It takes a gallon of water to grow

ONE SINGLE ALMOND our water supply. And in some cases it is—just ask homeowners in New River. But many new housing developments are replacing farmland, which can result in a significant decrease in water usage per acre. Although swimming pools certainly require a large quantity of water, the water usage to maintain a 10,000 gallon pool is far less than for the same size piece of land covered with grass. Car washes are an easy target when it comes to water usage, but they can actually use less water than a hose left running on your driveway while you’re soaping up your F-150. And some car washes use recycled water to help reduce water consumption, not to mention their operational costs. When considering the story-behind-the-story for water use, we realize there are no culprits—only consumers. We all need it, we all use it. And with advancing technologies that include things like high-efficiency washing machines and industrial uses of reclaimed water, we should be able to maintain all the hydration our lives require to tide us over until this drought is over. In the meantime, turn off that faucet while you’re brushing your teeth.

Garnishments Judge Gerald A. Williams on what you need to know about wage garnishments. I HAVE YET to meet anyone who was happy that their wages were being garnished. A garnishment is a court order that allows a percentage of your salary to go directly to someone who a court has previously concluded you need to pay. Although some garnishments are for child support, most garnishments are filed to collect on a judgment. Nearly every garnishment hearing begins with the defendant attempting either to challenge the judgment or attempting to re-litigate the judgment. This is an extremely common misunderstanding that is fueled by the mandated garnishment forms. These forms allow a defendant to check a box before a line that reads, “The judgment creditor does not have a valid judgment against me.” To make matters even worse, that

JUDGE GERALD A. WILLIAMS The justice of the peace for the North Valley Justice Court. The court’s jurisdiction includes Anthem and Desert Hills.

What Employers Need to Know About Garnishments

misleading statement is followed by two blank lines allowing the defendant to write in anything he or she desires. Those lines are there to raise defenses, which can be the proper subject of a garnishment hearing; but those issues usually do not appear in justice courts. For example, a defendant can claim that the creditor does not have a valid judgment because the judgment is from a court in another state and the spouse was not a part of that lawsuit. A defendant can also allege that a judgment is being improperly enforced against community property because it was a separate debt and none of the debt was incurred on behalf of the marital community. There may not be much that can be done to change the language of the mandated garnishment forms because they are statutory. A.R.S. § 12-1598.16. However, at least for justice courts in Maricopa County, we are likely going to add an additional warning stating that the factual basis for the judgment cannot be attacked during a garnishment hearing. The main and often only purpose of a wage garnishment hearing is for the court to determine whether, based on clear and convincing evidence, that the amount being withheld would cause “the judgment debtor or his family” to “suffer extreme economic hardship.” A.R.S. § 12-1598.10(F). If so, then the amount of the nonexempt withholding can be reduced from 25 percent to not less than 15 percent. If you want to challenge a basis for the judgment, you will need to file a motion to set aside the judgment. It will follow a process that is separate from any garnishment action.

If you receive a writ of garnishment from a court concerning one of your employees, don’t ignore it. An employer is required to complete and to file a Garnishee’s Answer with the court. If an employer fails to follow the legal requirements of a garnishment, then it can be held in contempt. A.R.S. § 121598.13(B). Possible penalties for the employer include being held responsible for the employee’s debt, additional attorney’s fees, and court costs. An employer should not forward any funds to the creditor until it receives an Order of Continuing Lien from the court. If the garnishment is completed or is discharged, then the employer must return any withheld earnings to their employee.

DAVID BOWEN David has been married for over 20 years and is the father of three girls. He has a local radio program and pastors Standing Stones Community Church.

“I Do”

Pastor David Bowen dives in to marriage traditions. By David Bowen

FEBRUARY IS known as the month for love. Love leads to marriages. The wedding ceremony has very deep roots and traditions that go far beyond TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress. WHY IS THERE A GROOM’S SIDE AND A BRIDE’S SIDE? Going back to ancient times, it was not uncommon for a father to offer one of his daughters as a peace offering to resolve a war between families. To eliminate any conflict during the ceremony, the two families would sit on opposite sides of the room. WHY DOES DAD WALK HIS DAUGHTER DOWN THE AISLE? The bride is walked down the aisle on her father’s left side. Why? This was so that the dad’s fighting hand would be free to pull out his sword and defend the bride, keeping her safe from harm. WHY IS WHITE THE COLOR OF THE WEDDING DRESS? Most say it’s because white is the symbol of purity, which it is. However, in ancient times, many brides had only one best dress and naturally were married in that dress. It was not uncommon for brides to be married in dark colors, even black. The white wedding gown was a luxury for only the rich. Because it was so hard to keep clean, white was not a practical color for someone of common means. The color of choice was often blue. If one could not afford a blue dress they would wear a blue ribbon, thus the modern day saying, “something blue…”

WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF THE BRIDESMAID’S DRESS? Originally the idea was to dress the bridesmaid or bridesmaids exactly as the bride. This was designed to protect the bride from anyone who would want to do her harm. WHY DOES THE BRIDE WEAR A VEIL? In an arranged marriage, which was very common, the veil keeps the groom from seeing his bride until after the ceremony. One can argue that this was a sign of purity, or it was a sign of deceit so the groom wouldn’t change his mind. IN THE VOWS, WHY IS THE GROOM ASKED, “DO YOU TAKE THIS WOMAN…? There was a day when it was common for a single man to enter the town or village and literally choose a bride by picking her up and taking her back to his father’s house. He would literally take the woman. That would begin the courtship period in which the man would begin adding on to his father’s house so he and his bride would have a place to live. She would then go back to her father’s house and wait for her husband to come “take” her once again. WHY DOES THE CEREMONY END WITH A KISS? The kiss represented a bond that literally sealed your contract. The kiss is the first moment after your vows that you are united as husband and wife. It’s a much more tender moment today than in ancient times. There was a time when the kiss would signal the wedding guests to rush the bride and rip off a piece of her dress, which was considered a piece of good luck. WHERE DID THE HONEYMOON ORIGINATE? Traditionally the bride and groom would have an extended period of time for privacy. The most common calendar was a lunar calendar, which is based off the moon. As for the honey, during this time of separation the couple would be brought mead, which is a honeybased alcoholic drink. Thus the “honey” (mead) and the “moon” (cycle) was established. SHOW THOSE YOU CHERISH JUST HOW MUCH YOU ADORE THEM WITH THESE LOVE-THEMED CRAFTS. By Shannon Fisher Photos by Shannon Fisher Photography

Tie-dye Heart s

Tie-dye coffee filter hearts are an easy way to show your love. Start with some coffee filters and fold them all in half. Draw a heart shape on the folded filter, cut along the line, and open to see the heart shape. Now place the filter heart on a marker safe surface. We used a paper plate. Next, color the heart with marker spots. This is easy for even toddlers to do since they can just scribble all over the heart. After you’re done, drip water on the hearts to make the tie-dye effect. Allow the hearts to dry and then hang as decorations. You can also use them for cards or attach them to a canvas or board with clear glue.

Love Notes

Love notes or affirmations are a quick and easy craft to show someone you care. Start with colored sticky notes. Write something special on each sticky note. You can write something as simple as, “I love you!” Continue by writing heartfelt words on each sticky note. Place them on a mirror or wall area in the shape of a heart. We used a pad of sticky notes for a small heart. You can even add a new note each day as a countdown to Valentine’s Day. This is sure to make someone feel special.

Heart Garland

Another easy Valentine’s craft that can be used as holiday décor is a heart garland. Use 8-inch by 12-inch standard cardstock in any color of your choice. Cut the paper into half-inch strips. Fold all the strips in half. Next, stack one folded piece to another piece, lines up at the seams and use your stapler to staple the bottom of two strips together. Fold down the strips to a heart shape and continue stapling the bottom of the heart to the next strip until you have the length you want. You can add messages on the sides of the hearts as well. Use a ribbon or string to hang the garland up as a decoration or use as a countdown to a special day.

Start with layers and a unique garnish to create your gorgeous table. Drape your table with a simple white tablecloth, add a second layer of sheer pink organza, and finish it with a burlap runner. Garnish your table with seeded eucalyptus and add some stock flowers throughout. They are a fraction of the price of roses and last longer. Voilà, romance is in the air.

2

Create your very own kissing booth! Making this kissing booth the focal point of your table couldn’t be easier. Place two crates together that you purchase from any craft store and hot glue two 36” balsa wood sticks to the sides. Tape a Mylar “Love” balloon to the balsa wood to create your signage. Get out your nickels, “Kisses 5¢!”

3

Arrange yummy treats, like Hershey kisses and dark chocolate heart cookies, in apothecary jars and decorative glass bowls. Add a splash of color by tying colored ribbon around the jars. These small details make your Valentine’s Day table sweet and stylish.

4

Spoil your sweeties with adorable stemless wine glasses bubbling with sparkling raspberry lemonade. Add fresh raspberries topped with a rustic straw and heart embellishment. Simple and yummy.

Bake a naked cake that’s effortlessly chic. I’m gonna let you in on a little secret on how I make my cakes look like a professional baked them. I always make a naked cake; they feature exposed layers with a minimal amount of frosting. I use a box cake mix and frosting from the store. The other secret is having these tools on hand: a wire cutter so all of your layers are even and a frosting knife to make frosting application easy. No need to stress over crumbs when you’re frosting, that’s the look you’re going for. Trust me.

Echo Sushi Local Asian restaurant offers a culinary twist on sushi.

A FEW DOORS over from Albertsons in the shopping center on the corner of North Valley Parkway and the Carefree Highway is Echo Sushi, one of the North Valley’s newest restaurants. The menu includes many items that you’d expect to find on a sushi menu, as well as a few dishes that have a creative Asian twist. The first thing you’ll hear as you walk through the door is a warm greeting from a server or sushi chef. Then, you’ll notice the sushi bar takes up a small section of the dining room but is raised up so that you can survey the entire restaurant from one of the high seats surrounding the bar. Upon sitting down, we were delighted to see many options available for dinner, but we were happy to notice Echo Sushi offers a number of lunch options also. We ordered two sushi rolls as well as two entrée items. We’d hoped the sushi would come out prior to the entrées, but the kitchen was just as efficient as the sushi bar and they arrived nearly at the same time. Of note, the restaurant uses black rice with the sushi and entrées. Black rice is similar to brown rice, but is more nutritious. The black rice has the same antioxidants that can be found in blueberries and blackberries. Our first sushi roll was the Hawaiian roll ($13). This is a traditional California roll but with the aforementioned black rice with slices of avocado and bluefin tuna placed delicately across the top. The black rice isn’t as soft as traditional white sushi rice, but its rich flavor works well with sushi rolls. Meanwhile, the bluefin tuna was a magnificent cut of fish with a clean flavor. The next roll was the chicken teriyaki roll ($11). This roll is similar to a California roll, but with a slice of teriyaki chicken inside. It’s then drizzled with sweet eel sauce. While the roll was very tasty, it was hard to get much of the teriyaki chicken flavor over the eel sauce. Also, there wasn't much chicken inside. While still a good roll, you may be better served to choose one of the others on the menu such as the lemon roll. The first entrée that we had was the Korean bulgogi plate ($13). I liken it to a bento box, but on a plate. It comes with a scoop of black rice, two pot stickers, an Asian dressed salad, and sliced bulgogi meat over sautéed vegetables. The dish includes a cup of miso soup. The meat is thinly sliced and tender, but might have been helped with a serving of

PUCKER UP FOR THESE SECRETS TO A PERFECT POUT. By Elizabeth Hausman

IF YOU’VE EVER dreamt about having full voluptuous lips but feared you’d wind up looking like a duck, now is the time you may want to reconsider doing something about it. As technology, training, and injection techniques improve, there are now options available that deliver a smooth, natural look and feel. If you’re thinking about augmenting your lips, here are 10 tips you should consider before undergoing treatment. • Lip injection with dermal fillers is an art. Each injector will have a different approach when it comes to their injection style or technique.

40 || 85085MAGAZINE.com || FEBRUARY 2018

The best advice is to ask around and find an injector who specializes in natural appearing results. Also, a referral from someone who has had it done and who was pleased with the outcome is another great way to find an injector. • There are lots of different options when it comes to dermal filler choices and injectors, each have their own personal favorites. The fillers with the highest safety profile are hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Volbella. A nice feature of HA fillers are that

they are completely reversible. So, if for some reason you don’t love your results, your injector can inject an enzyme to dissolve the filler. • Different fillers have different durations of efficacy. Most HA fillers last between five to seven months but the newest filler Volbella has been shown to have the longest duration with the manufacturer claiming clinical results of up to 12 months. • It’s a relatively quick and painless procedure. Fit Together How to keep kids—and the entire family—active all year long. By Kim Miller and Shannon Dougherty Photo by 7713 Photography

WHEN YOU INSTILL active behavior from a young age children, grow up with a natural inclination to move their bodies. With the increase of accessible technology, kids are easily able to become sedentary, which overtime poses risks to their health and well-being. Keep kids active all year long using these ideas the whole family will enjoy.

/

MAKE A GAME LIST

Create a game list and include things such as monkey in the middle, hop scotch, pass the soccer ball, hide and seek, tag, and red light/ green light. These backyard games are great for developing coordination and memory and will have your child moving and laughing in no time. Plus, you’ll create happy family memories and role model positive healthy behavior.

Tuesdays: Alternate 10 jumping jacks and dribble a basketball 20 times. Wednesdays: Play catch with a Frisbee. Thursdays: Get outside and create challenges for your kids. Try frog jumps, skipping races, and running backwards across the yard. Fridays: Have a dance party. Turn up the music and shake it! Saturdays: Plant a garden or do yard work.

/

HEAD OUTDOORS

“Take a family adventure on your bike through your neighborhood or go on a gentle nature walk,” suggests Sue Fields, the founder and CEO of Multi Sports Journeys. “Most everyone is capable of a bike or walk and if they’re not, they probably need to start.” Bonus: Researchers at Harvard University found that fresh-air activities help counteract the negative physical and mental health impact of a sedentary, indoor lifestyle. Involve your kids and let them choose which outdoor activities your family will tackle each week.

PLOT EXERCISE COURSES

Mondays: Take a family walk.

Sundays: Take a bike ride or hike.

Movement makes a huge difference in kids both physically and mentally. Start when they are young to create lifelong positive habits. Have fun with it. Exercise is a lifestyle.

/

Create your own exercise obstacle course using household supplies. Use soup cans in place of dumbbells, a stepping stool for step exercises, a broom to hop back and forth over, and a coffee table for push-ups or triceps dips. Show your children that at any time and anywhere, they can do a workout. You don’t need to spend countless hours in a gym to be healthy and get results.

/

CREATE AN ACTIVITY CHART

As a family, create a plan to exercise. Make a chart for every day of the week and designate an exercise to check off when completed. For example:
