Get to know the 87FSS Commander

We sat down with Lt Col Joseph McIntosh of the 87th Force Support Squadron for a little one-on-one. What better way to spotlight the members of the FSS than to start from the top?

Favorite aspect of the FSS?

Trick question, I don’t get to have a favorite. I love all aspects of the FSS and the support we provide to JBMDL. It’s amazing to see what our professionals do everyday in a no-fail environment.

Any interesting previous jobs?

I have been lucky to spend most of my career at base level and have been able to grow up in the FSS at all levels. Every job has had its high points and low points, just try to make the most of every assignment!

Hometown:

Rockbridge Baths, VA; small town just north of Roanoke.

What do you miss most?

I miss the farm I grew up on and the tight knit community. It’s true what they say in that you don’t appreciate what you have until it’s gone.

How would you describe your high school self?

I would say that I didn’t fall into a specific social group, I liked to, and was able, to fit in just about everywhere. Was also really busy with 3 jobs, so didn’t have a super busy social life.

Family:

Brittany is my wife of 10 years. We have one boy, Aidan, who will be 9 in January.

Do you have any pets?

We have 2 dogs – Skyy, an Australian Cattle Dog, and Cedrick, a Border Collie.

What is a hobby you enjoy year-round?

My favorite hobby by far is golf and I have learned to play yearround, even when the weather isn’t agreeable. Other hobbies are hiking/camping and pickleball has become a new obsession. Basically like to be outdoors as much as possible.

What do you like to do to keep busy in the fall and winter months?

These are my favorite times of year to camp. Also like to go fishing and hunting when I can get away.

Best things to do in/around NJ?

Best things to do are all the fantastic golf courses around. Fun fact the number one golf course in the United States is in New Jersey (although it’s super exclusive and private). My favorite thing about the location is you can go an hour or two in every direction and do just about anything you want.

Unique fact about yourself:

I am the oldest of 4 sisters (37, 27, 26, 13) & 1 brother (11). Another fun fact is I have visited every state in the U.S. except Alaska (it’s on my to-do list).

Last but not least, what FSS Fall/Winter activities are you most looking forward to this year?

I always like to do a shameless plug for our Outdoor Recreation (ODR) programs. I’m super jealous of our programmers and think they have the best job in the Air Force. Our trips are fantastic and offer an opportunity for folks to try new things and not have to go through all of the stress of planning or logistics.

Pro-Tip

The biggest pro-tip I can offer is to schedule an appointment for best results with customer service. While we do offer walk-ins on Thursdays from 12:00pm-3:30pm, this does not guarantee that they will be seen. Numerous patrons show up on these days and the kiosk will usually fill up by 12:30pm.

Next major pro-tip is to schedule an appointment to renew your ID card 60-90 days in advance. We serve the whole tri-state area so slots fill up quickly!

For our service members, make sure that you have everything completed in terms of your contract being extended or simply reenlisting, so that you can get your ID renewed reflecting a new date of separation. Do not wait until last minute to start the reenlistment or extension process!

Pro-Tip

Our programs change rapidly. Always check with your CSS or MPF for the most up to date information!

As soon as you receive a notification of assignment, get your documents in order and start the process. We process over 5,000 assignments a year; waiting until the last minute would not be wise.

If you have dependents and have an assignment, start your initial Travel Screening Clearance ASAP! This process can take up to 60 days. Assignments cannot create orders until dependents are cleared.

If you have an assignment, you must attend the initial Assignments Briefing every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at 2:00pm held at MPF (Bldg. 2916 Falcon Lane, Room 9).

Pro-Tip

Take some time to regularly review your records. This will be a huge benefit when it comes to promotions, evaluation closeouts, assignments, and other potential career opportunities.

Keep a copy of everything! Save it to your computer, print out hard copies for safekeeping, etc. A lot of these systems can be tricky at times and you never know when systems can crash or documents may not be available.

RUTGERS-CAMDEN ALUMNA EXEMPLIFIES UNIVERSITY'S TO VETERANS COMMITMENT

Rutgers University–Camden alumna Tina Mikes’s work on behalf of fellow veterans is not a job so much as a calling. As a field supervisor for the nonprofit Soldier On, Mikes connects veterans with housing and health care resources. The Burlington County resident, who earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work, extracts joy from helping those with whom she has an unspoken connection.

“With us veterans, there’s an understanding that we have with other veterans,” Mikes said. “We have that bond. It's just something special.”

Mikes’s journey to Rutgers–Camden is even more remarkable considering she dropped out of high school in 10th grade. She earned her GED and enlisted in the United States Army at age 20. Mikes was stationed in Korea and Germany as a signal system support specialist, assisting with communication equipment such as satellites, tactical radio, and local access network lines so that troops could stay informed in the field.

After three years of service, Mikes returned home, enrolling in the social work program at the university because of its proximity and reputation.

Rutgers–Camden, where she coordinated trips to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Community Living Center in Philadelphia and raised money for the university’s Jeremy Kane and Joshua Piccoli Memorial Scholarships. “I met a lot of people there who are still friends to this day; it's a great group of people,” said Mikes, who counted Piccoli among her closest friends.

“Tina embodies the incredible contributions made by student veterans at Rutgers–Camden,” said Rutgers–Camden Chancellor Antonio D. Tillis. “I am delighted that her degrees have allowed her to further her commitment to helping her fellow veterans.”

On campus, Mikes served as secretary of the organization Student Veterans at

Mikes also worked in the university’s Office of Military and Veteran Affairs. It was there that Mikes first learned about Soldier On. Mikes interviewed there and was later offered a role. She has worked there ever since.

Mikes pursued her master’s degree in social work while working full time and raising two children. A single mom, she pointed to a “huge support system” within the university.

“Rediscovering that camaraderie you used to have in the military through a veteran group on campus really is invaluable,” Mikes said. “It includes friends that I met along the way in the Veterans Affairs office.”

Mikes is now the proud mother of a U.S. Navy officer and enjoys her work more than ever.

“When you hear somebody say they really appreciate everything you've done for them or they don't know how they would have done it without you—I wouldn't change it for anything,” Mikes said.

Looking Back on 2024

A WINNING PLAY

Retired NFL Star Kevin Johnson Acquires Johnson Ford in Burlington, NJ

In a move that blends athletic success with business ambition, retired NFL player Kevin Johnson has purchased Johnson Ford in Burlington, NJ. Johnson, whose dynamic career on the football field was defined by leadership and perseverance, is now bringing that same energy and vision to the local automotive industry. With the support of his General Manager, JR Battreall—whose father is a retired Air Force Colonel— and his wife, Dealership Performance Manager, Jamie Hart Battreall this acquisition marks a new era for the dealership, highlighting a commitment to excellence and community. JR and Jamie bring a combined 60 years of automotive experience with a focus on community and customer service.

From the Gridiron to the Showroom

Kevin Johnson's football career showcased his ability to lead, inspire, and deliver results under pressure. Now, with his acquisition of Johnson Ford (formerly Lucas Ford), those skills are translating seamlessly into the business world. Johnson has always been a strategist—whether reading defenses on the field or now navigating the automotive industry, his competitive drive and passion for success remain at the forefront of his leadership style.

Despite not having a military background himself, Johnson understands the values of discipline, teamwork, and community service. His close connection with JR and Jamie, brings a unique military connection to the leadership team at Johnson Ford. This blend of backgrounds—sports, business, and military—creates a well-rounded and dynamic team that’s poised for success. JR was raised on the Joint Base and still lives about a mile away. He has fond memories of his time there. Having a father who was the commander of the 21st Air Command lends to some crazy stories and lifelong friendships.

Honoring Tradition, Building for the Future

Johnson Ford has long been a fixture in Burlington, known for its commitment to quality vehicles and customer service. Under Johnson’s ownership, the dealership will continue its tradition of reliability while modernizing its offerings and expanding its reach. Johnson is focused on enhancing the customer experience, improving operational efficiency, and deepening community ties.

In partnership with JR and Jamie, Johnson aims to honor the dealership’s roots while driving it forward. Battreall’s own connection to military service brings a sense of duty and integrity to the leadership team. Together, Johnson and Battreall plan to introduce veteran-focused initiatives, ensuring that Johnson Ford not only thrives as a business but also gives back to those who have served.

A Strategic Game Plan for Growth

Just as he approached each game with a strategy, Kevin Johnson is laying out a thoughtful plan for growth at Johnson Ford. His vision includes expanding the dealership’s digital presence, adopting cutting-edge automotive technologies, and exploring opportunities to offer more eco-friendly vehicles, such as electric and hybrid models.

The introduction of veteran-focused programs will also be a priority. By working closely with JR, Johnson aims to build partnerships with military and veteran organizations, offer special discounts to active-duty service members, and create job opportunities for veterans. This community-driven approach highlights Johnson’s commitment to making the dealership a cornerstone of both business and local service. Johnson Ford currently employs a student ROTC member, retired veterans and will be joining the Burlington County Military Affairs organization.

A Team-Oriented Approach

While Kevin Johnson brings his football leadership skills to the business world, it’s the partnership with JR and Jamie that completes the winning team. Battreall’s leadership and operational experience complement Johnson’s vision, ensuring that the dealership runs smoothly and efficiently. With Battreall’s father’s military legacy adding a touch of discipline and respect for service, Johnson Ford is not only a business venture but a symbol of teamwork and shared values.

The acquisition signals an exciting future for the Burlington dealership. Together, they are combining athletic prowess, business acumen, and a deep respect for military service into a strategy for success. As Johnson Ford enters this new era, it will remain committed to the community, offering quality service, and honoring those who serve, while striving to be a leader in the automotive industry.
