ather’s Day is this month and we here at Southern Minn SCENE are all about the music so I wanted to celebrate some of the dads of rock. The rock ‘n roll lifestyle did not always make for model fatherhood, but here are some of the “Dads of Rock” that rock:

MOLLY PENNY Molly Penny is a local radio personality and MSU Mankato alum. It was her love of pop culture that got her interested in doing a morning show gig for KOWZ 100.9. She is now Music and Promotions Director at KOWZ & KRUE Radio in Owatonna and can be heard on various airwaves in Southern Minnesota, including Hot 96.7 in Mankato. She resides in Mankato with her movie buff husband and YouTube obsessed children. Need to contact her?

While it was marketed as a reality show, many of the shows’ themes were created by producers, including in Season 3 when Gene purchases an Australian Football Team. There is no actual record of this purchase, but it made for good ratings. The show was a hit largely because of the witty back and forth between Simmons and his children, particularly his son Nick who followed in his father’s footsteps and is in a band.

Another child, a boy, named Conor, was born in 1986 out of an affair with Italian model Lory Del Santo. Tragically, he died at the age of four after falling out of the bedroom window of the 53rd floor of a Manhattan apartment building.

The song ‘Tears In Heaven’ was written for his son, Conor.

Clapton later married Melia McEnery in 2002 and the couple have three daughters together, Julie Rose, Ella May and Sophie Bell all born between 2001 and 2005.

Aerosmith’s iconic front man Steven Tyler is the father of four, but his first shot at fatherhood, a child with his groupie girlfriend Julia Holcombe actually resulted in abortion as he feared the child would have birth defects due to the couple’s rampant drug use. They found out that the child was a boy, and his band members say that the abortion “really messed Steven up.” Tyler’s most famous daughter, Liv, stemmed from his brief relationship with fashion model Bebe Buell. He was not very present in her life until she started auditioning and following in his footsteps in the entertainment industry.

Liv got her dad’s famous big lips and was featured in a few of Aerosmith’s videos as a teen. He went on to have another daughter with an ex-Warhol model Cyrinda Foxe whom he wed in 1978.

Their daughter Mia became a plus sized model. In 1988 Tyler married clothing designer Teresa Barrick and fathered another daughter, Chelsea Anna in 1989, and a son named Taj Monroe born in 1991. The rock and roll legend is now sober and loves being a grandfather.

KISS bassist and vocalist Gene Simmons followed in Ozzy Osborne’s footsteps of being a rockstar dad who showcased his fatherhood in a reality TV series Gene Simmons Family Jewels which aired from 2006-2012 on A&E. The show follows his longtime partner and wife Shan-

Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger is 75 years old and has not slowed down one bit. Not only is he still shaking his hips even after just undergoing heart surgery, he has not slowed down when it comes to having kids. Jagger boasts eight children ranging from 3 to 49 years old, along with five grand children and one great grandchild. His first child, a daughter named Karis, was born from a love affair with statuesque black model Marsha Hunt in 1970.

Makes sense because while living with Hall, Jagger had an affair with a Brazillian fashion model named Luciana Giminez who have birth to his seventh child, Lucas in 1999. If that wasn’t enough kids for a lifetime, the 73 year old great grandfather welcomed his eighth and final child, Deveraux Octavian Basil Jagger with his decades younger girlfriend Melanie Hamrick in 2016.

73 year old Canadian singer songwriter Neil Young is the father of three He had his oldest son Zeke, born in 1972, with actress Carrie Snodgress. He then married Pegi Morton in 1977 with whom he had two children, Ben in 1978 and Amber Jean in 1984. His son Ben has cerebral palsy.

Young has been very supportive of charities for disabilities because of his son. Together they explored Ben’s physical abilities with his own childhood pastime of playing with model trains together.

Young said about his son, “Ben has taught me you never give up. You can’t say, ‘This is too hard.’ It can’t be too hard. There are so many kids with challenges that are so great and yet they just keep trying. So if I come up against something that’s hard to deal with, I can handle it and it’s because of him.” Ben, who runs an organic chicken farm on the Young ranch, goes on every tour with his father.

Young calls him their “spiritual leader.”

If you’re putting together your family’s summer calendar – and face it, after a long winter, you’ve earned some fun – here’s a good start.a In Minnesota, winter is the real deal … and that makes summer that much sweeter. Whether you seek culture, community, or comfort food, these amazing festivals prove that small towns, everywhere around you, know how to throw big celebrations. With quirky traditions you won’t find anywhere else, local culinary specialties, and parades down Main Street; community festivals bring out the best in small towns and make for one-ofa-kind experiences for visitors. From seasonal food and flower celebrations, to re-creations of times gone by, here are some charming small-town festivals that are worth the jaunt. {Wonderful Winona} Steamboat Days (June 12-16); every summer, Winona pays homage to its roots as a bustling Mississippi River port, with Steamboat Days – a celebration that makes the city hum with excitement. A carnival midway, nightly live music, races, food galore, a grand parade, and fireworks are just a few of the reasons people flock to town for the annual event. Dixieland Jazz Festival (July 13) at Winona State University campus; each June, the one-day festival kicks off

with performances by local musicians as well as regional greats who bring the foot-tapping sounds of banjos, horns, and ragtime piano to the masses that turn out. The festival is 30 years strong and free to attend, sponsored by the Upper Mississippi Jazz Society. Great Dakota Gathering (September 7-8) at Unity Park by East Lake; Winona honors its history as the ancestral home of the Dakota tribe each fall with the Great Dakota Gathering, an event that invites tribal members to come to Winona for several days to share their stories, their beliefs, and their rich cultural heritage. Boats & Bluegrass Festival (September 26-29) at Prairie Island Campground; set on the banks of the Mississippi River, the Boats & Bluegrass Festival has become iconic among music aficionados for its jaw-dropping lineups that extend for three days and feature some of the Midwest’s favorite bluegrass and folk performers. Musicians from across the country round out the roster of more than 40 bands set to take the stage. {Pretty Peterson} Peterson Summer Events; find anything you are looking for on June 21-22 at the 4th annual 60-Mile Garage Sale. Nine Root River Trail Towns team up to throw a huge garage sale, packed with lots of goodies. Gammel Dag Fest (Saturday, June 22 - Sunday, June 23) Help celebrate the longest day of the year with a Scandinavian Midsummer Celebration. Hormel Nature Center, family-friendly projects, activities and educational events are featured each day. Then Freedom Fest runs from June 28 through July 4; a huge celebration with games, sports, parades, vendors, entertainment, food, dances, contests, music, and of course wonderful fireworks. August brings the 8th Annual ArtWorks Festival, which takes place in the heart of downtown Austin. It’s a fulfilling celebration of art in all its forms. {Ooooooh

Owatonna} at Owatonna West Hills Complex; some-thirty regional artists will be showing and selling their creations at “Art on the Hills”, Saturday, July 27, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, July 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (on the lawn of the Owatonna Arts Center at the West Hills Complex). Sharon is an avid supporter of the community arts. {Hooray for Houston} Houston Hoedown Days, a top-ten Minnesota Celebration, is always the last full weekend in July (this year, 26-28). It kicks-off with a kiddie parade on Friday afternoon. From there, it’s a full weekend packed with food, tractor pulls, kids’ activities, car shows, a flea market, a softball tournament, live music at the fest grounds-nightly, craft beer tasting, grand parade, and much more. {Lovely Lakeville} Lakeville Pan-O-Prog (Panorama of Progress); This tremendous festival runs July 4 - 14. The celebration includes a multitude of events for a wide range of ages. The two largest events are “Cruise Night”, on Friday, July 12, and the Grand Parade, on Saturday, July 13 (both draw 15,000 - 20,000 spectators). Lakeville VFW Post 210 is celebrating their 100th anniversary this year and they have some large-scale activities planned; including an 80% replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall, along with vehicles and reenactments, a Hall of Heroes and several other activities.

The wall will be up from the afternoon of July 8 through noon on July 14. This festival has been held annually since 1967. {Romp in Red Wing} Summer in Red Wing; July 3-Kidz Bop World Tour 2019 & Fireworks, Live! at the Treasure Island Amphitheater. Amphitheater show ticket includes access to Kidz Bop, food and drink stands, free inflatables, complimentary 3D fireworks glasses and synchronized music during the fireworks. Doors open at 6 p.m. for inflatables and food & beverages. July 4-Fireworks in downtown Red Wing begin at dusk. River City Days is August 2-4. This is Red Wing’s premier summer festival and features many family-friendly events, including free, live entertainment, arts & crafts, parade, Taste of Red Wing, tournaments, pancake breakfast, beer tent, Sidewalk Daze and much more. {Stewartville Sizzles} Stewartville Summerfest July 3 – 6; Summerfest is the largest celebration of the year in Stewartville, and it is hosted by The Stewartville Area Chamber of Commerce. “It’s the best time of year to catch up with family and friends, as many come back to celebrate in their hometown of Stewartville. There is something for everyone during these four days of intense fun,” commented Chamber Administrator Gwen Ravenhorst.

Park. {Festive Kenyon} The Kenyon Rose Fest takes place on the 3rd weekend of August (this year it is 16-18). There are street dances on Friday and Saturday nights, town-wide garage sales, book sales, a vendors and farmers market, an amazing car show on Saturday; followed by a parade at 4 p.m., which features the always exciting Shriner Units. There are plenty of food vendors for the weekend and activities for all ages.

Some of the family fun activities include Bingo and a free Pool Party Friday night, as well as a challenge course at 7 p.m.; Saturday includes a kids’ tractor pull and an all-ages dance in the evening. The festivities also boast many tours and wine tasting at the historic Gunderson House; and a 5K run on Saturday. “On Sunday, we end the fest with a 2:00 p.m. Field of Flags Closing; it is a very impressive and touching ceremony,” said Julie Sokoloski, city spokesperson. {Le Sueur Summer Fun} The Giant Celebration in Le Sueur is August 2, 3, & 4 and it is held in the American Legion Park. Giant Celebration is a three-day community event and is a fun-filled weekend. All three days many activities are planned for young and old. Sunday crowds line the 90-something unit Giant Celebration Parade at 1:00 p.m.

Following the parade is the Giant Corn Feed.

Approximately 8-10 tons of corn are donated by Seneca, rolled in 78 pounds of butter, donated by Crystal Farms, and is all prepared by Agropur.

Other activities include Youth Fun Run, Human Foosball, 3-on-3 Basketball, Car Show, and an Arts & Craft sale; and music in the park all day Saturday. {Fun in Faribault} Managed by Paradise Center for the Arts volunteers, and sponsored by the community, The Blue Collar – Music and Arts Festival, unfolds on August 10. The end-of-summer Faribault celebration showcases a family-oriented mix of live music, arts and crafts, BBQ competition, great food and activities for all ages in historic downtown Faribault. Music Line Up: Lakelanders Barbershop Chorus; Sawtooth Brothers (bluegrass); Greasy Biscuits (Grand Ole Opry-style); Sawyer’s Dream (70’s-style rock/Woodstock); Moses Oakland (blues cover jam); PK Mayo (awardwinning original Blue’s artist Paul Mayasich); Martin Zellar and the Hardways (MN Rock and Americana); Street Talk (favorite covers).

The {Taste of the Trail} takes place the first three weekends after Labor Day along the Root River Trail Towns. Sep. 7: Peterson, Whalan, Lanesboro; Sep. 14: Harmony, Preston, Fountain; Sep. 21: Rushford Area, Houston. It’s three weekends of tasting the food, culture and fun along the Root River Trail Towns.

Each town has a different setup. People are encouraged to ride the trail and check out each town. “We do have a lot of people that use it as an excuse for a road trip. You can taste food from different restaurants, listen to local music and learn more about what the Root River Trail Towns are all about,” said Gabby Kinneberg, Preston Chamber of Commerce Representative. T

here’s nothing quite like watching a military jet shoot across the sky above your head, as you crane your neck to watch its ascent, a snow-white plume tracing a path behind it. The air seems heavy as you wait, holding your breath, attuned to just how quiet everything is around you until… BOOM! The sound finally catches up to its supersonic creator.

Now, imagine six of those jets, steely gray streaks splashing zooming through the clouds in perfect harmony. As the two on the edge peel off from the main group, two others start to lose altitude. As you start wondering what’s going on, the remaining two jets flip over with a lazy grace that belies just how difficult their maneuvers are. Now, they’re flying upside down, in perfect alignment with the two jets underneath them, their tails only inches apart.

You can hardly believe your eyes, but that’s just the start of the show when it comes to the famous USAF Thunderbirds.

It’s all part of the fun during the semi-annual Minnesota Air Spectacular, one of Mankato’s biggest events. The show was first organized in 2003, and it has grown ever since, constantly evolving as it brings in more and more aerial acts.

Preparing for takeoff Mankato first began hosting air shows in 1999, bringing in the USAF Thunderbirds as the first show’s headlining act.

The roughly $700,000 event is organized by several partners, including the Civic Center, the Department of Public Safety, the Parks Department, Blue Earth County, MN State Patrol, other representatives from the city of Mankato, the Mankato Regional Airport Commission, local businesses and local volunteers.

“There’s a lot of moving parts,” said Eric Jones, co-director of the Civic Center and one of the event’s main organizers. “It’s not just the Civic Center, it’s the whole city of Mankato and a great group of volunteers. Everybody takes a piece of it, from volunteers to concessions. We’ve all gone through it before, [so] when it comes together like it is right now, it works.”

The show has been organized sporadically throughout the years, with events in 1999, 2003, 2012 and 2015. In nearly every show, the Thunderbirds were the headliners, though the U.S. Navy Blue Angels filled that slot in 2012.

Jones said there have been quite a lot of changes throughout the years, even though the basic idea of the show has stayed the same. One of the biggest issues that the event’s organizers had to figure out in the earlier days was the question of parking. There were so many people who wanted to come watch the show, parking became a headache in 2012 when spring rains left the temporary, nonpaved parking lots a muddy mess.

“If you’ve ever been to an air show, some of the greatest drama is watching the pilots get into their planes, turn on those jet engines and taxi down the runway. It makes a big difference in the quality of the air show.” - Burt Lyman “We spent a lot of time trying to fix the parking issues,” he said. “But we got it down to a science.”

The 2015 show was particularly exciting because it was the first time the Thunderbirds were able to land at the Mankato Regional Airport. When they performed in 2003, the airport’s runway wasn’t long enough for them to land, so instead they flew out of the Minneapolis airport, performed the show, and returned to the Twin Cities without ever touching down on the

However, the Mankato Regional Airport extended its runway shortly before the 2015 show, giving the jets the ability to land.

“If you’ve ever been to an air show, some of the greatest drama is watching the pilots get into their planes, turn on those jet engines and taxi down the runway,” said Burt Lyman, former director of the Civic Center and one of the event’s previous organizers. “It makes a big difference in the quality of the air show.”

Who’s flying When it comes to planning air shows, the first step is even being selected by the military to host one of its performance teams, such as the U.S.A.F. Thunderbirds, which most recently came to Mankato in 2015. The military group performs for free, but the city organizers need to prove they’re able to put on one spectacular show.

That was a problem for Mankato following its 2015 show, which saw a 10 percent drop in audience members and ended up losing $20,000 for the city. This derailed Mankato’s hopes to host a show

every three years, but the city was able to secure the Thunderbirds for 2019. This will be the fourth time the Thunderbirds headline.

Other acts have included the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, aerobic flyers Team Oracle and John Klatt, comedic pilot Kent Pietsch, wingwalker Tony Kazian (flying with Dave Dacy), and pretty much any other aerial performer you can imagine.

Jones said the city has been working on this year’s show about two years. He explained that the show has a committee that attends an air show convention every December in Las Vegas to talk to different performers and see who’s available, in order that they can provide a variety of acts and performers during the show.

“We want to have a little bit of something for everybody,” he said.

Jones said besides the Thunderbirds, this year’s show will feature a 1929 biplane retrofitted with a jet engine (nicknamed the “Screamin’ Sasquatch”), a stunt plane performer that can land on an RV, the Socom Para-Commandos joint-service parachute demonstration team, and Michael Wiskus, a 2002 U.S. National Aerobatic Champion. Crowds will also get to watch famed female Minnesota aviator Julie Clark, one of America’s first female commercial airline pilots, who has been flying for more than 50 years and is retiring after this season. Meanwhile, on the ground side of things, the audience can check out Shockwave, the world’s fastest jet-powered truck (putting out 36,000 horsepower thanks to three engines), which has a speed record of 376 mph.

While the Air Show has featured many of these performers before, Jones said they always make sure to bring something new for the audience.

“They do update their show, so every time it’s a little different,” he said.

Hopes for this year Jones said the goal this year is to pull in crowds of around 40,000 people, which would be close to 2015’s numbers.

“I think if we have beautiful weather and all things considered,

we should have [those numbers],” he said.

While it might seem like watching airplanes could get old from year to year, Jones said they actually have many repeat visitors, who make a point of coming to every show. He added that whether an audience member is an old pro or coming for the first time, there’s always something for everyone.

“It’s something you don’t necessarily get to see

every day,” he said. “As many times as I’ve seen [the Thunderbirds], it still gives me goosebumps to watch.

It’s such an amazing performance that doesn’t get old.”

N

early five years ago, a group of eclectic budding artists and musicians gathered in Winona with a simple goal: to create.

Largely comprised of Winona State University students, they were poets, hip hop artists, filmmakers, writers, and local musicians, who met to create and work on their passion projects together. Today, that group is a leader in the Winona arts scene -- promoting, hosting, and creating with artists across multiple platforms in southeastern Minnesota.

Treedome is a collaborative arts organization, focused on fostering spaces, opportunities, and inspiration for the thriving arts scene in southeastern Minnesota, said co-founder, president, and creative director Nathaniel Nelson.

The best way to describe the group, Nelson explained, is that it acts like a hired gun record label. They step in when artists need support, a space to do their work, and locations to play and display their creations, but the group steps back to let

the artist reap the benefits of the sale and own their creations.

“The biggest thing is southeastern Minnesota doesn’t have the same kind of support that Minneapolis and St. Paul have,” Nelson said. “There is this massive arts scene down here, but it is scattered. It doesn’t have institutional support. You have bubbles around different styles and organizations.”

Growing where they were planted Back in September 2016, when the group of artists and musicians decided to turn their meet-ups into a tangible group, Nelson said they had no clue where it was headed. “[It was] exciting, but also terrifying,” Nelson said. “We don’t still entirely know everything that we need to know about running an organization. Back then we knew nothing about running an organization, but it was something we decided to do on whim.”

Throughout its short tenure, Treedome has tried on many hats before landing on its collaboration and inspiration niche.

“We didn’t expect to be a do-it-yourself organization,” Nelson said. “Our first plan was to be a video production company, which lasted about a week. Then we wanted to be a record label, and that lasted not much longer than a week.”

With each project and identity Treedome took on, Nelson said, the more it noticed a need for representation and support of the underground yet thriving arts scene in Winona.

Today, Treedome has grown from booking one event a month to booking 10 gigs at five different locations across southern Minnesota and into surrounding states each month.

Its growth is in no small part thanks to the support of various donors and grant awards they have been given.

Back in its infancy stages, Treedome was awarded $5,000 from the Winona State University WARRIORSInnovate Challenge and has since been awarded a grant from the Winona Main Street Program. This past April Treedome was even named one of four organizations in Minnesota and one of 130 groups across the nation to receive funding from the Meow Wolf DIY Fund.

The group has boasted a physical studio on Third Street in downtown Winona since April 2018 and has become a regular touchpoint and organizer for some of Winona’s biggest events, including the inception of its own Shut Down Third Street, created with funds from Winona’s Main Street.

“The original Shut Down Third Street was born out of an interest for Treedome to create an all-encompassing event in music and art,” Panetta said.

Hosted this fall after about three months of preparation, according to Nelson, Treedome invited citizens from Winona and the surrounding communities to gather on the city’s Third Street, peruse local shops, and engage in local music by listening, dancing, and supporting bands and musicians.

Panetta has continued taking the lead on the large-scale planning of the second

annual event, which is set for late September 2019. After hosting nearly 3,000 visitors in 2018, the scale of the event is still primed for growth, Panetta said.

“We’re really excited this year to boast some higher up bands, as well as continuing the theme, as well as spotlighting local musicians,” Panetta said. “We’ll have an increase in a number of bands and locations, including Island City Brewing.”

The Winona brewery has become a popular destination in the river city, but its addition plays a special role, Panetta said. The

Regardless of the additions, Panetta and Nelson agree that the focus will remain the same.

“We wanted to make a party in the streets,” Nelson said. “[It] goes back to this same idea.

make music and art a collaborative community piece? How do we rally the community around art and now just make it a consumable item?”

Sticking around Winona The transformation of the now-college graduates that first began this organization with the mission of working on their own creations to then become an integral part of the Winona culture within a matter of years isn’t lost on Nelson.

“Being that we were all college students and not being part of Winona, there is a barrier between college students and the town,” Nelson said. “When we started, we had the people we knew and artists in, the musicians within the college sphere… We expanded, and it feels like we’re part of the wider part of Winona.”

Treedome has had to become civically engaged while planning events like Shut Down Third Street, which included meeting with the city council and presenting its ideas and plans to a wider circle than just their arts community.

City of Winona Arts and Culture Coordinator Lee Gundersheimer has firsthand experience with Treedome’s local influence.

“They’re hungry and awesome enough to be working with the whole region,” Gundersheimer said.

The city’s goal in working with Treedome, Gundersheimer said, is to give them the space to flourish, which will ultimately help their arts and culture scene continue to blossom.

Winona’s art scene has always been lively, Gundersheimer added, but the addition of Treedome gives it the infrastructure it craved.

Despite finding a path, Nelson said the group is still open to whatever avenues come up. Panetta added that the group continues to be inspired and supportive of local events and music festivals, such as Winona-born Mid West Music Fest.

Yet despite the success, Treedome isn’t looking to leave the region that supported its first steps and eventual expansion.

“I feel that this region is more ripe for growth,” Nelson said, adding that larger communities, such as the Twin Cities, already have similar, urban-focused support systems.

“You don’t see that as much here in southeastern Minnesota,” Nelson continued, “and that’s not because there’s less quality bands, but they just don’t have that huge support and rallying behind it. he county fair, like Christmas, arrives just once a year. And like Christmas, it requires colossal advanced preparation, it’s shadowed by a rowdy surge of jollity and silliness, and then it’s over and life snaps back to reality.

County fairs unite people. Friends and neighbors gather for a few days of carnival rides, competitions, lots of food and loads of fun. The stakes in attending the county fair are generally very low: You might win $2 for exhibiting a first-place slice of pumpkin pie or hand-knit sweater, but the prestige that accompanies that humble blue ribbon goes a lot deeper than you might think. And whether you’re exhibiting your own livestock or simply admiring all the animals, livestock shows are a definite highlight of any county fair. By strolling through the various livestock buildings and show rings, you can expect to encounter all kinds of animals, ranging from horses and cows to rabbits and chickens, or goats and sheep. Of course, at the county fair, you can find an assortment of foods that are unlike those you can find anywhere else – at least not on a whim. Mounds of cotton candy in colors not naturally found in food? Things on a stick that may or may not be moving? Chicken-Fried Bacon? DeepFried Kool Aid? Fried Pickles and Chocolate? Hot Beef Sundae? Spaghetti Ice Cream? Chocolate Covered Scorpions? Sauteed Worms?

Cannon Valley Fair celebrates its 104th annual fair this summer.

“We started in 1915 to give the community an opportunity to compete in their agriculture accomplishments and their entertainment talents. This is still our goal,” stated Fair Treasurer Phyllis Althoff. Some events include open class, 4H and FFA competitions in food, handicrafts and livestock. The Fair features exciting grandstand events such as: Demo Derby (a sell out each year), Truck and Tractor Pull, Combine Derby (also an historic sell out) and Harness Horse Racing. Music is a big part of the celebration and many bands are highlighted on the free stage. Goldstar Amusements are on the grounds offering carnival rides and games. arbeque season is upon us once again in Minnesota, complete with sunburns, 10 p.m. sunsets and staying out past your bedtime.

Summer brings about a drastic change in weather along with a noticeable disruption in our daily habits.

It’s hard to resist staying out until the sun goes down and even harder to say no to a giant cheeseburger and a cold beer after a volleyball game, and honestly, who wants to say no to that?

As Minnesotans, we need to soak up all the Vitamin D we can get, and I’m sure I don’t need to convince you that you need a cheeseburger.

Wait a minute, didn’t you make a New Years resolution to finally lose 20lbs? You were going strong during the winter months, but these Minnesota summers are testing your will power. Every week you say the same thing to yourself, “I need to get to sleep earlier and start eating better again”, until your friend calls and asks if you want to sub for their Tuesday night volleyball league. Blast! Your diet is derailed again and the cycle starts all over. It might seem like a trap but trust me, it doesn’t have to be this way. What if I told you that with a little planning, it’s quite simple to have a social life and stick to your health and fitness goals. All you have to do is sneak veggies into the bar and swap out your beer for a water.

Despite what many people may believe, managing body weight comes down to the simple equation of calories in v.s calories out. It’s possible to lose 20 lbs by only drinking beer and eating twinkies, but that doesn’t mean you can eat whatever you want, because you still need to fill up on quality protein and leafy greens to stay healthy and energetic, but you can plan for a few IPAs and chicken wings without jeopardizing your fitness goals. As long as you are accurately tracking your calorie intake, it is always possible to enjoy a steak off the grill and lose weight. You might even have room for a cold one. The next time you are at a summer gathering and the potatoe salad is staring at you in the face, ask yourself these questions.

1. Have I eaten fruits and vegetables today?

2. Have I eaten adequate protein today?

3. Do I have room for this meal in my daily calories?

If you can answer yes to all three of these questions then yes, you probably have a little bit of wiggle room without sabotaging your diet.

For example, you are planning to have a few friends over for dinner but you don’t want to lose track of your fitness goals. The menu consists of burgers (with cheese of course), baked beans, potato salad and your favorite dessert. Truthfully, this is a high calorie meal, but it doesn’t have to keep you from losing weight. Here is a breakdown of the meal.

Dessert 300 calories This entire meal contains 1,100 calories.

Now, lets say your daily caloric intake required to lose weight is 2,200 calories (this is just an example). This means that as long as you only ate 1,100 calories over the course of breakfast and lunch you can still enjoy an evening with friends without sacrificing your fitness goals.

O

ne of Minnesota’s oldest resorts is getting a once-in-a-generation makeover that includes a metro-style boutique hotel, a wedding chapel, 41 own-to-rent cottages and more.

Total price tag, including the private own-to-rent investment: $50 million.

If you know the Brainerd Lakes area and Grand View Lodge on Gull Lake, that may seem like a lot -- maybe too much. But Managing Director Mark Ronnel, who has worked at the resort for 41 years, says the family-owned business is keenly aware that it’s the traditional North Woods qualities that have made it a destination for 103 years.

“During my years here, we’ve grown from serving 150 guests to serving a thousand,” Ronnel said.

“During that time, the thing I hear over and over is, things are bigger, better, newer — there’s more activity — but the charm and feel is the same.”

That charm comes first of all from the old log lodge, which is perfectly sited on a rise above the wide beach amid towering red pines, with flower gardens, flags flying and every conceivable water toy available on the sand. It’s on one of Minnesota’s largest and prettiest lakes, about 140 miles north of the Twin Cities and just under four hours from Rochester -- “far enough away that it feels

like you’re up north on vacation, yet it’s still close enough to drive here after work,” says Frank Soukup, the resort’s marketing director.

And at the end of the day, it’s the 2,500 feet of sandy beach on a big, sparkling lake surrounded

by Norway pines that brings people back. “We have the best beach in MInnesota, and that’s saying a lot,” Ronnel said.

Boutique hotel opens in July Work is nearly done on the $10 million boutique hotel, called North. The 60-room hotel is a more “urban take on the traditional guest lodge,” he said. Construction began in spring 2018 and the goal is to have it open in July, with a high-end finish and full amenities, but with character to match the resort.

When it opens, Grand View will have rooms, cabins and investor-owned rentals for nearly 1,500 guests. Along with the new hotel, a new 17,000-square-foot recreation center opened in March with an indoor pool, outdoor pool, fitness and yoga studios, and “cornhole stadium” for bean-bag tossers, but the biggest attraction may be the Paul Bunyan-size outdoor hot tub, open 365 days a year, rain, snow or shine, with room for 32 people. “When it was 12 below in early March, there were 28 people out there,” Ronnel said.

The 640-acre property is big enough to feature a 27-hole golf course, an 18-hole course and a new 7-hole putting course. Even so, about 150 acres of birch and pine woods are untouched, and Ronnel said, “I don’t know that we’re going to get much bigger anytime soon.”

A good reason to proceed slowly after this burst of construction is to keep private vacation home owners happy. The project includes 41 own-torent cottages, which were sold not long after the project was launched last year, with prices ranging from $495,000 to $1.1 million.

The historic lodge, which looks out on the lake through an avenue of pines and is bedecked with hanging baskets and flags, will hit the century mark in 2021. The lobby; with its rubble fireplace, moose antler chandeliers, cracked leather couches and uneven floor boards, has the feel of the grand national park lodges out west.

lodge’s inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. It was added to the list 50 years ago this year.

The 12-room lodge hasn’t had a head-to-toe renovation for many years, though work is always being done on a century-old building, said Ronnel, whose first job at the resort four decades ago was night auditor, 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. in the lodge.

“We’ve remodelled some of the units in the lodge six times during my years here,” he said.

Among the building’s attractions: The Northwoods Pub, a rathskeller with live music most nights during the summer to draw people from around the lake, and a lavish Sunday brunch in the Lodge Dining Room. The resort has eight restaurants and bars, including a steakhouse called Char, which opened last year, and Cru, with a more contemporary menu and a wine cellar that earned a Wine Spectator award in 2017.

Not a mom-and-pop resort While Grand View is a family-owned enterprise -- the Cote family has been in charge since 1937 -- it’s not a mom-and-pop operation. Cote Family Destinations also owns two nearby summer camps as well as the 150-year-old Tanque Verde Ranch in Tucson, which offers “the ultimate dude ranch experience.”

Gull Lake -- and they work as a team to market the region. “It’s more important for us to get people into the community first.

We all offer something completely different,” and once people experience the Gull Lake area, they’ll be back, Ronnel said.

Cragun’s, the 79-year-old resort at the other end of Gull Lake, is adding a housing development along its 45-hole Legacy golf course, a project that likely will be valued at $15 million when finished, said Eric Peterson, Cragun’s general manager.

About $5 million in new cabins and guest room improvements have been made in the past 18 months, and in March, the resort acquired the 65-foot Destiny tour boat, which is one of the lake’s major visitor attractions.

“Business is very strong in the Brainerd area and overall, but we still have a lot of opportunity to continue to grow, which is shown by the investments that the major resorts are making,” Peterson said.

Like Ronnel, Peterson said the region’s larger resorts, which include Ruttger’s and Breezy Point, work together to bring in

visitors. “We don’t spend a lot of time chasing each other’s business,” said Peterson, who worked for Grand View for 18 years before moving to Cragun’s. “We’re more interested in getting people to come to the area, and if they come here once, they’ll be back.” SMS

There are seven Gull Lakes in Minnesota, but the largest is in the Brainerd Lakes area, where some of the state’s oldest and most popular resorts are located.

Grand View Lodge is on the north end, while Cragun’s and Madden’s are at the south end on Wilson and Steamboat bays. Cragun’s has about three-quarters of a mile of lake frontage.

ometimes you don’t have to travel far to get away.

And sometimes simplicity is best. Especially when the idea comes about rather spontaneously on a Sunday afternoon.

My husband is a good navigator and knows me well enough to know that unchartered territory is my favorite territory. It satiates my curiosities and needn’t be fancy or indulgent. So long as it’s unique.

We followed the Mississippi River to the east from Rochester and within an hour were hiking a flat and paved riverside trail in Dresbach. As I’ve previously lamented, it was a long winter. But on this spring day the robins sang. The sun was warm.

And the river flowed. My husband paused to watch the Canadian Pacific roll by.

Our next random stop was at the La Crescent Flea Market, which is open every weekend. We didn’t buy a thing but had fun browsing the expansive labyrinth of novelties. A spendy vintage Dukes of Hazzard lunch box caught my eye and brought me back to the Friday night television lineup in the days of my youth. Yee haw!

And because no adventure is complete without a little food in the belly – or, in this case, a lot – we dipped into Onalaska, WI for dinner at SeñorVilla Mexican Grill & Bar. The food – including the tender pork and sweet chimichanga cheesecake – was both tasty and inexpensive.

It was time to follow the river home. SMS Freelance writer and photographer Elizabeth Nida Obert, a former newspaper staff photographer for 18 years, has degrees in both and is passionate about telling stories in words and pictures. She thrives on travel and adventure and is always looking forward to where the next open road – or door – will lead.

Preston’s Branding Iron

he Branding Iron Supper Club, which had served southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa for decades, closed its doors earlier this year. A circa 50-year Preston mainstay, the panoramicview establishment has been revived and is now being directed by new owners Dale and Becky Koch.

After 56 combined years as employees at the restaurant, Becky says she and Dale are still waiting for their new roles to sink in. “Never in our wildest dreams did we ever think we would own the Branding Iron Supper Club.

Dale’s dream was to have a restaurant someday…we just never imagined it would be the Branding Iron!” Becky exclaimed. The Kochs have made some minor changes, such as new lighting outside, removing the western border in the bar area and some paintings, but no drastic changes have been made.

“Pretty much what people used to see is what they are going to see,” said Dale.

Future plans include outdoor seating with a patio on the south side, overlooking the valley. “I would like to dig it into the hill and add a retaining wall, so it’s lower than the dining area and won’t block the view for people dining,” explained Dale. Koch’s plan is to start construction this summer.

There are not a lot of changes to the menu. The chef salad has been added back and macaroni & cheese is a new addition for the kids. Featuring many of the good, all-time favorites, Becky and Dale present an awesome, comprehensive menu. mooth and soulful, Free Spirit is a nearly perfect sophomore album from a young R&B Master.

Khalid Free Spirit

The Internet gets blamed for a lot of things, including fake news, scams and distractions, but one of the real benefits is the ability for talent to reach an audience on their own terms and free of “corporate record labels.” Such is the case with Khalid Donnel Robinson. As a teenager experimenting with music in High School, he soon began posting his songs on Soundcloud. This eventually attracted label attention and led to his first singles, “Location” and “Young, Dumb & Broke” hitting R&B and Pop Charts. With Free Spirit, Khalid builds on the success of his 2017 debut, American Teen, to deliver a winning sophomore release.

Khalid may have recently turned 21, but Free Spirit sounds as if crafted by an old soul. Melodies are effortless with smoothly understated vocals making this album a romantically perfect, slow-jam, late-night keeper. Molded in the classic form of R&B, Khalid deftly incorporates modern sounds throughout to appeal to a wide variety of ages.

R&B music has always incorporated passionate “come hither” lyrical offerings to match sensuous groves, but on Free Spirit, Khalid suggests a shyer, more romantic overture as opposed to the raw sexuality Marvin Gaye displayed on his classic 1973 album Let’s Get It On. This is an uncommon approach found among pop music and is a welcome trend. This is album is libidinous, but respectful.

Full of radio-friendly singles like “Talk,” “My Bad,” and “Self,” Free Spirit is destined to exist as one of those albums that music fans will hear on radio and various streamed Music playlists throughout the warmer, summer months to come. It is smoothly understated, but solidly embeds its melodies in the listener’s ears long after they think they have moved on.

“Right Back” is one of the key tracks that best define Free Spirit as a complete album. A simple repeated keyboard part with minor melodic inversions lays the foundation over equally uncomplicated beats as the artist reaches out to a former lover in an attempt to re-kindle a relationship that once was. It is nostalgic in feel, but fluid in delivery.

“Don’t Pretend” is a slight speed bump that doesn’t quite gel and sounds relatively generic against the superiority of the other album tracks. This song is notable for the barely discernable sounds of the surface noise of crackling scratches that is generally associated with old vinyl records. While partially evocative now, it will be interesting hear a copy of Free Spirit in that same format in 15 years time. Here, it is just an unnecessary sound effect that does little to evoke mood.

While “Don’t Pretend” and “Paradise” are not particularly memorable, “Hundred” is strutting with assurance and a quick, relaxed tempo. The beat matches the lyrical pressure scramble of needing to “keep moving, got a hundred things I gotta do today” that commonly accompanies modern life. If only all the daily tasks we have to do sounded as good as Khalid does here singing about them.

Spiritedly clean guitar work by John Mayer highlights “Outta My Head” and lends a creamy David Gilmour-like solo over funky guitar rhythms not too dis-

similar to the guitar sounds normally found on classic Eighties pop albums like Michael Jackson’s Thriller and “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire.

Khalid most notably references his current period of life on the jaw dropping “Twenty One” that indicates a sense of observational maturity well beyond his years.

If he only ended his record after this song, it would still likely rank high on many “Best of the Year” lists, but still works in the smooth blues of “Bluffin’” among the remaining songs before closing with the nearly perfect, confessional overtones on acoustic “Saturday Nights.”

A stunning end to an album full of breathtaking high points.

16 different producers were used among the album’s 17 songs. Normally, this number of “cooks in the kitchen” has a tendency to create an album that can sound disjointed and patchwork, but the opposite is the case here. There is a sonic unity that allows the material to seamlessly flow over its 57-minute length.

It is a talented group Khalid uses to construct this work, from Mayer to Disclosure and Stargate making this an album that is greater than its parts. That is the magic found here.

Khalid is among the unusual artists who continue to develop and become more interesting musically with each subsequent release. Considering his age, he has yet to hit his peak. This is an artist who deserves to be on your radar just as Free Spirit is a welcome soundtrack to the warmer months of summer.

Bottom Line: Khalid delivers romantic slowjam classic perfect for warm spring & summer nights.

The money you’ve amassed, the property you own, jewelry, art, and fancy cars won’t mean a thing once you’re dead and gone. No, you can’t take it with you, but in the new novel “Chronicles of a Radical Hag (with Recipes)” by Lorna Landvik, what’s been left behind?

If you asked Haze Evans how old she felt, she’d probably never say the truth (81), but not because of vanity. No, despite creaky knees and her status as the oldest employee at the Granite Creek Gazette, she preferred to focus on staying active, curious, and productive by writing a feature column several days a week.

Or, well, she used to.

On her way home from a show at Minnesota’s Lakeside Playhouse, Haze collapsed in the car and was taken directly to the hospital. Her prognosis was iffy.

Your father’s hands were calloused and strong but, unlike the new book “Inside an Honor Killing” by Lene Wold, they were not meant for murder.

She had to lie to set up the interview.

Lene Wold knew that, as a lesbian, she was in danger just traveling through Jordan, so she made up a fictitious husband for her own safety. She lied to be prepared, should the subject come up during conversations she had with “Rahman” who, after over a year of effort, finally sat across from her in a small café.

He was a killer, but she knew that he deserved to tell his side of the story.

When he was a child, Rahman told her, he witnessed the death of a young classmate buried up to her shoulders in desert sand. The seven-year-old had been raped, he said, but that act brought shame on her family because villagers believed that she had caused it.

It’s big enough to easily fit one oversize suitcase and two roll-ons.

You’d have room for two golf bags and two overnighters; or a mid-size tent, sleeping bags, and a cooler. Your trunk is also big enough for you to lie bound and blindfolded inside, and in “Kidnap” by Anja Shortland, you’ll see how to avoid that.

In the movies, it always happens fast: someone is snatched and the hostage-takers call within minutes to ask for millions of dollars in ransom.

But no surprise: kidnapping, says Anja Shortland, is nothing like that which pop culture portrays. Based on what she knows in her work as a World Bank adviser and Somali piracy expert, Shortland shows that, in most cases, kidnapping is a civilized affair that takes deep planning on both sides.

Kidnappers, for instance, often work under a main organization that considers logistics, and monitors who is being snatched and who’s paying not to be snatched, through preset fees that come either from an individual or a corporation. This serves to self-monitor the situation and to discourage “rule-breaking” and rogues.

Swift broke all her parents’ rules and some her parents didn’t even know about, and they were purposefully careless about birth control. Even so, her pregnancy came as a surprise.

Jimi Lee’s parents kicked her out of their house. Ken Swift married her at the L.A. courthouse. She was nineteen and her dream of Harvard was gone; he was twenty-two, a husband, father, and an enforcer who busted skulls to pay for diapers for his baby girl and clothes for his increasingly unhappy wife.

And then, while on a job for San Bernardino, Ken Swift murdered a man in self-defense. Jimi Lee knew it, which only increased her discontent: she started sleeping around, drinking, leaving home the second Ken Swift arrived. Eventually, Jimi Lee told him what she wanted out of a divorce, which was everything he owned.

And that was fine with Ken Swift; things were not important. He’d never miss them, but could he ever give up Jimi Lee? What you’ll need to know about “Before We Were

Wicked” is this: there are bedroom scenes in this book.

Lots of them.

There’s also a lot of dialogue here, which may seem like overkill and can be confusing but it’s important to read it all, to set the moods of love and anger. It’s through that dialogue that author Eric Jerome Dickey lets readers watch the unfolding of a fast-paced, passionate relationship that really has no future. To shake things up, then, in the midst of our voyeurism, we glimpse the Elephant in Swift’s Room, which is his work for San Bernardino, who doesn’t appear in this novel but who acts as an irritant that prods the marriage until it explodes.

That all makes this the tightest of novels but with lots of spice, so beware. This book is hot and violent and if you can handle that, “Before We Were Wicked” will work right fine.

While Haze healed, why not reprint her old columns?

For fourteen-year-old Sam McGrath, the only thing worse than working for his Dad was working for his Mom. It didn’t help that was also caught in the middle of their impending divorce. Plus, he was a geek. Plus, he had a crush on a girl who would never look twice at him. Even if he had a driver’s license. Which he didn’t.

But he did have a job, and that was to go through Haze Evan’s old columns, helping to decide which ones to reprint in the Gazette. He hadn’t known Haze well, but he learned a lot about her from her writing.

He learned a lot about the people in his small town, too. And he learned a secret that would change everything…

Words, as you know, have power. They can influence,

impact, inspire, and incite, and in “Chronicles of a Radical Hag (with Recipes),” they come from a character that never speaks one word throughout.

No, author Lorna Landvik’s Haze is mute and ailing from page 5 forward, but that only makes her presence stronger and it imbues extra meaning to her columns and her diary, both of which, together, make up about half the book. The other half consists of a delightful unfolding of gentle drama, Mom humor, twists, and surprises revealed at a pleasant pace and wrapped in a love story to close neighbors and small towns, where people might gossip but the truth is better.

Your book club wants this book. Put it by your easy chair, bedside, or tuck it in the car. Find it in the library or the bookstore because “Chronicles of a Radical Hag (with Recipes) is a book you’ll want to take with you.

killing, and when his mother learned that he did, she packed her things and left, a departure that impacted him for the rest of his life. He vowed that what happened in his father’s house wouldn’t happen in his when he married a very conservative woman, and raised two daughters and a son.

Years later, as the younger daughter, seventeen-yearold Amina, prepared for marriage, she noticed that her nineteen-year-old sister, Aisha, seemed preoccupied.

Only when Amina overheard intimacies and learned that Aisha had fallen in love with another woman, did she understand her sister’s fears: there is no law against homosexuality in Jordan, but it’s a cultural sin that brings shame on a family, and Aisha’s secret couldn’t be held.

And so, pressured by his wife, Rahman acted to restore honor…

There is no way to soften this: “Inside an Honor Killing” is absolutely chilling.

An ice-down-the-spine account of a rape that inexplicably didn’t happen opens this book, illustrating

the dangers author Lene Wold endured to get the interviews she needed to tell this story. That, and the how and why of it, are the books’ introduction and while you’re there, Wold also shares statistics that will put you in a heightened state of anticipation, though you ultimately know what happens. Take a quick breath, then, before you plunge into Chapter One, because that’s the last chance you’ll get for air as this story alternates between Arabian Nights and Nightmare on Elm Street, between idyll and magic, and horrors we can only imagine.

This book isn’t one bit easy to read but if you’re concerned about women’s rights or current events, it’s essential that you do. But beware: “Inside an Honor Killing” will stun you almost the minute you get it in your hands.

As for the kidnapped employee, you may not be informed about the steps your business has taken on your behalf. Risk managers who specialize in danger assessment may have been hired and consultants may be involved. Almost certainly, if there’s an insurance policy, Shortland says that it’s likely to have been underwritten by Lloyds of London and you won’t be told about it. If the worst happens, professional negotiators may be hired but that could be a moot point if everybody’s already agreed on the ransom fee.

Of course, though, things could go awry, especially if you have bodyguards involved, but that’s a whole different chapter.

The good news is that the vast majority of “insured people working, travelling, and living in kidnap-prone areas” are not, statistically, in much danger. Over the last four decades, just over 2,000 people have reportedly been kidnapped.

That’s a low number – unless one of them is you…

Generally speaking, you probably don’t think of crime in the way that author Anja Shortland portrays

it here, as a business that operates eerily similar to the one where you toil. In “Kidnap,” though, she offers compelling evidence as proof. Readers can certainly expect plenty of eyebrow-raisers in this, and in learning that kidnapping is quite often manageable, much like a retail store.

And yet, this book isn’t all comparisons because there is no comparing danger and murder to your quiet office. Indeed, Shortland is quick to point out that, though 90 percent of all kidnaps end well, things can go wrong - which leads to a sobering few pages on negotiation and the price of a life.

It’s probably safe to say that you are not going to be kidnapped today. Tomorrow’s probably a good bet, too, but why take chances? “Kidnap” will open your eyes, and it could help you keep both feet square on the ground.
