he Vermont Tech Jam had a much longer name when it started, in 2008. The Vermont 3.0 Creative Technology Career Jam was created by a coalition — of local colleges, the City of Burlington, the State of Vermont, the Vermont Technology Alliance and Seven Days — who shared a goal that hasn’t changed: to spread the word that Vermont is home to some seriously innovative tech companies, most of which are looking for qualified local employees. More than 1,500 people poured through Burlington’s Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center that January 26. Technologies, partners, venues and companies have come and gone, but the event has evolved and endured, just like the local tech sector. It’s still full of interesting jobs and stories to tell. Find both of those in this week’s Tech Issue of Seven Days.

After a COVID-19 hiatus in 2020, the 2021 Tech Jam moved to the new Hula coworking campus on the Burlington waterfront and included a keynote presentation by BETA Technologies CEO Kyle Clark and BETA adviser and customer Martine Rothblatt, wife of Bina and inventor of SiriusXM Satellite Radio. The 2022 keynote featured Boston Scientific cofounder John Abele and Sarah Kalil, CEO of CoreMap — one of many local tech founders Abele has mentored.

his year’s Tech Jam tagline has a double meaning. The first acknowledges the obvious: that heretofore unimaginable inventions such as artificial intelligence, electric aircraft and lab-grown meat have arrived. The second points out a lesserknown fact: People are working on all of these sci-fi-sounding technologies right here in Vermont. Seven Days invites you to meet the local talent behind the innovation at this year’s Vermont Tech Jam. Most of the companies at this annual career and tech expo are recruiting — you’ll find descriptions of each one of them in this guide. The list includes global enterprises such as semiconductor maker Marvell, whose Burlington workforce helps design the chips used in products such as smartphones and cars, and Colchester-based Hayward Tyler, whose employees service nuclear power plants across North America. Local startups come to the Tech Jam, too, including Wildlife Imaging Systems, which is
helping renewable energy companies minimize their impact on animals. When it first exhibited at the Jam in 2018, South Burlingtonbased BETA Technologies had fewer than two dozen employees. Now BETA is looking to hire 60 people and just opened a new large-scale production facility for electric aircraft, off Williston Road. BETA founder and CEO Kyle Clark discussed details of that planned expansion at the 2021 Vermont Tech Jam. The keynote conversation that year paired Clark and Beta adviser Martine Rothblatt, who invented SiriusXM Satellite Radio. They both live in Lincoln. This year’s keynote promises to be equally inspiring, when University of Vermont mechanical engineer Dr. Rachael Floreani and PhD candidate Irfan Tahir talk about their work advancing the development of lab-grown meat. From the front lines of cellular agriculture, they explain the challenges and opportunities of making meat without killing animals. Keep reading to learn more.

Our Hosts at Hula A hub for Vermont businesses, a venue for events
I
nnovation is all over the venue that hosts the Vermont Tech Jam. Hula occupies the lakefront property that formerly housed the Blodgett Oven factory, located off Lakeside Avenue in Burlington’s South End. The oven factory has since moved to Essex Junction, and Hula has become a busy hub for Vermont businesses, remote workers and events. Hula is once again one of the Tech Jam’s presenting sponsors. It’s the ideal venue for this event — a model of energy efficiency and creative reuse that shows off one of Burlington’s greatest natural assets: Lake Champlain. The two-story “channel,” with its abundance of greenery and natural light, encourages expansive thinking, while glassed-in conference rooms and soundproof meeting pods provide an opportunity to focus. We hope you’ll find time to do both at this year’s Tech Jam. Hula will offer 20-minute tours of the campus, with information about memberships, at 11 a.m., 1 and 2 p.m. Sign up at the Hula booth 1.

verybody’s gotta eat. The keynote presentation at this year’s Tech Jam focuses on a new way to feed people — by growing meat in a lab instead of raising and killing animals. Proponents of “cellular agriculture” point out that the world’s population is rising fast — according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s World Population Clock, there are now more than 8 billion of us on the planet. Will Vermont Go For Lab-Grown Meat? With Dr. Rachael Floreani and New Harvest Fellow Irfan Tahir Irfan Tahir in the lab at Burlington Bio
DARIA BISHOP
Organization of the United Nations show that carnivory has more than tripled over the past 50 years. That adds up to the annual slaughter of 80 billion animals. More and more land and water are required to raise them, and the result is increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Cell-cultivated, noslaughter meat offers a possible alternative. Although you can’t yet find such a thing on grocery store shelves, in July, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration approved the production and sale of cell-cultured chicken. Two restaurants in the country are already serving it. The Good Food Institute reports that worldwide investment in cultivated meat companies in the past five years totaled more than $2.5 billion. The race is on to make the production of lab-grown meat efficient, affordable and scalable. Hundreds of researchers in the U.S. are working to achieve those goals — including our keynote speakers, Dr. Rachael Floreani and Irfan Tahir. Dr. Floreani is an associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Vermont with a background in biotech. Her
research has yielded six granted patents, more than 40 scientific articles and an FDAapproved implant available on the market. A vegan, PhD candidate Tahir is a passionate cellular agriculture advocate — he founded UVM’s Cellular Agriculture Club and even has a “CELL AG” vanity license plate on his car. His research is funded by New Harvest, a nonprofit cellular agriculture research institute. In 2020, Tahir suggested that Floreani’s lab adapt its biomaterials work to the production of cell-cultivated meat. Her lab was able to produce a type of scaffolding that meat cells adhere to as they multiply. She eventually decided to apply for a patent to commercialize that
innovation. Her new company, Burlington Bio, is one of more than 150 companies in the U.S. working in this field. As of October 1, it’s headquartered at Hula. At the Tech Jam, Floreani and Tahir explain how cultivated meat is made and the opportunities and challenges it presents for Vermont. Food writer Melissa Pasanen talked with Floreani and Tahir for her cover story on cultivated meat in this week’s special Tech Issue of Seven Days. In it, Floreani asked a provocative question: “Vermont’s known as a food state. We have agriculture ingrained in our society. If the world is going to move away from traditional agriculture, shouldn’t Vermont be a part of that?”
If cellular agriculture is going to play a role in feeding the world, shouldn’t Vermont be part of that? 2023 VERMONT TECH JAM GUIDE
