Scope of the Study & Methodology As everyone knows, metaphor is widely used in several different areas including conversation, literature, proverb/sayings plus music. Although the using metaphor is basically interesting, it isn't possible for us to conduct the research in most fields. Therefore, our group chose to narrow the scope in our study in song lyrics (music) only. The research will focus on answering one research question: "How do song writers use metaphor of their song lyrics?" To accomplish this goal, we selected a handful of popular songs from various genres and then extracted certain parts of the lyrics that incorporate metaphors to thoroughly analyze.

Literature Review As metaphor has been used in lots of fields for several purposes, this rhetorical method has become mentioned in a number of lexicology books or websites. In a book for linguistic students named "Basic English Lexicology" (author: Hoang Tat Truong), the author provides the definition, the characteristic feature and the classification of metaphor. However, most of his examples are words, phrases or simple sentences often employed in daily conversations.

Whenever we google the saying "metaphor", google will lead us with a giant number of websites regarding this topic such as "literaryzone.com", "changingminds.org", etc. Such sites share something in keeping. That is, they mainly target the definition, kinds of metaphor and the examples are mostly obtained from literature, proverbs or sayings. Only a few of the websites analyse using metaphor in song lyrics. Thus, it isn't too difficult to realize the visible difference in this area. Our study will research the topic use a better understanding about English metaphor.
