welcome to the carman country fair Dufferin Agricultural Society President It’s that time of the year again. Volunteers have been hard at work, planning, and preparing for the 2015 Carman County Fair. I would to extend a hearty welcome to all those visiting, and I hope that you will not only have a lot of fun during the fair, but that you will also learn new things, and make new memories.

I have been a part of the Dufferin Agricultural Society for a few years now, and this year as president, I have been given the chance to awaken a new appreciation for the world of agriculture. The Carman Agricultural Fair has always been a family event, and this year we have been working hard to make sure that this fair is not only family friendly, but also educational.

There are many talented people present at this fair, who will be displaying their work. Please take the time to walk through the exhibit building to see what our local students have been busy creating this year, as well as some amazing art work, sewing, and baking done by talented people. Take a walk outside, and see the 4H club members presenting their skills. Come take a look at the livestock, and the heavy horses. Please recognize the tremendous amount of work, and hours these people have put into these presentations, and take the time to appreciate the talents that they have been blessed with. Don’t be afraid to ask some questions here and there, it’s always nice to have someone show interest in something you have worked very hard for.

This year, for the first time ever we hope to present to you the Carman Dufferin Farmer’s Challenge. This challenge, we hope will give you an idea of what kind of challenges a farmer might have to deal with. I hope that you will stick around to watch the grand finals on Friday evening, where teams will compete for a grand prize of $2500. I hope this event will be a huge success, and a fun challenge to look forward to in years to come.

I am grateful for another year in which we can celebrate this fair; let us not take it for granted. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that this year marks 70 years since the end of the Second World War. I am forever thankful of those who fought to liberate my fatherland. Among these, there were many Canadian soldiers; many of whom were farmers. We are forever grateful for the brave and selfless sacrifice that they made.

It takes many volunteers to put this event together, and our board has been busy all year round preparing for this weekend. Please take the time to thank them for their hard work. This fair would not be possible without the generosity and support of our incredible sponsors! Please also help us thank them by showing your support for these great businesses and organizations. Thank you!

With her unique vocals and writing, Amy has caught the attention of some of the biggest writers in country music today. She has written over 250 songs herself and co-written with talents such as Byron Hill (Gord Bamford, Gary Allen, Kenny Rogers, George Strait ….) Grammy award winners and Nominees, Cindy Morgan and Wayne Kirkpatrick (Little Big Town, Faith Hill, Martina McBride, Trisha Yearwood…), Duane Steele (Gord Bamford), and Phil Madeira (Garth Brooks, Civil Wars, Toby Keith…) to name a few.

She will argue that not a day goes by that she isn’t inspired to write. Surrounding herself with reasons to be inspired, “I’m hardly ever not writing something” says Amy. Many of her ideas have come to mind while working with horses, her second job, “It’s a peaceful job and gives you a lot of time to think and do hard work at the same time…also the horses don’t mind if I record a voice memo on my phone in the middle of a conversation, cause well, they don’t generally reply to me anyways haha” Her debit EP is set to be released in the spring, with 6 of the 7 tracks written on her own. Amy hopes the compilation gives listeners a good sense of who she is as a person. “This EP, if you listen to the lyrics, is about self discovery whether that be through someone who hurt you, someone you’ve lost, or the person you’ve shaded yourself to be. As a new artist I’m trying to figure out my place in the mix and this album is a good representation of the last few years of my life. There are a lot of question marks in the lyrics. I’ve been blessed to write with so many amazing writers but I felt like the stuff we wrote was better suited for my second album, allowing room for growth and to show another side of me…as there seems to be a few of those!”

manitoba miniature horse club Show Ring ‘M’ south of Arena The D.A.S. once again welcomes the Manitoba Miniature Horse Club. The MMHC was formed in 1993 and celebrated their 20th anniversary in 2013, by holding their MMHC Show in Carman, the site of the first club show 22 years ago. The Club was formed with the goals of developing, promoting, breeding, training and exhibiting these wonderful horses. Miniature Horses are ideal as first horses for children, as companion horses for retirees, and they are great for everyone in between. These tiny equine have become known as “The Horse for Everyone”. Join us for our Miniatures and Hackney Show on Friday July 10 starting at 9 am

manitoba SHORTHORN association Saturday Morning SHOW RING #2 Shorthorns are one of the foundation breeds of cattle and are originally from Scotland. Thirty other beef breeds of cattle today have their foundation from Shorthorns. Walter Lynch brought the first purebred Shorthorns to Manitoba in 1870, walking from Winnipeg to Portage la Prairie, to the shores of Lake Manitoba. By 1886, the Dominion Shorthorn Association (known today as the Canadian Shorthorn Association) had a membership of 444.

The Shorthorn breed is gaining popularity once again as cattle producers are taking note of strong maternal traits, coupled with excellent carcass performance and tremendous cross-breeding potential. Studies have shown that Shorthorn and Shorthorn cross feedlot calves outperform other breeds when it comes to average daily gain, feed conversion, and carcass grades.

d.A.S. DINING HALL The D.A.S. Dining Hall, located in the Carman Active Living Centre, is a cool place to relax and enjoy a cold plate, sandwich, salad, pie & coffee or a cold drink. The friendly D.A.S. volunteers will be happy to serve you from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. through out the fair.

The Dufferin Agricultural Scholarship is awarded annually to a student or students who will be pursuing agricultural related studies in a university or college. Participation in an animal related club or organization is not necessarily criteria for eligibility, although such participation is encouraged and will be taken into consideration. Any student who is actively involved in the Carman Country fair, thorough exhibiting or volunteering, will be eligible to apply.
