To submit a claim for refund of VAT, HMRC require lots to be exported from the UK within strict deadlines. For lots on which Import VAT has been charged (marked in the catalogue with a * or Ω) lots must be exported within 30 days of Bonhams’ receipt of payment and within 3 months of the sale date. For all other lots export must take place within 3 months of the sale date.

General Information - Guide for Buyers Premium

Like the vast majority of auctioneers Bonhams charge what is known as a Buyer’s Premium on the Hammer Price of each Lot purchased and is subject to VAT. For Motorcycles (Lots 101-129) the Buyer’s Premium will be 15% on the first £500,000 of the Hammer Price of each Lot, and 12% on the balance thereafter.

For Memorabilia and Spares (Lots 1-14) the Buyer’s Premium is 28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price; 27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,001 up to and including £800,000; 21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,001 up to and including £4,500,000 and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,001.

VAT at the standard rate is payable on the Premium by all Buyers, unless otherwise stated.

Can I view the files that accompany the vehicles?

Yes, we should have all motorcycle files available for inspection during the view.

Are there any warranties offered with the motorcycles?

No. All vehicles are offered on an ‘as seen’ basis. It is wise if possible to bring a professional mechanic with you to fully inspect the motorcycle. It is also advised that the motorcycle is checked before road use. In short, you should satisfy yourself as to the completeness, condition, authenticity and integrity of any lot prior to bidding.

Important V5/V5C Information

Please note that Bonhams retain and update all registration documents, therefore please make sure if you are a successful bidder to notify Bonhams, with the name and address for which the vehicle is to be registered to.

In order to comply with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority’s (DVLA) procedures for updating a change of keeper for a motor vehicle.

If we have not received confirmation of the new keeper’s name and address 14 days from the date of the sale, we will write to you requesting this information.

If, after 28 days from the date of sale, we still have not had contact from you, we will update the new keeper to the name and address shown on your Bonhams client account.

Should your address be from outside the United Kingdom, we will inform the DVLA that the vehicle has been exported.

If you wish the new keeper details to be updated in any other way please make contact with Bonhams as soon as possible.

Please note, that once the V5C has been updated by the DVLA it cannot be reversed.

Motorcycle Frame and Engine Numbers

It is not uncommon in the life of a motorcycle for either the frame or the engine to be changed and as a consequence, the frame and engine numbers to be altered. Buyers must check by personal inspection that frame and engine numbers recorded in the catalogue description or on the registration documents correspond with those on the machine.

Buyers must also satisfy themselves whether the physical number stampings on a machine are consistent with original factory stamps for that lot.

Keys and Documents

Motorcycles are offered with and without keys and documents. It is the buyers responsibility to inspect the lot at the view to satisfy yourself as to the completeness, integrity and presence of keys, spares and documentation. The online catalogue will not necessarily list such said items.

When can I collect my purchases?

Once full payment has been received, purchases can be collected from Wednesday 13 December by appointment only. Lots must be collected by 4pm Thursday 21 December.

Please note the Motorcycle Department is closed between Friday 22 December and Wednesday 3 January 2024.

All purchased lots that remain uncollected after Thursday 4 January 2024 will be charged storage fees. From Friday 5 January 2024: Memorabilia and Spares, Lots 1-14 will be charged a minimum £1 +VAT per lot per day.

Motorcycles, Lots 101-129 will be charged £10 +VAT per lot per day.
