You are in space in a nice parallel universe. You are in a classroom in an ice castle school. Everyone at your school has ice powers! In class, you learn about other galaxies. It is too cold in the ice castle and it smells like mint. The fire dimension space ships start attacking your school. These ships could melt your ice castle! You and the other kids have to help defend the school.

The fire people get out of their ship and leave puddles where they walk. You can smell the burning gas from the fire ships, but it smells like chocolate chip cookies. Inside the ship, there is a chef making fresh cookies. The fire ships start to melt the castle and it begins to collapse.

To defend the ice castle school, you can use your ice powers to try to freeze the thrusters on the fire ships so they can’t move or you can talk it out with the fire people.

If you decide to use your ice powers against the fire ships, turn to page 2.

If you decide to talk it out with the fire people, turn to page 3.

You decide to use your ice powers against the fire ships. The ice powers aren’t working. They’re not affecting the space ships enough, so you have to plan another strategy.

There are holes in the ice castle, so you and some people try to fix the holes. Some of the other people get hurt from the fire and they go to the hospital for help. A frost dragon comes to fix the ice castle. The frost dragon looks just like ice and is hard to see. He is made out of ice and slime.

He has pointy red and dark blue teeth. You know he is there because he is wearing a black top hat with a blue stripe down the middle and a tuxedo.

He is ugly and when ice comes out of his mouth, it smells like smelly socks.

While the frost dragon defends the castle and fends off the fire people, you charge a big dubstep music wave with ice. A fire dragon attacks the frost dragon and they have a dubstep battle. One of the ice people is holding a boom box playing action music.

During the dubstep battle, the frost dragon blows ice on the fire dragon, freezing part of her body.

You can stay on the sidelines and cheer on the frost dragon or you can join the dubstep battle.

You decide to talk it out with the fire people.

You and your classmates go outside. You are so cold outside. You step in water puddles and they turn to ice. You say “Hey!” to get the fire people’s attention.

The fire people smell like a brand new car and burnt popcorn. They whip their heads around and respond with “What?”

You move closer to the fire people and ask them why they came to the ice castle school. They say they are here to melt the castle! You ask them what their reason is to melt the ice castle.

They explain that their own castle was burned down because it was made out of wood, and they are mad. Since they don’t have a castle, they think no one else should have a castle. They want to rebuild their own castle. You say that you could fix both castles together. Do you want to rebuild two separate castles or combine the fire and ice castle together?

If you decide to rebuild two separate castles, turn to page 6.

If you decide to combine the fire and ice castle together, turn to page 7.

You cheer on the frost dragon by shooting icicles in the air like fireworks for his dance. You and the other ice people are floating around in space. They have a special dance that they do in the battle. The dance they do is the TikTok “Corvette, Corvette” dance. Astronauts fly by you and see the dance competition! They’re confused and ask, “What’s going on? Dragons exist?!” You see the astronauts and invite them to join you. All of a sudden, when the astronauts look, they turn into yellow shadow dragons! These astronaut dragons are good and are on the ice people’s side. They even share their snacks! Takis, doughnuts, yum!

Then, green aliens join and start cheering the fire dragon on. They have a really big party and post it on TikTok. Their video is really popular on TikTok and Charli D’Amelio sees it! She invites all of her friends to come to space and join the party.

You decide to join the dubstep battle. The two dragons are in a tie. The fire dragon’s arm and leg are frozen, so she can’t move them, but she’s is trying to warm it so the ice melts.

Your arms are like ice guns. You keep shooting ice at the fire dragon, so as she melts the ice, you keep adding more. You also freeze her mouth so she can’t breathe anymore fire out. Half of the ice is crystal frozen, and the other half is like dry ice but more powerful.

You capture the fire dragon and tame it. Afterward, you decide to have a party with vanilla ice cream, mint chocolate chip ice cream, and watermelon ice cream topped with rainbow sprinkles.

But then, the fire people help the fire dragon escape! You and the ice people find out and prepare for battle with your ice dragon. You make a plan to break in. The fire people are making a plan, too.

The ice dragon stays behind to fix the castle while you break into the fire castle in the middle of the fire kingdom. You get captured by the fire people, and you use a horn to call the frost dragon for help. All ice people wear the horn to let other people know they are from the ice culture. Only dragons can hear the horn. The frost dragon comes to save you. He destroys the fire castle, and you head back to your kingdom.

You suspect the fire people might come back for revenge. You could build a bunker or start planning for their attack.

You decide to rebuild two separate castles! You will build the new fire castle where the fire people came from and use a spaceship to follow the fire people back to their planet. Their planet is a ball and has orange lava all over it.

You begin building the new fire castle out of ice. The ice in the fire castle is sweet, tastes like sugar, and smells like candy apple. The new fire castle is easy to build and resistant to everything else like fire. You add something to maintain cold temperatures so the fire people can’t burn it down with their fire. The fire people help you and the ice people build their castle. The fire people want a place to store their cookies, so you build it for them. The fire people like the castle you built for them and they say, “Thank you and sorry for burning down your castle.” You respond, “No problem and you’re welcome. We accept your apology.”

You leave and go back to the melted ice castle on Ice Land. Your rebuilt ice castle is made of big blocks of ice. The ice in your ice castle is a faded red and can also turn to white. After you rebuild your ice castle, you decide to rest before doing anything else.

You decide to rebuild a big fire and ice castle with the fire people. You use your ice powers to rebuild your side of the castle, and you call a frost dragon to help you.

There are two different sides, one made out of metal and one made out of ice. You are now friends with the fire people because you successfully talked it out.

Inside the castle, you decide to build a playground to play with the fire people. There is a pool made out of ice and lots of slides. Since we are in a parallel universe, the pool is deeper than the Mariana Trench and it never ends! In our universe it does not seem that deep. There are two different sides to the play room.

You have a scuba-diving class in the never ending pool and you see dolphins. The dolphins talk to us and they eat tadpoles in the pool. You go deeper and see squids that are made of fire! They eat dust. Then you see an octopus made out of ice. The deeper waters get hotter so the animals don’t freeze.

You are the only person that can talk to the underwater creatures. The dolphins are the talkative ones, and they tell you more about how the wooden fire castle burned down. The dolphins say that the fire started in the library. It started in the morning but the fire people noticed in the afternoon. You feel bad for the fire people so you go to get them more books. What kind of books will you get them?

Our writing and tutoring programs uphold a culture of creativity and imagination and support students in establishing strong habits of mind. Through publication and community engagement, we provide students with an authentic and enthusiastic audience for their writing.

Our programs provide an energizing creative outlet for students and meaningful volunteer opportunities for community members. We believe that with one-onone attention from caring adults, students improve their academic performance, develop a sense of belonging, and discover the unique value of their voices.

We also believe that the more fun a student has, and the more directly we speak to a student’s interests, the more we can help students find the fun in learning.

That’s why our programs are more than just extra homework. All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student’s power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in their individual voice.

ONLINE LEARNING LAB In the spring of 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we quickly transitioned all of our programs online. Our priority is to ensure the safety of our community, while continuing to offer engaging, high-quality opportunities to students. Each of our main programs—Schoolwork Support, Workshops, Field Trips, and In-school Projects—has been reimagined for the virtual space as part of our new Online Learning Lab. For the 2020–21 school year, our programs will remain virtual.

When is it safe to return to our in-person programs, we plan to continue to offer virtual program opportunities as well!

SCHOOLWORK SUPPORT The program formerly-known as tutoring has been given an updated name, but the same great foundations remain. We organize trained volunteer tutors to work with students one-on-one with their homework after school. Schoolwork Support is available for all subjects, for students ages 8–18. Generally, we offer this program at three locations: at our Liberty Street Lab in Ann Arbor, at the Michigan Avenue Branch of the Ypsilanti District Library, and at our Winder Street Lab in Detroit’s Eastern Market, though in-person programs are on pause this year. We have added a Virtual Schoolwork Support program. Students are paired with two tutors to work on assignments for school and writing projects of their choosing.

WORKSHOPS We offer a number of free workshops taught by professional artists, writers, and our talented volunteers. From comic books to screenplays, bookmaking to radio, our wide variety of workshops are perfect for writers of all ages and interests.

One of the most popular workshops we offer is our weekly Wee-bots program for elementary-aged writers.

IN-SCHOOL PROJECTS Our trained volunteers go into local public schools every day to support teachers with their classroom writing assignments. Based on the teacher’s curriculum, assignments range from writing tales to crafting college essays to exploring poetry.

In addition, we hold regular Writers Clubs, in which small groups of students are able to work on a writing project over the course of a semester, culminating in a publication. We also partner with schools to hold Family Writing Labs: laughterfilled events in which families to come together and participate in an evening of engaging writing activities and community connection.

FIELD TRIPS Always full of surprises and theatrics (and usually a visit from our crotchety editor, Dr. Blotch), our Field Trip program is an experiential writing extravaganza. We welcome teachers to bring their classes in for field trips during the school day.

Students join a group of volunteers, interns, and staff to help solve a problem through writing—whether that is Dr. Blotch’s insomnia, our looming story deadline, a mystery in need of solving, or one of the many others we encounter. Our field trips always end in a finished publication of original writing that students take home. Often the field trip writing is connected to a second leg of the students’ journey, whether a trip to a museum, library, or local record label, thanks to our many incredible community partners.

OUR STORES Our Robot Supply Co. stores are one-stop shops for robots, robot owners, and enthusiasts alike. They are designed to inspire creativity and bring awareness of our programs to the community.
