Write Your Own Monument Proposal
About the Program
This book contains writing from 826michigan’s New Monuments virtual field trip program. During this program, students explore what a monument is and can be, dreaming up new possibilities for local ways to honor heroes and specialties, from the playful (coney dogs and magical creatures) to the serious (activists and abolitionists). In collaboration with 826michigan volunteers, students envision and draw these new possibilities, and then write about why they think their new monuments should be built. This project is based on the work by student writers at our sister chapter 826 New Orleans and their publication Courageous, Eccentric, Diverse: New Monuments for New Orleans.

A monument to Families Being Brave
Group 1
People help our family. For example, a dad could be brave for going into the army. When families take care of each other when someone passes away, that takes bravery. My auntie helped my mom take care of my baby sister when she was born. My tía is brave when she climbs up ladders to fix things and to see the sunset.
The statue could be a family all holding a sign that says BRAVE. It could be made out of metal so it lasts a long time. It would be very big, and pink and yellow so it would be beautiful. This statue would be in Ypsilanti so we can see it near Holmes Elementary School.
A monument to Families & Pets
Group 2
Families and pets deserve a monument because they show us love.
Our families are just special to us! Our families give us awesome gifts and SUPPORT us in hard times. Our animals give us cuddles and follow us around! They make us laugh and they look cute. Our monument would be made out of big rocks and would be located in a park where dogs and kids can see it. The rocks would be shaped to look like our family and animals. The monument would be bigger than a building! The monument would either be in Ohio at a camping park or at an apartment complex in Ypsilanti with a dog park near the water.
A monument to Family
Group 3
Family because they care for you and help you grow. Family will always be there for you. My mom gives me stuff and helps me out. My brother is a music player and my uncle is a soccer player. Our family does cool things! Our monument will be built outside in the front yard. It will be the size of a snowman. It will be made out of wood because it won’t break that fast. Our monument will include a trumpet for the brother and a soccer ball for the uncle.
