The Ciompi begin their season with their venerable tradition of playing a quartet

by Haydn, the father of that form. His Quartet No. 39 surprisingly ends with a fugue, a throwback to the baroque era, inspiring the Ciompi for the rest of the program. The ensemble continue their transition to the baroque with a string quartet transcription of Bach’s famous Passacaglia and Fugue, before welcoming to the stage soprano Julianne Baird, a celebrated American singer of the baroque repertoire. The New York Times hailed Baird as “one of the most extraordinary voices in the service of early music that her generation has produced,” and marveled at her “singing of supreme expressive beauty.” Baird performs two soaring arias from Bach’s immortal cantatas, and offers a rare chance to hear the operatic works of Venetian master Antonio Vivaldi, best known for his instrumental concertos.

The Ciompi’s second program of the season is an all-Mozart affair, beginning with one of the composer’s “Haydn” quartets.

The ensemble join a frequent collaborator, gifted clarinetist Allan Ware, to perform one of Mozart’s most beloved works for one of the composer’s favorite instruments, the radiant Clarinet Quintet.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung praised Ware’s “sensitive tone and incomparable differentiation of tone colors.” The Ciompi become the “orchestra” for the Piano Concerto No. 14, with Swiss pianist Olivier Cavé as soloist. Cavé brings a "full-blooded, rich sound" (The New York Times) to this lesser-known concerto, a soulful, sunny masterpiece. These three works, heard in tandem, reveal Mozart’s depth and grace.

The third concert of the season finds the Ciompi Quartet exploring works inspired by folk music. They play the bright, childlike melodies of Britten’s Three Divertimenti, the young composer’s sketch for a quartet that never materialized. They then turn to two contemporary pieces: Pulitzer Prize-winner and Greenville, NC native Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte, a Haydn-inspired minuet; and the world premiere of a newly-commissioned piece

by Duke Ph.D. graduate and University of South Carolina professor David Kirkland Garner, influenced by roots music and played by Celtic fiddler Jamie Laval.

Dirty Linen Magazine raved that Laval’s “superb technique, fluid dexterity, subtle bowing, and purity of tone are unparallelled.” The program culminates in Dvořák’s well-known “Slavonic” quartet, which takes its essence from traditional melodies of the composer’s homeland.

The Ciompi finish their season with a panoramic view of Beethoven’s seminal string quartets. They start where the composer started, with his String Quartet No. 3, the first he composed.

Jumping nearly thirty years to the pinnacle of Beethoven’s quartet writing, they take on his complex and wildly experimental Quartet in C-sharp Minor.

Robert Schumann marveled that this monumental work stands "on the extreme boundary of all that has hitherto been attained by human art and imagination." British composer and scholar Gerard McBurney offers expert commentary & context on the Beethoven String Quartets. The Chicago Tribune called McBurney “the sort of musical tour guide we haven’t heard much of in this country since Leonard Bernstein.”

THE CIOMPI QUARTET O O O

The Ciompi Quartet was founded at Duke University in 1965 by the renowned Italian violinist Giorgio Ciompi.

The Quartet’s recitals and recordings display their facility with masterpieces of the quartet repertoire from Haydn to Brahms, as well as their unflagging dedication to contemporary music. Thanks to the Ciompi’s robust commissioning program, their concerts often feature world premiere compositions by living composers.

Praised for their “unrelenting rhythmic accuracy and pitch-perfect intonation” (Classical Voice of North Carolina), the Ciompi perform regularly at Duke’s Baldwin Auditorium, and have made a slate of fine recordings, the most recent on the Naxos label in 2015 featuring the music of Chiayu Hsu.

The members of the Ciompi are on the music faculty at Duke and play a leading role in the University’s cultural life, in addition to serving as musical ambassadors for the University on concert tours throughout the world.

Recent tours have ranged from New England to Washington State, and from Germany to China, in addition to last season’s appearance at the Tenri Cultural Institute in New York City unveiling three of their most recent commisioned works. The members of the Ciompi Quartet are longtime Durham residents, maintain full studios of Duke student musicians, and have been playing together in their current iteration for nearly two decades. Their roots in the Duke and Durham communities give the Ciompi the freedom to perform some of the less frequently played works of the chamber music repertoire, such as the Vivaldi arias featured in the 2016/17 season. The Ciompi Quartet — Eric Pritchard and Hsiao-mei Ku, violins; Fred Raimi, cello; and Jonathan Bagg, viola — celebrated their 50th Anniversary Sesaon in 2015/16.

Guests for the 50th Anniversary Season in 2015/16 included vocalist Nnenna Freelon; soprano Tony Arnold; shakuhachi player James Nyoraku Schlefer, shamisen player Yoko Kimura, and koto player Yumi Kurosawa of Kyo-Shin-An Arts; and bassist Edgar Meyer. This season's distinguished guests include Julianne Baird, Olivier Cavé, Allan Ware, Jamie Laval, and Gerard McBurney.

In recent years, the Ciompi have mounted world premieres of new works by illustrious composers such as Scott Lindroth, Paul Schoenfield, Melinda Wagner, Robert Ward, Donald Wheelock, Carl Schimell, Stephen Jaffe, and David Kirkland Garner.

Baldwin Auditorium is located on Duke University’s East Campus at the intersection of Onslow Street and West Markham Avenue.

The 2016/17 Ciompi Quartet season is available at a subscription fee of $80 for all four concerts starting on June 21. Single tickets will be available to the general public beginning July 12 by calling 919-684-4444 or visiting dukeperformances.org. Note: Processing fees are $1.50 per single ticket, and $5 per subscription. There is a 7.5% North Carolina sales tax that is included in the price of your subscription. All concerts are general admission.

Located in the lobby of the hall, the Baldwin Box Office will serve patrons on the evening of the concert and open one hour before show time to distribute will call and to sell any available tickets for the performance.
