CASE STUDY
Our Impact for a Hospital System Client: $1.69M in Savings in Year One Brian Varner, founder of Safety Solutions for Healthcare, worked with a large hospital system that was facing increased injuries and lost time claims within its support services department. Claims costs had grown 48% in the past year alone. Varner’s team was called in to rebuild the hospital system’s safety platform from the ground up.
OUR FINDINGS Our initial research and assessment revealed several important factors. The hospital had never established a robust safety and claims program. Human resources was managing claims, while a maintenance employee oversaw the safety program. There was no collaboration between HR and maintenance to identify the drivers of injuries, or to develop prevention programs involving training, awareness and compliance. The client’s rising injury rates were being driven primarily by strains, which accounted for more than half of all injuries. The number of days out of work for injured employees had risen year-over-year for a three-year period by 47%, with no return-to-work program in place.
KEY CHALLENGES: • The hospital system was large, consisting of 13 hospitals averaging 400 beds each. • Support Services employees converted from in-house employees to contract employees. • The client had never developed a robust safety program. • C-Suite leadership had experienced a high level of turnover. • Trust between management and staff was at an all-time low. • Patient satisfaction scores were being negatively impacted by the work-related injuries and out-of-work days of the system’s employees.
