M + V: THIS IS WHO YOU USED TO BE

by Mia Cruz and Vianca Cruz M: Dear Me at 13, you seem to not grasp it. You seem to not grasp the fact that not everyone likes you.

You humbled yourself.

You revealed too much V: Dear Me at 11, you were desperate, but for what?

Friends? The ability to socialize? That your oldfashioned Mexican mother would understand your feelings?

M: Dear Me at 13, you were so desperate for attention You were so blind, and I don’t mean blind as in you couldn’t see, I mean blind as in not seeing how bad you hurt her V: Dear Me at 11, you are beginning to rebel, going through an awkward phase M: I mean blind as in not noticing that he wasn’t the one

V: Dear Me at 11, Doing small things like painting your nails black, or writing “tampons should be free” on the tampon dispenser in the school bathroom M: I mean blind as in ignoring what other people had to say V: your mom was asking you what was going on, asking if you were okay. But not in the motherly way you wanted it to be. More like, “what are you drawing and what does it mean?” Or, “God can help you solve anything, god is always the answer.”

M: You were just a selfish little kid who didn’t know anything.

One thing that was good, was that you were confident, but that was good for nothing.

V: you wanted to be alone.

Untouched. You realized, that men started to peek over at underaged girls, as soon as they started to show any skin. When your mom saw a man preying on a group of young girls. She said, “it’s the way they dress”. You being surprised, that your own mother would say such a horrid thing.

M + V: THIS IS WHO YOU WILL BECOME M: Dear Me at 19 Maybe you’re out partying V: Dear Me at age 25 Maybe you’re living in an RV, or maybe even homeless.

Eating canned beans; because you miss the way your now dead mother would cook them. The difference is strong, her beans are made with pride and determination, knowing her beans taste immaculate.

M: Dear Me at 19, Maybe you’re in London already, or studying in your dorm room huddled up in your bed.

V: Dear Me at 65, Maybe you’re living in the old abandoned house down the street. The neighborhood kids claim you’re a witch. The parents cover their kids eyes and say “be careful, she’ll curse you” as you walk by.

But you won’t care. You won’t deny.

M: Dear Me at 27, Maybe you’re still in Brooklyn where the air smells of wet

grass and cigarette smoke. Or maybe you’re in the streets of Paris with your “love”.

V: Dear Me at 65 Your hair is black with a few gray hairs here and there. Every Sunday you go to the market to buy cold canned beans, in memory of your long gone mother, and bake banana bread in memory of your deceased father.

M: Dear me at 30, You are strong and independent, you are confident and healthy. You are probably at home with your husband and struggling to remember your childhood.

V: Dear me at 45, You are sipping red wine on the window of your huge apartment in New York. The beans are cooking and smell scrumptious.

M + V: THIS IS WHO YOU ARE RIGHT NOW M: Dear Mia Cruz, V: Dear Vianca Cruz, M: You are okay.

V: You are bored M: You are average.

You are a normal human being that you might see walking down the street.

V: You wish you could do more M: Or not

V: But I can’t help but wonder If I stopped believing what she believes, I would be free M: I don’t have much to say except that you are you.

V: And that’s enough.

M + V: You are you and that’s enough.

V: But you know your mother would pull you by your hairs if she knew what you were thinking. Or what you meant.

M: You have some peculiar thoughts.

You talk a lot.

But that’s okay.

I think.

M + V: ESTE ES LO QUE ERAS por Mia Cruz y Vianca Cruz M: Querido yo a los 13, parece que no lo captas. Parece no comprender el hecho de que no le agradas a todo el mundo.

Te humillaste.

Revelaste demasiado V: Querido yo a los 11, estabas desesperado, pero ¿por qué? ¿Amigos? ¿La capacidad de socializar? ¿Que tu anticuada madre mexicana entendería tus sentimientos?

M: Querido yo a los 13, estabas tan desesperado por llamar la atención.

Eras tan ciego, y no me refiero a ciego como si no pudieras ver, Me refiero ciego como en no ver lo mal que la lastimaste V: Querido, a los 11, estás empezando a rebelarte, atravesar una fase incómoda.

M: Me refiero a ciego como al no darse cuenta de que él no era el indicado.

V: Querido a los 11, hacer cosas pequeñas como pintarse las uñas de negro o escribir “los tampones deben

ser gratis” en el dispensador de tampones en el baño de la escuela.

M: Me refiero a ciego como ignorando lo que otras personas tienen que decir.

V: tu mamá te estaba preguntando qué estaba pasando, preguntando si estabas bien. Pero no de la manera maternal que querías que fuera. Más como, “¿qué estás dibujando y qué significa?” O, “Dios puede ayudarte a resolver cualquier cosa, Dios siempre es la respuesta.”

M: Eras solo un niño egoísta que no sabía nada. Una cosa que era buena, era que tenías confianza, pero eso no sirvió para nada.

V: querías estar solo. Sin tocar.

Te diste cuenta de que los hombres empezaron a mirar a las chicas menores de edad, tan pronto como empezaron a mostrar algo de piel. Cuando tu mamá vio a un hombre atacando a un grupo de chicas jóvenes. Ella dijo, “Es la forma en que se visten.” Te sorprende que tu propia madre dijera algo tan horrible.

V: Estas aburrido M: Eres promedio. Eres un ser humano normal al que podrías ver caminando por la calle.

V: Desearías poder hacer más M: O no

V: Pero sabes que tu madre te agarraría de los pelos si supiera lo que estás pensando. O lo que quisiste decir.

M: Tiene algunos pensamientos peculiares.

Hablas demasiado.

Pero eso está bien.

Creo.

V: Pero no puedo evitar preguntarme si dejara de creer lo que ella cree, sería libre M: No tengo mucho que decir excepto que eres tú.

V: Y eso es suficiente.

M + V: Tú eres tú y eso es suficiente.

Beauty Within Itself

by Kiera Foster, age 16 *I’m using this piece as a form of reality because it’s how I view myself* She is a beautiful small town.

Embodies simplicity but with an edge.

Spring-like weather all year-round with occasionally heavy thunderstorms.

Streets smell heavenly as if fresh baked goods are being made everywhere you turn.

This town only carries the best individuals who it knows will bring positivity to the area. Negativity and belittlement are not allowed unless they are for the benefit of someone else.

She is the town that you escape to when you need to relax and unwind.

Just to kick up your feet in the sunshine, but after that well-needed getaway, a sudden realization strikes you like a car crash and you know what needs to be done for a better change. She may sound like a perfect town, but she is far from it, her history and mantras make her that gravitating town you just want to know more about or reside in as long as possible.

La belleza dentro de sí misma por Kiera Foster, 16 años *Estoy usando esta pieza como una forma de realidad, porque así es como me veo a mí mismo Ella es una hermosa ciudad pequeña.

Encarna la simplicidad pero con un toque.

Clima primaveral todo el año con tormentas eléctricas fuertes ocasionalmente.

Las calles huelen divinamente como si se estuvieran preparando productos recién horneados en todas partes.

Esta ciudad solo cuenta con las mejores personas que sabe que traerán positividad a la zona. La negatividad y el menosprecio no están permitidos a menos que sean en beneficio de otra persona.

Ella es la ciudad a la que te escapas cuando necesitas relajarte y descansar.

Solo para poner los pies en alto bajo el sol, pero después de esa escapada tan necesaria, una comprensión repentina te golpea como un accidente de automóvil, y sabes lo que hay que hacer para un mejor cambio.

Puede sonar como una ciudad perfecta, pero está lejos de serlo, su historia y mantras la convierten en esa ciudad gravitas hacia, de la que solo quieres saber más o vivir el mayor tiempo posible.

Memory

by Kiera Foster, age 16 I’m not an adrenaline junkie like my cousins, but somehow I end up doing ridiculous things or going on insane rides. The moment I’m about to describe may not be considered something to feel brave about, but it’s brave to me. I’m not a fan of roller coasters since I think they’re dangerous, but one day about two summers ago, I decided to step out of my comfort zone. My cousins woke me up very early in the morning so that we could go to Six Flags. Once we got there, one of my cousins somehow managed to convince me to go on the Green Lantern, where you’re standing up instead of the usual sitting position. Once I got on the ride and was placed on the end seat, all I could think about was how I was going to die and I didn’t even speak to my mother today. The whole time on the ride my eyes were closed, hands clenched on the handle, praying to get off this ride safely.

Overall, I believe that was my bravest moment, since I don’t encounter situations where I need to be brave too often.

Memoria por Kiera Foster, 16 años No soy un adicto a la adrenalina como mis primos, pero de alguna manera termino haciendo cosas ridículas o dando vueltas locas. El momento que voy a describir puede que no se considere valiente, pero es valiente para mí. No soy fanático de las montañas rusas porque creo que son peligrosas, pero un día, hace dos veranos, decidí salir de mi zona de confort. Mis primos me despertaron muy temprano para que pudiéramos ir a Six Flags. Una vez que llegamos allí, uno de mis primos logró convencerme de ir al Green Lantern, donde estás de pie en lugar de la posición sentada. Una vez que me subí al vehículo y me colocaron en el asiento del extremo, todo lo que podía pensar era cómo iba a morir y ni siquiera hablé con mi madre hoy. Durante todo el tiempo que estuve en el viaje, mis ojos estaban cerrados, las manos apretadas en el mango, rezando para salir de este viaje de manera segura. En general, creo que fue mi momento más valiente, ya que no me encuentro con situaciones en las que deba ser valiente con demasiada frecuencia.

The Sunset

by Jesus Rivera, age 15 As the sun sets, we tend to see a fusion of colors, yellow and orange all mixed together on the horizon. When the sun goes down, it signifies that our day is over, and it is time to rest. As the sun has gone away, the moon has appeared along with numerous stars, all of them shining so bright along with the cloud morphing into weird shapes I can’t explain.

El ocaso por Jesus Rivera, años 15 A la puesta del sol, vemos una fusión de colores, amarillos y anaranjados mezclados juntos en el horizonte. A la puesta del sol, significa que nuestro día acaba, y es hora de descansar. Cuando el sol se va, la luna aparece con numerosas estrellas, todas brillando fuertemente al conjunto de una nube que cambia de figuras que no puedo explicar.

A Place Worth Being

by Elma Radoncic, age 17 A place that describes me: New York City. I wouldn’t say this just because I live here, but because it describes my brain activity.

New York City is known as the city that never sleeps. People are running around trying to get to work, to get some lunch, and to pick their children up from school. People hustle and people work nonstop, and that’s what my brain does, essentially. But instead of working the long hours a normal brain works (if there is such a thing), my brain works overtime and over the overtime. My thoughts run in circles all day, jumping from one topic to the next—new ideas, old memories, learning the French language, how the response to stimuli works, and what to wear. I lay in bed staring at the wall into nothing, distracted by the noise of my brain. But then I say, “Shh, shh,” and my brain goes into another place, a place where all you hear and all you know are the waves crashing onto the sand, the slight breeze that makes you snuggle up into your sweater, and the sight of the bright colors from the sunset.

Un lugar digno de estar por Elma Radoncic, 17 años Un lugar que me describe: la ciudad de Nueva York.

No diría esto solo porque vivo aquí, sino porque describe mi actividad cerebral.

La ciudad de Nueva York es conocida como la ciudad que nunca duerme. La gente corre de un lado para otro tratando de llegar al trabajo, almorzar y recoger a sus hijos de la escuela. La gente se apresura y la gente trabaja sin parar, y eso es lo que hace mi cerebro, esencialmente.

Pero en lugar de trabajar las largas horas que trabaja un cerebro normal (si existe tal cosa), mi cerebro trabaja horas extras y depues mas horas extras. Mis pensamientos corren en círculos todo el día, saltando de un tema a otro: nuevas ideas, viejos recuerdos, aprender el idioma francés, cómo funciona la respuesta a los estímulos y qué ponerme. Me acuesto en la cama mirando la pared hacia la nada, distraída por el ruido de mi cerebro.

Pero luego digo, “Shh, shh”, y mi cerebro va a otro lugar, un lugar donde todo lo que escuchas y todo lo que sabes son las olas rompiendo en la arena, la brisa que te hace acurrucarte en tu suéter, y la vista de los colores brillantes del atardecer.

Obsession

by Elma Radoncic, age 17 Obsession: there are plenty of definitions for it. I believe to be obsessed is to crave for more of what you had or what you experienced, because it made you feel whole and it gave you hope. The only person who does that for me is my momma. She is beautiful and so graceful. When she is all dolled up, she looks into the mirror and dances with a smile on her face. She is innocent and as joyful as a five-year-old girl who dreams of fairy tales at night. She still sees dreams and smells every flower she passes by. She is radiant and saturated every day of her life. She wears yellow and blasts music in the car with the windows down. She is caring and loving to every person around her. She buys her mom gifts for International Women’s Day so she can feel like a princess. She surprised my cousin when she graduated with flowers and cupcakes. She makes our favorite dish when we are having a hard day. She knows everything I don’t.

She knows the right medication to give us and all the pilgrim times medication that will help heal our wounds. She is youthful and fun. She jokes around with any person younger than her or close to her to push their buttons jokingly and make conversation. She laughs extremely loud, not just any loud laugh but a contagious one. The kind that even if you’re so angry at her, you can’t help but smile when you hear her laugh. She is amazed by little accomplishments.

She tries her best to speak English, but it’s nothing like reading it, she says. Every time she trips over a word, she looks over her shoulder to me hoping for some help. I cave in everytime. She is courageous and hardworking. She is proud. She is a mother, a wife, a sister, a daughter, a cousin, a friend. I am proud to call her mother.

Obsesión por Elma Radoncic, 17 años Obsesión: hay muchas definiciones. Creo que estar obsesionado es anhelar más de lo que tuviste o de lo que experimentaste, porque te hizo sentir completo y te dio esperanza. La única persona que hace eso por mí es mi mamá. Ella es hermosa y tan elegante. Cuando está bien arreglada, se mira al espejo y baila con una sonrisa en el rostro. Es inocente y alegre como una niña de cinco años que sueña con cuentos de hadas por la noche.

Ella todavía ve sueños y huele cada flor que pasa. Está radiante y saturada todos los días de su vida. Viste de amarillo y suena música en el coche con las ventanillas bajadas. Ella se preocupa y ama a todas las personas que la rodean. Le compra regalos a su mamá para el Día Internacional de la Mujer para ella sentirse como una princesa. Sorprendió a mi prima cuando se graduó con flores y cupcakes. Ella hace nuestro plato favorito cuando tenemos un día difícil. Ella sabe todo lo que yo no. Ella conoce la medicación adecuada para darnos y todos los medicamentos en tiempos de peregrinaje que nos ayudarán a curar nuestras heridas. Ella es joven y divertida. Ghost Lines

by Elma Radoncic, age 17 She was raised as the quiet kid. Always nicely kept, spoke only when spoken to, had perfect grades throughout all her school years and beamed a bright smile to anyone who walked by. She was nothing but purity and bliss. As she grew up into her high school years, she kept her perfect grades, her quiet manner, her seemingly natural smile. No one was ever able to notice the hours she spent perfecting those grades, that perfect smile, and her quiet manner just so the next day she can receive validation and honor for being someone’s perfect daughter or for being the perfect young lady in her culture. And through that experience, her soul turned into anger and numbness. Her soul became tired after each minute passed. She didn’t want any more validation because it lost its value. She disregarded any judgemental comment her family had made and it didn’t phase her anymore, at least she tried not to let it. She felt belittled, as if all her hard work had been for nothing.

“He was the sun and she was the moon.” I was in the kitchen when I heard my cousin say that. It was the story I told her years ago when I went to visit her in Europe when she was just a little baby—well, my little baby. I let her proceed. She blissfully said to our oldest cousin, “A perfect match. A beautifully contradicting pair. They were destined to be together.” I had been whispering under my breath alongside her voice. “Fated to love each other forever. Their only problem was that the sun and moon never share the same sky. Always so close but never close enough. Right next to each other but never together. Sometimes when he left he would catch a glimpse of her. Sometimes she would see him as she entered. But it was never enough. Never perfect. Never destined. Never fated. Never together. Never

love.” My older cousin, who was going through a rough patch in his relationship, became speechless.

And then, I turned around and said the last line, the line that was not necessarily part of the story but the one that was necessary to hear, “And only for a couple of minutes, every couple of years, they align finally to be with each other. And in the final moments together they say to each other, ‘Until next time my love’ as they say goodbye, glancing for a glimpse of each other.”

Siempre bien cuidada, solo hablaba cuando le hablaban, tenía calificaciones perfectas durante todos sus años escolares y mostraba una sonrisa brillante a cualquiera que pasaba. A Brave Moment

by Elma Radoncic, age 17 Waiting in the line holding our groceries, my mother stands right in front of me. We are next in line. I just want to pay for our groceries and leave the store. My mom and I have a long day ahead of us, but an exciting one, so all that is running through my mind right now is what we need to do. I love being productive, so checking off everything on my list is something I am truly looking forward to when I get home. The cashier calls us over. As I’m putting our groceries down on the counter, my mom and I are having a conversation in our native language.

Our minds are in la-la land until the cashier gets angry at my mother for having difficulty paying on this ineffective and useless machine sitting in front of me. I’m truly getting frustrated at this point. I try to calm the situation, so I ask him to just give her a moment. I take over the payment and packing of the groceries for my mother and tell her it’s okay. I hate big scenes like this . . . I mean, what’s wrong with this guy? I don’t have patience either but not to this extent. I am in such disbelief. As I am finishing up, he continues to disrespectfully comment on my mother’s “lack of English speaking skills.” I cannot be polite to this man anymore, and if he’s causing a scene, then I might as well do it too. I tell him, “You know, I have the right to remain silent but I don’t have the ability to, especially when you are disrespecting my mother. If you don’t like hearing our absolutely normal conversation then you can cover your ears or simply decide to walk away.

No one asked for your opinion and no one wants to hear it.” And he replies, “Of course,” with a bunch of useless words coming out of his mouth that I am not paying attention to, because at this point I am extremely close to reaching my next level of anger and I just say, “You can’t

seem to shut your mouth because then how will all the hot air escape?” I grab our groceries, allow my mother to exit first like always, and then we leave the store. But before we leave, I make sure he understands that if he ever speaks towards my mother in the way he did today, well not only will he have a serious problem with me, but with my dad as well. I know that I handled that situation well.

by Anjali Misir, age 16 “She tried to pull me in,” my grandmother told me.

After school, I’d ask my grandma to tell me stories of mermaids. (She knew quite a bit about them.) I got so lost in her words and hand gestures. They started to become part of the stories. (Part of her voice?) When she died, those memories of her began to feel like a dream.

“She tried to pull me in,” my grandmother told me.

Mermaids are the most magical beings, in my opinion. I never knew that they existed until my grandmother mentioned the word. Other kids had nursery rhymes, but I had tall tales.

I had my grandmother’s soft yet amplified voice. I had her hand gestures and wide-eyed excitement. I had her mystery and wonder.

At one point I also started to tell my own stories. One time I told her that this big white cat visited me in the school cafeteria. She knew I was making it up, but she still smiled.

I won’t share all of her stories. Just one.

One day, my grandmother was out for a walk to the Pomeroon River, the deepest river in Guyana.

“Mermaids live in black water,” she said.

She went to sit on the bridge that hovered over the Pomeroon, her feet hanging in the water.

Suddenly, she felt something yank her foot. Something was trying to pull her in! Or maybe trying to greet her.

“The tail was black and orange. It shimmered through the water,” she assured me.

The tail was a long one, so long you didn’t know where it started or ended.

My grandmother was able to get loose from the mermaid’s grip and get away, but I don’t think she was scared.

She died when I was in middle school. She got sick. She had so much faith that her body would recover, that she could go on her walkabouts after it was all over. The more I remember, the more these memories start to feel like a dream.

Somehow, you transform that negative energy into something useful. You’re thinking right now, How should I phrase this? or Does this make any sense?

Right now, you’re thinking about the color red. You see it on the shirt your mom is wearing; you see it on your phone case, and you see it on your paper. That impossibly straight margin cuts clean, and it mocks you—but why? (Like why? Did I just feel like writing that?)

Another Memory

by Anjali Misir, age 16 A couple years ago, my family went to the Cayman Islands in the summer of 2018. As we drove back to our inn, my sister noticed these old, rusty, inactive cannons lying in a green field next to the roads. We all got out of the car to take a closer look. The plaque on the cannons said, “1781 Cannons from the Wreck of the 10 Sails.”

Ten British ships had crashed into a coral reef off the east coast of the island. Six people didn’t make it; the rest were rescued by many locals.

After my sister took her last photo, I stupidly walked deeper into the ghostly field. The loud caws and cries of a single black bird filled my steps. When I retreated back to our car, three big black dogs emerged from a side house.

Their fur was wet and damp as if they were three of the dead souls that awoke from the wreck. The only thing was there wasn’t any water nearby, not enough to cover them from head to paw.

The dogs escorted us away from the field. My dad was also trying to distract them with the rental car keys, so their focus would shift. 6:00 PM.

Mientras conducíamos de regreso a nuestra posada, mi hermana notó estos cañones viejos, oxidados e inactivos, en un campo verde junto a las carreteras. Todos salimos del coche para mirar más de cerca. La placa de los cañones decía: “1781 Cañones del naufragio de las 10 velas”.

Diez barcos británicos se habían estrellado contra un arrecife de coral frente a la costa este de la isla. Seis personas no lo lograron; el resto fueron rescatados.

Después de que mi hermana tomó su última foto, caminé estúpidamente más profundamente en el campo fantasmal. Los fuertes graznidos y gritos de un solo pájaro negro llenaban mis pasos. Cuando me retiré a nuestro coche, tres grandes perros negros salieron de una casa lateral. Su pelaje estaba mojado y húmedo como si fueran tres de las almas muertas que despertaron del naufragio. I like recording things

by Anjali Misir, age 16 I’d find my grandfather upstairs jotting things down in his pocket books.

Things he would jot down included: - Dates - Time - Birthdays/celebrations - Vacation days of everyone - Medical appointments - Bank notes - Trips - What time people come in the house - Notes on who visits the house - Who was where - Mood of everyone/how they’re feeling - Where he was or what he was doing After he passed, I noticed his way of documenting everything with specific dates and times, and then my mom and sister were talking about it. I was the only one who didn’t know, but that night I wrote to my grandfather. I wrote him a letter. A quick one. For the very first time, I included a piece of writing with a time and date. I don’t remember what I did with the letter. I think I started to do this because I wanted to keep some part of him with me. But as I kept doing it, it turned into something more. It became a daily habit and something that gave me closure.

For example, when I finished a sketch or painting, it felt nice to sign my name, to sign the time and date in which I started and ended.

When you open his notebooks, you can hardly read his writing. “His writing is so fine,” my mom said.

She has the power to freeze time. She has a room she can step into whenever she wants, a portal into her very own world. While she’s in that room, time is still, and she can do whatever she wants. She enters when she wants some extra time to read, to watch shows and movies, to do homework, or to just take a break from our all too hectic reality. She never has to worry about rushing or losing time.

-“This too shall pass . . . “ Both times of hardship and joy.

Everything eventually moves along this formless stream called life whether you like it or not.

The tides are sometimes warm and comforting, slowly and kindly reaching up to your toes as you stand in front of the vast sea, enjoying the view.

However, sometimes the tides are boundless and frantic, violently crashing into your body, overwhelming you and eventually swallowing you whole.

That’s when you remember what you’ve whispered to yourself only a thousand times before. When you’re happy, take a little time to embrace the feeling, let all the emotions surge into you. When you’re upset, take a little time to reflect on it, but still let all emotions surge into you. Because when it feels like the world has come to a halt, you will know that this too shall pass.

-It’s warm. The sun’s rays are shining, making everything glow. The warmth embraces anything it reaches.

There’s a vast field of flowers of all kinds, mostly sunflowers and lilies. It serves as an entrance to the small town filled with a loving, tight-knit community.

As you walk through, you see big smiles and hear hearty laughter. The kids are running. There’s still the lingering smell of floral aroma and the new scent of freshly baked pastries.

You look out into the horizon.

The journey started with my friend and I walking down the stairs of our ten-floor school. As we skipped down the steps from the eighth floor to the seventh, a light gust of wind blew in, as the window was slightly open. It hit me that it was March, and all I could think of was spring, spring, spring.

So as we stepped out into the dawn of springtime, we made our way to the High Line—a spontaneous thought turned into our plan for the evening. It was a ten-minute walk from school, so it felt like a quick stroll. However, we walked at a slow pace, breathing in the fresh air after being stuffed in classrooms all day. There was a quiet, relaxing ambiance besetting us, with the sunlight trailing along. After reaching the High Line, I took a deep breath in, practically inhaling the air around me. It didn’t feel as good as I thought it would, but it still made me smile.

As we walked along the path, tears started welling in my eyes as I told my friend, “God, the weather is so amazing today.”

That happens a lot, the tears, whether it’s raining peacefully or it’s cloudy with the sun looming behind.

We found a nice spot to take pictures, and so we took turns posing for the camera. My outfit wasn’t particularly notable or good-looking, but I thought it would be a shame to let the sun’svglow go to waste. After our little photoshoot session, we stood at the platform, admiring the skyline and the busy people bustling around the streets of New York City.

I repeated, “The weather is so great right now.” The sun was shining down on us with the breeze blowing just enough to make my hair sway back, which made it seem like life was somehow tender and delightful as the warmth seemed to engulf me paired with the refreshing draft.

I thought to myself, “if someone were to ask me what genuine happiness is, I would describe this moment: Just standing here for a couple of hours, looking out at the skyline, embracing what nature has to offer while talking about anything and everything.” My heart felt complete and warm, and emotions of gratitude and comfort were swarming into me.

My friend and I had deep conversations ranging from who we wanted to be to how we envisioned our lives in the future.

It gave me a chance to take a step out of my bubble and to reflect on myself as if I were an outsider. I especially appreciate these moments, because oftentimes, life becomes hectic as school and other responsibilities overwhelm me. We sat down after a while, and we talked about college, family, and ourselves. It was invigorating to chat without caring about the world.

More than anything, I had wished for time to stand still and to be surrounded by the people I love the most. These are the exact instances when I think about how futile they are: the petty conflicts, stressing over little matters, and overthinking about the future. I believe nature has the power to move people. I always have this wall up, barring me from taking time to be in the moment and appreciating my existence as a whole, but it seems like the sun’s loving rays and the wistful zephyr cause this towering wall to crumble. As the world offers me this moment of vulnerability with security, in return, I face the world in my raw form, a fragile, delicate girl trying to live up to everyone’s expectations. Nature embraces what I reveal, no matter what form of myself I decide to present, and gifts me with a surge of undisturbed joy and appreciation.

The extreme rush of emotion I felt that day was all due to the weather. I felt the happiest and most content. To this day, I hold the utmost gratitude to the forces of nature as that encounter keeps me going. Honestly, I would do anything to experience that tender feeling again.

-El viaje comenzó con mi amigo y yo bajando las escaleras de nuestra escuela de diez pisos. Mientras bajábamos los escalones del octavo piso al séptimo, entró una ligera brisa de viento, ya que la ventana estaba ligeramente abierta.

My mom was arguing with me, my brother was eating with his hands (that little animal), my dad was telling dad jokes, and my sister was being annoying. The perfect afternoon. I was happily eating the shrimp and consumed about 16 of them.

After I finished, my dad asked, “Where are the tails?”

I replied with: “I ate them”.

My family was astonished and said, “What do you mean?!” They found it shocking that I had eaten the tails.

Then, they casually explained that the shrimp tails could possibly get stuck in my throat, and that I could choke.

This, for some reason, didn’t scare me at all.

To be honest, I was amused that they were shocked.

This still pops in my head at random times, like at 3:00 in the morning.

Mi familia estaba sorprendida y dijo, “a que te refieres?!” Les pareció sorprendente que me haya comido las colas. Luego, casualmente me explicaron que las colas pueden quedarse atascadas en mi garganta, y que me podía atorar. Esto no me asustaba.

A Ghost Tells Its Own Story

I tried to prove myself to everyone that I was more capable than my peers, but they always found a way to hold me down. It was as if they did that to keep themselves up. I kept trying, but eventually they broke me and I turned away from it all. I had plans to become an amazing doctor, but my life ended too soon. After high school graduation I didn’t even try to go to college, it just didn’t seem worth it. I ended up not going anywhere and staying home. My parents eventually had enough and kicked me to the curb, saying that I needed to figure out my life and find my place in the world. I didn’t last long after that, and honestly I don’t feel entirely comfortable revealing how I died. The reason I’m telling you all of this is because I need to pass on my knowledge to someone. My work could potentially save people from many diseases or even pre-existing conditions. You must fulfill what I could not.

Traté de demostrarle a todos que era más capaz que mis compañeros, pero siempre encontraban la manera de sujetarme. Era como si lo hicieran para mantenerse altos. by Mekhi Vazquez, age 17 Dear Mekhi Age 14, I hope this finds you well. If my timing is correct, then you have just been accepted to Beacon High School. Congrats, it’s great. Now I know what you are thinking (because I’m you and you’re me), and no the world hasn’t ended yet.

Well, I mean, it depends on your, or our, definition of the world ending and my future self may say otherwise, but I’ll get to that in a minute. Anyways, your first year and a half of high school are great, but be careful with your PBAs (Project Based Assessments) because they hold more than just your grades in them. You’ll know what I’m talking about when the moment comes. After that, whether the world ends is very much up to your interpretation. You see, we got this thing called the Coronavirus or COVID-19. It forces us all to go into isolation and work and do school straight from home, people die every day, and others get school-sick (which is a weird phrase I just made up and I don’t know why) and that was only 2020. Right now it’s 2021, and white supremacists have stormed the Capitol building in DC in the name of your new president Donald J. Trump. I don’t know what’s gonna come next, so far everything seems to be up in the air, and we both might get a letter from my future self with a case of the vaccine.

My advice for what’s to come is to take care of yourself, be prepared for anything that comes your way, and most importantly believe in yourself. Trust me, that faith will help you through a lot.

Obsession: Friendship

by Mekhi Vazquez, age 17 So, to start, I was entering my writing class and I got asked a question about obsession. Obsession comes in many forms, and can be about many things. My question would be why. Not why did I get this question, but why do we as humans have what we call obsession. Do I know the answer to this question? No, absolutely not, but I will keep that question for a future Google search. To address the question asked, I said that my obsession is friendship, because friends are always there for you and they give you joy and happiness, especially during dark hours. Now this may seem crazy, but it depends on one’s definition of obsession. My definition, in this case, would be something that you are always looking for and when you have it, it fills you with positive emotion. Friends are there for fun, to talk to, and just to gossip and laugh with.

When you cry they pat you on the back, when it’s your birthday they throw you a huge party, and the list goes on. Overall, they are by your side whenever you need them. I love having these relationships with people, so I guess you could call it my obsession.

To be or not to be

One option could lead to great things, and the other could lead to damnation. Each choice acts as a fork in the road, but in that scenario you can get a sense of what is to come just by looking down the line, with choices that are not options. You can’t choose one, then turn back the clock if you don’t like it. You must decide, on the spot, and then carry the choice around wherever you go.

You carry the medal or the burden, one for greatness and one for guilt.

We were grasping onto each other’s arms, and then getting people to sit on them. Then we threw people into the air and then, us being children, decided it would be a good idea to prank one of my friends.

When she was about to sit on our arms, we let go. She fell and hit the back of her head. It was funny, and I couldn’t stop laughing. (She’s still alive.)

Dreams

Working as a mind worker for an adult is tough. Finding dreams they will remember is even tougher. That’s why I went to the top dream library, located in a cemetery. Sure, they remember the nightmares, but she had a bad day and a nightmare would not be out of the ordinary. A good dream will astonish them. I walked through the aisles, finding nothing that popped out.

The librarian replied, “Sure! They are in aisle 175. We have a new release here today! Someone arrived today, a choreographer!”

“That sounds lovely!”

“This is a medium dark, fun, original flying dream!”

“I’ll take that one!” Walking back to my human, I tripped and missed. The dream shattered as I gasped. “Oh no! And they only allow one release!” I tugged my hair and groaned.

As a dream worker, we all knew the stakes. One missing dream night and then all of the imagination, all of the hard work, would be broken as the frayed barrier that kept the subconscious from the conscious would explode, causing what they call a psychotic break. Keeping the subconscious happy with dreams was the only way to prevent the quirky, and dangerous, dreams and imagination from getting tangled with reality. Two things would happen during a psychotic dream break: people would have hallucinations and have an alternate reality, or the dreams would become devastatingly literal. As a microbiologist, I don’t think that this would affect her as much, but we cannot take the chance of a psychotic breakdown.

Once I got back, I got started on a script. “Flying through the sky, black wings, secret spies . . . ”

I glanced at the clock. Almost REM! But I hadn’t filmed it! Argh! I would have to act it out in real time! “Alright! Lights, Camera, Action!”

“To the Rescue!”

“Yeaah!”

The flashes started blaring. My heart sank. I had never turned the camera on. This was bad. Really bad. A psychotic break was going to start soon. When that would start, we would all be plunged into a world of chaos and half-drawn pictures. Memories would shatter. We would escape, but everything before would be lost forever. And ever. Never again would I have the luxury of reminiscing. As a doctor, this would destroy our career. The people in the front handle that stuff.

But it’s me who’s to blame. Where do I go to stop this? Will I have to wait until the next night?

I flipped through the In-CASE-of-Emergency manual. “IN CASE OF PSYCHOTIC BREAK AND NO DREAMS, keep them asleep while you film another dream. Once the sirens stop blaring, it’s over.” It was quiet. Too quiet. The sirens went off. It was strangely peaceful. Shards of my past drifted in front of my eyes. My first cookie: shattered. My favorite song: shattered. “What am I? What was I doing? “ “Lalalala.” I danced around in circles. “______” __________ The button was pressed. All of a sudden, life slowly came back. The pieces slowly turned back into place, and I was slammed onto the floor. “Flying dream, yes, Flying Dream!”

I began making airplane noises and swooshing above the ground. Slowly, everything came back. My favorite song was The Four Seasons. My least favorite cookie flavor was Oatmeal Raisin. I worked with cells and microbes.

How big was a microbe? Was it small? How small was it?

1cm? 2mm? How small can that get? Why can I not see that?

Sueños por Aravah Chaiken, 13 años “Hola, me pueden dar un sueño volador?”

Ser un trabajador de la mente para un adulto es difícil.

Encontrar sueños de los que se acuerden es aún más difícil. Por eso es que fui a la biblioteca de arriba, dentro de un cementerio. Claro, se acuerdan de las pesadillas, pero cuando ella tuvo un mal día, una pesadilla no es fuera de lo normal. Un buen sueño les sorprendería.

Caminé por los pasillos y no encontré nada.

La bibliotecaria respondió, “¡claro! Están en el pasillo 175. ¡Tenemos nuevas hoy día! ¡Alguien llegó con un coreógrafo! ““Suena lindo!” “¡Es un sueño medio oscuro, divertido, un sueño volador original!” “¡Me llevaré ese!” En camino de regreso a mi humano, me tropecé y caí. El sueño se rompió y grite. “¡No! Y este es el único!” Me jale el pelo y gruñe.

Como todo trabajador de sueños, sabemos lo que arriesgamos. Una noche donde no se sueña puedo hacer que la imaginación, el trabajo duro, rompa la barrera débil que separa el subconsciente y la conciencia explotará, causando un colapso psicótico. Manteniendo a la subconciencia feliz con sueños es la única manera de prevenir los raros y peligrosos sueños de la imaginación en mezclarse con la realidad. Dos cosas pasarían en un colapso psicótico: las personas tendrían alucinaciones y tendrían una realidad alterna, o los sueños se convertirían en una realidad devastadora. Como ella es una microbióloga, no creo que eso la afectará mucho, pero no podemos arriesgarnos a un colapso psicótico.

Never being understood, never a moment of peace. The blinding light of advertisements, neon signs blaring. Sunglass Hut. McDonald’s Burgers. The newest Netflix flick. The beating of your heart rises and falls, waxes and wanes. Pit-patter, pit-patter pit-patter.

Cartoon characters walk your streets, walking out of the ghost Toys-R-Us a block away. Cool Batman lowering his sunglasses and winking, Minnie Mouse getting pictures from bulky cameraed tourists. The hotdog stands lining the streets, pretzels adorning their roofs. A disco ball falling in slow motion from the sky.

Millions have walked your worn cement and tar pathways, the faded white painted stripes slowly being pulled into the street underneath 10-second horn-honking yellow-green taxis.

In an awakened state for all eternity. A blessing of usefulness and work. The curse of never getting a break. The past year must have been a relief, a breath of cool air, a day of simply nothingness. Sweet Silence. Look at all the colors. A swirl of life, happiness, caffeine, and Broadway. El año pasado debió de haber sido un alivio, un suspiro de aire fresco, un día de simplemente nada. Silencio dulce. Mira todos los colores. Un remolino de vida, felicidad, cafeína, y Broadway. The Shadow

by Aravah Chaiken, age 13 It was cold, wasn’t it? Images of family and friends bloomed and then faded, like popcorn from kernels. She wished she’d said goodbye. Words were such odd things. One word could mean different things. Her thoughts drifted from friends, to family, to the Boeren Bay Shadow case. She’d narrowed down the list of suspects and the producers were on her to pick one, but something wasn’t fitting. Was it really only yesterday that she was flipping through the profiles of the most likely suspects? The homeless drummer, perpetually banging the plastic bucket outside of City Hall, reeking of cigarette smoke and shouting, “Get off my lawn” to imaginary trespassers or visiting politicians. Or the former high school teacher, Gene Finney, bald with a greasy shrub of a comb-over, fired for allegedly stealing from students although the case was never proven.

The pieces of evidence were so close to clicking. Like a jigsaw, she tried one suspect profile after another, testing to see if it fit into the evidence framework. The answer hung on the tip of her consciousness. It was in those quiet moments that she had solved her greatest cases with the FBI. The quiet blanketed her in a cocoon, allowing her to dig through the forensic file and connect each segment into a map leading her to the killer. There it is! The breakthrough within her grasp. She could feel the pieces fitting together.

So close!

Ding dong. Ding-a-ling-ee-ling. Her concentration shattered, the anger simmered. She’d left a sign on the door. Who could it possibly be? She pulled back the curtain.

All she could see was the outline of a shadow.

“Bella! Who is it?” Edna’s daughter yelled back upstairs.

“It’s Barbara.”

Of course, Barbara. Barbara can’t read. What could it

be this time? Yesterday she had interrupted to borrow an egg which she had returned five minutes later because she had forgotten that she needed butter instead.

Edna sighed. “Tell Barbara that I’m not home!”

She heard Belladonna downstairs. “Mom says that she’s not home.”

“Oh then, may I come in?”

“Hi Barbara!” I called from my office. “I’m busy right now, could you come back later?”

“Oh great,” Barbara said with mock delight. “Cookies.”

She was the neighbor who spent half her time distributing cookies in various Tupperware containers and the other half getting them back. “Why, how did you know?” Barbara laughed in a high, tinkling laugh.

Edna slammed the door suddenly hot, growling her frustration. She took a deep breath and tried to reconnect the mental lines connecting the clues, but they had vanished. The paramedic slammed the door, startling her awake. An IV tube swung above her. The metal ceiling was like a distorted mirror, she could see the paramedic’s lips moving, but she could not hear or understand the words.

It was coming back to her slowly. It was there, but it wasn’t there.

Fragments of crime scene photos pinned to her memory. Crime scene tape. Chalk outlines. Clutter and mayhem. Crumbs. Discarded Tupperware. The buzzing of the machines woke her. Her heart began beating again.

Edna lifted her head, a tiny movement that cost her strength. “Listen. The Shadow . . . ” she coughed. “I know who it is . . . ” Edna’s heart gave way. The paramedics looked at each other.

“Isn’t she the lady from Cold Cases?”

“Netflix? I’ve seen that.”

The other one nodded. “Yeah. That’s it.” The ambulance halted. The paramedics climbed out, carrying

the lifeless body strapped to the stretcher. She was gone.

A lone street lamp glared onto the sheet, a silhouette lightly cast across it. For a moment, the Shadow loomed. Then laughed. A high, tinkling laugh.

“MMMMM.” Zeus snored. All of a sudden, Io appeared in front of him.

“You turned me into a cow. I was a goddess, but still,” she gagged. “MoooOOO.” Then, she shifted into Hera. “How dare you take another human! I am your wife!”

“Honey, I’m sorry, it will be the last time.”

“Too late, Zeus.” She lifted her pearly pink lightning bolt and then the light shone through the window.

Cerberus ran forward. “Persephone, my love!” Hades embraced his wife. “My love, how was your time above?

Would you like to go see Cerberus or sit in the garden?”

Persephone shook her head. “Cerberus! I have a present!” She strode forward and patted his middle head.

His side heads growled. How dare she pet their buddy but not them! “Do you want to see your gift?” Cerberus wagged his tail and tried to nose into her pockets. Maybe he would find the present first. “It’s a three-headed ball! Just like you!”

Cerberus sniffed it. Then shoved it with his nose.

Then, each head tentatively picked up the ball. Ouch! Their tongues were being bitten! He dropped the ball. The ball’s teeth were still visible. Persephone folded into Zeus. “See honey, it’s meant to kill you!”

Maybe some battle practice for his puppy will toughen my brother! Cerberus, I have a present!” Zeus mocked his avatar. “So gullible, Barbersrus.”

“Grrrr.”

And then Hades was cooing to him. “Good morning Cerberus! Do you want to sniff some souls?”

Hydra sighed and flopped onto their California King pillow, tucking themselves under the flame-retardant blanket. Zeus thought about that bastard Hercules, who murdered his best buddy.

La sombra por Aravah Chaiken, 13 años ¿Hacía frio, no? Imagenes de familia y amigos iban y venían, como canchita de granos. Deseaba haberse despedido. Las palabras son cosas tan extrañas. Una palabra puede tener varios significados. Sus pensamientos se pasaron de amigos, a familia, al caso de Boeren Bay Shadow.

Había reducido la lista de sospechosos y los productores la estaban presionando a elegir uno, pero no cabía. ¿Había sido solo ayer que estaba rebuscando los perfiles de los sospechosos? El tamborero vagabundo, perpetuamente golpeando el balde afuera de City Hall, oliendo a cigarrillos y gritando, “sal de mi césped” a intrusos imaginarios o políticos de visita. O el antiguo profesor de secundaria, Gene Finney, calvo con un peinado graso que parecía un arbusto, despido por supuestamente haberse robado de los estudiantes aunque el caso nunca fue comprobado.

Las piezas de la evidencia estaban tan cerca de hacer click. Como un rompecabezas, revisó los perfiles de los sospechosos, probando a ver qué daba con la evidencia.

La respuesta estaba en la cima de su conciencia. Fue en esos momentos silenciosos que había resuelto los casos más importantes del FBI. El silencio la envolvió en su capullo, lo que le permitió buscar en el archivo forense y conectar cada segmento en un mapa que la condujera al asesino. ¡Ahí está! El gran avance a su alcance. Podía sentir las piezas encajando. ¡Tan cerca!

Ding dong. Ding-a-ling-ee-ling. Su concentración se rompió, su ira hervía a fuego lento. Había dejado un cartel en la puerta. ¿Quién podría ser? Corrió la cortina. Todo lo que podía ver era el contorno de una sombra. “¡Bella! ¿Quién es?” La hija de Edna grito por las escaleras. “Es Barbara”.

Por supuesto, Barbara. Barbara no sabe leer. ¿Qué podría ser esta vez? Ayer había interrumpido para pedir prestado un huevo que había devuelto cinco minutos después porque había olvidado que necesitaba mantequilla en su lugar.

Edna suspiró. “¡Dile a Barbara que no estoy en casa!”

Oyó a Belladonna abajo. “Mamá dice que no está en casa”.

“Oh, entonces, ¿puedo entrar?” “¡Hola Barbara!” Llamé desde mi oficina. “Estoy ocupado en este momento, ¿podrías volver más tarde?”

“Oh, genial”, dijo Barbara con fingida alegría. “Galletas.”

Ella era la vecina que pasaba la mitad de su tiempo distribuyendo galletas en varios contenedores Tupperware y la otra mitad recuperándolas. “¿Cómo lo supiste?” Barbara se echó a reír con una risa aguda y tintineante.

Edna cerró la puerta de golpe repentinamente molesta, gruñendo su frustración. Respiró hondo y trató de reconectar las líneas mentales que conectaban las pistas, pero se habían desaparecido. El paramédico cerró la puerta de golpe, despertándola con un salto. Un tubo intravenoso se balanceaba por encima de ella. El techo de metal era como un espejo distorsionado, podía ver los labios del paramédico moverse, pero no podía oír ni entender las palabras. Volvía a sí misma lentamente. Estaba ahí, pero no estaba ahí.

Fragmentos de fotos de la escena del crimen clavaban su memoria. Cinta de la escena del crimen. Contornos de tiza. Desorden y caos. Migas. Tupperware desechado. El zumbido de las máquinas la despertó. Su corazón comenzó a latir de nuevo.

Edna levantó la cabeza, un pequeño movimiento que le costó sus fuerzas. “Escucha. La sombra . . . ” Ella

tosió. “Yo sé quién es. . . “El corazón de Edna paró. Los paramédicos se miraron. “¿No es ella la mujer de Fríos Casos?” “¿Netflix? Lo he visto “.

El otro asintió. “Si. Ese es.” La ambulancia se detuvo.

Los paramédicos bajaron llevando el cuerpo sin vida atado a la camilla. Ella se había ido. Una farola solitaria brillaba sobre la sábana, una silueta dibujada ligeramente a través de ella. Por un momento, la Sombra se asomó. Luego se rió. Una risa aguda y tintineante.

“MMMMM.” Zeus roncó. De pronto, Io apareció frente a él.

“Me convertiste en una vaca. Era una diosa, pero igual,” se atoro. “MoooOOO.” Entonces, se cambió a Hera. “¡Cómo te atreves a estar con otra humana! ¡Soy tu esposa!”

“Amor, perdoname, será la última vez.”

“Muy tarde, Zeus.” Alzo su truano de color rosado perla y una luz entro por su ventana.

Cerberus corrió adelante. “¡Persephone, mi amor!” Hades abrazo a su esposa. “Mi amor, ¿cómo fue tu tiempo allí arriba? ¿Quieres ver a Cerberus o sentarte en el jardín?”

Persophone negó con la cabeza “¡Cerberus!” ¡Te tengo un regalo!” Se adelantó y le hizo cariño a su cabeza del centro. Las cabezas de los costados gruñeron. ¡Como se atreve a darle cariño a su amigo y no a ellos! “¿Quieres ver tu regalo?” Cerberus movió la cola y trató de meter su nariz en sus bolsillos. Tal vez encontraría el regalo primero. “¡Es una pelota de tres cabezas! ¡Como tu!”

Cerberus la olio. Luego la metió en su nariz. Luego, cada cabeza recogió la pelota tímidamente. ¡Ow! ¡Sus lenguas habían sido mordidas! Se le cayó la pelota. Los

dientes de la pelota todavía eran visibles. Persephone se dobló ante Zeus. “ ¡Vez, amor, fue hecho para matarte!” “¡Tal vez más práctica con la batalla para su cachorro hará más fuerte a mi hermano! Cerberus, ¡tengo un regalo!” Zeus se burló de su avatar. “Que credulo, Barbersrus.”

“Grrrr.”

Y luego Hades lo estaba arrullando. “¡Buenos días Cerberus! ¿Quieres olfatear algunas almas?”

Hydra suspiró y se dejó caer sobre su almohada California King, metiéndose debajo de la manta ignífuga. Zeus pensó en ese bastardo de Hércules, que asesinó a su mejor amigo.
