Letter from THSRA State President

Dear Contestants and Rodeo Families, Welcome to the 75th annual THSRA State Finals Rodeo! What a great rodeo season we have had, and what a historic event this finals this is destined to be! Over 600 contestants will compete this week to see who will represent Team Texas at the National High School Finals Rodeo.

THSRA continues to advance the association’s support for its membership. The cash purse at the THSRA State Finals Rodeo has steadily increased over the past ten years. This year, the THSRA Board of Directors voted to raise the bar yet again increasing the added money to the THSRA State Finals Rodeo with an additional sum of $50,000! Now with a total of $150,000 added to the 2023 THSRA State Finals Rodeo purse, the 2023 THSRA State Finals Rodeo will payout over $290,000! Not only is this a new record payout for THSRA, but this level of payout puts the THSRA State Finals Rodeo on par with the rodeo industry’s most elite and prestigious events produced throughout the year.

In addition to the great payout, this year’s prize line is valued near $70,000! 231 trophy buckles will be awarded. Winners in go rounds, averages, and national qualifiers will receive Outlaw Spirit buckles. State Champions in each event, All Around Champions, and Queen will receive legacy buckles made from sterling silver and 10 K gold by Gist Silversmiths. Reserve Champions will receive HyO Silver buckles. All Around Champions and our newly crowned queen will go home with a beautiful Tod Sloan trophy saddle.

Plus, awards will be given to all Top 15 qualifiers to the short round in each event.

THSRA is proud of its commitment to helping students pursue a great education. This season, THSRA members will be awarded over $280,000 in scholarships with $100,000 of the total being contributed by THSRA itself. All of this is made possible due to the generous and continued support from our regions, stock show partners, scholarship contributors, and our valued corporate sponsors. Many of THSRA’s sponsor partners will be on site this week. We encourage you to take the time to let them know how much you appreciate their support!

Finally, the THSRA cannot operate without the selfless dedication and support from our community of directors, parents, and volunteers. Thanks to each of you for your help throughout the year at the region and state level to make this great event possible.

Congratulations to all contestants that have qualified to compete in this historic event! We wish you all the best of luck, and we hope you enjoy your week here in Abilene.

Sincerely,

Letter to the 2023 THSRA State Qualifiers

First of all, let me congratulate you on qualifying for the Texas High School Finals Rodeo. It is truly an accomplishment just to get to this level of competition. Please read this letter in its entirety so you are aware of all rules and time frames for the Finals.

CHECK-IN --- The contestant check-in will be Sunday, June 4th from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Just because you enter the rodeo grounds before 1:00 PM on Sunday does not mean that you are checked in. Every contestant must come to the Capital Farm Credit Display Building between those hours to check in with your region secretary to pick up your back number and to vote for student event directors. When you come to check-in, you must bring the following:

a) final report card or a letter on school stationary that states report cards have not been issued but that student has passed at least 70% of his/her 2nd semester classes. Even if you graduated early, you must bring a copy of your final report card; and,

b) coggins papers on each horse that you brought onto the grounds.

If you show up without your report card or letter from the school, you will only have until 1:00 PM on Sunday to have either one of these faxed to the rodeo office. NO REPORT CARDS OR LETTERS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER 1:00 PM -- NO EXCEPTIONS!!!! If fax is needed, please fax to (832) 553-7232. The report card will come directly to my computer. Any contestant that does not meet this requirement will be disqualified.

ALL CONTESTANTS MUST BE PRESENT AND CHECK IN ON SUNDAY!!

If you think you will have a problem making the check-in deadline, you MUST call the State office at (936)590-4447 ahead of time to make arrangements. The only excuse for a late check-in is a school related function. If you run into problems on that Sunday and think you may miss the check-in deadline, you MUST call the State Secretary at (936)332-4011.

CUTTERS & REINERS --- If you are entered in the cutting horse and/or Reined Cow Horse competition, you will have until 4:00 PM Wednesday, May 31st to check in with the secretaries, Angie Key and Anne Dollery. You must bring the same 2 items listed above with you to the rodeo office. The 1st go round will be Thursday, June 1st, starting at 9:00 AM and the 2nd go round will be Friday, June 2nd, starting at 9:00 AM. Cutting will take place in the Guitar Arena and Reined Cow Horse in the First Financial Arena. The Short Go rounds will be Saturday, June 3rd, starting with the cutting at 9:00 AM followed by the Reined Cow Horse. Working order will be drawn after the 4:00 PM deadline Wednesday. Boys will cut first Thursday, girls first on Friday and boys first again for the Short Go.

To try to save some confusion at the entrance gate, I am asking for everyone entered in either of these events to call or email me the names of anyone who will be coming to help you -- trainers, turnback help, etc. I will be giving this list of names to Rochelle Johnson, General Manager of the Taylor County Expo, to try to expedite their entrance to the rodeo grounds.

SEASON PASSES --- all prepaid season passes will be given to you by the event secretaries or by your region region secretary at the Sunday check-in along with your back number. You will still be able to buy season passes during check-in on Sunday. There will be an "Information Booth" table set up in the Display Building. All Event and Buckle Sponsors will pick up season passes and programs there as well.

STUDENT EVENT DIRECTOR VOTING --- cutters and reiners will vote for student directors when you check in on Wednesday. All other student event directors will be voted on during Sunday check-in. There will be a specific table set up just for voting. Contestants only vote for event directors in the event(s) you are a state qualifier in. Student directors are a very important position so please vote for who you think will do

the best job!

POSITION DRAW --- The draw has been sent to the region secretaries and posted on the THSRA website. You should know by now what day(s) you have drawn up. Due to unforeseen circumstances, there could possibly have been some changes once the daysheets were sent to the printer. The official position draw along with the stock draw will be posted at the Information Booth. The booth will be located on the west side of Taylor Telecom arena. CONTESTANTS - it is your responsibility to make sure you know which day you are to compete!!!! The daysheets are provided as a courtesy only and are not the Official Draw.

HOOKUPS - When you arrive at the Taylor County Fairgrounds, you will enter the facility through Gate G (rock gate) and will be taken to your hookup location by a member of the Taylor County personnel. Cutters and reiners may start arriving Wednesday, May 31st at 8:00 AM. All other contestants may start arriving on Friday, June 2nd, but please note that gates will close at 5:00 PM daily so you MUST arrive before that time or you will have to wait outside the gates until they are opened back up the next morning. Starting Saturday, June 3rd at 8:00 AM, the gates will be open around the clock. The Expo personnel has the list of contestants with the type of RV hookup each one has so please do not try to make any variations to their list!!! Your RV site will have already been assigned by the Expo personnel. They will try their best to honor requests.

NOTE FROM THE EXPO - The 30 amp RV plugs are GFI (ground fault interrupter) - if your trailer/camper does not work on GFI, you will need to have this corrected in advance of you parking on the grounds.

STALLS - all stalls will be locked when you arrive and will not be unlocked until the horse is actually on the grounds. Stalls will be preassigned.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS - we will have a virtual sponsor scholarship presentation again this year. Recipients will receive the actual scholarship certificate in Abilene. We ask all scholarship winners to pick up your certificate at the manned table by the state finals backdrop during check-in on Sunday. YOU WILL NEED TO BE IN FULL DRESS CODE WHEN YOU PICK UP YOUR CERTIFICATE!!! OFFICER CANDIDATES & VOTING DELEGATES - You will have a meeting on Thursday, June 8th in the Ranch House right after the morning performance. The Ranch House is located directly behind the West Texas Fair office. Delegates will meet the candidates at this time and voting will take place right after all the introductions.

SHOOTING CONTESTANTS - if you arrive before 5:00 PM Friday afternoon, please come check in with me at the Rodeo Office in the Taylor Telecom arena to turn in your report card and pick up your back number. Any shooters not able to check in on Friday, there will be a THSRA representative at the shooting range Saturday before the shoot starts. Both contests will be held at the Callahan County 4-H range. Details are still being worked out so more information will be emailed to the shooters once finalized.

GOLF CARTS - golf carts are available for rent again this year. A flyer was sent to the region secretaries to pass along to all contestants. You MUST be a licensed driver to rent the golf carts and ONLY licensed drivers are allowed to drive them. You MUST adhere to the seating capacity of the golf cart rented!!!

SPONSOR PATCHES - the patch policy is attached to this letter. Please make sure you read it and adhere to it the entire week of state finals. It is YOUR responsibility to know the patch rules!!!! State directors will be busy with running the rodeo and will not have time to be Patch Police!!! If you have any questions on the policy, please feel free to contact the state office at (936)590-4447.

NO DOGS ARE ALLOWED IN TAYLOR TELECOM FACILITY!!!!!

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me either at the number listed above or by email at texashighschoolrodeo@gmail.com. I look forward to seeing famil-

10

iar faces and to meeting new ones!!! Again, congratulations on making it this far and good luck to each and everyone of you. Here's to bringing that National Team Trophy back to Texas for the 8th consecutive year!!!!!

NOTES FROM THE JUDGES

The judges will be going over a few things during the General Membership Meeting Sunday afternoon starting at 2:30 PM but wanted to send a few highlights to you so you will be prepared.

ROUGH STOCK RIDERS - mandatory equipment check and safety seminar starting at 1:00 PM on Sunday, June 4th on the coliseum floor. You must be in FULL dress code (this includes your back#) and you must bring every piece of equipment with you: helmet, vest, glove, mouth piece, spurs, chaps, bull rope, bareback rigging and/or saddle bronc saddle. Judges say you must be ready when called upon - not start getting ready when called upon.

BREAKAWAY - rope must be tied to your saddle horn at the end of your rope and must be tied tightly so it cannot come off when throwing your slack. FLAG MUST BE A SOLID COLOR! NO SCROLL OR WRITING MAY BE VISIBLE!

TIEDOWN - after tying the calf and mounting your horse, ride up at least one step (would prefer the rope to touch the ground) for the six (6) seconds. If the rope is already on the ground when mounting, you must still take

a step forward. Please do not back your horse up and drag the calf as this will result in a NO TIME! The jerk down rule will be in effect - five (5) second penalty!

TEAM ROPERS - this is not a jackpot. You must be dallied and faced with ropes tight and all four legs of your horse on the ground. Make sure to hold dally until you get a flag. NO UNNECESSARY PULLING BACK!! No throwing heel loops after the header has missed. PRCA crossfire - make sure the steer has completed his switch. This is a judgment call. Judges will call what they see from the position they are in.

STEER WRESTLING - no hitting horse on the head with your bat. ALL ROPING EVENTS & STEER WRESTLING - there can be NO contact from the helper after the contestant has nodded/asked for cattle or contestant will be disqualified.

GROUND RULES

BARREL RACERS, POLE BENDERS & GOAT TYERS: --forward motion will be at the plane of the rollup door and you may pivot or turn once in the alley.

--hat must stay on until you reach the plane of the rollup door. Failure to keep your hat on will result in a 5 second penalty.

--all helpers must be in full dress code and may provide assistance up to the plane of the rollup door. One helper per contestant.

--contestants will have 60 seconds to enter the arena from the time your name is called.

--make sure all metal and/or wire is completely covered where it touches your horse.

GOAT TYING - There must be a wrap around all three (3) legs of the goats and then a hooey. The hooey is not considered a wrap. Please step back three (3) feet as soon as you can. If the rope is around your leg, you may remove it and step back.

BREAKAWAY - the only legal catch in the Breakaway Roping will be a BELL COLLAR catch. No appendages may be in the loop including the tail head. Catches that are not bell collar will result in a no time.

TIEDOWN & BREAKAWAY - One loop only in the 1st and 2nd go rounds. Two loops may be used in the Short Go if two loops are carried.

TEAM ROPING - two loops only may be used in the 1st & 2nd go rounds. Three loops may be used in the Short Go only. No one is allowed to ride in the competition arenas after the event has begun with the exception of personnel conditioning the stock and at a Rodeo Official's direction. Contestant must clear the competition arena promptly upon the completion of his/her run regardless of the success of the run.

enTRy

We will have morning & afternoon grand entries Monday through Friday and also for the short go on Saturday. Each region has been assigned a day and will need to have members there for both performances that day!!! Please have at least 5 members from your region to help carry flags. If there are not enough contestants for all of the flags, then they will be asked to carry a second flag. If you have a member that likes to carry sponsor flags, they are welcome to help at any performance. Some understand it is a good way to get their horse in the arena before competition.

Contestants will be asked to hold the flag pole upright and make one lap around the edge of the arena at a slow lope so that the sponsor flag is displayed behind them while the announcer reads the script for their flag.

BLOOMER TRAILERS, ONLY THE BEST

In a world where you can be anything, we choose to stick to the values that helped us establish Bloomer Trailers, more than 20 years ago. Although things are changing, we are still as hungry as ever to stay motivated to develop new ideas that make your life easier and your horses haul, safer. Determination might be our motivation, but reliability and trust are still at the core of our business. One thing that we have always aspired to be is trustworthy; people trust that we are putting in the time and effort to develop a product that speaks for itself when it comes to the components we use and the thought that is put forth when we send your Bloomer Trailer out on the road. For years, we have spoken about the components we use and the products we build, but did you know that beneath the surface is a story that truly defines the American success story?

At 34 years old, Randy Bloomer was a trailer dealer who was quickly standing out for his passion for the industry and his compassion toward customers’ needs. However, he knew that something was missing in the industry. As someone who was familiar with the products, but also using them, he

challenged the brand that he was working for to develop a safer trailer and utilize products that would help revolutionize the industry. When he eagerly presented this idea to the owners of the company, they shot him down. They believed that what they were doing was working, so why change it? If you know anything about Randy Bloomer, you know that good is not good enough. From a payphone, he called his wife Kim, and told her that he was going to start his own brand of horse trailers and if they built one, it would be the best trailer on the road. You see Bloomer Trailers today, but many do not know that the original trailer was designed on a Denny’s napkin, drawn by Bloomer himself and that was the beginning. Randy and Kim sold their belongings and jumped headfirst into creating Bloomer Trailers. They started with humble beginnings, in the middle of chemical alley in LaMarque, Texas. From the beginning, they have always focused on hiring the best people to build Bloomer Trailers, many of whom are still with us today. For years, they hustled and worked long hours, with minimal sleep, but they thought it was worth it to ensure that everything that is important to you is as safe as possible. Only two

years after starting, they hit their stride and had introduced many new components the horse trailer industry had never seen.

We are proud to say that no other custom horse trailer company has done more for youth rodeo athletes than Bloomer Trailers. In 2009, we became the Official Trailer of Texas High School Rodeo and vowed to build a trailer to raffle off every year, with the proceeds going directly to THSRA athletes. To this date, THSRA athletes have raised over $2,000,000 by raffling off a Bloomer Trailer.

We never imagined that our dream would lead to being used by numerous World Champions, Award-winning musicians, actors, athletes and would even be used on a hit television series like Yellowstone. We dreamed of being the official trailer of the pillar organizations of our industry and now we are proud to be the Official Trailer of the PRCA, NFR, NHSRA, THSRA, NRCHA, BFI, The American, and the iconic Pendleton Round-Up. We know that half of businesses fail after the first five years, and we are humble enough to know that our success is a testament to the support of our incredible dealers, employees and loyal customers. When you purchase a Bloomer Trailer, you are purchasing a dream that started as a quest to build one perfect trailer. Although that was over 6,000 trailers ago, we are still working hard to build the best trailer on the road.

Wow it has been an amazing year of region rodeos. We wrapped up this year's season at the high school finals in Childress. Everyone had a blast, and we even did some dancing! There was a benefit cornhole tournament to help member Caison Burrus with his medical expenses from an injury the weekend before. All the region banded together to help a fellow member and had some fun while doing so. There was also a Quinceanera next to the cornhole tournament. The amazing family

That’s A Wrap

invited everyone inside to eat. A little bit later Kaylie, the birthday girl, invited the kids in to dance. We danced the night away helping her celebrate. Although we didn’t know all the dances, we were on the dance floor every song!

YEAR END

Before and after the partying, believe it or not, we did some rodeoing as well! Everyone worked really hard this year and we are excited to be sending 10 individuals from every event to state finals. Avery Armstrong has stuck out in more ways than just her outstanding efforts as an athlete. Avery is the most kindhearted individual you will ever see. She speaks to everyone and gives great advice to the younger generation. This makes me happy to say she is the Region 1 All- Around Cowgirl and All-Around Rookie! She will be going to state in the Barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, and team roping. Our All- Around Boy is Hugh Brown. This was Hugh’s first year to rodeo for region 1 and he sure took it by storm. He will be going to state in the Steer wrestling and tie down. The Rookie boy went to Sterling Decker. He will be competing in the cutting at the State finals.

AWARDS

We gave out a few special awards at the finals. There was a scholarship in memory of Kooper Preston. Kooper was a member of our region that went way to soon. Kooper's parents came to the awards and gave the scholarship to Mr. Caison Burrus. There was an award given this year to one person who showed exemplary horsemanship. This award was given in memory of former member Clayton Anderson. Clayton is yet another member that was taken from us way too soon. The winner of the Clayton Anderson horsemanship custom Campbell Bit was Juliana Liles.

NEW OFFICERS

We elected new region officers at the finals. The Region 1 officers are as follows:

President- Avery Armstong

Vice President- Abby McCreary

Secretary- Jaxon Stoker

Treasurer- Ryan Timberlake

Abby is running for state secretary this year! She was secretary last year and did a great job representing Texas and Region 1. So, make sure to vote Abby McCreary. We are ready for Abilene and would like to wish everyone good luck and safe travels.

Summer is Here!

or work until they’re breathing has returned to normal. Electrolytes are essential for horse health. 2 tablespoons can be added to their diet in the cool weather, and it can be doubled in the hot weather. If you give electrolytes it is extremely important that they have access to clean drinking water.

Horses who have anhidrosis, which is the lack of sweating or having difficulty sweating in the summer, could struggle during the hot summer months. Horses sweat to regulate body temperature, just like we do. Horses with this condition can be helped by getting turned out at night, having fans and misting hoses in their stalls, and hosing them down with water that is cooler than their body temperature.

Some signs of heat stress in horses consist of profuse sweating, droopy ears, reduced feed intake, tiredness, and increased heart rate and breathing. Horses are more prone to heat stress and heat stroke in the hot summer months. If you notice heat stress in one of your horses you need to

Region

As we all know summer brings more rodeos and long trips to those rodeos!

Summer also means heat! As most of us are getting ready to travel it’s good to keep in mind what we can do to make the summer easier on our equine partners!

The average temperature in Texas is 85-90 degrees with some places topping out over the 100s.

Water, water everything! Horses will drink at least 10-13th gallons in cooler weather, and in 95 degree weather they will drink up to 19-25 gallons of water daily. They need access to clean, cool drinking water. If your horses have an outside water tank you will need to be sure to keep it clean of algae, which is a group of predominantly aquatic, photosynthetic, and nucleus-bearing organisms that lack the true roots, stems, leaves, and specialized multicellular reproductive structures of plants. When exercising horses in hot weather, make sure you leisurely walk after any form of exercise

get them cooled immediately, if it’s not taken care of it can cause a heat stroke. In that case you need to contact a veterinarian immediately.

Traveling in the summer with horses can be hard on horses. If possible try to travel in early morning hours or later in the evening when it’s cooler. When you stop for fuel, offer them water on the trailer in buckets, and hose them off if you have access to water. In your trailer put rubber mats on the floor and shavings on top of that then squirt them down with water to keep the heat from coming up through the floor from the road.

Some parts of the country are more wet than the others. The wetter parts of the country will have different types of bugs than the dry parts. Mosquitoes are most common in more wet climates. When buying fly sprays look for the one that will also repel mosquitos since they carry the West Nile virus which can be fatal in horses. After a rain shower make sure there is no rain water left in any tires, buckets, or barrels because that is the prime place for mosquitoes.

Region III

Region 3 wrapped up the 2022-2023 season the first weekend of April. Several region titles came down to the final run Sunday morning while others had front runners who were out of reach.

Seniors, Hadley White and Kreece Deering, battled it out over the course of 12 rodeos for the steer wrestling title with White edging out Deering by a narrow three-point margin. While Kreece came up short in the steer wrestling, he would finish the season as the Region III tie down champion, edging out Pecos Tatum by two points, and also added the All-Around Cowboy title to his resume. On the opposite end of the spectrum,

coming in Red Hot!

Savannah Letson and Jada Trosper earned region titles in the pole bending and barrel race with commanding leads. Rookie, Kash Loyd finished the year with more than double the points of his fellow bareback riders and bull rider Jesus Villa also won the region by a comfortable margin.

While the boy’s side of the arena saw a battle of the upper classmen, four of the top six All Around girls were rookies. Freshman Kameryn White finished the season as Region III’s champion goat tier, third place for the year in the breakaway, and the 2022-2023 All Around Cowgirl.

As our All Around Champions prepare for state, both Kreece and Kameryn have the same game plan to make sure their horses are in good shape and prepared to perform. Deering adds that his goal is to make the best of every run and to use his stock to the best of their potential. Kameryn is spending her time roping the dummy and working on fast

hands in the goat tying. Kameryn adds, “I will focus on one run at a time and let it all play out like God wants it to.”

Overall, Region III is sending a stout group to Abilene in June. We have spent all year pushing each other and supporting each other as Proverbs 27:17 proclaims: “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” - Region III is coming in Red Hot!

Headed into THSRA state finals, Region IV is sending some of the top athletes in high school rodeo. Including a current state champion! These rodeo competitors are gearing up to compete for the gold. Many champions were crowned at the Region IV finals. Among them were the prestigous

ALL AROUND COWBOY AND COWGIRL TITLES

Region IV’s All Around Cowgirl is 16 year old Sophmore, Kenley Beck, who resides in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. Kenley has been rodeoing for 8 years. She started out in 4-H shows, then began competing in western events such as:

competing for the gold

pole bending, barrel racing, cow boxing, trail, and halter classes. She started TJHRA region IV in the 8th grade. When asked why she chose to rodeo in Texas while being an Oklahoma native she replied, “The competition!! But also because it is a closer drive.'' Her favorite things about rodeoing in Texas are the rodeo family and “making it to Abilene for state finals, it truly feels as big as nationals.” She mentions that she feels this is a great experience that no other state has. Kenley’s main mount is her Palomino mare, “Goldie,” who Kenley raised and trained in the barrels and poles. “Goldie is a natural and loves to run” she stated. The Becks have 8 horses total, but only haul two most of the time. Kenley’s future plans are bright. Looking into the far future, she would like to experience being on a collegiate rodeo team and continue to do what she loves. Kenley ended the region IV year as Pole bending champion along with being in the top 10 in the barrel racing and breakaway roping. Kenleys mentions that the most exciting thing she has accomplished is the Texas State Pole Bending Champion title. She said, “It wasn't something that I had my mind set on, I was just making one run at a time and having fun.” When asked about who has helped contribute to her rodeo success she proudly says, “There are many people I could name that have helped me become the rodeo athlete that I am, including my parents, but there is one person I have to mention and that is Papa Bryce. I can’t thank him enough for all the knowledge and encouragement he has given me these last few years. When I needed to believe in myself and my horse he was there encouraging me to “run my race.” I contribute success to being coachable and focused. If I were to name people I would surely leave someone out!”

Region IV All Around Cowboy, 16 year old Clayton Jones of Ravenna, Texas. Although he’s only been competing in rodeo for 4 years, Clayton has already won 10 saddles and 2 All Around Titles. He competes in calf roping and steer wrestling, where he ended up reserve champion in both events. Clayton says “Calf roping would be my favorite though, because it gets my adrenaline pumped and is just fun.” So of course his favorite horse is Hannie who he calf ropes on. His favorite things about rodeoing at THSRA are getting to meet new people and making lifelong friendships. One of the most exciting things that he has won, he says, is the trailer for Texoma Junior Rodeo Association All Around. Clayton spends multiple hours a day in the practice pen, practicing and training multiple horses. After high school, Clayton’s plan is to rodeo and train horses. “My grandpa, Terry Sauter, is the person I contribute my success to. He has helped me in so many ways to better myself as a person and a competitor”

Region IV is bringing some tough competition to the THSRA finals this year and it will be an exciting end of the season event. Just like these two all around competitors, hundreds of qualifiers are working hard to prepare for their runs and rides. Good luck and safe travels to all getting ready to head to Abilene next month!

Summer is almost here and that means that it is time for the Region V high school students to head to Abilene, Texas for Texas high school state finals.

The state finals competition is made up of the top ten in each event from all of the Texas regions. These hard working and talented athletes will compete at state to try and be one if the top four in Texas to compete at the national level in Gillette Wyoming. This year Region V athletes worked so hard to see their names in the top 10 positions to head to state. This year our champions and reserve champions are as follows. In the rough stock events you will see Landon Cook as your champion in the saddle bronc, Bryce Jensen ended the year as champion of the bull riding with Jax Mills in the reserve champion position. The champions of the team roping were Sam Shofner one the head side and Cole Pugh as your heeler, the reserve header was Chase Rambin with George Chambers on the heel side. You will see Cole Pugh again at state as the champion of the steer wrestling along with Sam Shofner as your reserve champion. All Region V’s events had many changes in the top spots all through out the year. I know we are all getting in the arena and working hard to bring out very best to Abilene, Texas. Many of the athletes you watched compete this year were seniors. Most of which have signed to different colleges to further their rodeo careers and their education. Blake Blanchard signed with Oklahoma State University. Region V also has two athletes heading to Hill College, Saige Brown and Alex Rodell, Landon Cook and Avery

everything they have worked for out there in the middle of that arena come Saturday at the short go. Region 6 is having 58 contestants compete at the finals and 18 of those contestants are seniors so if you hear lots of cheering from Region 6, feel free to cheer with us as we help our rodeo athletes at THSRA Finals. Everyone has put in blood, sweat, and tears to get to this week, now all we have left to do is put on a great performance for everyone! So let’s make this the greatest show on dirt.

This is a very exciting time to be a Texas high school rodeo athlete. With State Finals just around the corner, everyone is wondering, “Who will come out on top?”

For Region 7, our goal is to BE the best of the best. We are sending our top ten athletes in each of the events, along with their amazing completive spirits. The week of state finals is a long, hot, fun filled week, spent on the concrete of Abeline, Texas. There will be

many long days and late nights filled with a mix of focus and fun.

Region 7 athletes and family members, if you ever get hungry, you know there will always be food at our tent, along with music and fresh drinks. We are known for our fun final’s traditions; such as water balloon sneak attacks, live music, and secret golf cart racing.

A big congratulations to the Region 7 All-Around Cowboy and Cowgirl, Bryce Ehlinger and Kinley Shook. These two competitors worked day and night to perfect their skills, and it showed in the arena. Bryce will be representing region 7 in 3 events – boys cutting, team roping, and tie down. Kinley will be competing in 2 events, as the region champion of both – barrels and goat tying.

Hard work and dedication, like Kinley and Bryce’s, is a great foundation to build your rodeo career on. Often rodeo athletes start from a very young age, but even then, it’s all about hard work and a little bit of talent. Collen Powell once said “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.” That last one is the most relatable. There is more learned from the losses than from wins. The most rewarding part of doing a sport is seeing your hard work pay off. Rodeo is no different. The feeling you get after finally having a good run after a rough, is like no other.

Moral of the story = never stop working.

James 1:12 “Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.”

Oh how we were so excited for state finals this year, to show what we can bring to the table this year. We have many amazing competitors heading up there and some of them are Campbell Pegues and Gracie Green. All of them have been working hard for an opportunity just like this.

1, 2, 3... and we're off to Abilene

this cowgirl is not only going to state for one thing not two things but 3 things she is placed 2nd in all around and she is so blessed and excited to have qualified for state out of one tough region Green has definitely had her fair share or downs and successes she is where she is today for the blood sweat and tears and hard work but knowing her parents would be their to support her 110% she knew it would always be possible. A bond between a horse and rider is one of the most important things, and she is so thankful for all that her horse does for her in the arena and out of the arena. “Nothing would be possible without giving thanks to God, my parents, and all my friends who support me through thick and thin.”

Region VIII

Campbell Pegues is on fire making it to state as a freshman she has been to state 3 times and this will be her fourth but this year will be just a bit different she states “ Not only is the location different, but the competition will be harder too.” She definitely works hard to make it in Poles, breakaway, goat tying, light rifle and Trap shooting. Not only is she making sure her horse is ready to go to state but as well as herself she works on mental health and she makes sure she is 100% focused to compete. Pegues says “If I am prepared mentally for the competition, I know my abilities will be too.” If you are trying to make it to state, always have dedication year round, surround yourself with people who believe that you can do it. Knowing to have a great run is definitely a mental key factor, always relying on training and visualization. Never worry about the fastest time or who’s winning, you know what you have to and get it done. A wonderful season would have never been possible without my family who is out in the arena with me everyday. They definitely play a huge part in my success, Dave Jolin for horsemanship, Townsend for consent support “also I belong to the best rodeo region in texas. Region 8 is the best!”Gracie

All of region 8 cowgirls and cowboys strive and push each other to work harder and harder. Making it to state is such a great achievement and we can’t wait to see what other regions bring to the arena dirt. We have fun making friends and gather a lot of memories. Congratulations we will see you in Abilene very soon (day of state).

From the national rankings in junior high to her freshman year of high school rodeos, Reese Jacobs has been one to watch over the past eight years of her youth rodeo career. She has an extensive resume with multiple titles under her belt, such as being named the 2021 TJHRA state champion goat tyer, 2021 NJHFR national champion goat tyer, and this year's reserve champion goat tyer from Region IX. Reese looks to make her first trip to Abilene one to remember and go out with a bang for her rookie year of high school rodeos.

Reese comes from a rodeo family and is grateful for the opportunity to compete alongside her younger sister, Presley Jacobs. Presley is a sixth grader who just finished up her rookie year of junior high rodeos. As both sisters prepare for their upcoming state finals, they have both set pretty high expectations for themselves. Reese states that her plan going into the state finals is to “make my

runs to the best of my ability and qualify for nationals.” Throughout the course of the region rodeo season, Jacobs set goals for herself to make sure she had a chance to accomplish her goals and compete at the 2023 THSRA State Finals. “Some of my goals this past year was to make it to state in both my events and improve consistency with my horses,” Reese said. In typical Jacobs fashion, she achieved all that she set out to and will be competing in both the breakaway and the goat tying in Abilene. When asked how she plans to prepare for the state finals, Jacobs stated, “Much of my preparation is improving my skills in the practice pen but also keeping my mental game strong.” Anyone who knows the sport of rodeo knows that it takes a support system to be successful. “My parents have always been my #1 supporters through all the highs and lows in rodeo,” she proclaimed. However, Reese expressed a large amount of thanks to her father, Bobby Jacobs. “He is always there to turn out calves in the practice pen, keep my crazy goat horses calm in the alley, and help me keep my skills strong,” she explained. Along with her parents, Reese is blessed to have two equine athletes, Bean and Jewels. Bean is Reese’s breakaway horse who is her “main man” but can also be a “handful at times.” Jewels is her goat tying that Jacobs trained herself. “She is a fireball but definitely my favorite,” Reese exclaimed. Outside of the arena, Jacobs represents New Waverly ISD, where she competes on the volleyball team and is enrolled in dual credit classes through Lone Star College. Reese is the true definition of a student-athlete who takes pride in all that she does.

According to Reese, her first year of high school rodeo was a “great experience, full of many learning moments and great times with my friends and family.” Jacobs and all other Region IX contestants will be exciting to watch at the 2023 THSRA State Finals. On behalf of Region IX, we would like to wish all of the high school contestants safe travels and a blessed state finals in Abilene.

The coveted All Around title is one that can be won any number of ways – sometimes the winner is dominant in just a couple of events, but other times, the winning competitor earns points in multiple events, truly building their point total event-by-event, rodeo-by-rodeo.

That was certainly the case for this year’s Region X All Around Champions

– Spring Pennington and Rowdy Quattlebaum. Both are multi-event competitors who earned points in three to four events to secure their place at the top.

All In for the All Around

As the Girls All Around Champion, Spring pulled in points from four different events to ultimately come out on top. She was the Reserve Champion Goat Tyer, 6th in the Barrels, 6th in the Breakaway Roping and top 20 in the Pole Bending.

Spring said, “It feels amazing to finally win the All Around! It’s been a goal of mine for the past five years, and I finally got it accomplished after being the runner up all the previous years.”

Rowdy relied upon his Championship in the Tiedown Roping, along with a 7th place finish in the Steer Wrestling and a top 20 finish in the Team Roping to propel him to the Boys All Around Championship.

Rowdy said that hard work, persistence, great horses and an even better support system allowed him to accomplish his goals this year. He added, “In the All Around race, you can’t let one bad run define your day. You have to take one event at a time, and good or bad, you have to leave it in the arena and move on to the next event.”

Spring and Rowdy will join hundreds of competitors this June at the THSRA Finals in Abilene, and they’re working hard to sharpen their skills and be prepared to compete at the top of their game. Region X will send approximately 60 competitors to the Finals, and we wish all the cowboys and cowgirls a safe, successful week!
