To investigate the cause of their death, Bali Environment Agency (BLH), Bali Fishery Services, Bali House and a number of experts came down to Lake Batur. Laboratory Head of Bali Environment Agency, Gede Suarjana, told reporters. Scientifically, said Suarjana, pollution causing the death of fish on Lake Batur could not have been ascertained as no laboratory tests were made related to the pollution. “We have assigned a team of Bali Environment Agency, Bali House, Bangli Fishery Services as well as several experts to directly monitor the field conditions. Even, Bangli Regency has deployed a Task Force to evacuate the dead fish ashore,” he said. Even though there was no laboratory test, Suarjana said that similar cases once occurred three years ago but the number of dead fish was not as much as in the current incident. Temporary monitoring at location indicated the water color changed to whitish. Prior to the change, an earthquake occurred on Monday (Jun 20) morning. If water discoloration was caused by volcanic eruptions at the bottom of the lake, so it could nearly be ascertained that lack of oxygen would engulf fish and other animals or plants on the lake.
Japanese dancers spread enchantment AFICIONADOS of arts in Bali are obliged to reap valuable lessons from the seriousness of foreign artists in learning Balinese arts. Japanese artist, Ami Hasegawa, and friends who joined in the Basundhari Dance Studio, Japan, for example, were highly skilled in performing Balinese dance with comparable quality to the original Balinese dancers. Result of her seriousness reaped an amazement of BAF visitors when making performance in Wantilan Hall of Bali Art Center, Monday (Jun 20). At that night, Ami Hasegawa along with 11 other Japanese dancers was dancing accompa-
nied by the gong gede gamelan music played by musicians of Cendana Gamelan Studio belonging to famous comedian, I Ketut ‘Cedil’ Suanda. At least, four classical dances were staged in succession starting from Rejang Renteng, Pengaksama, Baris Kekupu and Wiranjaya Dance. Of the four dances, the Wiranjaya Dance composed by I Ketut Merdana in 1957 received the most enthusiastic applause from the audience. The dance depicting the journey of Nakula and Sahadewa to learn archery was presented by Mayumi Inoue and Mariko Inui at the ultimate session. Continued on page 6
