CLA O ffice Update Submitted by Laura Eck lund As 2020 began who k new that we would cur rently be living through histor y. I n just t wo shor t months the ter ms “Covid-19” and “social distancing” became par t of our ever yday conversations. Covid-19 has forced us all to slow down and assess what is impor tant in life.

I would like to congratulate Limousin members on a successful bull sale season.

D espite being faced with a wor ldwide pandemic dur ing this time sales were still largely successful. Each province had a unique set of circumstances they were presented with and social distancing protocols to follow. The seed stock industr y adapted quick ly to adhere to the new protocols moving sales online and limiting the number of people at the sale. I would also like to say thank you to Limousin buyers who had to adapt to the new procedures of ten having to lear n new online bidding procedures. The beef industr ies abilit y to adapt is a testament to the strength and resilienc y of the people.

When presented with a problem we come together to solve it and move for ward stronger because of it. Collec tively we can be proud of the 2020 bull sale season and the lessons lear ned from it.

The beginning of the year also brought about changes to the staff at the CLA office. We are pleased to welcome a new R egistrar to the Canadian Limousin Association! N icole S cott has accepted the position of CLA R egistrar and joins cur rent staff, Shayla Chappell and Laura Eck lund.

N icole is replacing Dallas Wise in this role.

operation 40 minutes south of O ttawa Ontar io, running just under 1000 acres of grain and hay as well as 30 head of Limousin and Limousin influenced cattle.

She attended Lakeland College in Ver milion Alber ta where she achieved a diploma in Animal S cience Technology and is cur rently finishing up her diploma in Agr ibusiness.

Please help us welcome N icole as you wor k with her over the coming months. As we continually monitor the Covid-19 situation N icole will be wor k ing remotely and will move to the Calgar y office when the situation allows.

We are also pleased to welcome Jason Brock as the new CLA French Liaison. Jason will be providing translation on contrac t for our Q uebec members and is replacing B er nard D ore in this position.

Jason along with his wife M elissa and k ids Spencer and K aitlyn operate BLB Far ms in J ason B rock Danville, Q uebec pr imar ily raising Limousin cattle. Jason was a CLA B oard member from 2004-2009, including ser ving as President for t wo years. Please help us welcome Jason in this role.

There have been many questions about what a 2020 show season will look like for our juniors. Af ter great consideration, the 2020 Canadian Junior Limousin I mpac t Show has been postponed to July 28-July 31, 2021. With the cur rent restr ic tions in place in Ontar io it was in ever yone’s best interest to postpone the show. The show will now be held at the Spencer ville Fairgrounds in Ontar io. I would like to thank Laura S cott and the I mpac t Show Committee for their leadership and commitment to our juniors and their families dur ing this time. We look for ward to gather ing again and showing cattle with our C JLA members and their families nex t summer!

There has been a great deal of excitement sur rounding this show and we hope to car r y that into nex t summer. The C JLA B oard of Direc tors are cur rently wor k ing on vir tual events for this summer for juniors to par ticipate in. O ur juniors wor k hard on their cattle and it is impor tant that they are still given the oppor tunit y to showcase

this. Please keep an eye on C JLA social media and our website for details.

We have also decided to postpone the CLA Annual G eneral M eeting which was or iginally scheduled to be held in conjunc tion with the I mpac t Show. An announcement will be made with a new date and location once plans are finalized.

The elec tion of the CLA B oard of Direc tors will take place this fall pr ior to the AGM. M embers in good standing will receive a voting pack age in the mail at this time.

There are 5 candidates running for three positions on the board. The Candidates are Carolyn Dar ling, Dan Dar ling, Ashton Hewson, Travis Hunter and Cody M iller. Full bios of each candidates can be found in the CLA M ay Newsletter.

I am excited to return to the Board of Directors of the Manitoba Limousin Association. I farm with my wife Melissa and our 2 children Reese and Wyatt, My parents Lloyd and Joan Atchison, and my nephew Tyler Scott.

We operate on 5500 p h oto c redit : L i m o us i n Vo i ce deeded acres and 4500 rented acres just east of Pipestone in south west Manitoba. We calve around 700 cows annually starting late April and background our calves and market in late March or run them on grass until early September. Our journey using Limousin genetics began 1970 with my parent’s participation in the foreign breeds’ evaluation project and continues today. Our Bull battery consists primarily of Limousin and Lim Flex bulls along with a few angus bulls we use to breed for replacement females. I encourage everyone interested in the Limousin Breed to talk to myself or any director to share your thoughts.
