A monument to Families Being Brave

Group 1

About the Program This book contains writing from 826michigan’s New Monuments virtual field trip program. During this program, students explore what a monument is and can be, dreaming up new possibilities for local ways to honor heroes and specialties, from the playful (coney dogs and magical creatures) to the serious (activists and abolitionists). In collaboration with 826michigan volunteers, students envision and draw these new possibilities, and then write about why they think their new monuments should be built. This project is based on the work by student writers at our sister chapter 826 New Orleans and their publication Courageous, Eccentric, Diverse: New Monuments for New Orleans.

People help our family. For example, a dad could be brave for going into the army. When families take care of each other when someone passes away, that takes bravery. My auntie helped my mom take care of my baby sister when she was born. My tía is brave when she climbs up ladders to fix things and to see the sunset. The statue could be a family all holding a sign that says BRAVE. It could be made out of metal so it lasts a long time. It would be very big, and pink and yellow so it would be beautiful. This statue would be in Ypsilanti so we can see it near Holmes Elementary School.
