IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT ROOM SELECTION! Room selection is the process in which all Kean University students (residents and commuters) get to choose their own room for the upcoming year. This newsletter will provide you with all the information needed in order to secure a room for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Students should check their email often for tips and tricks that will help students during the room selection process.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT The Basics of Room Selection What is Room Selection?

Room Selection is the process that Kean students can use to select a room for the next academic year. There are three parts to the process. Submit the contract and non-refundable application fee, submit preferences, and select a room.

Who can participate?

All students that are going to be full time during the fall 2018 semester are eligible to participate in room selection. Current residents will have a higher priority than commuters and newly admitted transfer students (see priority on page 8). Students who live on campus must be full time and have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA. A review of student status and GPA will be completed at the end of May to make sure all participants are still eligible to keep the room they reserved.

When is the deadline to participate in Room Selection?

All students who would like to participate in Room Selection must submit their housing contract, application fee, and their preferences by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 9th. This is the Friday before spring break. All students that meet this deadline will be eligible to participate in Room Selection. The actual room selection will begin the week after spring break.

Where will Room Selection be this year?

All parts of Room Selection will be done ONLINE this year. This includes the housing application, the payment and the actual room selection. Selecting a room will be similar to registering for class. When it is a group’s designated room selection time, instead of coming to a physical location, students will log in and select the room they want based on the open spaces available.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

Three Step Process To Apply for Housing: Step 1: Apply for housing and pay the $125 housing application fee.

The housing application is available on the Residential Portal. You can log into KeanWise or go directly to the portal HERE. Students must accept the 2018-2019 Terms and Agreement and then pay their $125 housing application fee. The fee must be paid upfront this year. Students will not be able to defer the payment.

Step 2: Submit your housing preferences and create a roommate group.

The process for selecting roommates is new this year. The first person to apply for housing will "Create Group" and invite the students they want to live with. Students will need to know each other's full name and Kean University email in order to invite each other into groups. All students invited into a group must accept the invitation. A student will not be part of a group until they accept. If a student wants to leave a group, they click "Leave Group".

Students that do not have anyone to live with next year can "opt in" to our Find My Roommate database. Lastly, students should complete their roommate and room preferences. This information in used in the event that a room is not filled, we try to match people based on their preferences.

Students must submit their roommate group and preferences by 4pm on March 9, 2018. Any student that does not complete this step by the deadline, will not be able to participate in the Room Selection Process. They will be assigned a room after everyone else selects a room.

Step 3: Selecting a Room.

Students will select their room online this year. It will be similar to the process students use to select their class schedules. Each student will be given a priority time to select. Priority it based off of group size, current residential status, and class standing.

Resident Spotlight Whiteman Hall’s Star Resident for March is Shavina Harvey. Originally from Plainfield, New Jersey, Shavina is a freshman dual majoring in Psychology and Vocal Music. Shavina took a college Psychology coarse in high school and was really interested in pursuing a career in mental health. Shavina has been singing in church all her life and also attended a performing arts high school. In five to ten years, Shavina hopes to have her own mental health clinic incorporating music in her services in her hometown of Plainfield. Shavina enjoys the freedom living on campus provides and likes that she has easy access to everything on campus.

Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.” Shavina believes tomorrow is a new day and she is open to what life has to offer.

Resident Spotlight Rogers Hall Star Resident for March is Pavlo Busko. Originally from Ukraine and currently living in Parsippany, New Jersey, Pavlo is a Freshman studying Biology specifically in nutrition and diet. During Pavlo’s freshman year of high school, he went through a significant life change and became interested in the way the body works and how diet has a large impact on how we feel. In five to ten years, Pavlo sees himself as a registered Dietician helping people one-on-one with lifestyle issues, motivational issues, and diet. He wants to help people prevent illnesses and he believes taking care of the body is the best way to do so.

Pavlo likes that classes are close to the residence hall and finds it convenient to have everything in close relation to each other.

Pavlo lives by the quote, “spend more time being a good person.” He believes more people should spent time creating and he thinks people could really benefit from that.

Resident Spotlight Bartlett Hall’s Star Resident for March is Dyani Crute. Originally from East Orange, New Jersey, Dyani is a freshman studying Interior Design. Dyani found herself interested in interior design from watching HGTV Network and becoming enthralled in design. In five to ten years, Dyani sees herself in New York City or Las Vegas doing commercial design for hotels, casinos, and salons. Dyani likes the closeness of the residence halls to her classes and is a fan of the freshman meal plan. Dyani loves community service and helping individuals in need and bonding with people along the way. Dyani is starting to get involved in the Outdoor Adventure and Recreation Club on campus and is looking forward to the experiences she will endure in this club.

“See your strive to success as a celebrity because success doesn’t come as easy as it looks.” Dyani relates to this when she feels like giving up, she reminds herself that success takes effort and it will come with time.

Resident Spotlight Burch Hall’s Star Resident for March is Mikael Pena.

Originally from Bronx, New York and living in Cliffside Park, New Jersey, Mikael is a Senior studying Mathematics Education. Mikael has enjoyed math for as long as he could remember and always excelled throughout school. He loves completely formulas in his head and enjoys helping others understand and hopefully appreciate math as much as he does. In five to ten years, Mikael sees himself teaching in a high school, preferably to freshman and sophomore students. From a musical family, Mikael has taken up piano and plans to continue his musical passion in the years to come. Mikael likes living on campus as he has been able to connect with people of all backgrounds and ethnicities and live and learn together. He is the President of the fraternity, Gamma Psi Epsilon and is always open to talk with people about joining and making a difference in the Kean University community. Good luck, Mikael!

“Sometimes it is needed to fall into the deepest pits of darkness in order to rise up as brightly as the moonlight star.” Mikael’s original quote is full of meaning; life gets really hard sometimes and truly overcoming that darkness will make you a better and stronger person.

Resident Spotlight New Upperclass Residence Hall’s Star Resident for March is Ciara Williams. Originally from Budd Lake, New Jersey, Ciara is a sophomore studying Psychology and is interested in integrating education as well. Ciara is interested in how the mind works and the intricate details of how people operate and is looking forward to devoting her career to helping others. Ciara worked with elementary students and knew that she wanted to work with kids and mental health. In five to ten years, Ciara sees herself being a School Counselor or a Child Life Specialist. She likes living on campus because everything is close and provided for you in the campus community.

“Always appreciate the little things and always thrive.” This speaks to Ciara as she pursues a life of helping others live their best life.

Resident Spotlight Sozio Hall’s Star Resident for March is Katelyn Piorkowski. Originally from Ocean City, New Jersey, Katelyn is a Sophomore studying Communications and Public Relations. Katelyn hopes to use her communication skills to advocate for a nonprofit organization. She would love to spread awareness and acceptance for groups such as the LGBTQ+ community, those who suffer from mental illness and continue to advocate for those who are differently abled. Katelyn loves living on Kean University campus where there is a community for students who make it their goal to support one another while learning to aid in the progression of society. Katelyn feels that the Kean community is her home and the residents are her friends and family. Living on campus fuels her ambition to spend every day working to achieve her goals. Katelyn is enjoying her opportunity working with P.A.R.C. AC where she helps to plan and organize events for the community on campus. This experience has connected her to the students and what their needs are. She helps address those needs and does what she can to better the thriving community. Thank you Katelyn for your ongoing support on campus!

Office Of Residential Student Services Kean University distributes official information to the Kean University issued e -mail accounts. Residents are encouraged to check their e-mails daily starting from the time they are assigned. If you do not know your log-in credentials, please contact the Office of Computer and Information Services at 908-7376800.

In addition, residents are encouraged to sign up for Campus Alert. It is a notification system used during campus wide crisis. If you have not registered or need to update your information, please visit www.kean.edu/campusalert for instructions. Users of the system are strongly encouraged to use the text message notification option of the Campus Alert System.

RSS Important Reminders 

If you are locked out of your room during office hours, you may get a loaner key.



You are responsible for the keys issued to you and you should never give your keys to anyone.



Forms must be completed in advance for over- night, International, and minor guests. The forms can be obtained from your Community Center.



If you have a maintenance concern, you can fill out an online work order.



If you receive a package, an email will be sent to your Kean email address as soon as it is received in the residential mailroom.


