total of 7,983 job vacancies or nearly 5,000 less than last year await job seekers in Davao Region in the 2019 Trabaho, Negosyo, Kabuhayan Job and Business Fair on May 1 to 2 at the Gaisano Mall of Davao.

The job fair, a collaboration between the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) XI and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 11, is one of the highlights of this year’s National Labor Day which will be marked with the theme--”Pagpupugay sa Manggagawang Pilipino.”

This was bared by DOLE XI of�icein-charge assistant regional director Jason Balais during the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) Signing with partners and press conference held on Monday, April 22 at the 4th �loor AMQ Building in Agdao, Dacudao Ave.

Balais said the jobs market will be composed of 4,682 overseas and 3,301 local job vacancies.

Compared to last year’s 12,536 job vacancies, this year’s job fair has decreased by almost 5,000 job vacancies as DOLE XI limited the maximum participating employers from from 87 to 70 considering the capacity of the venue.

Alexander Tagum said.

Tagum told reporters hours after the noontime explosion that rocked the stockroom of the Explosive Ordnance Divisions (EOD) in Camp Domingo Leonor that the UXOs, recovered from construction sites of new buildings, were stored in a storage facility away from the EOD stockroom.

The EOD stockroom stored improvised explosive devices and grenades seized from various operations in the city for evidence in court.

Tagum said it would have done more damage if the explosion had reached the storage area of the UXOs. “Kung UXOs �lattened na ning kampo namo (If UXOs

He added most of the detonators of the UXOs had been eroded when recovered by authorities but the danger of explosion remains when there is a �ire.

First set is on April 25, 2019 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Security in Davao to remain tight for Palaro

espite Saturday’s explosion inside the Davao City Police Of�ice (DCPO) headquarters, the city and the entire region was generally peacefully during the observance of the Holy Week.

This was the assessment made by the Police Regional Of�ice (PRO) – 11, but tight security measures will continue to be implemented with the upcoming 2019 Palarong Pambansa hosted by this city.

The national games will kick-off on April 27.

Police Maj. Jason Baria, PRO-11 spokesperson, attributed the peaceful observance of the Holy Week to the strengthening of security measures in the Davao Region.

Apo Agua releases construction update

po Agua Infrastructura, Inc.’s construction works are underway for Part A of the Davao City Bulk Water Supply Project which involves the construction of intake facilities, a water treatment facility and treated water pipelines.

Early this year, Apo Agua through its engineering, procurement, and construction contractor, J.V. Angeles Construction Corporation, started its construction activities at the intake and water treatment facilities. Rehabilitation of the access road to the weir site in

Brgy. Tawantawan and site preparations of the water treatment plant (WTP) site in Brgy. Gumalang, Baguio District, Davao City, were the major works conducted.

Currently, preparation works for the weir construction and excavation works for the treated wa-

ter tank at the WTP site have commenced. Laying of raw water pipelines is targeted to start in August.

Apo Agua is also taking steps to ensure the protection and conservation of the Panigan-Tamugan Watershed – Davao City’s next source of water. The company adopted 50 hectares of land in the watershed through the Davao City Water District’s Adopt-A-Site Project for the rehabilitation of this water source.

Additionally, Apo Agua and the Davao City Watershed Management Council is working on an integrated watershed management plan specifically for the Panigan-Tamugan Watershed.

These signi�icant partnerships are aimed at ensuring the long-term security of Davao City’s water supply. Apo Agua began its three-year construction phase with engineering design works in 2018 and targets to commence operations by the �irst half of 2021.

BDO posts P32.7B income in 2018;1Q19 core earnings up 21%

B

DO Unibank, Inc. (BDO) reported at its stockholders meeting today its full year 2018 results, with net income hitting P32.7 billion, representing a 17 per cent growth, and beating theP31.0 billion fullyear guidance. The bank likewise capped another milestone as the �irst Philippine bank to surpass the P3 trillion mark in total assets.

The bank attributed its solid performance to strong recurring earnings from its core businesses, with sustained loan and deposit expansion on the bank’s continued branch build out in key growth areas and new markets, particularly the underserved sectors.

1Q19 Results The bank sustained its growth momentum through the �irst quarter of this year, with net income advancing to P9.8 billion. This achievement was due to the continued expansion of its core banking operations, recovery of trading gains to normal levels, and strong results from bank fees and life insurance premiums.

Net interest income was a major earnings driver, rising to P27.7 billion on the continued growth in customer loans and CASA expansion, resulting in higher net interest margins.

Meanwhile, non-interest income went up to P14.9 billion, led by banking fees and insurance premiums. Trad-

ing and FX gains normalized to P2.2 billion from just P24 million a year-ago, given adverse market conditions during 1Q 2018 when the market declined by 7 per cent. Excluding the increase in trading gains, core net income would have risen by 21 per cent.

Operating expenses rose by 22 per cent to P28.3 billion. Exclusive of policy reserves and volume-related expenses, Opex growth would have been 13 per cent due primarily to continuing business and branch expansion as well as investments in IT upgrades implemented early this year.

Meanwhile, the Bank set aside P1.3 billion in provisions, with gross non-performing loan

(NPL) ratio steady at 1.2 per cent, and NPL cover higher at 163 per cent from 156 per cent in the 1Q 2018. Return on Common Equity (ROCE) however, stood at 11.8%, still below regional peers.

The Bank’s capital base increased to P338.4 billion, with Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) and Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) at 14.0 per cent and 12.4 per cent, respectively.

BDO set its earnings guidance at P38.5 billion for the full-year 2019, as the Bank leverages on its strong business franchise and extensive distribution network while executing its strategy to expand across highgrowth areas and underserved segments.

he National Food Authority (NFA) will continue to operate even with the rice tarif�ication law in place, but it needs to strengthen its logistics capacity, ensuring that the government has enough buffer stocks of this staple grain with nationwide reach at all times, according to the Department of Finance (DOF).

Finance Assistant Secretary Antonio Joselito Lambino II said that starting March 5 when Republic Act (RA) No. 11203 or the Rice Tarif�ication Act took effect, the NFA’s import licensing and other regulatory functions ceased, although the crucial role of emergency buffer stocking remains and has been emphasized.

Under the law imposing tariffs on rice imports in lieu of quantitative restrictions, private traders would now be allowed to import rice so long as they comply with basic requirements set by the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) for food safety and protection of our farming areas, Lambino said at a recent media forum in Quezon City.

Lambino said the NFA’s task of regulating the rice sector was removed owing to the agency’s “inef�iciencies” resulting from a controlled import system, and which left the agency saddled in debt amounting to about P145 billion.

Domestic rice prices also continue to be high compared to other countries in the region despite the NFA’s regulatory role, with farmers not bene�iting as much as other players in

the industry under the previous quantitative restriction regime, Lambino said.

But under RA 11203, he explained at the media forum that farmers would get to bene�it directly from the import tariffs through the new Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF), which would have an assured annual allocation of P10 billion, regardless of the amount generated from import tax collections.

As an advanced complimentary measure to the RCEF, the government has already released P5 billion in December 2018 to assist farmers in becoming globally competitive as the country shifts to a rice-tarif�ied system.

A large number of smallholder farmers also get to bene�it from lower rice prices because they are also net consumers of the staple, Lambino said.

“We will have dedicated resources for the modernization and increased productivity of rice farming in the country,” Lambino said during the forum. “Under the previous non-tarif�ied regime, the difference between the farmgate price and retail price—the farmgate price is less than P20 per kilo, and retail is more than P40. The difference in the price does not go to the farmer, but to other players in the rice industry.”

Under the new tarri�ied setup, the taxes collected from private traders importing rice would be 100-percent earmarked for the programs under the RCEF meant to bene�it rice farmers, Lambino said.

World Bank support helps PH reach upper-middle income status

he World Bank’s generous support for the Philippines’ sustainable development programs is a key factor in helping the country secure its status as an upper middle-income economy in 2019, three years ahead of its targeted schedule, Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III has said.

Dominguez said he looks forward to “new forms of cooperation” with the World Bank as it institutes reforms to respond to the changing needs of its diverse membership, armed with a stronger �inancial capacity as a result of its recent general and selective capital increase, which the Philippines had strongly endorsed and supported.

Dominguez thanked the World Bank for its assistance over the last six decades to the Philippines’ development efforts in, among others, human capital development, disaster risk management, education, transport, environment and energy.

He further cited World Bank’s support for the Philippines’ peace and development efforts in Mindan-

ao’s con�lict-ridden areas, which “has been a major component of the Bank’s program in the country.”

“For many decades, the World Bank helped many emerging economies achieve sustainable development. This year, as the Bank celebrates its 75th year, we are proud to announce that the Philippines will achieve the status of an ‘upper middle-income’ nation ahead of schedule. The Bank shares much credit for this achievement,” said Dominguez during the Philippine Day Forum held recently at the Grand Hyatt Hotel here.

The event was organized by the World Bank with support from Citi, Standard Chartered Bank and UBS, to share with leaders of the American business community the Philippines’ growth story and the progress that the country has achieved over the recent years of implementing reforms to power its economy.

EDITORIAL Terror does not choose The terrorists have struck again and this time, they left so many lives lost on their trail of merciless acts. At last count, 207 were reported dead. Fortunately no Filipino was among those who perished in one of the most brutal attacks by terrorists of late.

It came after the church bombing in Jolo in January and the mosque attacks in Christchurch in March. It came during Easter Sunday when Catholics celebrate the feast of the risen Christ. It came at a time when calls for cooperation in the Asean region against terrorism �inancing were voiced out.

But terror knows no time. It knows no religion, nationality, age or gender. Injustice and hate can manifest themselves anytime, anywhere, in�licting pain and taking lives of anyone.

Sadness and hope envelope the world in the aftermath of this tragedy. The message of Easter as a message of hope cannot be lost despite the terror attacks. The devastating blasts that tore through multiple sites in and near Colombo and a church in Batticaloa in

eastern Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday could hardly be crueller. Three Catholic churches were struck on the most signi�icant day in the Christian calendar. More than 200 people were killed and hundreds more wounded. But there remains a ray of hope.

The outpouring message of the rest of the world who came to the comfort of a grieving country with troubled history is both an indication of choice and commitment. A choice to stop terrorism from gripping nations helplessly and a commitment to unite and do concrete solutions to this continuous threat.

This is not an ordinary work of terror. This was calculated, wellplanned and well-executed. Whoever was responsible was destined to claim the lives of people of all faiths, whether young or old, whether Sri Lankans or foreigners. Terror does not choose.

Sri Lanka’s pain is felt in all corners of the world. To even simply condemn to enormity this atrocious acts is not enough. But yes, even in the harshest of times, hope can and must endure.

DESPERATE BLACK PROPAGANDA The road to perdition for the gasping Liberal Party is as slippery as the fate of its senatorial candidates in the coming mid-term elections this May 13. Its political banner “Otso Deretso” had disentegrated. By itself the party is like a powder keg out to implode. It is a mixture of leftists and rightists that offer no viable alternative but to restore the inept and corrupt regime of the two chapters of Aquino government. Just about the only credentials that the Aquino regimes are famous for is their loyalty and subservience to the United States of America. The incumbent Pres.

Rodrigo R. Duterte,on the other hand, is a departure from his predecessor in that he restored the dignity of the Filipinos and de�ined what sovereignty is for the Philippines. He might have a dirty mouth but he has a heart of a true patriot.

Of late, the concerted efforts of the anti-Duterte forces have taken a desperate move aimed at demonizing the �irst family on the heels of the recent poll surveys showing at least 10 of Hugpong Ng Pagbabago and PDP-Laban slate making it to the magic 12. This collosal setback of the LP or “dilawan” faction becomes even more humiliating when both Pulse Asia and the Social Weather Stations registered unprecedented Trust and Approval Ratings for President Duterte. These eloquently translate to the people’s trust for Duterte-led senatorial ticket.

The attempt of Human Rights Watch and some US congressmen to demonize and assail President Duterte is not gaining any mileage. They have exhausted whatever they can exploit from the issues of violent campaign against illegal drug syndicates, extra-judicial killings, repression of freedom of the press to the detention of Sen. Leila De Lima. Failing to generate public approval on these overused issues their wrecking crew have perceptively revved up their propaganda machineries to conjure other issues to stave off the free fall of the opposition candidates. But none of these makes a negative impact on the preference for the administration senatorial bets. By their vote of con�idence, the huge majority of Filipinos is practically giving Duterte a blanket authority to pursue without let-up his campaign against drug syndicates and corruption.

The black propaganda levelled against Duterte by the unholy alliance of the Liberal Party, the CPP/NPA-NDF, the hypocritical religious terrorists and the foreign-�inanced media organizations have become more vicious as the May 13 polls come close. The signatures of destabilizing forces have become obviously apparent. The US-based National Endowment for Democracy has generously funded, directly and indirectly, local media organizations. NED is no different from Omidyar Network

which funded the ouster move of a Ukraine President who was sympathetic to Russia.

Omidyar is the same out�it that “invested” a huge sum of money in Maria Ressa’s Rappler. It coughed up support funds for Vera Files which in turn allocates funds for the Philippine Council for Investigative Journalism. If that is not enough there are traitors based in the US of A that had long denounced not only their Filipino citizenship but the Philippines as well.

The ghost character “Bikoy” is among the inventions of the group to tarnish the image of President Duterte and his family. It maligned even Veronica, the very young daughter of the President who is barely in her teens, in their outrageous plot to denigrate the family of the President.

PCIJ threw away their much ballyhooed virtue of being investigative by reporting that Duterte has accumulated so much wealth in his incumbency as President. Like Rappler’s EJK numbers, PCIJ subscribed to the statistics culled from the perjured witnesses of Senators De Lima and Antonio Trillanes.

They also believed hook line and sinker and propagated the fairy tale surrounding the mythical Davao Death Squads.

Three decades had elapsed since De Lima, as chairperson of the Human Rights Commission, conducted a probe on alleged extra-judicial killings in Davao City and up to the time

she became Justice Secretary and now Senator, she has not yet produced a single piece of evidence of the more than 2,000 victims which her witnesses claimed they personally buried in an abandoned quarry in Davao.

And now they came up with a rehashed story of the so-called “wealth” of President Duterte and his children. The parents of the President are known in Davao. His father, a lawyer, was the last elected governor of undivided Davao province. They have modest businesses and properties yet lived a frugal lifestyle. Gov. Vicente Duterte to date is best remembered for his unblemished record as a politician.

They were not rich if you reckon with the present crop of politicians but were neither poor.

When the venerable governor died, his wife Soledad, continued with the family’s discipline keeping the good name and virtues that the late governor had imparted. Then Mayor Duterte and wife Elizabeth raised and nurtured their children in the same mold of discipline and frugal lifestyle.

When Nanay Soleng passed away, she left the modest fortune that she and the late Governor had saved for their children. By this time, the marriage of Duterte to Elizabeth was annulled. The mayor took a new partner later, Honeylet Avancena, a registered nurse who worked as supervisor for a long time in a US hos-

pital. A woman with a knack for business, Honeylet invested her savings on fast food chains.

She never meddles in Duterte’s politics and shies away from the public. The few times she appeared in public was when Veronica, nicknamed “Kitty” was born to the couple.

PCIJ made an issue of President Duterte’s “wealth” and the rest of the critical media feasted on it as if it is the only remaining carcass they can �ind in the desert. It is to their misfortune that the President lives a legendary frugal lifestyle.

True that when he started off with his political career, he declared a P10-million worth of assets and liabilities. If 30 years later this increased to P28-million only a person pregnant with plot to malign another can conjure a fast math and tell the world that the increment is ill-gotten. For an institution that relies mainly on doleouts from funding agencies, this indeed can be an unexplainable mystery. And Duterte is correct that these paid propagandists are nothing but that. PCIJ, RAPPLER and Vera Files should have consulted even a student in investment and asset management for an explanation why P10 today can grow beyond P28 in 20 years. This can easily be achieved even without taking into consideration the salaries, wages and other incomes which Duterte’s family derived from legitimate business. But attack dogs can never comprehend this.

INFLAMING SCS TENSIONS IS NEVER GOOD The south china sea situation is one that surely occupies the national security discussions of many ASEAN member states for a number of years.

In the aftermath of the International Tribunal decision af�irming our countrys sovereign rights over the disputed seas in June 2016, we recall how any discussion on the matter was effectively muted during multilateral discussions among ASEAN member states.

ASEAN member states are careful not to risk lending too much focus on

their disputed waters and islands, as this may be a prelude to actual con�lict or a diminution of their trade ties with the worlds second largest economy, without which theirnown economies would not have grown as they have.

They know that as the biggest trading partner, they have much to lose in the event of con�lict.

In the Philippines we have seen how our economy was affected by trade sanctions and tourist bans when we �irst protested in 2012. How many banana growers lost money shipping to China

then? Remember? I am sure other ASEAN states have taken note of this.

Notice how Indonesia prefers to focus on �ishing rather than military incursions. Realize how, despite frequent verbal tussles, Vietnam still accepted 3 million Chinese tourists and Malaysia renegotiated Chinese loanswithout rejecting them.

All despite the presence of arti�icial islands in waters they also claim.

ASEAN member states are not foolish to risk even a “cold war” against China. This is because any attempt to build an alli-

ance against China may not only increase tensions and clip trade, but lead to a watering down of their own individual claims in the disputed waters which are claims against each other.

Remember that each claimant state has positions that oppose, not af�irm our own interests.

Provoking con�lict may lead to a free for all situation where each country will occupy islands and islets, further complicating the situation.

Sources within the ASEAN diplomatic community are watching the

Philippines for a number of reasons.

This is because being the only mutual defense treaty partner in southeast asia, any con�lict will draw the United States to war with China- an outcome all ASEAN states, and even Japan will not want.

Should we stop fanning the �lames of con�lict and xenophobia? Yes. it is in everyone’s interest that we create a situation where a shared harmony among neighbors is achieved.

How that can be done is for another column.

If you don’t know what “BJ” stands for, then you are not doing your homework lately. It is simply the acronym for buko juice which will take the centerstage and hog the limelight during the Palarong Pambansa that will be held in Davao City during the last week of this month.

“Thousands are expected to join hundreds of young athletes from all over the country who will compete in the annual sports festival which produced sports greats like Lydia de Vega and Elma Muros,” wrote Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol in his social media account.

According to Piñol, this year’s national sports competition will also feature indigenous sports which coincides with the introduction of an indigenous product, buko, as the of�icial energy drink.

“The Department of Agriculture will support the efforts of the coconut farmers to introduce coconut water as the of�icial energy drink by extending a loan fund to be used in buying fresh young coconuts from farmers,” Piñol said.

The promotion is part of the program which the agriculture department and the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) have introduced “to provide additional income to coconut farmers all over the country.”

“With low price of coconut oil in the world market and an oversupply of copra locally, farmers have complained of very little income from their coconuts,” Piñol said, adding that his department has initiated the opening of the Eastern European market for coconut products.

He said that as a way of promoting the consumption

of buko locally to help ease the oversupply, he has directed all DA of�ices to serve coconut water during its meetings and gatherings. In addition, the PCA regional of�ices, including the central of�ice, have established outlets for buko sale.

In the United States, one health magazine hails coco water as “America’s healthiest beverage” for providing enhanced hydration, essential nutrition and all �ive essential electrolytes (calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorous and sodium).

Consider this: When compared with a popular sports drink per 100 milligrams, buko juice has more potassium (294 milligrams versus 11.7 milligrams), less sodium (25 milligrams versus 41 milligrams), more chloride (118 milligrams versus 39 milligrams), more magnesium (10 milligrams versus 7 milligrams), and less sugars (�ive milligrams versus six milligrams).

It must be recalled that during the Paci�ic War of 1941-45, both sides in the con�lict regularly used coconut water – siphoned directly from the nut – to give emergency plasma transfusions to wounded soldiers.

“Medically, the buko juice is one of the purest sources of energy in the world,” says Dr. Jose P. Naval, an occupational physician based in Davao. “It is considered to be sterile because of its sealed enclosure in the nut shell.”

The health bene�its of coco water had been hailed as early as 1996. A news report carried by Today said: “More and more studies on the coconut show that it has great nutritional and medicinal value, and can have a tremendous

impact on the health and lives of people.”

The report cited the “years of scienti�ic research

by Dr. Eufemio Macalalag, Jr., chief of the Urology Department of the Chinese General Hospital.” It said the study has proven that “coconut water can help man stay healthy.”

The physician employed what he called as direct bukolysis. The report explained: “For the past year, Dr. Macalalag has been using coconut water from 6- to 10-month-old nuts in dissolving kidney stones in his patients by directly infusing the water into the kidneys.

In addition, the doctor also did extensive research on bukolysis and discovered oral bukolysis using fresh buko water, buko nectar concentrate, or buko nectar concentrate powder in dissolving all kinds of kidney stones.

Dr. Macalalag, the report said, recommends the drinking of buko water from three fresh nuts daily to prevent renal disorders.

Meanwhile, American nutritionist Jonny Bowden, author of The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth, considers coco water to be a “perfectly good option” for people who want to stay hydrated. “It’s high in heart-healthy potassium, with most brands providing about 700 milligrams in an 11-ounce serving – that’s lots more than you get in a banana,” he wrote. “It also has only about 60 calories per 11-ounce serving.”

Diabetics can also bene�it from drinking coconut water.

In its website, the PCA gives this information: “Potassium content of water is remarkably high at all nut ages. Together with sodium and phos-

phorus, potassium content also tends to increase with the ages of the coconut to peak at nine months. This characteristic of coconut water makes it a very good drinking water for diabetics. Diabetics waking from a coma recover quickly after drinking coconut water.”

There’s more to coco water than all these.

The Laguna-based Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) says: “The coconut water has lots of health nutrients and uses. It is among the purest of all waters. It has no cholesterol but contains more electrolytes than any fruit or vegetable juice or sports drink currently available in the market. It contains trace amounts of copper, phosphorus, and sulfur which help correct electrolyte imbalances.

“Coconut water contains enough vitamin C to meet the daily requirements of the body. Further, it keeps the body cool thus, helps maintains the human body’s natural �luid levels while carrying vital nutrients and oxygen to cells. It improves calcium and magnesium absorption which supports the development of strong bones and teeth. It also improves insulin secretion and utilization of blood glucose.”

Now, those are good reasons enough to drink buko juice. “If only half of 108-million population (in the Philippines) would drink coconut water once a week,” Piñol surmised, “the coconut industry could sell at least 2.6 billion young coconuts every year.”

Currently, the country’s nut production is posted at 15 billion, according to Piñol.

By HENRYLITO D. TACIO WHEN Filipinos visit Orlando in Florida, the theme park that they really don’t miss to visit is the famed Disney World.

“You have never been to Orlando if you have not visited Disney World,” my sister, Marilou T. Eplite, told me a week after I arrived at her place in Deltona. It takes about one-hour to travel to Orlando by car.

If Disney World is so popular, then there’s nothing for me to write about. Besides, there’s more to Orlando than just Disney World, I found this out few weeks later when we went there a couple of times.

On the second time, as we went home, I noticed a “volcano” amid the city, spewing some smokes.

“What is that?” I inquired. “That is Universal’s Volcano Bay,” my brother-in-law, David, replied.

“We will be going to that place, Manoy, one of these days,” my sister added.

When we arrived, I immediately did some research. It is actually a park, theme around a 200-foottall artificial volcano “Krakatau,” it’s main representative as it is displayed on the logo.

Volcano Bay was opened to the public last year, on May 25. The source said: “The volcano houses three drop capsule slides, Ko’okiri Body Plunge, the tallest body slide in America ranging at 125 feet tall, and also the first to travel through a pool full of guests.

Krakatau also holds the Kala & Tai Nui Serpentine Body Slides which travel throughout the midst of the volcano winding around the Krakatau Aqua Coaster.”

That’s very fascinating. But

what makes it more interesting is that the park, according to the video that was shown in the bus we were riding going to the place, utilizes the TapuTapu experience.

TapuTapu is a wristband wearable distributed at the entrance at the park; it can be used to hold your place in line instead of standing in long queues for attractions.

In addition, it comes with other features including TapTuPay, which links a credit card through the Universal Orlando app to the wearable, thus allowing you to pay throughout the park for merchandise, food, and drinks.

The wristbands can also be used to interact with environmental features, set off water springs, or illuminate lights.

It was in this place that I tried the TeAwa The Fearless River; it is actually a raft ride simulating white-water rafting.

The task proved to be grueling, but after hours of trying, the housemates never gave up.

Meanwhile, the first eight teen housemates made a great first impression as they succeeded on their first weekly task. They were judged by the top three “World of Dance Philippines” finalists as they performed three dance routines that displayed their talent on dancing.

After winning both games in Los Angeles, the Warriors own a 3-1 series lead heading to Game 5 on Wednesday night in Oakland, Calif.

Klay Thompson scored 27 of his 32 points in the �irst half for the Warriors. Stephen Curry went 3-for14, including 1-for-9 from 3-point range, �inishing with 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored a season-high 25 points for the Clippers.

avao City will be sending a 70-man contingent to the revived Arafura Games.

A lean and mean team will represent the Philippines in the multi-nation sports competition set April 26 to May 4 in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia.

Mark Edward Velasco, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) national training director and the delegation’s Deputy Chef de Mission, said the team is composed of 120 athletes and coaches who will participate in 10 of 17

calendared sports.

“PSC Chairman William Ramirez’s instruction was to send a strong team, to select the best among our players in the developmental level,” Velasco said.

Velasco said the “rigorous selection process” was part of PSC’s ‘sports pyramid’ where the best athletes from grassroots level will be given the opportunities to test their mettle against their global counterparts.

“Although the Arafura Games is a friendly competition, the level is

high given the number and skills of the competitors they will be facing.

It is a good exposure,” Velasco said.

He said more than 97 percent of the Philippine team members hail from Mindanao with Davao City sending around 70 athletes.

Other members come from Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro, Davao del Norte, General Santos and Palawan.

The team is composed of the winners of the Philippine National Games, Batang Pinoy and Palarong Pambansa.

Velasco said the team is set to leave on April 24 on board a Philippine Airlines chartered �light.

He said more than 15,000 athletes and coaches will join the Arafura Games which will be held after eight years of absence due to a global health scare in 2011.

ohn Riel Casimero took the vacant World Boxing Organization interim bantamweight title after knocking out Ricardo Espinoza of Mexico at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, USA on Sunday (Philippine Time).

In a bout that was ordered by the WBO to be an interim title �ight due to Zolani Tete's inactivity, Casimero stunned Espinoza, Tete's supposed mandatory challenger, with a 12th round technical knockout to win the interim belt.

With the �ight being close after Round 11

despite his knockdown in Round 6, Casimero turned on the jets at the start of Round 12, rocking Espinoza with back-to-back left power punches that sent him down.

Despite Espinoza standing up, Casimero was unstoppable, once again wobbling his opponent, and the referee stopped the contest 44 seconds into the said round.

Casimero, who hailed from Ormoc City, is now 27-4 with 18 knockouts, while Espinoza dropped to 23-3, losing for the �irst time via a stoppage.

FOR THE LOVE OF COACHES A

manager is a title. Like CEO or president. It does not guarantee success.

But a coach is different. In my book, I don’t see it as a title. Coach is an action, not a title. And yes, actions will result in successes.

Many of you may disagree with me but that is how I put coaching as a career in a different mindset. Reason why I have high respect for coaches. I once coached for my school’s high school basketball team in a unit meet when I was a senior and I know how damn tough getting 12 players to play together as one.

I appreciated coaching in a different level when Butch Ramirez, yes the PSC chairman himself Butch Ramirez, coached the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) team in a KBP-sponsored basketball tournament some years back. To be exact, at a time when Shaquille O’Neal was a young NBA center. I had for teammates, a spritely Moses Billacura, banger Lito delos Reyes and a young Jon Develos. Add to that the late Gene Boyd Lumawag who was like a brother to me. No surprise that when he gets into trouble at the court, I was at his

back.

Coach Butch weaved his magic upon an oddly-mixed team of contrasting characters and skills-not to mention shape and �itness.

But Butch’s magic did work.

He showed us what coaching means.

I am talking about coaching at this time because it so happens the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas (SBP) in Region 11 or Davao Region will be bringing to town national team coach Jong Uichico for the Coaching Clinic Series of the SBP on April 27. This is a two-day camp which

is the second tier from the one held last year as part of SBP11’s coaches development program.

SBP 11 is of course headed by my good friend and kumpare Glenn “G1” Escandor, who happens to be President Rodrigo Duterte’s sports adviser. Pare G1’s go-toguy is coach Ronel Leuterio who is overseeing the program.

It’s not everyday that you get the opportunity to upgrade your coaching skills in basketball so when you do, it’s a must-not-miss opportunity.

To make things even comfortable for local coaches, G1 decided

to subsidize half of the participation fee to encourage more coaches to take part. God bless his heart, G1 is a leader of a different DNA. With that, aspiring coaches as well as veterans polishing their knowledge should take advantage of this upgrade for P500 only.

No need to travel to Manila and spend a fortune to get an upgrade.

The SBP 11 has brought the camp here. That’s a huge bonus for everyone.

If you coaches out there wish to take a few steps close to success, this is it.
