for alcohol. Be willing to experiment with drugs. And of course, have a fake ID for bars (which I do not have thank you for asking). These are all standards set by adolescents

living independently for the first time and attempting to go all out wild like it’s often pictured on the big screen or on MTV. After a year in college, I can honestly say that myth could not be farther from the truth. I won’t lie, there’s parties almost every weekend. Drinking is a part of the culture for sure, but it does not have to be for people who are hesitant or just plainly do not want to do it.

The beautiful thing about this “independent” life I spoke of before is that all the decisions lie in your hands.

There is no one else to blame or lean on when a tough choice stares you in the face — mom and dad live hours away, trusting you to do the right thing.

Some nights, you let loose a little bit and indulge in the party scene. But other times, it is completely OK to abstain and just hang out. There is never just one sober person in the room. Saying “no” because that’s what feels right is the bravest thing an 18-year-old can do when they are first set free and, while that can be a frightening and daunting task, it can also ease your own mind and set a tone that you will not let the environment around you dictate the type of person you are or will become.

There are plenty of other opportunities to fill your time while you are living on

campus, anyway. You can delve into a passion you have or something that interests you and get involved in the multiple activities or extracurriculars your school offers.

I have one friend who loves nothing more than print journalism and worked his way to editor of the school newspaper while sacrificing his days and nights from Monday to Thursday making sure every story is covered and done properly.

I have my own radio show, got involved with the school’s television station and do play-by-play from time to time for the school’s sports teams.

The point here is that there is more to be had in college than a large bottle of alcohol every night. I’m not here to tell you not to drink, and I’m also not here to pressure you into the party life. But what I am saying is that it does not have to be one or the other.

College is a time for you to figure out who you are, make friends for life and find that passion that will drive your career in the future.

So for incoming college freshmen who are nervous about the journey that lies ahead, don’t waste the little time you have trying to be someone you’re not and succumbing to peer pressure.

Enjoy the next four years, it can be magical if you let it be.

Kentucky Care founder Gino Montrone dies at 77 Philanthropist was known for giving back for all his own good fortune

UGENE “GINO” Montrone was born in nearby Bloomfield.

Though he never lived in Kearny, he made a huge impact on this small West Hudson community as the founder of Kentucky Care.

No question, longtime residents and readers of this newspaper remember just how important that program was — especially when The Observer took part in collecting and sending items to those less fortunate in Appalachia.

Montrone, who most recently lived in Mendham, died peacefully Friday, July 13, 2018.

He was 77.

Montrone was President & Chief Executive Officer of Instant Air Freight Co., a company he founded in 1971.

The company provides air and ground cargo operations,

terminal handling, logistical support and air charter services. The company is one of the largest independent firms to provide services at Newark Liberty International Airport.

Several years ago, because of his generosity to others, he was given a humanitarian award. While he was honored for many accomplishments, it was Kentucky Care that stood out most. When he received the award, the organization feted him with these critical words. “(Gino) has been selected for the Humanitarian Award for his consistent and generous charitable work.

His annual project called Kentucky Care,” which has run for 19 years (now longer) delivers several trailer loads of food, clothing, toys and furniture to the Appalachian Region of Kentucky each year. His unwavering persistence, kind spirit, and love for giving have

allowed this project to grow throughout the years and has helped many people and families in one of the poorest regions in the United States.”

But Montrone was known for more than just providing services. He and the company also a got involved when people were most in need throughout the world.

Perhaps the most noted instance was when Hurricane Hugo hit in September 1989.

It was then that Instant Air Freight provided “logistics of emergency lifeline relief” to the residents of St. Croix and of a Hess oil refinery.

“The provision of continued air-emergency operations were the underpinnings of survival for the island inhabitants and Hess Oil personnel,” Montrone’s bio said.

Aside from his work as CEO at Instant Air Freight, he was also a member of the United States Marine Corps., from 1961 to 1965. From 1969

to 1973, he was a member of the Cleveland Browns organization.

He was also a power-boat racer and was inducted into the National Power Boat Racing Hall of Fame in 2009. He won a world championship in Key West, Florida, in 1987.

Kentucky Care, meanwhile, perhaps Montrone’s greatest

act of philanthropy, brought food, clothing, furniture, toys and more to the poor of Knott County, Kentucky, where the average person’s salary is a little more than $11,000 a year. More than 25% of all families living there survive, somehow, below federal poverty guidelines.

n the June 13 edition of The Observer, I wrote a feature story about the misadventures of a young man who, in 1910, flew a small dirigible from Belleville to New York City, first trying to land in Manhattan, then crashing in Brooklyn. He survived, apparently unscathed; the balloon did not.

The daredevil, Frederick F. Owens, was an employee of Hillside Pleasure Park in Belleville, a vast amusement complex that drew tens of thousands of visitors to the town in the late 1800s/early 1900s.

Dirigible races above Washington Avenue were reportedly among the attractions.

Owens’ apparently unscheduled flight made headlines in the New York papers, including The Times, which reported that the pilot had hoped to “drop in on Mayor Gaynor” at Manhattan’s City Hall Park.

Mayor who? No first name was given, and I had never heard of a Mayor Gaynor.

Being a history buff, I looked him up — and found an incredible story.

When the Google results popped up, there was this 2013 Smithsonian magazine headline: “An Assassin’s Bullet Took Three Years to Kill NYC Mayor William Jay Gaynor.”

What?

Gaynor was 60 when he was inaugurated mayor on Jan. 1, 1910. He was a Democrat who had been nominated by the city’s infamous power brokers at Tammany Hall, but, as noted on Wikipedia: “Gaynor’s marriage with Tammany was shortlived; soon after taking office, he filled high-level government posts with experts, and city employees were chosen from civil service lists in the order they appeared, effectively curbing patronage and nepotism.”

Tammany fed on patronage and nepotism, but it was not the political machine that literally targeted the mayor; it was reportedly a disgruntled dockworker who had lost his job.

Gaynor was shot in the throat by the gunman on Aug. 9, 1910, just seven months after taking office, but he continued to serve as mayor until his death in 1913.

The Smithsonian article, written

Gaynor survived the assassination attempt, “the bullet stayed in his throat, slowly robbing him of the ability to speak. He remained a politician, though, and was a strong enough opponent of corruption that Tammany Hall Democrats refused to support him for reelection in 1913.”

[Note: Can you imagine a politician who couldn’t speak? Personally, I like the idea.]

Eveleth continues: “Gaynor ran anyway, announcing an independent run for mayor on the steps of City Hall. His secretary had to make his speech for him, but, according to the Bowery Boys [theboweryboysblogspot.com], as the secretary explained Gaynor’s plan to eradicate graft, the mayor leaped up and cried, ‘Yes, that is what we are going to do — shovel all those miserable grafters into the common dump!’”

Treating himself to a vacation before entering what would be a fierce election fray, Gaynor set sail for Europe aboard the RMS Baltic. Six days later, on Sept. 10, 1913, he was found dead in a deck chair. Notes Wikipedia: “After his death, doctors concluded that he died of a heart attack and that his old wound was at most a minor contributing factor.”

Weird sidelight: Gaynor’s body

was returned to New York aboard the eventually doomed Lusitania.

Another oddity: Gaynor, ready for a European cruise, had been shot aboard an ocean liner. the SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, when it was docked in Hoboken prior to sailing.

William Warnecke, a photographer for The New York World, was snapping pictures of the mayor and just happened to catch the very moment the would-be assassin struck.

In the callous news biz, we call that luck.

Belleville’s new mayor walks Washington Ave.

length of Washington Avenue Saturday, July 7, to start zeroing in on areas in need of immediate improvement, as well as to discuss the future development of the main thoroughfare with local business operators and owners.

A crucial component the day, according to the mayor, was starting a dialogue with local business owners and members of the community.

The township is moving forward with plans to restrict news boxes, which officials claim are cluttering the avenue, and are in discussions with the Belleville Department of Public Works to create an action plan to consistently keep the avenue clean while encouraging local shop operators to participate in beautification.

In addition, the mayor is interested in utilizing Clean Communities grant money to purchase a sidewalk sweeper.

Municipal officials will also be meeting with Newe Jersey Department of Transportation engineers to discuss various improvements and streetscape upgrades.

“I believe the success of Washington Avenue is vital to the economic development of our township, and we will make it a priority,” Melham said. “I also want to thank the various township officials who supported this effort by participating in the Saturdaymorning walk, including our Police Chief Mark Minichini, who not only attended, but arranged for a Community Policing Officer on bike patrol to also participate.”

‘American Pickers’ coming to New Jersey You know that old saying “one person’s trash could be another’s treasure?” Well, that saying is in full force right now — as the hit TV show “American Pickers” plans on filming in New Jersey next month. Thing is, they need some help.

And that’s where you come in.

But first, a little bit about the show, especially for those who may not have seen the History Channel program.

“American Pickers” is a documentary series that explores the world of antique “picking.” The hit show follows Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz, two of the most skilled pickers in the business, as they hunt for America’s most valuable antiques. They are always excited to find sizeable, unique collections and learn the interesting stories behind them.

KPD: From locker to lock-up

On May 19, an adult couple came to Kearny Police Headquarters to report that, while they were exercising at LA Fitness, the lock had been cut off their shared locker and a wallet, credit card and $60 in cash had been stolen.

Police said the couple were later advised by their bank that “numerous fraudulent transactions, totaling $1,222.25,” had been made with their card at stores in Jersey City and Secaucus.

picked up the case and, on July 6, was able to identify and charge Jonah Williams, 47, of Jersey City, with burglary and theft, police reported.

Williams was arrested at his home the same day, but only after a short standoff during which he threatened to sic his two Dobermans on the arrest team, authorities said.

He was lodged in the Hudson County Jail with additional charges pending.

The last two KPD blotters included reports of people shoplifting bags and bags of frozen shrimp.

Now comes a report that a Kearny man allegedly replaced the price tag on a Shop-Rite snow crab with that of a cheaper item to cheat the store out of $25.97.

Suspect Luis Ribeiro, 55, was nabbed at the market at 5:47 p.m. by Officers Sean Wilson and Pat Becker and

charged on a summons with shoplifting. Police said he also had a $500 Harrison arrest warrant for a traffic offense.

He was released after posting bail.

••• At 8:27 p.m., Officers Christian Medina and Sergio Nobre responded to a report of two males burglarizing cars in the area of Belgrove Drive and Lindsay Lane and then spotted the suspects a block away on Bergen Avenue.

When the officers alighted from their vehicle, police said, Ali Howard, 18, of East Orange, ran but was caught

by Medina and Officers Jason Rodrigues and Nicholas Funk after a short foot chase. The other, a 14-year-old from East Orange, did not run.

Police said that, after interviews with witnesses, both were taken into custody, and recovered from one of their backpacks were a wallet and driver’s license belonging to a local resident.

Howard was charged with burglary, receiving stolen property, employing a juvenile in a crime, conspiracy, resisting arrest by flight and obstructing, and was released on a summons. The juvenile was turned over to a guardian with charges pending for burglary, theft and conspiracy.

July 9 Officers Rodrigues and Funk, patrolling Bergen Avenue at 2:42 a.m., ran a computer check on a black Jeep Cherokee with a nonfunctioning license plate light, found its registration was expired, pulled it over at Bergen Avenue and Ivy Street and detected a certain scent, police said.

Driver Ahmed Monsour, 18, of Jersey City, reportedly was found to have a suspended license and a $200 (full) arrest warrant from Secaucus for DWS. He was charged in Kearny with the same offense and with failure to surrender the license, operating an unregistered vehicle and failure to maintain lamps.

Police said passenger Crystal Contreras, 19, of Kearny, was found to have a canister of marijuana in her pants and was charged with possession of pot/paraphernalia.

Monsour posted bail, and both parties were released with summonses.

Kearny Kids Kamp: A week of baseball knowledge Brendan Mara may only be five years old, but he certainly knows what he likes.

When it comes to baseball, young Brendan loves his Yankees and his favorite player is All-Star outfielder Aaron Judge.

But even at a young age, Brendan knows that he has to become a better baseball player if he ever hopes to be as good as Judge someday.

So that’s why Brendan was among 50 or so other youngsters who attended the Kearny Kids Kamp last week at the Franklin School field.

“I feel like I’m a better player now,” Mara said proudly. “I learned out to catch this week and that’s important. This makes me want to play more. It was a lot of fun.”

That was the predominant feeling at the Kearny Kids Kamp. The kids had fun.

“I love hitting and I think I’m a good hitter,” said 6-year-old Michael Faulk of Belleville. “I

had a lot of fun here and want to learn more about baseball.”

Faulk is also a Yankee fan who says all rise to Aaron Judge.

Maverick Michalski is 7 years old and he’s a first baseman/outfielder who also loves the Yankees and Judge. It’s becoming an epidemic.

“I liked pitching,” Michalski said. “I became a better pitcher.”

The Kamp also had a handful of girls who attended.

Alyssa Badia is seven and headed into the second grade in the fall.

“I felt like I had to get better if I wanted to play baseball,” said Badia, who also plays softball. “I think I got better.”

Emma Carson is 11 and a standout baseball player already, earning a spot on the Cali Carting team that just recently captured the crown in the Kearny Little League World Series. Carson is

Torres was just one of the many aspiring stars at the camp, a collective group that had to make the camp director very happy, knowing that the future is bright in North Arlington.

If they enjoy doing something, no matter what it is, then they can’t be afraid to work hard. If you have a passion for something, then just go for it.”

By the look of things last week, these youngsters definitely have a passion for basketball, which is not a bad first step.

“A lot of these kids have a love for the game,” D’Andrea said.

And it’s that love and passion that drives D’Andrea daily.

“It’s my profession,” said D’Andrea, who enjoyed his 52nd birthday during camp last Thursday. “It’s what I do. I teach physical education and I coach. But weeks like this, it’s what keeps me young. It brings me back to my younger days.”

D’Andrea grew up in Jersey City and played grammar school CYO basketball for St. Aedan’s parish.

“When I was growing up, I was constantly playing basketball in the school yard,” D’Andrea said. “So get them started, we gave them all a basketball and told them that in order to get better, they had to do a lot of work on their own. Dribbling, shooting, those are things that can be done on your own. You can get better in the summertime, doing a lot of work alone.”

D’Andrea said that he had an eager group of kids to work with last week.

“They had a lot of wide-eyed optimism,” D’Andrea said.

“That’s why I do this. If one kid can come away with something that they can take home, just one thing, then we’ve done our jobs.”

D’Andrea credited North Arlington athletic director Dave Hutchison for assisting with getting use of the gym for the past week. He also thanked Jim Burrell and his wife, Marie and North Arlington Recreation coordinator Bobby Crudele for their assistance in getting the word out about the camp.

Crudele’s nine-year-old son Shane was one of the campers. Like Torres, the younger Crudele is a fan of the Boston Celtics and Jersey boy Irving.

Nutley American wins District 8 Little League tourney for second straight year

8 and Section 2 tournaments, even though the locals were eliminated from the Section 2 tourney Sunday with a loss to Teaneck Southern, after dropping a first round game to Elmora Youth of Elizabeth.

“It has been so much fun,” Breihof said. “I’ve been coaching most of these kids since they were little. When I talk to them, it’s more about effort than it is about wins and losses. And they give their best every single day.”

Breihof inherited a team that won the District 8 12-year-old All-Star tourney a year ago and came within one inning of advancing to the New Jersey State Little League championships.

Most of that championship team returned this year, so Breihof just had to make sure everything was in place for another District 8 tourney run.

“I think winning last year actually made it more difficult to coach them this year,” said Breihof, who was not the manager of the squad last season. “Everyone was expecting us to win again and all the other teams in the district were looking to knock us off.”

So Breihof made sure the Nutley Americans were poised and ready to defend their title.

“We worked so hard on the fundamentals,” Breihof said.

“We worked on situational plays, like what to do when runners are on first and sec-

ond and no outs or second and third and one out. These kids didn’t commit the common errors made in Little League, like throwing the ball around or throwing the ball away.”

Plus, there was a camaraderie that the Nutley Americans enjoyed, making the team more enjoyable to coach.

“They were always able to pick each other up,” Breihof said. “They’re just a good group of kids.”

Breihof relayed a message to his team on a regular basis.

“I told them that they might only be 12 years old, but they’re making friends for life,” Breihof said. “I’m 46 years old and still some of my closest friends are ones that I played Little League baseball with. So I reminded this team about the opportunity to make memories that will last for the rest of their lives. They’re never going to forget their Little League days.”

The Nutley Americans will remember this season for another reason other than sentimentality. That’s because Breihof’s bunch did successfully defend their District 8 Little League championship, defeating Bloomfield in the title game last week, 3-2, to advance to the Section 2 tourney in Ridgefield with a berth in the state championships on the line.

“The kids have really stepped up,” Breihof said.

Breihof also had a well prepared squad, because they practiced four times a week to get ready for the District 8 tourney, which had a different format this year, going to pool play instead of the straight double elimination variety.

“They were 4-0 in pool play, then had to beat the same Bloomfield team twice, which isn’t easy,” Breihof said.

But it certainly helped that the Nutley Americans had Kevin Jiratatprasat on their team. The tall, powerful left-hander merely pitched a perfect game in pool play against rival Livingston to send the Nutley Americans to the championship round against Bloomfield.

Jiratatprasat’s family hails from Thailand and are scheduled to make another trip to Asia later this summer. Of course, Thailand has been in the international headlines recently after the Thai soccer team were trapped in the cave for almost three weeks and had to endure a dramatic rescue to get out.

“I can’t believe how good Kevin has gotten,” Breihof said. “And he keeps getting

better and better. He’s always been a dominant pitcher because of his size, but he has become a better pitcher with his composure and demeanor on the mound. He’s more of a pitcher now than a thrower. He is able to make adjustments in the middle of games. He’s just a good kid with a bright future.”

And being a dominant lefty just makes Nutley High School head coach Bob Harbison drool with excitement, knowing that there’s a distinct possibility Jiratatprasat will be a member of the Maroon Raiders’ pitching staff in a couple of years.

The team’s No. 2 pitcher is right-hander Will Jennings, who is equally as talented.

“Will throws the ball hard and he’s good at hitting the corners,” Breihof said. “He is comfortable on the mound and mixes up his pitches well. When he gets the ball, I know he’s going to give me a good effort.”

Jennings threw a complete game victory over Belleville in the District 8 pool play.

The team’s third pitcher is the manager’s son, righthander Jonathan Breihof.

“Jon is the kind of kid who I know will throw strikes,” said Breihof of his son. “He’s not a dominant pitcher like

the other two, but I can count on him when needed. He has figured out how to pitch and throw strikes.”

The catcher is Joey Haines, who remarkably did not catch for his team during the regular season.

“Joey is a natural third baseman,” Breihof said. “But because I needed someone I could trust behind the plate, Joey stepped up. He’s so reliable as our catcher. He’s very good at the mental side of the game.”

First base duties are shared by Jiratatprasat or Jennings, depending upon who is pitching.

Drew Slomkowski is the team’s second baseman and the lone 11-year-old member of the team.

“He does such a solid job at second base and never wants to come out,” the elder Breihof said. “He’s rock solid at second.”

The shortstop is Jayden Martinez.

“Jayden has been great,” Breihof said. “He’s made every single play and has good baseball instincts. He also gives me good at-bats every game. He’s going to get to every ball hit to him and you can’t teach that.”

Josh Dick and Jake LoMonaco equally share the third base duties.

“They’re both solid and make good plays at third,” Breihof said.

Anthony Pinal is the primary left fielder.

“He’s a super athlete,” Breihof said. “He’s new to baseball and he’s new to Nutley. But he’s a big strong kid.”

Pinal is also the team’s second string catcher.

Chris Sarno is another left fielder. Sarno made a phenomenal catch in left field to help preserve Jiratatprasat’s perfecto against Livingston.

“With one out in the sixth (and final) inning, he made a great catch to save the per-

fect game,” Breihof said.

The centerfielder is Ryan Roque, who roams the entire outfield.

“I said that 70 percent of the world is covered in water,” Breihof said. “The other 30 percent is covered by Ryan Roque. He does a tremendous job.”

The right fielder is Jonathan Breihof, who is usually a centerfielder, but slides over in deference to Roque.

“Between Ryan and Jonathan, they get to almost every ball,” Breihof said.

The team features a host of other reserves like third baseman/outfielder Anthony Nina and backup catcher Jayden Velez.

Needless to say, coaching his son with the Nutley American Little League All-Stars has been more than just a treat for Breihof.

“It’s been the most fun in the world,” Breihof said.

“Words can’t describe how much fun.”

School boards hire 2 new leaders

By Ron Leir Special to The Observer One school district recently welcomed the return of a former chief administrator while a neighboring district is awaiting the arrival of a brand new fiscal official.

Both are leaving jobs where there is unrest among school board members.

Richard Corbett gave up a chance for tenure by leaving his old job as superintendent of the Roselle Public Schools with two years remaining on his contract there, as the school board awaits the results of a state Department of Education review of its fiscal picture.

Corbett headed East Newark’s lone school from 2007 to 2012 before moving on to run Hardyston Schools in

Sussex County until December 2016 when the Roselle district hired him as interim superintendent, then as permanent superintendent, in June 2017.

In East Newark, he’ll collect $145,000 his first year, then $1,000 more each year thereafter under his 5-year contract.

a very fine community which is supported by the Board of Education and the mayor and Borough Council,” which, he added, extended through the entire government structure.

As an example of that generosity of spirit, Corbett cited a recent conversation he had with Mayor Joseph Smith when he happened to mention some brush overgrowth intruding onto the rear of the school building.

In just a few hours, Corbett said, he heard a loud noise outside the school and, looking out the window, he saw the borough police chief — who doubles as the DPW boss — up on a ladder cutting down a large overhanging tree branch.

His main goal, Corbett said, is to deliver quality education to the children.

“I’m committed to doing whatever needs to be done,” he said Corbett acknowledged he’s stepping into a problematic situation, given the teachers’ protracted contract negotiations, having gone three years without a new agreement, but he asserted “the teachers are a major part of this community and they enjoy being part of it.”

As a learning experience for himself — and to help ensure that students and teachers

are on the same path to being all they can be — Corbett plans to “spend a significant part of my time in the classroom” as an observer.

“I’m going to be there so much,” he quipped.

“The teachers are going to think I’m one of their students.”

Lest teachers fear he’s there to spy on them, Corbett insists that’s not the case. “I want to provide instructive, charitable criticism to raise the bar for both teachers and students.”

Constructive, focused attention on an issue can bring change, he asserted. It happened, he said, in Roselle where he led a “team effort” to address L.B. Moore Middle School and Clark High School labeled “low-performing” by state standards.

“In a year and a half, through interventions, we were able to remove those schools from that rating — all due to team effort,” he said.

Ideally, Corbett said, he’ll work with borough teachers to find common ground to facilitate improvements in student performance.

Changes in Kearny Meanwhile, on Aug. 1 the Kearny Board of Education will greet Edward Izbicki Sr., the new school business administrator, who was hired June 18 to replace interim B.A. Ronald Smith for a one-year

term, July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019, at $175,000 plus a benefit package valued at $41,600. But his pay will be pro-rated based on the Aug. 1 start date.

Izbicki has served as assistant superintendent for finance/ board secretary for the Garfield school district since December 2012.

His departure from Garfield comes on the heels of his employers talking about the possibility of not re-hiring Superintendent Nicholas Perrapato amid financial concerns. Continued from Page 4 For five-plus years, The Observer was deeply involved in the project, and was a collection point before tractortrailers — some years, three 18-wheelers were needed — would be driven to Kentucky.

Collections were taken, usually two days a week, behind the newspaper’s old Kearny Avenue office and at times, so many came to drop off donations that traffic would form on Kearny Avenue, and cars would have to wait in line before folks were able to unload their donations.

Years ago, Montrone told The Observer’s Co-Owner Lisa Feorenzo about the project, prompting her to get involved.

Feorenzo once told a story of how Montrone started the project — 20+ years ago — as a way to give back in light of his own successes.

Montrone did research and learned that Knott County, Kentucky, was among the poorest in the country. So he got the name of someone at a local school and gave him a call to kick off the process.

“And they thought it was

a prank call,” Feorenzo said in an Observer story several years back. “Some people there have never even been to a store. They don’t know what sizes they wear.”

When Feorenzo learned of Montrone’s death last week, she knew she’d lost someone special.

“He was such a special human being,” Feorenzo said of her friend of 30+ years. “No matter who was around him, he made you happy. He made you smile. He made you laugh.

And he was so generous. Those folks in Kentucky had so little, yet whenever he’d arrive, he would bring such joy to the people who lived there.

“That’s the kind of man he was.”

And Bob Hallenbeck, of North Arlington, echoed Feorenzo’s sentiments.

“He was rough but a softy too,” Hallenbeck, a volunteer for Kentucky Care, recalled.

“He was generous, but as an exMarine, if you didn’t load the truck right, he would tell you. I was lucky to know him — and as ex-Navy, I knew just how to deal with him.”

Robert P. Pezzolla, the general manager of The Observer, knew Gino for more

than 40 years. It was Pezzolla’s friendship with Montrone that led to his meeting Feorenzo.

When he was asked to describe his longtime friend, one thing stood out above all else for Pezzolla.

“He was loved by everybody who knew him,” Pezzolla said. “He was always there for people. He helped everyone that needed help. That was just how he was — a true sweetheart. He had a heart of gold.”

Gino is survived by his wife of 43 years, Vinnie; his daughter, Gina; his sisters Stella Moschella, Janet Garcia and Sandee Augusto; and his brother Vincent Stivali.

Montrone’s funeral is Tuesday, July 17, starting at the Leonardis Memorial Home, 210 Ridgedale Ave., Florham Park, at 9:15 a.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mendham, at 11 a.m.

He will be entombed in Gate of Heaven Mausoleum, East Hanover.

obituaries@theobserver.com Edward M. Doran Jr. Retired Harrison Fire Chief Edward M. Doran Jr. died peacefully on Monday, July 9, 2018, at NJ Fireman’s home, Boonton.

He was 92.

Funeral services were under the direction of Mulligan Funeral Home, Harrison. A funeral Mass was celebrated at Holy Cross Church, Harrison. His interment took place in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Son of Edward M. and Loretta C. Doran, the chief was born in Kearny and lived most of his life in Harrison, spending summers in Ortley Beach. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Angela (nee Martosewicz).

After graduating from Harrison High School in 1943, Doran joined the U.S. Army Air Corp., completing various training programs, including the Army Special Training Program (ASTP).

World War II was beginning to wind down and each time he completed a course, the Army determined they did not need to deploy individuals with that skill and sent him off to learn another. As his discharge date approached, his commanding officer remarked that Doran had performed very well in every area and asked if he would be interested in a referral to attend West Point.

Doran answered, “With all due respect, sir, every time you sent me to a different school, it would be closed down after I left. I don’t want to be responsible for the closing of West Point!”

He got the discharge!

Shortly thereafter he joined

Chief Doran’s service to the community went beyond his 41 years on the HFD. A devoted family man, he was a member of every parent organization of every school his children attended — Holy Cross School, Lincoln School, Washington School, Harrison High School, East Orange Catholic High School and Mount St. Dominic Academy all benefitted from Doran’s involvement.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion in Harrison.

And he was one of the original members of the Board of Directors of the Harrison Police and Firemen’s Federal Credit Union.

In addition, Mr. & Mrs. Doran were leaders in a group of parents who began the Parents of Educationally Handicapped Children in

Harrison to assist parents of children with special needs.

The groups began to discuss what would happen to their children when they aged out of the public education system.

From that discussion, and many more, West Hudson Council for the Handicapped, now known as the Pathways to Independence in Kearny was born, and continues to thrive today. Ed was a handson member of their business for several decades, from calling bingo games to collecting used toner cartridges from area business for their recycling value to location searches and renovations of their buildings, Ed was there.

Because of his many contributions to the community, Chief Doran was among the first group of “Every Day Heroes” selected and honored

by The Jersey Journal newspaper in 1990.
