Thoughts from an Agent
Equine insurance doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. If you have 6+ head, it can get pricey, no doubt. I always suggest insuring each horse for what you can afford and getting that emergency colic surgery coverage free of charge. A colic horse is scary and inconvenient, but paying for the surgery is a burden that your insurance can carry. Get with an agent today, visit about the horses in your barn and let them know your budget.. we will find a policy that works best for your family. Olive Insurance Agency is home to 8 agents, all with a background in agriculture. We are licensed in 38 states and can also insure your CATTLE, SHEEP, GOATS, SWINE, AND WORKING DOGS.

PERFORMANCE REPORT
BIGGER AND BETTER
IN TEXAS
E
By TAYLN WRIGHT
– Performance Reporter
verything is bigger and better in Texas and this year’s state finals was no exception. 2021 brought back many of the things we look forward to in Abilene, the Special Kids Rodeo, trade show, nightly jackpots, spending time with friends and the tough competition. It also built on the back-toback format that was introduced during the pandemic. The Special Kids Rodeo kicked off our state finals on Sunday. This event pairs around 30 to 40 local children who are mentally or physically challenged with rodeo contestants. Each Region is in charge of a station, and those stations consist of roping, barrels, pole bending
MCCOY’S MUTTON BUSTING
and rough stock. Contestants assist the kids as they make their way to each station interacting with them and showing them the ropes and allowing them to get the feel of rodeo. Belt buckles are awarded to each participant, but the real prize is the joy it brings to these kids, their families and the contestants. TREY JOHNSON’S MOTIVATIONAL MESSAGES Other activities that made their return to this year’s finals were McCoy’s Mutton Busting. Region 1 was represented by 7-year-old Cutter McCreary of Canyon, Texas. Classic Equine also sponsored the nightly jackpots, which had an expanded schedule this year including high stakes ropings. Events offered were poles, barrels, breakaway, calf roping, goat tying, steer wrestling, and team roping. These jackpots give the contestants SPECIAL KIDS RODEO opportunity to work on horses, practice their skills while they are away from home and potentially win some money. Something new and exciting introduced at this year’s finals was Trey Johnson’s motivational messages. Lunches were sponsored each day in the display building where Trey delivered inspirational talks to help encourage and develop young athletes to be the best they can be in the moment. 2021 brought a new twist to the back-to-back rodeo format introduced during the pandemic. This format allowed 1 head of stock for each contestant entered. With this format every roper, steer wrestler and goat tyer has the same shot, because they have the first run and a second run on the animal. Stock for timed events was
JOHN HISEL & BRAXTON HUGHES
drawn and used for one day only. This allowed contestants to be able to watch their stock for the afternoon performance go in the morning the same day. The only change from the previous year was that contestants were drawn up on different days for different events, thus allowing horses ran in multiple events the opportunity to compete on a different day. Overall, this format is the fairest for competitors and helps produce the best National Team possible. Region 1 just so happened to have three National Qualifiers this year. Gus Gaillard once again proved himself in the arena becoming a back-to-back State Champion in the Saddle Bronc. He was also the only rider to cover all 3 of his horses scoring 202 points. The team of Braxton Hughes and John Hisel clinched their spot on the National Team ending the year third in the State in the Team Roping.
GUS GAILLARD
Congratulations to ALL the National Qualifiers. Good Luck and bring home another National Team Title.
Special Note: This will be a special July / August Edition, your next Extreme Team News will be the September Issue. Have a great summer! CLASSICROPE.COM

PERFORMANCE REPORT
True Talent I
By LUKE CARPENTER – Performance Reporter
n the upcoming weeks prior to the THSRA State Finals, Region II (West Texas) was pounded with some not so familiar, but always welcomed… rain...and lots of it. The contestants of Region II adjusted and adapted their practice locations and regimens to put on a spectacular display of talent (as always) at Abilene. In the arena and outside of it. Wyatt Kibbe, steer wrestler, from Alpine Texas is headed to Nationals in Nebraska in a two way tie for the #4 position. Kibbe is grateful for his opportunity saying “I have to give everything to God, he is the reason I am able to do what I do.” Kibbe is perhaps one of the most humble contestants you will meet, also adding “I don’t try to beat anyone’s runs, I just try to beat the steer.” Lite Rifle is an event of the THSRA and TJHRA that you won’t see inside the Taylor Telecom arena, but is just as competitive as any other event. Jordan Driver secured a National Qualification at this years THSRA finals. The graduated senior from Garden City, Texas has been competing in this event since the 6th grade. Driver
explained, “My preparation for state was very simple. I knew my muscle memory would kick in once we got there.” She made sure her .22 long rifle was sighted in and working a little on her weaker positions prior to the shoot was enough to punch her ticket to her 5th trip to Nationals. Driver plans on college rodeoing in the Southwest Circuit while attending Howard College in the fall. Bronte, Texas is home to Region II sophomore Zoey Hortenstine. Zoey and her palomino horse, Lola put together three, clean and speedy runs to secure a 4th place finish in Abilene and a national qualification trip to Lincoln, Nebraska. Zoey’s prep for state finals included daily workouts and then magna-wave treatments before each run by Region II mom, Mrs. Jackie White. Zoey is very thankful for her support team, mentioning “my parents are my biggest supporters , they haul me all around for rodeos and without them I would not be where I am today.” Way out West, roping as much as she could prior to the state finals was another 2021 National Qualifier, Emilee Charlesworth. Emilee gives credit to her five year old mare SweetPea and also to her parents. “My parents help me all day everyday, and I have no clue what I would do without them,” explains Charlesworth. Emilee, along with everyone in our Region II family is dealing with the loss of a fellow friend and competitor and each of us were Roping for Rustin. We send our Region II National Qualifiers (10 TOTAL ) to Lincoln, Nebraska with prayers of safe travel. Thank you to each of you for representing Region II and we will bet on hard work and preparation any day. #TOUGHERTHANEVER

PERFORMANCE REPORT
CAN’T HOLD US BACK! By LULU EAKES – Performance Reporter
C
OVID, SNO-VID or the great rain storms couldn’t hold our state back from rodeoing. The Texas High School and Texas Jr High School Finals went off with a bang this year! We sent the best cowboys and cowgirls from Region 4 there and they made us proud. TJHRA STATE WRAP UP! Our junior high contestants made a great impression at state with round winners, short go qualifiers, and national titles. Dillon Grote is the Champion Breakaway Roper and placed third in the goat tying. Brant Cookston is the Reserve Champion Steer Rider. Chloe Willis took home the Reserve Champion Pole Bender title. Our short go qualifiers are Clayton Joles in the chute dogging, Ceegan Akins in the breakaway roping, Mayson King in the breakaway roping, Jaylen Brazzel in the breakaway roping, Alee Andrews in the girl's goat tying and breakaway roping, Lexie Logan in the girl's goat tying, and Trigger Ladd in the bull riding. Dillon Grote finished out his last Junior High State Finals, winning the boys Champion Breakaway title and placing third in the boy's goat tying, qualifying for him for the Texas National Team in both events. Dillon has noted that his proudest accomplishment is winning the Boy's Breakaway Title and qualifying for nationals in both goat tying and breakway roping. Dillon started
rodeoing in 2013, following in his mom's footsteps. Dillon's mom, Tina Grote, has been his greatest inspiration. Mrs. Grote qualified for the national team in goat tying and breakaway roping in both high school and college! It seems like Dillion is getting a jump on his Mom! In addition to Dillon's great support system, he has quite the team of horses to take him to the pay window. His first string is a 16-year-old mare “Ruby” that Dillion says has really been a horse that has taken him to the next level in the rodeo world. We can’t wait to see Dillion and Ruby at nationals! The Reserve Champion Steer Rider, Brant Cookston, has been rodeoing since he was able to walk. In addition to qualifying for state and nationals 2 years in a row, Brant has also won the 2019 All-around Champion, Champion Bull Rider, and Reserve Bareback Rider in Vegas at the Junior World Finals. Brant's mom and dad grew up rodeoing and inspired Brant to do the same. He has an amazing team of horses behind him helping him along the way. His heel horse “Wolfman” and calf horse “Just As Big As I Am” have been such a great part of the Cookston team! The Reserve Champion Pole Bender, Chloe Willis, is going to nationals sitting third! Chloe has been riding horses since she was little but started rodeoing when she was 5 years old. Chloe's biggest accomplishment just happened to be her big win at state finals and qualifiying for the national team. This year was big for Chloe, as this is her first time qualifying for state and nationals! Chloe's parents, grandparents, and even great grandparents all grew up in the rodeo world and that is what inspired her to do the same. Chloe's partner, “Taquito Quirote”, is her 19-year-old pole horse. Chloe's cousin, Carson Folmar, qualified for state on him from 2014 through 2017 in barrels and poles. Carson and him will do amazing things at nationals. THSRA STATE WRAP UP! Region 4 packed a huge punch at state! It may have been just one week but they made a
lifetime of memories in Abeline. Anna Marie Schreck is the Reserve Champion in cutting, Makenzie Mayes as Reserve Champion Breakaway Roper, and Mason Spain is the Reserve Champion Bull Rider. Our short-round qualifiers are Ellie Schreck in cutting and breakaway, Morgan Bagnell in the barrel racing, Cason Andrews in the saddle bronc, Kelon Andrews and Garrett Golden in the team roping, and Cole Carpender and Laiken Allen in the team roping. The THSRA Reserve Girls Champion cutter, Anna Marie, has been cutting since sixth grade. Anna Marie has qualified for state 4 times in her high school career and this will be her second trip to Natinals!. Her biggest accomplishment is winning the Region 4 cutting saddle in 2018 and THSRA Reserve Champion Cutter at the 2018 and 2021 state finals. Anna Marie's dad, David Schreck, inspired her love for horses, to rodeo and start cutting. Anna Marie’s partner in the cutting pen is her horse, “My Tachita Lena” or better known as “Thumper.” Thumper is a 13-year-old red roan with the biggest heart. He has been a great addition to the Schreck team. THSRA Reserve Champion Breakaway roper, Makenzie Mayes, has been riding since she was born. Makenzie has made state all 6 years she has been at regions 4. Makenzie's biggest accomplishment is winning second at state and qualifying for nationals. Makenzie's nanny, Nancy Mayes, her aunt, Mitzi Duke, and Maegan Richert inspired her to start training and riding young horses, but the person who inspired her to start
rodeoing is her dad, Jim Bob Mayes. Jim Bob qualified for the NFR 2 times in the caf roping and it seems Makenzie shares her Dad’s talent and drive! Seeing her dad win big rodeos like Houston makes her want to win like he did. Makenzie's horse “Mouse” is a sorrel gelding that her grandpaw trained. Makenzie uses Mouse as a breakaway and goat horse and they have become a force to be reckoned with in the arena! We cannot wait to cheer on Makenzie and all of the Region 4 qualifiers that will be part of team Texas at Nationals. Good Luck and Safe travels.

PERFORMANCE REPORT THSRA’S BACKBONES photos by Jennings

By LIEZA KLEIN – Performance Reporter
ell, that’s a wrap folks! One of our Region V moms posted a recap on her son’s performance and she started out by saying, “State is where hard work and big dreams collide.” This is so true! The THSRA platform is one of the biggest competitions in our rodeo career. It’s a week that tests our strengths and weaknesses, both physically and mentally. The reality of over 600 other contestants chasing the same dream, all though
nerve wracking, gives you so much adrenaline and motivation. My Region V fellow members had many highs and lows throughout the week. Seems like if the first round
SYDNI CAIN
ABI DEPRIEST
was a success, pressure mounted for that second round, making the contestant’s mental game that much harder. Lots of us had those “mess up jitters” in the first round, so once they were out of the way, the second go round went much smoother. There was most definitely tension in the air from everyone focusing on those clean, fast, and smooth runs. When the dust cleared and all the results were in, we got to celebrate 5 of our Region V members with top places and a trip to Nationals. Sydni Cain, Abi Depriest, Kash Martin, Landon Cook, and Brayze Schill will go on to Lincoln, Nebraska to compete! We could go on for days about the memories that were made, rehash our mistakes, and the
excitement for the upcoming new year. However, we should ask ourselves, did we take the time and thank the people that made this week possible? Aside from our own posse, the backbone of this organization starts with our amazingly gracious sponsors. These sponsors provide a variety of resources throughout the week for the rodeo to run smoothly. From transportation, to trailers, to boots, to hats, and even broadcasting, they make us a big deal! These sponsors are major companies, and of all the associations they could sponBRAYZE SCHILL
KASH MARTIN
LANDON COOK
sor, they choose to sponsor us. For that, we all should be extremely thankful! At our state finals, we have 670 contestants, if that many parents and kids shared appreciation posts thanking our sponsors, we could really get the word out on how grateful we are. So, please when you get a chance, thank a national, state, or local sponsor. “Trust me I never lose, I either win or learn.” This is a quote that everyone should make use of throughout their rodeo career. Each cowgirl and cowboy will go through rough patches, but they will pick themselves back up and carry on!

PERFORMANCE REPORT Ohrt Heads to Nationals

oogle Abilene, Texas and what do you find? Abilene, Texas is commonly known as “The Big Country.” How appropriate!!!! June 2 through June 12, 2021 was when the best high school athletes in the State came to see who would be making it to the next level. Amy Ohrt from Region 6 competed in the breakaway roping, goat tying, pole bending, and team roping in Abilene. Ohrt, the Texas High School Rodeo Reserve State Champion Goat Tyer, will be heading to Lincoln, Nebraska to compete at Nationals. Amy, from Victoria, Texas, is the daughter of Sheila and Tommy Ohrt. Her biggest supporters include her family and Sheyanne Stepan. Outside of the arena you might find her baling hay, riding horses, roping, hanging out with friends, and working cattle. In between rodeos this all-A student ropes and ties the dummy. Ohrt shared a secret to her success is her horses. She explained that they improved her horsemanship skills and she gets in good practices. Amy rode “Cisco” in goat tying, “Frothy” in breakaway roping, “Morgan” in the team roping, and “Frenchie” in the
pole bending at State. Amy is most proud of seeing her family’s previously trained horses succeed in rodeos. Ohrt has competed in both Texas Junior High Rodeo Association and Texas High School Rodeo Association. Amy plans to prepare for Nationals this time around by spending lots of time in the practice pen. She gets mentally prepared for competition by blocking out the noise and remembering it is just her and the horse in the arena. Her biggest challenge she faces in rodeo is the amount of pressure. Amy offers this advice to others- never let anyone put you down and always keep confidence in yourself. Her favorite part about rodeo is hanging out with friends. This is not Amy’s first trip to Nationals. She won Nationals in breakaway roping in 2019. She shared how her horse Roscoe is most dear to her because he helped her win Nationals. Amy will be heading to Gonzales, Texas to compete in Texas Youth Rodeo Association Finals after Nationals.

egion VII Cowboys and Cowgirls packed a punch at High School State finals by having 17 contestants make it to the short go. The Cinderella story was Madison Outhier, a senior, who had never made the short go at her previous three state finals. She came in first round with
a 2.43 to place 8th, Second round she was a 2.00 for first place, Short go 2.32 for a third place, and a combined 6.750 on three head to win the Average Champion and the Texas State Breakaway Champion title. Colin Fox, a sophomore, made the short go in two events. This cowboy showed off his remarkable athleticism in the calf roping with a 4th place Texas State Finals. Then came in with a driving force in the Steer Wrestling placing in every round and winning the Average & Texas State Champion Steer Wrestling title.
Jayci Byler, a junior, made the short go in all three of her events and successfully ended up claiming the All Around Champion Cowgirl title for the second time in her career and placing 4th in the barrel racing to be heading to Nationals. Region VII couldn’t be more proud of their small Lil Region and the tough competitors that represented them at the state finals. Good luck to Team Texas at the National High School Rodeo Finals. VII HIGH SCHOOL TEAM This year, Region VII’s Jr High
team hit the Ground running at State Finals in Gonzales, Texas. The Jr High Cowgirls that will be representing Team Texas in Iowa are Kami Klepac - Barrels, Sadie Howell - Goat Tying, Kinley Shook - Ribbon Roping. The Region VII Cowboys are Damien Krushall - Bull Riding State Champion, Ryder Rosipal - Boys Breakaway, Cash Cooper & Cameron Willis - Team Roping, Holden Weaver - Ribbon Roping. Congratulations to them and Good Luck at JR High Nationals in Des Moines, Iowa. Deuteronomy 31:6-“Be strong and courageous. PERFORMANCE REPORT Accomplishments
H
By LYNLEY WRIGHT – Performance Reporter
ello THSRA! My name is Lynley Wright, and this year I am the reporter for Region VIII, where I have competed since the 6th grade. I’m very excited to be able to talk about my region and our rodeo accomplishments this year, and feel extremely fortunate to have the ability to use Extreme Team News as a platform to show others what a blessed, different region we have. This years State Finals were very eventful for Region VIII, with many
of our members qualifying for Nationals. In Junior High, Campbell Pegues and Jack Shofner both qualified in the light rifle, with Tanner Vickers and Mallory Van Der Weide qualifying in the ribbons. In High School, Kirby McNeil and Maddie Aasbo MALLORY VAN DER WEIDE, TANNER VICKERS, JACK qualified in the light rifle, SHOFNER, AND CAMPBELL PEGUES, OUR REGION 8 JR. HIGH NATIONAL QUALIFIERS with Kirby earning the title of Reserve Champion. This years Reserve State Champion barrel racer was our own Alyssa Flores, and Bailey Gubert, Region VIII’s Champion Breakaway Roper, qualified for her second trip to Nationals. Garret Koch and Lane Picklo both made it in trap shooting, for a total of six Region VIII contestants who get to compete at Nationals. There are also a few names I would like to mention who did not make it to Nationals, but still proved themselves as fierce competitors throughout the week and made it to the short-go. Tess Underbrink, our regions Champion Pole Bender and Girls All-Around Champion, made it to the short-go in poles, breakaway, and goat tying. Rylee Dodson, our Reined Cow Horse Champion, and Boomer Smith, our Champion Boy’s Cutter, both also made it to the short-go and placed in the top 10. I’d like to give a personal shout out to my fellow South-Texas guitar picker, Garret Talamantes, who is the 2021-2022 THSRA Vice President. Garret helps to lead our church service every Sunday morning at our rodeos, and is always happy and ready to get involved with anything relating to our region rodeos. But as sweet as the Finals were for many of our contestants from VIII, for others it was a bitter experience. Kirby McNeil, who came to state with a torn ACL and still competed, will not be able to go and compete at Nationals, ALYSSA FLORES RUNNING BARRELS due to her injury. Craig Sciba, a 7th grader,
MADDIE AASBO, NATIONAL QUALIFIER IN LIGHT RIFLE
was our All-Around Cowboy, Boys Tie-Down champion, and Boys Goat Tying Champion. At state in Gonzales, he won the first round of Boys Goats with a 9.28. But on his second Tie-Down run, Craig broke his leg and could not finish out the week. Good or bad, everyone who went to State Finals should feel incredibly grateful that they had the opportunity to go and compete. There are so many kids, and adults, that would love nothing more than to participate in the amazing sport of rodeo, but they don’t have the ability to. In the end, though, how we do in the
CRAIG SCIBA, WHO WON THE FIRST ROUND OF BOYS GOAT TYING

arena doesn’t define who we are as people. If we can use our failures in the arena as a way to show the love of Christ to others, such as how we carry ourselves in the losses and victories, that is what matters. As this rodeo season comes to an end, I wish those of you who are competing at Nationals the best of luck, and look forward to hearing how everyone does come July!

MCDONALD – Performance Reporter
s we load up our trailers and head back home, I think we can all agree that the 10 regions competing at the Taylor Telecom Arena this past week brought the heat. From the cutting and reining cow horse to the roughstock and timed events, the amount of talent located at the THSRA State Finals was nothing short of abundant. While many athletes came to the finals in hopes of punching their ticket to the National High School Finals Rodeo, only a handful are actually getting to make the trip to Lincoln, Nebraska. Amongst those select few are not one, not two, not
KOBY DOUCH
three, four, or five, but six of Region 9's very own athletes that are going to represent Team Texas at the NHSFR. Region 9 finished strong and after all was said and done, ended up bringing home three state championships, TYLER CALHOUN one reserve state title, and two national qualifications. I had the honor of talking to Region 9's top two tie-down ropers who finished number one and two in the state, as well. It was no doubt that Koby Douch (State Champion) and Tyler Calhoun (Reserve State Champion) would dominate the competition since both of them already have state and national achievements under their belts. However, the pressure was on since they came in to the short-go in the number five and six spots, putting them just shy of the top four spots that would advance to the national competition. When asked if he had any idea that he could come in that far behind and still win the state title, Douch replied, "I had my game plan and decided just to do my job and whatever happens happens." Well, a lot happened. Douch won the short go with a smoking 7.9, put himself in the number one spot in the average, and secured
a state championship. I asked both Douch and Calhoun what their goals are going to be while in Nebraska. Their answer was simple, "win nationals." From these two young men in the tie-down roping to Jake Starns (Boy's Cutting Qualifier) and Bradlee Miller (Bareback Riding Qualifer), the boys of Region 9 did nothing short of exceptional at the state finals. The ladies did not disappoint either. Brooklyn Balch (Goat Tying State Champion) and Kiley Hargrave-Batten (Pole Bending State Champion) both came in to the final day in the number one spot and did not safety up. Balch led the event all week and tied a 6.91 to finish number one in the average and in the state. Hargrave-Batten and her pony "Socks" set the standards high in the pole bending running a 19.630 in the short-go and having a combined time of 59.499 on all three of their runs. It has been a long time coming for Balch, the junior from Buckholts, Tx. She claims that, "the key to my success was training with my dad to be in the best shape possible and making sure my mental game was on point." She made sure to "stay confident" and looked at the short-go as "just another run." The state championship dream is not just that of Balch, but also Hargrave-Batten and her pony. She and her grandpa trained this pint-sized powerhouse so this big win was special for the whole family. Hargrave-Batten prayed and prayed for safe, clean runs and was clearly blessed with that, plus much more. Both of these young ladies have the will, try, and faith to accomplish big things at the NHSFR. Region 9 held their own at the state level and there is no doubt that they will do it again at the national level. Good luck to Region 9 and all of Team Texas in Lincoln, Nebraska. Bring home the gold!

She has owned him for 10 years and JESSE HARRIS kept her same routine of keeping him exercised going into state. She told herself she had to do her job and God willing it will happen for them. As Madison said win or lose in Nebraska you are making Texas proud by just getting there! The arena does not define you and we will welcome you home with open arms. Gorham Heads to Nationals By: Taber Garcia
ome and Take It!! Gonzales is the birthplace of Texas independence; it is the site of the first battle in the Texas Revolution. Pride runs deep in Gonzales, Texas. Gonzales, Texas was the host city for the Texas Junior High State Finals from May 23 through May 29, 2021. We are also proud of this Cotulla, Texas cowgirl London Gorham. London is the daughter of Amanda Lyne and Shorty Gorham. London competed in barrel racing, pole bending, breakaway roping, and ribbon roping at state. After a tough week of competition, she rose to the top as the Texas Junior High Rodeo Association State Champion Barrel Racer and All-Around Cowgirl. London Gorham punched her ticket to Nationals. Rodeo is a big part of life for London. She enjoys hanging out with her friends and making memories when she competes. London started participating in rodeos at the age of three. Gorham has been competing in Texas Junior High Rodeo for the past two years. The movie Black Beauty is quoted to say “there is nothing like the bond between a girl and a horse.” London shared that she does have that bond. Gorham’s secret ingredient to success is keeping her

horses in shape in between rodeos. Her philosophy is to continue with what she did prior to state competition and ride her horses every day. London rode “Hitman” in barrels, “Lola” in poles, and “Frisco” in the breakaway at state. She is proud to say her horses gave her their all in every run. London’s biggest supporters include her mom, her aunt, and her horse trainer. Gorham’s biggest challenge she faces in rodeo is the amount of pressure she puts on herself. She explains how she has fun in every run and how she keeps in mind that there is always another rodeo. She works on noticing her mistakes and trying to fix them. London’s favorite rodeo memory is when she won the RFDTV American Semi Finals. After Nationals, Gorham will be traveling to the Jr. NFR in Fort Worth, Texas.
Farm & Ranch Family of the year
The folks at McCoy’s Building Supply understand that it takes a lot of hard work and the whole family pitching in to get things done on a farm or ranch. That’s why we’d like to take some time out to salute Texas High School Rodeo Association families who are farmers and ranchers. he McCoy’s Farm and Ranch Family of the Year received a $500 McCoy’s Gift Card and was announced at the 2021 THSRA State Finals.

ongratulations to this year’s McCoys Farm and Ranch Family, the Imhoffs! In order for Imhoff Ranch to be a success, Angie and Rayburn work alongside their three children, Rance (18), Josey (15) and Cooper (14). The Imhoff ranch is such a success that it has been running for roughly a hundred years. The ranch dates back four generations of Imhoffs to the 1920s. “This is a family-owned business, and it starts with my grandfather Joe Imhoff,” Rance said. Their ranch spreads out over a couple thousand acres in Plantersville, Texas (Region 9). Their ranch is a working cattle ranch that functions as a cow calf operation, which consists of crossbred cattle. Rance shared that they have around 1200 head of cattle on the ranch. In addition, they also run a coastal hay business where they farm over 2000 acres of hay. Every day, the cattle have to be fed and checked. Additionally, the hay has to be loaded, taken to those who bought it and then unloaded. The equipment also has to be checked to ensure it is working properly. Working on the ranch is family affair, as all of the Imhoffs are key to making sure the ranch runs properly. The family makes sure that
each child has their own job to do that is appropriate according to age and ability. “That way everyone learns from day one what to do and how to do it,” Rance said. Angie also added that when the kids are not working in the cow lot, “they are fishing on the pond or hog hunting to make sure the hogs don’t ruin the hayfield. Anything they are asked to do, they manage to turn into a good time.” Both Angie and Rayburn grew up on ranches and have always been surrounded by the ranching lifestyle. So, it was a no brainer that their kids would grow up on a ranch as well. When asked why the family chose this lifestyle instead of a typical nine to five job, Rance shared that “this lifestyle chose us.” Angie and Rayburn have watched their kids learn to be more organized because of their ranching lifestyle. “Especially with them rodeoing, they have to get up and tend to their own animals,” Angie said. “We always tell them that the animals get fed before we do.” She also hopes that they have learned to be dependable and stay on top of what they have to do. When they are not on the ranch, the Imhoff family clan loves to attend church together, fish, hog hunt, and, of course, go to rodeos! Rance is currently a member of THSRA and competes in tiedown calf roping and team roping. Cooper is also involved in rodeo and currently competes in breakaway and team roping in TJHRA. “It is just the people we have met that have become more like family,” Angie said. She also added that she is thankful to rodeo for teaching the kids how to win and lose. Additionally, Rance shared that competing in rodeo has made him a better hand in the pasture and cow lot. Luckily, the Imhoffs have a McCoys close to them in Montgomery, Texas. They shop there for a lot of their construction and fence repair needs. “The staff in Montgomery is always so helpful and nice to visit with,” the family said. The Imhoff family is honored to be named the McCoys Farm and Ranch Family of the Year! “When they called our name out, it took us by surprise because our region is so big and there are so many families who do well in the ranching industry,” Angie said. “It was a humbling feeling, and it was honor to get to go up there and receive our award.”

RANCE PEEBLES OF REGION II by Jacqueline Knox
C
The Whataburger Whatakid is selected due to their ability to excel both in and out of the rodeo arena. Whataburger is proud to recognize a THSRA member from each of the ten Regions who truly upholds the title “Whatakid!” Rance was chosen at the State Final Rodeo in June as the Whatakid of the Year. In recognition of this accomplishment he will receive free Whataburgers for an entire year!
ongratulations to the Whatakid of the Year, Rance Peebles! Rance is a seventeen-year-old senior from Alpine, Tx. He is a force to be reckoned with. He competes in boys cutting and reining cow horse. “I have gotten to where I like both of them the same, but I have always done cow horse more,” Rance said. Rance started rodeoing his Freshman year of high school and got involved in THSRA. “I actually grew up wanting to be a saddle bronc rider and a calf roper. That was my dream forever, but it just wasn’t God’s plan for me,” Rance said. “I ended up finding cow horse through some of our friends and that is just what I have fallen in love with. Now, that and cutting are the only things that I really ever like to do.” He rides two different horses. For cutting, Rance rides a friend’s horse names Mister. “I started going to cuttings and I met Robby Rodgers there. We just got to be friends. I would actually warmup his horse and he would help us. He just offered for me to ride his horse and I ended up making it to Nationals on him,” Rance said. He also added that one of his favorite memories is when his mom brought him a water bottle and Mister actually
38
grabbed it off of the ground and acted like he was handing it to Rance. The other horse Rance rides is named Woody. Rance borrows Woody from the Stewart family, who are like a second family to him. Rance is homeschooled so he can spend more time helping out his family and working with the animals. History is his favorite subject. “I enjoy learning about stuff that has happened in the past,” Rance said. “I think it’s because they say history repeats itself. I also think the Bible is the greatest history book there is.” In addition to school, Rance and his little brother Levens have a business called Sunset Show Goats, where they raise boar show goats. Rance also helps his dad, who is a bit and spur marker, and does some leather work. In fact, he is in the process of making his very own saddle. In addition, he braids a lot of tie strings, halters and ither cowboy gear. When asked his favorite, Rance said, “Probably working with my dad or leather work. I like doing stuff like that because I enjoy making stuff with my hands and then being able to use it.” In the past, Rance has also been involved in range management camps. In fact, a couple of years ago he made it to the national range management meeting in Nevada and did a presentation there. He also served as a leader at some of those camps. Rance also enjoys collecting pocketknives with his little brother Levens. In rodeo, Rance is most proud of making it to nationals in cutting last year and then being named the 2020 Region II cow horse champion. “That one was really tough because all of the kids in my region are really good at cow horse and so that one was a good one to win,” Rance said. He went to add that, “I think Texas is a very hard to state to compete in and it was an honor to make it to nationals because there are so many kids that are very highly competitive in their events.” This year, Rance made a big sacrifice in order to help a friend. “I made it to nationals this year in the reigning cow horse, but I ended up giving my spot to Colee Charlesworth. That is a sacrifice that I decided to make, but it has been one of the greatest decisions because it helped me to learn and see that giving is better than receiving,” Rance said. “It was more enjoyable for me to watch Colee and the other kids from Texas at Nationals then it would be to show at Nationals.” Rance chose to do this because Colee made it to nationals the precious year but was unable to finish competing because she broke her leg when her and her horse fell. “This year she came in right behind me, so she didn’t get to make it to nationals. It was her last year and I just felt like I needed to let her finish,” Rance said. Rance’s motto in life is John 16:33. It is a verse that he just stumbled upon one day and it has always stuck with him. The verse reads, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” He likes the verse because it lets him know that even when he has trouble, Jesus is always with him. He always refers to this verse when he is having a hard time and it helps him. He considers his dad, Peewee Peebles, to be his role model. “He has always been there for me,” Rance said. “No matter what I wanted to do he has always been supportive and been there. He helps me in anything I need.” Rance loves rodeo because it has taught him hard work. Additionally, he is very competitive, so he has loved how it has helped him to accept losing. “Something my dad has always said is, ‘you need to learn to lose so you know how to win,’” Rance said. He also enjoys the horsemanship because he believes that horses are such a great gift. In the future, Rance plans to go to Clarendon College and go through the ranch management course. He also plans to be on the ranch horse team while there. Rance is honored to be the Whatakid of the Year! “There are so many great kids out there, so it just means a lot to me that I was chosen for this.”
