‘Tis the season for classical music

Opera Edwardsville presents its 2nd annual holiday concert EDWARDSVILLE — For the second annual “Christmas at The Wildey: A Wagnerian Christmas,” Opera Edwardsville welcomes new and international performers to the historic theater’s stage.

“From Christmas trees to Krampus and gingerbread witches to Christmas presents, this concert draws upon the music of Wagner, Humperdinck, Rossini and the Germanic Christmas tradition for a fun and festive, if not epic, musical program,” said Opera Edwardsville founder and Artistic Director Chase Henry Hopkins.

“Fröhliche Weihnachten!”

A limited number of last minute tickets have been made available through The Wildey’s box office for “Christmas at The Wildey,” 7:30 p.m. Friday at The Wildey Theatre, 252 N. Main St., Edwardsville.

While not many would associate Richard Wagner with the holidays, this surprising program transports listeners to Lucerne, Switzerland, on a Christmas Day in 1870.

Wagner’s wife, Cosima, awoke that Christmas morning to the sounds of an orchestra playing “The Siegfried Idyll” on the front

steps of their villa.

Cosima Wagner wrote: “As I awoke, my ear caught a sound, which swelled fuller and fuller; no longer could I imagine myself to be dreaming: music was sounding, and such music! When it died away, Richard came into my room with the children and offered me the score of the symphonic birthday poem. I was in tears, but so were all the rest of the household. Richard had arranged his orchestra on the staircase, and thus was our Idyll consecrated forever.”

This musical program features Cosima Wagner’s Christmas gift and continues to explore the work of Richard Wagner through the lens of his life and history, as well as the Germanic Christmas tradition, Hopkins explained. The festive classical program highlights the music of Wagner (1813-1883), Engelbert Humperdinck (1854-1921), also a German composer who wrote the opera “Hansel und Gretel,” and Gioachino Antonio Rossini (1792-1868), an Italian composer who gained fame for his 39 operas.

Opera Edwardsville’s 2019 season made for a momentous year for the nonprofit organization. The season kicked off in September with a monumental concert, welcoming American treasure Christine Brewer, of Lebanon, Illinois, and renowned pianist, Craig Terry. OE provided five free masterclasses to three universities: Webster, University of Missouri-St. Louis and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, led by Northwestern University voice teacher, Karen Brunssen.

Throughout the fall, OE and SIUE presented “Pinocchio,” an opera for children that reached more than 1,000 elementary students. Now, the season will culminate with OE’s highly anticipated “Christmas at The Wildey.”

“Sharing the music I love with my hometown is an absolute joy,” Hopkins said. “I am grateful for the support, enthusiasm and momentum behind Opera Edwardsville and consider it a great privilege to be contributing to the city’s arts community. Thank you!”

Hopkins met one of the upcoming holiday concert performers, Brittany Yarbrough, a soprano and an Edwardsville native, last fall

while conducting a masterclass at Edwardsville High School.

“I was so impressed with Brittney’s voice

and am proud to feature her as a special guest on the program,” he said.

Yarbrough currently is pursuing her bachelor’s degree at SIUE and trained with its music department professor and Director of Musical Theater Marc Schapman as part of the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis’ Artistin-Training program, in which she won first place last year in the program’s competition and top scholarship. She also has received multiple first-place awards in competitions with the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

“Opera Edwardsville is delighted to welcome Brittney as a special guest feature in this year’s holiday performance,” Hopkins said.

“Christmas at The Wildey” also will feature guest soloists Joseph Welch, piano, and Caroline Robinson, harp, along with The Persied String Quartet and The Clarion Brass Quintet.

“Lastly, I’m thrilled to welcome Penelope Cousland, not only to Opera Edwardsville — but to the United States,” Hopkins said. “This is Penelope’s U.S. debut.

“She joins us from the United Kingdom — a long way from Edwardsville,” he noted, “but an important piece of sharing the joy of opera with this community, as opera has a way of transcending boundaries and borders to unite us through the beauty of classical music. And, I can assure you, Penelope will not disappoint with her powerful mezzo-soprano voice.”

Cousland, of Glasgow, Scotland, will join Kelsheimer and Hopkins, tenor, in presenting “A Wagnerian Christmas.”

Cousland trained at the National Opera Studio in London, where she performed with the Welsh National Opera, Opera North, Scottish Opera and in masterclass at the Royal Opera House.

She has been praised for her “astonishing and wonderfully intense” performances by Planet Hugill and for her “richly toned voice”

by The Herald, a Scottish newspaper founded in 1783.

“I can’t think of a better group of guest soloists to feature in Opera Edwardsville’s second ‘Christmas at the Wildey,’” Hopkins said.

Welch, also a vocal coach and Blackburn College’s visiting professor of music, plays for Opera Theatre of Saint Louis’ Artist-in-Training

program, the Holiday Festival Chorus with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and the Young Men’s Choir, an ensemble of The St. Louis Children’s Choirs. He is the assistant music director at Variety Theatre St. Louis and the director of music at First Congregational Church in Bunker Hill. Welch is on the board of the Southern Illinois Young Artists Organization and he founded St. Louis Art Song, a nonprofit organization.

Clarion Brass, founded in 1994 and led by trumpeter Mary Weber, is St. Louis’ premier brass ensemble. The six-piece ensemble features some of the finest brass players in the region and has recorded several CDs. The Perseid String Quartet, formed in 2013, is dedicated to performing chamber music to the highest possible artistic standards. Quartet members hold advanced degrees from the nation’s top music conservatories and are active performers and educators.

‘Lemonade’ by Beyoncé is named the AP’s album of the decade

NEW YORK (AP) — The top 15 albums of the decade by Associated Press Music Editor Mesfin Fekadu: 1. Beyoncé, “Lemonade”: At the beginning of this decade, Beyoncé was already the greatest singer of her generation. She won a record six Grammys in a single night, had women AND MEN “oh-oh-oh’ing” to the fun sound of “Single Ladies” and continued to be a beast of a performer. But somehow Superwoman — shoot, she’s Superman, too! — found a way to do more: Like a boss she launched her own company, Parkwood Entertainment, and really took the bull by the horns of her career. In 2011, she released the R&B adventure “4,” featuring classics like “Countdown,” “Love on Top,” “Party,” “End of Time,” “I Care” and “I M i s s Yo u . ” Three years later — in s u r p r i s e form — came “Beyoncé,”

her bold, audacious and daring album that showcased a new side of Beyoncé: Goodbye was the girl who cared about topping the charts, and born was an artist, a true storyteller, a grown woman. Somehow, she topped herself again with “Lemonade,” which still tastes as good as it did when it was released in 2016. The usually private Beyoncé bares her soul on the album, singing about a troubled relationship, black pride and motherhood in a brave way. Lyrically, she’s on point and honest over beats and sounds that range from rap to rock to country and pop.

“Who the (expletive) do you think I am,” she brashly asks on “Don’t Hurt Yourself,” which co-stars Jack White. The answer: the greatest of all time.

2. Rihanna, “Anti”: Something was in the water in 2016: Beyoncé delivered “Lemonade” and Rihanna gave us the best album of her career with “Anti.”

Rihanna had been moving like the Energizer Bunny since releasing her first album in 2005.

She also put out albums in 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 —

No need to hit the skip button on this album as Rihanna shows her sultry side on “Kiss It Better,” her twerk side on “Work” and her vocal chops on “Love on the Brain.” Her hard work, work, work, work, work, work has truly paid off.

3. Beyoncé, “Beyoncé”: See earlier entry.

4. Adele, “21”: Back in my day — well in 2010 — record labels sent albums months in advance, and in November 2010 I received Adele’s “21.” Everything else around had to be turned off. I was sucked in.

Months later, so was the world.

THE ENTIRE WORLD. Adele was impressive on her 2008 debut, especially on “Hometown Glory,” but with “21” she went deep, too deep, she was rolling in the deep!

Literally. Each song made you feel something — sad, lonely, bouncy, fired up, calm, angry, lost. And nine years later, each song sounds as classic as they did at first listen, especially “Turning Tables,” “Set Fire to the Rain” and the incomparable “Someone Like You.” 5. Kendrick Lamar, “good kid, m.A.A.d city”: All of Kendrick Lamar ’s albums released this decade have been masterpieces, including the 2011 independent release “Section.80” as well as the major-label projects “To Pimp a Butterfly” and “DAMN.,” which won him the Pulitzer Prize for music as he made history as the first non-classical or jazz artist to win the prestigious prize.

Lamar has profoundly mixed his poetry with hip-hop, jazz, soul, funk and African music to create songs that tackle blackness, street life, police brutality, survival and self-worth.

And with 2012’s “good kid, m.A.A.d city,” this great kid immediately raised the bar not in only in hip-hop, but in music period, forcing his peers

to do better and try harder.

6. HAIM, “Days Are Gone”: The sister trio HAIM reached perfection on their debut album. Hit play. And that is all.

7. SZA, “Ctrl”: SZA is masterful and introspective on her confessional debut album, which follows a young woman going through life and the turbulent experiences that come with it, from dating dusty boys to dealing with self-doubt.

8. Janelle Monáe, “The ArchAndroid”: According to contemporary pop folklore, Janelle Monae arrived on the pop landscape from another planet, and boy do we need more artists from that sphere to land here now. On the beautifully theatrical “The ArchAndroid,” she brilliantly paints the picture of an android, Cindi Mayweather, who finds out she is the chosen one and is trying t o f i g u re o u t how to handle her newfound mission. The versatile album has so many highpoints, including the Fela-flavored “Dance or Die,” the playful “Tightrope,” the groovy “Locked Inside” and the addictive “Faster.”

Smooth as Silk!

EDWARDSVILLE — In the past, when someone would mention having a “smoothie” to me, I always thought of something dark green that may or may not taste good. My husband thought of chocolate shakes.

We ventured to Smoothie King to find out just exactly what the professionals mean when they say “smoothie.”

Turns out, there are a lot more colors for smoothies than dark green, and a lot more flavors than chocolate. In fact, the colors, flavors and benefits run the gamut. We started out standing in line and reading the menu on the wall, but ended up forfeiting our spots to more seasoned smoothie drinkers, who already had a blend in mind. We had to sit down with a handheld menu to look it over and make a decision, and we were soon joined by others who Vicki evidently, had the same dilemma.

Bennington We thought that was a good thing.

There were so many choices, you could come back time and time again and not duplicate for a

long time. Unless, of course, you found a favorite that you just couldn’t deviate from. I might have found that one.

I perused the four categories: slim, fitness, wellness and break time. From the wellness category, all of which are described as purposefully blended with vitamins and ingredients to maintain a healthy body, I chose the “Pure Recharge” in mango strawberry, which included apple pineapple juice blend, mangoes, strawberries and electrolyte mix. It was kind of a “peachy” color and tasted delicious. Maybe it was in my head, but I felt like it gave me more energy, too.

The “Pure Recharge” was also available in strawberry or pineapple that contained a nutrient blend.

My husband tried the “Banana Berry Treat” from the break time section, which has a dozen or so flavors, all billed as healthier treats. His was a mix of strawberries, bananas, raspberries, papaya juice blend and dairy whey blend. He liked it, but it was just a tad too sweet for me. With all the choices, it was kind of funny that we both found flavors that suited us perfectly with the first try. We would both go back to get the same ones.

There are a lot more to try, though. The wellness menu contains vegan or veggie blends, and I just bet that some of those are green, like lemon ginger spinach, apple kiwi kale (this one might be bright green) or maybe, carrot kale dream. And that’s OK. The

Fitness menu items are protein rich to help you fuel up or recover faster. Choices include coffee high protein, which is considered a meal replacement, along with The hulk, with butter pecan ice cream, bananas, weight gain blend, turbinado (a natural brown sugar) and super grains enhancer, or the peanut power plus, with dates, bananas, peanut butter, protein blend and nonfat milk.

The slim category also has meal replacement smoothies. The 20-ounce “Lean 1” in vanilla, chocolate, strawberry or pineapple mango, or “The Shredder,” with Gladiator protein, diet down enhancer, protein blend, vanilla and other natural flavors are under 350 calories to help you stay on track.

Every item on the menu can be found on the full-disclosure nutritional table so you can mix or match to suit your own health, calorie, fat, protein and other needs or limitations.

The Smoothie King blends are “clean,” described as nutritionally supporting health and fitness goals, while helping you to achieve them. Many of them have zero grams of added sugar, have more whole fruits and veggies, no artificial colors, preservatives or flavors and no hydrogenated oils and trans fats and no high-fructose corn syrup or gluten.

The no artificial colors is a biggie for my sister-inlaw (as is the no gluten). She has major food allergies.

I never even realized how much added coloring there is in foods (sometimes seems so unnecessary), until I started witnessing her checking out labels. She ended up being allergic to many foods simply because there was added coloring (even things like white cake mixes –

why does that need coloring? I’ll have to research that).

A slim enhancer, a muscle builder, protein, fiber blend, immune support, multivitamin, probiotic, gluten-free super grains or energy boost are among the choices that can be added to customize your smoothie to provide the health benefits you are looking for.

There are even “Kids Blends,” most of which contain a “kids’ multivitamin.”

I was kind of surprised to discover that Steve Kuhnau, the founder of Smoothie King, actually started blending healthy smoothies to improve his own health in 1973! The first Smoothie King juice bar opened in New Orleans in 1989. Through the years, ingredients and nutrition have continued to get better and better, and there are now more than 1,000 locations around the world.

Healthy snacks are also available on shelves around the store, like Veggie Chips with sea salt that I bought and ate as an afternoon treat. They weren’t bad, and I think they would be especially good as a side with a sandwich. We also tried the peanut butter and jelly Grab the Gold snack bar. Truthfully, it looked like a dog biscuit, but actually tasted fairly good. Definitely a nice way to boost energy or quiet hunger pains with its 11 grams of protein.

‘Dark Waters’ gets little fanfare, but good job depicting big issue

Mark Ruffalo’s character, Rob Bilott, in “Dark Waters,” is a corporate lawyer making partner by billing large fees to his chemical company clients for their defense until his conscience comes into play.

Bilott is not a funny or relaxed guy. He’s nervous and brooding and the movie shows how he must’ve earned every gray hair on his head. If you go in expecting a male-fronted “Erin Brockovich,” you’ll be on the right track, but the drama has changed a bit in the 20 years since that movie was a hit.

Bilott hits his stride in Cincinnati, Ohio, as a young litigator when he gets a rather aggressive referral to his office one afternoon. Cattle farmer Wilbur Tennant (Bill Camp) shows up announcing he needs help and, as Bilott is the grandson of Tennant friend’s neighbor, Bilott just might be his “in.”

Tennant isn’t depicted as a fellow who would understand the distinctions in law, be they subtle or broad, and he uses bully tactics to get Bilott to eventually come see what’s happening at his West Virginia farm downriver from a new landfill. The farmer’s cows are

dying awfully in rapid succession. The scene in which he has to put one down, lest it attack him, is one I still see when I close my eyes at night. Tennant contends that the titanic corporate chemical manufacturer, DuPont, is poisoning his family and his land with runoff from its private dumping grounds. He really works the “Bilott’s grandma” angle and soon the attorney is hooked, bringing the case to his boss (Tim Robbins, flashing brilliance in a thin role) on a contingency basis that soon turns into a paranoid money pit for Bilott and his firm.

There’s a modest amount of scientific explanation in “Dark Waters” for it to make sense.

Essentially, Dupont began to dispose of waste from the fabrication of its “miracle” perfluorooctanoic acid, referred to as PFOA or C8, which is part of a group of man-made chemicals, used in Teflon products manufactured in the early 1960s. The dust and sludge from the chemicals were eventually found in significant water supply quantities, affecting 70,000 residents of Parkersburg, West Virginia. And that’s just the beginning.

Because of ongoing trial work spanning more than 20 years, Bilott continues to file restitution lawsuits for the thousands of people suffering cancer, thyroid disease, kidney failure, and prenatal and birth defects.

He convinces juries that Dupont is not only responsible for killing nearly an entire town, but also infecting 99% of all human life with the so-called “forever chemicals,” impervious to breaking down or biodegrading, which can accumulate in the human body. Scientific advancement is rarely without penalty, but Bilott’s whistle-blowing crusade tries to hold accountable a company cover up, countered

by DuPont’s in-house corporate counsel Phil Donnelly (Victor Garber).

“Dark Waters” is a one-sided take on a divisive issue, but one person on Bilott’s side is his wife, Sarah (Anne Hathaway), who

defends her under-appreciated husband to his superiors. He fights the good fight and that is not the hallmark of a coward or a failure.

When I compared this picture to “Erin Brockovich” it really worried me about how little fanfare “Dark Waters” has generated.

Julia Roberts took the same basic plot, her million-dollar smile and turned it into an Academy Award-winning box office smash. Look how cinema has changed in one generation.

“Dark Waters” runs 127 minutes and is rated PG-13 for thematic content, some disturbing images and strong language. I give this film three stars out of four.
