Get to know the FSS Commander

Lt Col Joseph A. McIntosh

assumed command at 87FSS on July 21, 2023. He was previously assigned as the Commander, 377th Force Support Squadron, Kirtland AFB, New Mexico.

He was responsible for leading a diverse 480-member squadron comprised of military and civilian personnel, manpower, education, training, family, child and youth programs, honor guard, fitness, food service, lodging, MWR, mortuary affairs, personnel readiness programs, official mail center and recreation activities in support of the 377th Air Base Wing and 108 mission partners encompassing over 27,000 military, civilian, and dependent personnel.

He managed an annual budget and assets valued at $20M and 125 facilities. Lt Col McIntosh earned his commission through the Reserved Officer Training Course in October 2008. His prior assignments include Serving as Manpower Personnel Flight Commander, Sustainment Services Flight Commander, and Deputy Chief of Protocol at USSTRATCOM. Prior to assuming his previous position, he was the Chief, Plans and Operations Branch, Personnel Readiness Division, J1, United States Forces Korea.

The 87FSS Education & Training Center is located adjacent to Falcon Courts North family housing area, at the end of School House Road, past Endeavor Elementary School, and McGuire North Chapel. We serve as the home-base to Voluntary Education, Base Training, Formal Training, Civilian Training Management, and Testing Services. The 87FSS Education & Training Center offers excellent educational opportunities to military personnel, family members, and civilian employees. An Education & Training Services Section Chief oversees the 87FSS Education and Training Center, staffed by 10 diverse civilian personnel, 3 on-base college representatives, and a National Test Center coordinator.

For Voluntary Education services, staff members are available during walk-in hours Monday – Thursday, from 8:00am to 3:00pm and Fridays by appointment, ready to provide academic advisement and counseling for multiple programs, including Community College of the Air Force (CCAF), Air Force Military Tuition Assistance (TA), DoD USAF SkillBridge Program, Transition Assistance Program’s Higher Education Track, and Dept. of VA GI Bill. It is very likely you may attend an Education Brief across the base at some point, as we actively collaborate and support other base agencies, such as, MFRC for Newcomers’ Orientation and Transition Assistance Program (TAP); the Development Advisor for Informed Decision

Base Training also is a part of Wing Inspection Team (WIT) and delivers a quarterly Training Performance Metrics (formerly Status of Training-SoT) briefing to the 87ABW Commander and Command Chief.

For Formal Training Services, there are Air Force Development Technicians that process Formal Training Report on Individual Personnel (RIPs) daily for Airmen going to training.

Every month, we host at least one special event for family and friends to enjoy extra fun. Examples include our Ghosts and Goblins Halloween Party, Military Appreciation/Veterans Day special, Breakfast with Santa, and our Bowl in the New Year - New Year's Eve Bowling Parties. All these events are packed with fun. Our Bowl in the New Year event is always a huge success. You have 2 parties to choose from. If you're not a night owl, our daytime event from 12-5pm is perfect for you. For just $55 per lane, you'll receive 2 hours of cosmic bowling with shoe rental, musical entertainment, delicious pizza, and refreshing soda for up to 6 people. All American Inn located at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst never stops operations! Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, we mirror the fast pace the members of Air Mobility Command require of us.

Servicing a Joint Base means that All American Inn serves guests from all around the Joint Base community: Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard, Reserves, civilians, retirees, and their families. While our mission is to serve our service members and their families, we are open to all who have access to DoD installations.

All American Inn consists of approximately 110 civilian employees working together to ensure that each guest has the best accommodation, service, and convenience during their stay so that they can better focus on the tasks that brought them to this installation.

Our Lodging operation has an arsenal of 498 Visitors Quarters (VQ) rooms, 50 Temporary Lodging Facilities (TLF) rooms, and 15 Distinguished Visitors Quarters (DVQ) rooms across 7 buildings located on McGuire, Dix, and Lakehurst sites. Each one of the 15 DVQ rooms are commemorated by names such as the “Tommy B. McGuire” and “Blake” suites. Tommy B. McGuire was a United States Army major who was killed in action during World War II for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor and was one of the most decorated American fighter pilots, and the second highest scoring American ace; the “Blake” suite was named after Ester Blake who became the first woman to enlist in the Air Force, joining the Women of the Air Force (WAF) program the first minute of the first hour of the first day that regular Air Force duty was authorized to accept women among their ranks on July 8, 1948. Among the other named suites are the Liberty, Constitution, Garden State, Globemaster, Extender, Stratotanker, Starlifter, Galaxy, Nightingale, Lightning, Pudgy, Hercules, and the Maloney Suite.

JBMDL Community members fortunate enough to live and/or work on the East side of the installation have easy access to Fitness Center Lakehurst – an expansive 732.323.7266 and comprehensive fitness and sports facility offering a wide range of recreation programs led by a friendly team of experienced staff members. If you live on the McGuire/Dix side, the scenic 30-minute drive is well worth your time!

Upon entering JBMDL Lakehurst, Fitness Center Lakehurst is the first building on your right-hand side. Though the large brick facility appears ordinary from the outside, you will be impressed by the spacious 28,000 square feet of fitness and recreation awaiting inside the front doors. Although the bones of the building date back to the early days of airships, almost everything inside is brand new. Whether you are a regular or a first-timer, our friendly staff will welcome you with a smile and make you feel like part of the family in no time at all.

What We Offer Fitness Center Lakehurst boasts an indoor walking/ running track, full-court basketball, volleyball court, wallyball court, racquetball court, pickleball court, well-appointed strength training and free weight room as well as two separate functional fitness rooms equipped with full training racks, kettlebells, dumbbells, and a variety of additional cardio equipment such as Concept2 rowers and stationary bicycles. Our cardio equipment is arranged around the perimeter of the basketball court, the Center also offers a separate, more private cardio room equipped with TVs and personal displays allowing patrons to log into personal streaming channels. Additionally, there is a group cycling studio, a group exercise studio, a kiosk offering virtual classes in between instructor-led classes, and a small stretching room offering much of the equipment needed to perform rehabilitative exercises from an injury or surgery.

If you’re not sure where to start, ask for Fitness Specialist, Ann Summers, who is available Monday through Friday to ensure that you have a great experience and access to all we have to offer. If you like to be outdoors, our Fitness Center include an outdoor running track 28 GOMDL MAGAZINE

where quarterly walk and run events are held. You can also enjoy the natural, tree-lined landscape on a walk anywhere on the base. Restrooms are available during the warmer months at the Sports Complex adjacent to the softball fields and outdoor track. Back at the main Fitness Center, there are plenty of lockers in our locker rooms equipped with hot showers and saunas. Patrons must supply their own towels and toiletries. Padlocks are available on loan out if you forget yours at home.

Best of all, everything is FREE at the Fitness Center.

This includes group exercise classes, intramural and extramural sports programs, 5K runs, health and wellness classes, weight room orientations, and seasonal aqua Zumba at the FSS Pine Ridge Outdoor Pool. Although we do not offer personal training, you can schedule an appointment to meet with one of our trained staff

members to help you to reach your goals. A monthly group exercise calendar is posted online at GoMDL.com and a hard copy is posted in the Fitness Center. We offer a variety of classes each week.

Currently, Cycling is our hottest class, however, if there is a class you would like us to offer, please let us know!

Our amazing group fitness instructor, Karin Forsberg, LOVES to teach and will make patrons of all fitness levels feel like a member of the family.

Intramural and Extramural Sports Soccer, Softball, Flag Football, Volleyball (indoor and outdoor), Basketball, Bowling, Pickleball and Dodgeball are leagues offer throughout the year. All sports leagues are inclusive and made up of a unique mix of athletes and non-athletes. This includes the average patron looking to boost morale in their work center, high school stars reliving the glory days, and the occasional former college player. Everyone has a blast, and no one takes the games too seriously (most of the time).This combination of skill sets makes these programs more fun than competitive. Games are played on weekdays at lunchtime with no after-work commitments. Where else can you play FREE intramural sports on your lunch break? Sports Specialist, Matt Melon, who oversees Lakehurst Intramurals, enjoys talking about sports almost as much as he loves participating in them and he can’t wait to meet you.

Who are our customers?

Fitness Center Lakehurst serves JBMDL community members from active-duty military members comprised mostly of Sailors attached to NSA Lakehurst, TEST Department, and CNATT to name a few. We also service active duty and reserve personnel from the Army, Marine Corps, and Air Force and a large community of veterans and retirees, as well as career DoD civilians and contractors. Lunchtime is the busiest time of day, but most active-duty members muster and train together in the early morning hours. If your group or unit would like to have an instructor-led workout or a morale-boosting event such as dodgeball, we are happy to arrange it for you. We also offer non-traditional games like cornhole, Kan Jam, and ping pong.

Family Child Care at JBMDL By Alicia Stasiulis As we face childcare shortages everywhere, we have a resource for those who are looking for a more personal form of care for their children – Family Child Care. This is a group of people who have chosen to become another form of care outside of facilities but still give the socialization that may not be present with a nanny. Those who have heeded the call to provide a safe, healthy, loving, and educational environment for our military families are true heroes. They set up their homes to accommodate a wide variety of ages and skill levels. They receive the same training that a Child and Youth Program Associate receives, the same background checks (even for their family members), monthly observations, and monthly inspections. There are several areas where they will even receive more training than those in our Child Development Centers and Youth Programs.

The Family Child Care provider (FCC) is trained in CPR and First Aid as well as Blood Borne Pathogens every two years. They are trained using Public Health information for food safety and also participate in the Child and Adult Food Program which follows USDA guidelines.

This encourages well-prepared meals and snacks with increased exposure to new foods. Positive Guidance techniques are taught as well as redirection techniques to help the children in their homes learn how to handle their emotions and behaviors. The providers are always aware of the children in their homes and have been educated on how to spot when a child or their family may need assistance. Military life gives us hurdles to navigate at times, children pick up on the feelings of their grown-ups or at times may get a little lost as their grown-ups learn how to deal with the changes they are going through. We help our providers set up environments and activities for healthy development of social/emotional skills, cognitive skills, fine and gross motor skills, as well as language and literacy skills. Parent and Family Relations are important in all Child and Youth Programs military-wide. Our FCC providers are no exception to this. Our focus is on family, regardless of what family looks like for you. We as a program and as individuals support diversity and inclusion.

The providers receive a minimum of 24 hours of training annually. Child and Youth Programs also uses a digital platform for training all individuals involved in caring for children. This platform is

continuously updated to have the most current information for the care and education of children from birth to school age.

FCC providers use this platform, www. virtuallabschools.com, for not only initial training (99 hours) but also for professional development.

The modules are so well developed that they can be used as credit toward an associate degree in Early Childhood Care and Education. They can also be use for a CDA (Child Development Associate).

We strongly encourage our providers to advance in this field they are passionate about and become integral members of it. Many providers often progress in their careers, eventually taking on roles as directors or coordinators in Child and Youth Programs. They make changes!

Since providers are small business owners, they make the changes we often need to see in the development of this field. They are actively involved in addressing the needs of children and families. Providers wear many hats – they are the front desk, janitor, chef, teacher, nurse, bookkeeper, director, and, at the end of the day, they are still spouses and parents. When they have completed their time with FCC, they leave a significant impact not only on the children but also on their families.

Childcare is a huge piece of the budget for most families. FCC providers acknowledge this and actively support the families seeking their services in applying for subsidies. Subsidy is a program run by AF Services Center that not only takes care of a portion of full time, before/after care, and

weekly care fees but also supports the extras the FCC does. Since this is a Joint Base, we have the privilege of supporting all service branches with several programs or extras. We have a wonderful website developed by AF Services Center to explain those programs, dafchildandyouth.com.

Under Expanded Child Care there are several options for care types that may benefit our military families if they apply and are approved for them. The family would need to reach out to the Community Child Care Coordinator for the installation to apply. Services reviews the information sent to them and make a decision.

Several of our providers have a passion to fill the needs for those programs.
