The construction industry had 375,000 job openings in July, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey.

The Arbor Day Foundation announced a partnership with ConExpo-Con/AGG and the International Fluid Power Exposition (IFPE), the largest construction trade show in North America.

Crews Make Emergency Fixes to I-10 Washout in California

DESERT CENTER, Calif. (AP) Highway workers have opened a second lane for travel on the main route from Los Angeles east to Phoenix after repairing damage caused by monsoonal flooding during the last week of August.

The second lane was restored on Interstate 10 near Desert Center, the California Department of Transportation announced on social media.

On Aug. 24, monsoonal thunderstorms unleashed flooding that damaged eastbound lanes that were serving as a detour past an ongoing construction site.

Eastbound traffic was completely blocked until Caltrans was able to open one lane the next morning, but warned of heavy delays.

HCEA Announces Its Antique Equipment 2022 Show Dates The Historical Construction Equipment Association (HCEA) is holding its 36th Annual International Convention and Old Equipment Exposition. The show will be held at the HCEA’s National Construction Equipment Museum, 16623 Liberty Hi Road, Bowling Green, Ohio, from Sept. 23 through Sept. 25, 2022, and is open to the public.

The show features live demonstrations of antique construction machinery powered by horses or mules, steam, electricity, gas and diesel. Equipment and vehicles built or powered by International Harvester are being featured, along with the National Construction Equipment Museum’s unique collection of more than 180 machines. Many of the machines being shown were built in Ohio communities, including Marion, Galion, Lorain, Euclid, Cleveland and Columbus.

ABC: Job Openings Increase By 22,000 The construction industry had 375,000 job openings in July, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey.

JOLTS defines a job opening as any unfilled position for which an employer is actively recruiting. Industry job openings increased by 22,000 last month and are up 38,000 from the same time last year.

Construction workers quit their jobs at a faster rate than they were laid off or discharged for the 17th consecutive month in July.

“Though we may have collectively experienced peak inflation, it is poised to remain unusually elevated for months to come,” said ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu.

“Many factors will keep prices high, including energy crises in Europe and China as well as a dearth of available skilled workers. Today’s JOLTS release is receiving considerable attention because many hoped that job openings would decrease for the second consecutive month in July.

“That did not come to pass,” said Basu. “Economywide job openings bounced back in July and remain more than 60 percent above pre-pandemic levels. According to ABC’s Construction Confidence Index, the share of contractors who expect to increase their staffing levels over the next half year remains elevated but has declined in recent months. As long as the supply of labor remains inadequate to meet the demand for workers, the industry will continue to experience upward wage pressures.”

Dakota AG Innovations was invited by Genie to introduce Dakota AG’s Power of Foam at Genie’s mid-year sales meeting July 19 to 21, 2022, at Genie’s North Bend, Wash., location.

The afternoon of July 19 was spent introducing and training Genie’s regional parts managers (RPMs) on the Power of Foam and Dakota Shine product lines.

About Power of Foam The Power of Foam is a foam cleaning system that utilizes Dakota AG’s Dakota Wash HD foaming cleaner and degreaser. It is user friendly, biodegradable and will not interfere with wastewater recycling systems, according to the company.

The Power of Foam consists of a wall-mounted and air-operated

foamer that sits above a refillable 55-gal. drum of Dakota Wash HD. The package includes a 70-ft. hose with a wand that will apply a layer of foam. Once applied, the foam penetrates, encapsulates and releases accumulated grease, grime and oil buildup. Let the foam sit and work for a couple minutes then rinse.

Sandvik Chooses Cat HVO Engines to Reduce CO2 Emissions

The Cat C-Series engines supplied to Sandvik Mobile Crushers and Screeners to power its mining and construction equipment can run on renewable and alternative fuels including hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) certified to EN15940 or ASTM D975.

Caterpillar’s long-standing commitment to sustainability and support for customers during the energy transition to a lower-carbon future means its industrial engines have for many years been capable of running on a range of renewable and alternative fuels*.

The Cat C-Series engines supplied to Sandvik Mobile Crushers and Screeners to power its mining and construction equipment can run on renewable and alternative fuels including hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) certified to EN15940 or ASTM D975.

Sandvik has successfully completed testing on its range of machines to confirm that they can operate with HVO without modifications to either the engines or the fuel tanks. This helps Sandvik and its customers to reduce the net carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by

up to 90 percent compared with conventional diesel, according to the company.

Collaboration With Cat Dealer Finning UK, Ireland Sandvik is a commercial and industrial equipment supplier, providing leading solutions for the mining, quarrying and construction industries. The company supplies large volumes of mobile crushing and screening equipment that can contribute to CO2 emissions when using traditional diesel fuel.

To make the shift towards a more sustainable business, Sandvik Mobiles decided to invest in HVO as a renewable fuel and turned to Cat dealer Finning UK and Ireland to supply compatible engines.

HVO is a form of renewable synthetic diesel, produced from

certified waste fats and oils through hydro-processing. Its performance is similar to regular diesel, but it reduces the carbon footprint associated with operating the engine and can lower nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) under certain conditions.

Its chemical similarity to diesel means that the machine’s power output and uptime are not compromised when introducing HVO as an alternative, and it also can be blended with diesel, the manufacturer said.

Researchers Look for Ways to Mitigate Material Corrosion

Climate change is being blamed for accelerated infrastructure corrosion. Increases in temperature and humidity are weakening construction materials and eating away at America’s roads and bridges.

The transportation design and construction industry hopes with President Biden’s major infrastructure bill their structural preservation efforts will gain traction.

The reinforced concrete and steel used not only in today’s roads and bridges but in other transportation venues including airport runways, railways, sewers and tunnels, are threatened by weather and environment.

Research has found that in the right environment steel can retain its strength for 100 years. But exposed to salt and wind, it begins to rust and weaken.

Coatings that help slow down the effects of water and oxygen can only do so much.

Carbonation causes concrete failure when carbon in the air mixes with compounds used in cement.

Though the resulting carbonates improve the strength and durability of the concrete, they also allow chloride to corrode the reinforcing steel inside.

Not Taking It Lying Down At the Corrosion Research Laboratory at the University of Texas at San Antonio, work aimed at making building products safer is proving successful.

Founded in 2016, the Corrosion Lab is home to student researchers, collaborators and visiting scientists, all using the space “to integrate experimental approaches with accelerated degradation through harsh environments” including salt, temperature and humidity.

They’re also utilizing computational modeling to characterize materials to better understand corrosion and help mitigate its effects.

“I hope our ongoing work generating new knowledge and techniques will positively impact safety across the board,” said Brendy Rincon Troconis, assistant professor and co-principal investigator.

“A report from aircraft teardowns showed that nearly 80 percent of cracks on military aircrafts have

been found in close proximity to corrosion sites.”

Considering that aircrafts are also exposed to mechanical stress, it’s important to best understand how they affect corrosion.

This can be done through the evaluation of corrosion and attack on structural alloys in relevant conditions, said Troconis.

“All this information can feed structural life management tools and lead to more efficient maintenance schedules.”

An expert in corrosion in reinforced concrete, Troconis is working with Texas-based Twin Hawk on a commercial grade coating that minimizes corrosion and improves the durability of the reinforced concrete over time.

“We have previously demonstrated the efficiency of Twin Hawk’s product and are now bringing the chemical production onto campus to optimize the surface preparation and coating process parameters,” she said.

The team also is expanding their testing to include accelerated corrosion chambers and field testing related to reinforced concrete applications.

The research team also is collaborating with Universidad de Costa Rica and Texas A&M University to test an environmentally sustainable corrosion inhibitor.

The goal is to increase the durability of reinforced concrete in a sustainable way while minimizing risks to humans and the broader environment.

“Corrosion is a significant risk to safety in many fields,” Troconis said. “Therefore, I hope our ongoing work generating new knowledge and techniques will positively impact safety across the board.”

Bridging the Future The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is tackling carbon corrosion in bridges with a revolutionary method: Carbon fiber reinforced bridge beams.

The goal is to engineer a 100year bridge, said Paul Ajegba, state transportation director. “The aim is bridges that last a century with minimal maintenance.”

He said the technology is becoming wildly popular well beyond Michigan’s borders.

MDOT reports that research has reached the field stage and projects utilizing it have been deployed.

Today’s bridges are built to withstand both the daily loads of thousands of vehicles and decades of extreme temperature changes.

Prestressing concrete with highstrength materials is one method of strengthening it.

In this method, steel cables inside the concrete are tensioned with a significant force, elongating them.

Before the strengthened concrete carries loads, the strands are released, compressing the concrete.

Subsequent loads on the beam have to overcome this built-in compression to actually stress the beam.

Prestressing also reduces or eliminates cracking from concrete shrinkage; it allows thinner and longer spans, according to MDOT. Steel has been the go-to material for prestressing concrete for highway bridges, but it has drawbacks.

The material is prone to corrosion and deterioration from extreme temperatures, water and deicing chemicals.

Preventing corrosion and repairing damaged areas requires time and money and can limit the lifespan of the structure, said MDOT. But carbon fiber, an innovative alternative to steel, has strands as strong as those of steel, but resistant to corrosion. They also require

less maintenance over time, so they offer longer service life.

“Rusting of steel elements is the leading cause of deterioration in our bridges,” said Matt Chynoweth, chief bridge engineer of MDOT. “Since carbon fiber is non-corrosive, we are eliminating that potential for damage. Using a material that will not corrode is a real game-changer.”

In 2001, LTU, MDOT and the city of Southfield, Mich., deployed the first three-span carbon fiber prestressed concrete bridge in the country.

The Bridge Street bridge was outfitted with sensors so it can be monitored by MDOT until 2025. Since then, more than a dozen bridges have been built throughout the state using carbon fiber components.

Chynoweth said MDOT is deploying the materials strategically, using them on higher-volume routes. On a span of southbound I75, the carbon fiber-infused beams are some of the longest in the state, at 140 ft.

Two bridges are currently being built with carbon fiber reinforced beams as part of MDOT’s massive I-94 modernization project in Detroit. They will use beams with newer 0.7-in. diameter carbon fiber strands, allowing greater initial tensioning than steel, said MDOT. The research coming out of the long partnership between the state transportation agency and LTU hopes to optimize the design process and encourage more widespread use. The team has subjected beams

Coatings experts weighed in on what the infrastructure legislation means for the corrosion sector as a whole and members of the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) specifically.

Dan Adley, retired CEO of engineering consultant KTA-Tator, Pittsburgh, Pa., said every aspect of the infrastructure bill involves construction materials, where the corrosion and coatings sector has a role.

“That role might be in making certain that the material selection and the physical design of these infrastructure projects is done in such a way that the asset is protected for as long as possible,” he said.

“Now, it all needs to be done in a sustainable manner. That has AMPP written all over it, from the front-end design, selection of materials, and the specification for the long-term corrosion protection systems.”

Ask simple questions, said Adley: “How is our state receiving these funds? What’s its vision on how they should be dispersed?

And are we incorporating sound corrosion design, management and oversight provisions in the utilization of these funds to ensure that our investment is sustainable?”

Adam Christopher, AMPP manager of government relations, believes the key for coatings professionals and other contractors is to be a part of the process.

He said the goal is “to make sure policymakers understand the need for actively planning and engaging and making sure that things are protected.”

Christopher said that’s one of the reasons our nation’s infrastructure is in such a state of disrepair today.

“It’s that we haven’t had that traditional focus of making sure the best policies are in place to make sure that assets are properly maintained.”  CEG

SCA Announces Slag Cement University; Expands Awards The Slag Cement Association (SCA), a leading source of knowledge for slag cement and slag blended cements through promotion, education and technology development, has launched Slag Cement University.

Designed for university professors and students, Slag Cement University is a resource and central repository of educational resources on slag cement use in concrete construction. SCA designed the content with the intent of making it easy for educators to incorporate content into existing civil, construction or materials engineering and construction management college degrees.

According to Lori Tiefenthaler, president of the SCA board of directors, this offering will serve to enhance concrete materials instruction with new and exciting slag cement information, projects and tools for use in university courses.

Content was curated and developed by SCA members and staff to provide an overview of the applications, uses and benefits of slag cement use. Content includes: • Technical Information Sheets: SCA’s 29 technical information sheets provide an overview of various applications and topics regarding slag cement use in concrete. These 1–2-page documents are valuable resources for students to review in preparation for exam questions. The references mentioned in these documents can provide further informa-

tion on these topics.

• Presentations and Pre-Recorded Webinars: SCA has webinars and slide decks that provide a well-rounded look at the various applications and things to look for when using slag cement in concrete. Curriculum also includes a Slag Cement 101 slide deck and recorded webinar that will help introduce students to the benefits of this materials use in concrete construction.

• Sustainability Tools: SCA has developed a industrywide environmental product declaration (EPD) and a companion carbon reduction calculator for concrete mixtures that incorporate slag cement. Slag Cement is an important material on the industry’s journey to carbon neutral concrete.

In addition to the curriculum, there is an 80-question exam that provides a testing method for universities to easily measure knowledge related to slag cement.

Research Scholarship In 2020, the SCA expanded its annual awards program to include a research category. Winning projects receive a $1,000 stipend to attend the ceremony. ALL Family of Companies Adds More Than Two Dozen Cranes to Its Fleet Seven Manitowoc lattice boom crawlers highlight a package of more than two-dozen Manitowoc and Grove cranes being added to the fleet of the ALL Family of Companies.

New equipment includes four from the MLC300 line (including MLC300 wide boom and MLC300VPC), and one each Manitowoc 14000, MLC650 and MLC650 rebuild.

MLC300 and MLC650 cranes, offering base capacities of 330 tons and 717 tons, respectively, are known for their ability to go where other lattice boom crawlers cannot, while offering excellent reach and capacity, according to the manufacturer.

The purchase also includes 16 Grove rough-terrain (RT) cranes, with capacities ranging from 30 tons to 165 tons.

Supporting Forests Through Planting The Arbor Day Foundation announced a partnership with ConExpo-Con/AGG and the International Fluid Power Exposition (IFPE), the largest construction trade show in North America.

Together the organizations will work to plant more than 130,000 trees, one for every show registrant, in U.S. forests of greatest need.

For the past 50 years, the Arbor Day Foundation has worked to plant nearly 500 million trees around the world.

Through a vast network of partnerships, the Foundation facilitates projects that empower organizations of all sizes to reach their ESG, CSR and sustainability goals via measurable, impactful work.

“The opportunity to plant trees in conjunction with one of the largest trade shows in North America will have an incredible impact on our reforestation efforts,” said Dan Lambe, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation.

Volvo Trucks Expands Capabilities of I-Shift With Upgrades Volvo Trucks North America has upgraded IShift, an automated manual transmission with digital intelligence. I-Shift now offers a dual power take-off (PTO) that expands the efficiency benefits, transmission functionality and overall cost savings.

The new dual PTO allows I-Shift to incorporate two independently clutched DIN 5462 drives, or one SAE 1410 flange and one DIN 5462 drive, separated by the vehicle’s centerline. By separating the two drives, space is created to allow for the installation of two pumps, simplifying installations and serviceability in the field. The output drives are independently clutched, enabling the vehicle to serve applications either separately or simultaneously.

“Leveraging the new capabilities of a dual PTO in Volvo’s IShift transmission increases the truck’s operational versatility — a customer can haul portland cement one day and aggregate material the next,” said Andy Hanson, product marketing manager at Volvo Trucks North America.

“Volvo’s factory installed PTOs and pumps make the up-fitting process easier, increasing first-time quality and overall reliability for our customers.”

The I-Shift transmission with the dual PTO improves functionality, productivity, fleet utilization and versatility.

Volvo’s transmission PTO T4X-J2X (PTRD-D3), a transmission-mounted clutch dependent power take-off (PTO) with two independently clutched rearward facing DIN connections.

The I-Shift transmission with the dual PTO improves functionality, productivity, fleet utilization and versatility. It also complements the existing single, double and triple PTO suite of offerings.

The PTO’s factory supplied DIN 5462 ports and SAE 1410 flanges are interchangable with the SAE 1310 flange and SAEC and SAE-BB ports, which are all offered through Volvo’s parts distribution network. The factory-installed dual PTO, which carry the same warranty as the I-Shift transmission, also includes dash switches to provide independent left and right side control.

Volvo installed PTOs also can receive factory installed Parker gear and piston pumps.

An expanded benefit of the I-Shift transmission is that it comes in 12, 13 and 14-speed configurations. I-Shift also is available with an overdrive gear and crawler gears of either 17.5:1 or 32:1, providing the ability to cruise at highway speeds while still allowing for excellent efficiency, “startability” and slow-speed maneuverability.

“For more than 15 years, Volvo Trucks’ I-Shift intelligent automated manual transmission has set industry benchmarks for fuel efficiency, vehicle performance, safety and driver comfort. With expanded capabilities thanks to the dual PTO, the Volvo Trucks customer will see more benefits in functionality and cost savings as well,” Hanson said.

Navistar Serves Electrification Needs With eMV Series

Terex Utilities’ first all-electric bucket truck mounted on an eMV Series chassis. The vehicle boasts a 135-mi. driving range and enough battery power to run the bucket for a full day’s work.

Navistar recognizes numerous customer and partner milestones achieved with its International eMV Series batteryelectric medium duty truck.

In full production since August 2021, the eMV Series provides a flexible design that has offered customers a wide variety of specification options to serve various markets.

“Although the medium-duty electric truck segment has focused on box trucks and pick-up and delivery applications, we have been able to go beyond expectations and meet customer needs in other segments,” said Debbie Shust, vice president, Medium Duty Truck.

“Body upfitters are taking on the challenge of seeing what can work on an electric vehicle, and our International eMV Series has become a successful demonstration of chassis integration serving various markets.”

Recent vehicle deliveries over the past several months demonstrate the scope and variety of applications where the eMV Series electric vehicles (EVs) have been deployed.

These include: • On June 6, Terex Utilities, a manufacturer of materials processing machinery and aerial work platforms, announced the industry’s first all-electric bucket truck mounted on an eMV Series chassis. The vehicle boasts a 135-mi. driving range and enough battery power to run the bucket for a full day’s work.

Joe Caywood, Terex Utilities director of marketing and

product support said, “This partnership with Navistar to utilize the International eMV Series allows us to deliver an allelectric bucket truck that supports distribution line service two years ahead of industry projections. This solution will help many of our customers’ electrification and sustainability goals.”

• Navistar has partnered with Morgan Truck Body LLC to release a prototype dry freight cargo van body integrated on an eMV Series chassis. The prototype vehicle offers reduced weight and improved aerodynamics to further the performance of the eMV Series chassis and powertrain.

“The integration between a Morgan van body and a Navistar chassis demonstrates a commitment to providing customers innovative EV solutions, both from an OEM and a truck body builder perspective,” said Tom Diez, senior vice president sales and marketing, Morgan Truck Body.

• Penske Truck Leasing became Navistar’s first U.S. eMV Series customer, purchasing multiple vehicles to continue its commitment to zero-emissions technology. Penske integrated the EVs into its fleet to provide real-world feedback regarding performance. Navistar delivered the vehicles in April 2022.

• Canadian utility provider ENMAX purchased two eMV Series trucks to join its fleet of mobile command centers as part of a pilot program. The program is the first of its kind in the Canadian market, focused on cutting fuel costs and deter-

mining the cost efficiency of EVs. • Altec, a truck equipment manufacturer (TEM) serving the utility and contractor markets, took delivery of an eMV Series chassis upfitted with an Altec TA-60 body. This vehicle will serve the public utility market.

Navistar partners continue to showcase the versatility of the eMV Series in additional applications including a stake body from Knapheide and a stake dump body from TBEI Rugby.

Volvo Presents Keys of Its New Sleeper for Good Cause In acknowledgement of her many industry and community accomplishments, professional truck driver Carmen Anderson was presented with the keys to a new Volvo VNL760 70 in. sleeper specially wrapped to help raise awareness of Special Olympics.

The handover event was held at the headquarters of America’s Service Line (ASL) in Green Bay, Wis., a private truck fleet of 200 heavy-duty trucks and 350 refrigerated trailers for whom Anderson is currently a company driver.

In addition to being behind the wheel professionally for more than 21 years and logging more than 2 million accident-free miles, Anderson was named a Women In Trucking’s Top Women to Watch in Transportation in 2021. In 2019, the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association (WMCA), a non-profit trade association based in Madison representing commercial motor vehicle users, named her Truck Driver of the Year, the first woman to win the award not only in Wisconsin but in any state.

Anderson has long been active not only in supporting Special Olympics, but in promoting highway safety as well via her service as a member of the WMCA Road Team. She also is actively involved in Truckers Against Trafficking, which works to quell

human trafficking across the country, as well as the Trucker Buddy program, dedicated to helping educate and mentor schoolchildren via a pen pal relationship with professional truck drivers.

Kriete Truck Centers, headquartered in Milwaukee, family owned and operated for more than 70 years with ten medium- and heavyduty truck sales and service locations across Wisconsin, partnered with ASL in obtaining the new Volvo truck that Anderson will now be driving.

David Kriete, president and CEO, serves on the board of Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI), which was established in 1972 to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Travis Stuckart, who has been a Special Olympics athlete for two decades and will serve as an athlete-coach in softball for Team Wisconsin at the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games in Orlando, took part in presenting Anderson with her new Volvo truck at today’s event.

Large Rocks Make Contractor Shift to Off-Road Haul Trucks TRUCKS from page 1

paving and striping work was recently completed in August while the remainder of the project checklist is expected to be completed in September.

The $65.5 million Highway 20 Browns Valley Project, awarded to Teichert Construction, covers the area between Marysville Road and Parks Bar Bridge. The work has crews resurfacing, restoring and rehabilitating a 4.5-mi. section of roadway; widening shoulders to standard 8-ft. widths; constructing a new Dry Creek Bridge that meets current design standards and has a multi-use pathway; straightening the curve between Stacy Ann Drive and Sicard Flat Road; and flattening the slope of the roadway between Valhalla Way and Digger Pine Lane.

Project Challenges Like any major construction projects, this one had its challenges.

“The biggest challenge was in how to move the nearly 300,000 cubic yards of excavated material in place alongside a functional highway,” said Danny Warren, Teichert Construction’s project manager.

“Due to the number and size of the rocks, both before and after blasting, it wasn’t feasible to use highway trucks to move the material. We were able to create a plan of attack that allowed us to use non-highway articulated rock trucks to move the majority of the material while maintaining two-way reversing traffic control. We worked on one side of the road at a time, keeping two lanes of either existing, or temporarily constructed highway open for traffic at the end of every shift. We had to work both sides of the highway to construct the widening, sometimes with traffic in the middle. However we were able to mostly work one side at a time.

“There was a significant amount of hard rock that required drilling and blasting prior to excavation,” added Warren. “It was a tight work zone, however we were able to work with the State to rearrange the staging and sequencing of the widening to allow for a little more room and less traffic pattern swaps.”

The project has been a day and night operation.

“Safely handling public traffic through the roadwork was one of our primary concerns and as such, we spent a lot of time reviewing the stage handling plans and revising them with the state to keep the public’s convenience as a priority,” said Warren. “We were able to make some changes to the sequencing of work to minimize the number of lane closures and traffic pattern switches, which we believe made the public’s conveyance through the job both safer and less restrictive while also allowing us to be more produc-

tive. We believe progress was more than satisfactory as we will end up completing the project in less overall working days than the contract allowed for.

“The project team worked very well together and we would categorize the working relationship with Caltrans as world class,” added Warren. “Through numerous partnering workshops, we developed a lot of trust with each other and were able to solve issues at the lowest level possible, only elevating when necessary.”

The resurfacing, restoring and rehabilitating of the roadway was far from easy.

The highway was built via an asphalt surface, with a subbase and base.

“Portions of the existing highway had to be rehabilitated by cold planning portions of the existing roadway surface and overlaying with new asphalt,” said Warren. “A few existing drainage systems were also rehabilitated in place with concrete lining or a cured in place pipe liner.”

The new roadway section is approximately 9-in. thick.

“We are able to put traffic on the new asphalt the same day it is placed,” said Warren.

For the roadwork, Teichert utilized Cat 352 and 390 excavators; Cat D5, D6, D8 and D10 dozers; Cat 623 scrapers; and Volvo

The widening of the shoulders to standard 8-ft. widths was completed at the same time as the roadway rehab and repaving. The straightening of the curve between Stacy Ann Drive and Sicard Flat Road and flattening of the slope of the roadway between Valhalla Way and Digger Pine Lane followed a similar plan of attack and used similar equipment, The old Dry Creek Bridge had two lanes and was 400 ft. in length.

“All traffic was left on the existing bridge while the new one was constructed,” said Warren, “then traffic was moved over so the old bridge could be demolished.”

The new bridge, a cast-in-place box girder structure on cast-in-drilled hole pile foundations, is approximately 400-ft. long and has three lanes.

“We started with the center bent foundations, then the eastern abutment followed by the western abutment,” said Warren. “The superstructure was worked on all at once.

The foundation work was very challenging due to the existing soil conditions and bedrock plus groundwater.”

The bridge took about one year to construct, which included a falsework system.

“It was placed on temporary steel piles,” said Warren,

Various sized cranes, brought in by the subcontractors working on the bridge, were used, with excavators helping with the demotion operation.

The Teichert management team also included Project Engineers Anthony Pietrobono and Sara Weimer, as well as intern Parker Jenks.

“We had a great team and we worked extremely well with the Caltrans project team,” said Warren. “Our crews are amazing and performed tremendously on this project.

They achieved all production goals set for them, while suffering zero lost time incidents.”

The demolition and excavation operations generated 8,000 tons of asphalt and 600,000 tons of earth and rock.

“All of the earth and rock was used for new embankment fills on the project,” said Warren. “The asphalt was taken to Teichert Materials’ Hallwood plant where it is being recycled into new asphalt. Recycling is very important to us. We are always looking for ways to reuse materials on-site wherever possible.”

The amounts of new materials, including concrete, asphalt, steel and pipe are being tabulated.

“Most wear and tear is to tires and other wearing surfaces such as cutting edges and teeth,” said Warren. “Teichert has its own mobile equipment division with in-house mechanics that can generally get things moving for us the same day. We have mobile mechanics that can be called out to jobs for service as necessary. Good maintenance starts with good housekeeping and inspections. Our crews visually check the equipment each shift before operating and report any wear and tear to our mobile equipment division ASAP, so we can catch things before they become catastrophic.
