Spring 2021, 3rd year Professor: Peter Olshavsky Location: Kansas City, MO Collaborators: Mason Burress, Ethan Boerner This architectural program proposal for 2055 explores the concept of the edge condition. Edges represent both concrete and immaterial conducts and their subsequent relationships with each other. As things are ever changing, these edges in reference shift, blur, and solidify, making them an ideal focal point when thinking about the future of architectural pedagogy. Richard Sennett’s definition of two forms of edge conditions, are both refered to as “borders” and “boundaries”. Sennett defines boundaries as absolute, and inactive, divisions which he refers to “naturalize difference”. On the other hand, borders are transactional, and active, in balance between the permeability and resistance within its divisions of spaces which cultivate a culture of developing difference. As Sennett defines these terms, borders should take primacy over boundaries. In many instances, The Edge constitutes active areas which function through forms of light, materiality and spatial sequencing.

Sennett explains “The edge is the live condition” in reference to the activity which initiates in these so-called “Borders”. Through the same ideology, resolutions can be made regarding all qualities of the project.

Benson, a historic downtown district located within Omaha, is a community that has experienced growth, as well as decline.

In the past decade, Benson has started to experience a rapid revitalization. In communities experiencing this intensity of revitalization, it becomes essential to allow the community to take part in the regrowth of its urban fabric. To provide a voice to the people, our project embraces the concept of Community Crucible. A place or situation in which concentrated forces interact to cause or influence change or development. To enact that change our proposal identifies three strategies to facilitate development; adapt, sustain, and engage.

By creating building program both interiorly and exteriorly that cater towards giving authorship back to the community it became essential for our building to take shape and encompass the surrounding culture that makes Benson unique.

The local community becomes apart of this process that initiates the regrowth of its fabric and in creating development the people themselves engage, adapt, and sustain the community both in physical preservation and encouraging the advancement of its community.

Liminal space is defined as “the physical spaces between one destination and the next”, in which transition zones drive both program and intangible elements of the site. The Nebraska State Recreation Area needs to provide an opportunity to culminate experiences rather than having a disconnect between them. Through the intentions of blending the concepts of ecological processes, user involvement, preservation, and revenue generation, we plan to capitalize on the potential and motive for spatial sequences. This blend takes place in the transitional spaces to accentuate the user’s experience of outdoor environments while being given the opportunity to do so within the comfort of the indoors.

Canopy Theater is an urban childrens theater designed for the site located in the heart of Haymarket Park within Lincoln, NE. Canopy Theater was a collabrative project in designing for the main focus of curating public engagment through using transparency as the driving element. The usage of open spacial configurations in addition to immense transparent glass in the design, caters not only to theatrical purposes, but as well as civic function allowing the theater to have multiple purposes. Having the relationship with its surrounding community is what drives the purpose in providing theatrical hierarchy immersing itself in the fabric of Lincoln Nebraska.

Beginning Importances While beginning the thought of how to approach childrens theater in general was always to keep the transparency of understanding both the importance and impact theaters can have on kids, adults and anyone involved, while also keeping the excitment flowing through the building by having guides of spaces, program, and elements. By having a direct correlation to past, present, and future theatrical hiearchies our purpose was ultimately to create spaces within spaces for civic engagement to become a forefront of how the agenda in performance can activate spaces together instead of lonesome.

Suspended atrium stair Having a monumental staircase in which weaves between all portions of the structure; the emphasis was all behind giving guests an experience before the shows even started. Beginning with creating a combination of having been apart of theatrical involvment the moment you walk in.

Black Box Theater The idea behind devising around a Black box theater is allowing the dark open area to organize simplicity, while allowing the rest of the building compose itself more complex and having the building create the amount of excitement jointly with the show they are there to see.

Public Engagement While guests are available to come and see shows as they wish, Canopy theater alters the way guest embed themselves into the theatrical world. Throughout the structure there in various spaces that grant individuals to the oppurtunity to practice, perform, enjoy and relax whether its a cafe, outdoor patios, and or a street level performance stage.

LINCOLN 2020 Currently Lincoln is growing at a rate of 0.75% annually and its population has increased by 13.57% since 2010.

All year networking with lincoln area nearby university theater students to accompany along side children performers.

All public access cafe for nearby residents and employees in Haymarket park allows transparency with goal of Childs theater practices

Haymarket is a Mixed use area incorparating buildings with both residential, commercial, and even industrial style markets

Parking is conjointly figured by nearby parking garages of the city of lincoln, street meter parking, and an adjacent parking lot for performers.
