Welcome to our 2024 Choice Angus 8th Annual Yearling Bull Sale

After a challenging season and low cattle prices in 2023, it is encouraging to see the turn around with widespread rainfall and the cattle markets trending upwards, returning optimism to the industry.

We are pleased to offer 65 true yearling bulls this year in our sale line-up. Our breeding objectives of finding the “balance” between phenotype and positive fats without compromising on temperament and structure has delivered a group of very even, sound bulls. These bulls display plenty of muscle and depth, body length with softness and quiet temperaments which we are earning a reputation for. A large percentage of the bulls on offer this year are suitable to join with heifers.

This years line up include a large proportion of bulls sired by the $280,000 Australian record Angus sire Millah Murrah Rocket Man R38 and Millah Murrah Parratrooper P15. These sons display plenty of their sires’ power and thickness and exceptional temperament. Millah Murrah Nectar N334 is another great sire with sons available this year and Moogenilla Quinella Q33 whose sons are already topping sales at $75,000. Karoo Realist N278 has stamped his sons with exceptional phenotype and temperament with well balanced EBVs and PA Full Power 1208 sons have plenty of muscle, soft skin and positive fats.

Our inspection day will be held at the picturesque “Coolowie” property in the Horton Valley, home of Choice Angus on Wednesday 28th August, we encourage you to come and view the sale bulls in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with refreshments provided. Tim and Rebecca along with David Simpson- Elders Bathurst, Richard Gleeson and Justin Oakenfull - Elders Inverell will be present to ask any questions you may have.

On behalf of the Choice Angus team we thank you for supporting our 2024 sale and wish you the best of success with your purchases.

Kind Regards, Tim Brazier and Rebecca Brazier

Using Yearling Bulls for Real Benefits

Nature intended bulls to work at 12 - 14 months of age as this is when they become sexually mature and are still light and agile enough to learn their new trade without a high risk of injuring themselves.

Bulls who are first put out as two year olds are at higher risk of injury as they are heavier when they are learning the trade.

Management

Yearling bulls are much easier to manage both in and out of the cows as they are out working when their testosterone kicks in and not in a mob of other bulls learning to fight and bully out of sexual frustration.

Joining Heifers

Just because he is a yearling bull does not make him a heifer bull. As with any bull, his effect on calving ease is determined by genetics for birthweight and shape. However, suitable heifer bulls used as yearlings will mean less injuries in heifers as well. Due to their lighter weight they can be used over heifers for more years as you will have them for longer before they reach their mature weight.

Guidelines for using Yearling Bulls

· Don’t put yearling bulls out with older and bigger bulls in their first year as the bigger bulls will injure the yearling bulls while they are serving.

· Only join to a maximum of 35 females in the first year.

· Only join for a maximum of 6 weeks in the first year.

· Ensure the bulls are up to date with parasite control and vaccinations.
