Double bill of dance at Constantine

AN OUTSTANDING double bill of urban contemporary dance will be showcased at The Tolmen Centre in Constantine this November.

Tentacle Tribe is an acclaimed Canadian-Swedish female trio fusing music and movement in a style known as ‘conceptual hip-hop’ or deconstructed street dance’.

In Origami Mami, the group performs a new work taking influence from the intricate art of Origami. The second performance called Nobody Likes a Pixelated Squid is a famed duet inspired by the fluid movements of land and sea creatures.

Blondie tribute heads to Blue Anchor FANS OF new wave pop music can roll back the years with a Blondie tribute band at the Blue Anchor Inn at Helston.

Crusties! Less Peaches And More Showers!

Last week, Prime Minister Boris called the Extinction Rebellion activists “crusties”.

He was obviously referring to, what the PM believed to be, their smelliness and lack of general hygiene. Now, though I do not agree with the activists’ methods, like jumping on top of trains on the Underground, I do believe there should be more respect in political debate, more politeness, less name-calling and all that. Surely we can all disagree in an adult way. Is that too much to ask?

Though looking at the crusties on TV, they do look like that they are, indeed, stinking, and a bloody good shower would not do them any harm at all! Not washing is not going to save the planet. All it does is make the planet less pleasant for the rest of us, while it is still here that is!

It is self evident to most of us, that sacrifices will have to be made to save the planet. Most of us have started by recycling

our plastic bags. More will be required though. So what else can we do? Eating less meat will make a big difference, but we do not all have to become militant, carrot-munching vegans. All we have to do is simply eat less meat. So why don’t we all try having one meat-free day each week? If everyone in the UK could achieve this then it would be a marvellous start. I’ll get the ball rolling this week!

What else can we do to save the planet? Well, small things like eating bananas rather than peaches. Why would this make a difference? Bananas have a small carbon footprint as they come to the UK by boat. Peaches have to be flown in! That suits me, conveniently, as I’d much rather eat a banana than a stupid, Earth-destroying peach!

Have I saved the planet yet with my Peanut Butter Sandwich for dinner and a banana for dessert? Probably not. But my point is, that if we could all be given

some guidance, advice, on how to make the small steps, then big strides as a whole will be made in the long term. Instead of telling us that we need to radically change our lives immediately by stopping flying, giving up our cars, cycling everywhere, becoming vegan, and stopping using single use plastic, give us pointers to make the small steps, the small changes. I am sure most people will roll their sleeves up and get stuck in.

Just remember, you can still save the planet and have a bath! The two are not mutually exclusive. Am I wrong?

Gweek Players to stage literary comedy play A COMEDY PLAY poking fun at literary styles will tread the boards at Gweek Village Hall when The Gweek Players present their latest production.

Shipwrecks the subject of illustrated talk VISITORS TO The Museum of Cornish Life in Helston will be treated to fascinating tales of shipwrecks next week.

Calls for public to join tree-planting project RESIDENTS, community groups, businesses and schools are being invited to join a tree-planting initiative in support of Cornwall Council’s climate emergency project, the Forest for Cornwall.

The ambitious programme aims to cover 8,000 hectares of land across Cornwall with carbon-absorbing woodlands and forests and will officially launch next month during National Tree Week.

Organisers say The Forest for Cornwall will significantly increase the number of trees across multiple locations such as woods, parks, farmland, towns, villages and gardens over a decade.

At the last quinquennial inspection areas in need of repair were identified, the cost of this is over £300,000 so it is necessary to prioritise and set realistic targets for fundraising.

• The roof over the vicar’s vestry leaks and is in urgent need of replacing.

• The rainwater goods, guttering and downpipes do not deal with the volume of water from the main roof.

For the first phase it is proposed to address these problems as continual ingress of water will spoil the interior fittings and decoration which we have worked so hard to preserve.

We have obtained a quote for the cost of

the window repairs at £8,800 An estimate of the cost for the roof and rainwater goods is £16,800 We are looking to raise £30,000 to complete this phase of the repairs.

Every parish church is responsible for funding their own repairs. It is up to the local community to raise the money. The PCC will be applying to various grant giving organisations but if those of us who want to be able to use the church in the future could contribute it will enable us to begin the work all the sooner.

The community uses St Bartholomew’s Church for concerts, as well as family events such as weddings, baptisms and funerals.

Volkswagen ID.3 scoops Carwow’s Most Wanted Award at 2019 ceremony THE VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 has earned its first trophy from the UK’s media, being presented with Carwow’s Most Wanted Award at the website’s annual ceremony in London. Even before the car arrives in the UK, the ID.3 has already won its first accolade, the carwow Most Wanted Award. This aims to recognise the car with most public excitement and anticipation ahead of a launch, and this year few have created as much buzz as the ID.3. The all-new electric Volkswagen will be the first built on the new Volkswagen Group MEB platform, a dedicated all-electric platform that will underpin a range of new EVs from the brand over the next few years.

The ID.3 will be available with three range options, with up to 342 miles (WLTP) possible, while three maximum charging capacities are also offered: 50 kW, 100 kW and 125 kW at a DC power source. Key characteristic of the ID.3 is that it will be completely carbon-neutral at the point of delivery, with no excess carbon dioxide released during the manufacture and logistical processes wherever possible – match-

ing Volkswagen’s commitment to be completely carbon neutral by 2050.

Using Volkswagen’s green energy provider, Elli, drivers can continue their ID.3’s carbon neutrality into its working life.

The production car made its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, by which time over 30,000 pre-orders had been taken.

Geraldine Ingham, Head of Marketing at Volkswagen UK added: “The ID.3 is a hugely significant car for Volkswagen, and marks the third major chapter in our history after the Beetle and the Golf. We are delighted with the response to the car so far, and we’ve already filled all of our pre-booking slots for the ID.3 1ST Edition in the UK, with a waiting list in place, such is the level of demand. We are working to bring electric cars to the masses and with great range, an affordable price and fun handling promised we aren’t entirely surprised at the reception to the car so far.

“The ID.3 will start production next month and we expect the first cars to arrive with our pre-bookers in the summer next year.”

Blues continue unbeaten league streak And look forward to record Club winning run St Blazey 1-3 Helston Athletic HELSTON MAINTAINED their winning streak in the league on Saturday, defeating St Blazey 3-1 at Blaise Park.

The hosts set their stall out early, defending very deep and inviting the visitors on, happy to attack on the break with long balls over the top of The Blues defence.

Blazey’s defence was to prove resolute for the majority of the first half, although Helston had two goals disallowed for offside infringements, and had a very strong penalty shout denied, that forced even the Blazey management into a look of bafflement at the decision.
