THE LOC a LS’ GUIDE TO VERMONT
FOOD DRINK CULTURE SHOPPING SERVICES RECREATION
Call us starry-eyed, but there’s a lot to love about Vermont. From state parks and ski resorts to maple sugarhouses and music venues, there is a galaxy of good times to be had in our Green Mountain orbit. After another trip around the sun, the Seven Daysies are back, charting a course to what’s great about our state.
Forgive us our heavenly puns: The annual readers’ choice awards have gone zodiac for Seven Days’ 30th year. The whole planet feels like it’s in retrograde, but we’re studying our birth chart and the star signs, searching for celestial silver linings. We keep coming back to this one: We’re cosmically lucky to live where we do and among you fine folks reading this. The Daysies are our way of celebrating local luminaries — the businesses, people and places that make Vermont feel out of this world. We’re starstruck in their presence.
To kick off this year’s contest, we asked readers to participate in the democratic process — gotta keep it alive, right? — and cast their votes in categories highlighting the best of Vermont. From favorite folk band to creemee stand and pick-your-own farm to pickleball place, we wanted to know it all. We shot for the stars and are over the moon that you delivered: This year’s guide to All the Best recognizes 241 winners and 946 finalists.
Read on to learn more about this stellar group. At a time when our downtowns are struggling and our communities can seem fractured, it feels good to embrace our common ground and give these winners their flowers. So make plans to visit, support and experience the full horoscope of what they offer. (See what we did there?)
Daysies winners are not exactly written in the stars — after all, Vermonters picked ’em. But they will eclipse your heart.
CAROLYN FOX
The Daysies are the locals’ guide to Vermont, brought to you by Seven Days. Each year, we invite our readers to weigh in on hundreds of categories to identify their favorite things about this state.
For the first round of voting, thousands of Vermonters submit write-in nominations. We tally the votes, then present the finalists for Round 2 of voting — multiple choice-style. When the votes warrant it, we divide categories into “inside Chittenden County” and “outside Chittenden County” fields in order to shine a light on businesses beyond the populous Burlington area.
The top vote-getter in every category wins the Daysie, and all finalists earn invites to our summertime awards party on the Lake Champlain waterfront. New this year: The Vermont Community Foundation will award a $10,000 grant to the winner of best nonprofit organization.

BEST NEW RESTAURANT
Daysies voters aren’t the only ones who think Frankie’s deserves top billing: In 2024, Eater named it one of the 14 best new restaurants in the country.
General manager Cindi Kozak and chef Jordan Ware opened their Burlington dinner hot spot that April, striking out on their own after long tenures at Hen of the Wood. To the former home of Penny Cluse Café, they brought an elegant yet informal vibe starring a stunning marble bar and a rollicking private party room. The ever-changing, seafood-heavy menu is packed with local produce, sustainable wines, rare beers and a cocktail list Kozak described as “classic without being stuffy.”
“Take the ego out of all this,” Ware said. “Let’s just have fun.”
Frankie’s is fun, indeed — and delicious. Standout seasonal dishes might include pork croquettes with a pickled rhubarb sauce, electric-green scallop crudo with fermented fennel and sweet corn tortelli. And let’s not forget about the housemade creemees.
The Eater write-up called Frankie’s “the Noah Kahan of restaurants,” noting that “both the musician and Burlington’s hottest new table express their unabashed love for Vermont in a way that makes it impossible for the rest of us not to love it too.”
As Kahan sings, “You’re gonna go far,” Frankie’s. Burlington • frankiesvt.com

Al pastor and carnitas tacos with house sauce, guacamole, chips and a margarita
Since late 2018, Taco Gordo has held down the taco fort-o in Burlington’s Old North End. With casual counter and bar service, parchment-lined baskets, and a self-serve salsa and garnish bar, it has everything expected of a no-frills taqueria. But look closely, and you’ll find some frills: punchy housemade salsas, vibrant salads, a fan-favorite al pastor and fresh tortillas made right next door at All Souls Tortilleria. It’s Mexican, via Vermont.
Both fresh and frozen, the margs are great at Taco Gordo. But so are martinis with pickled red onion brine, complex cocktails with sherry and pineapple, scorpion bowls, housemade horchata, and good ol’ Modelo Especial beers — probably the only constant from the building’s history as a bottle redemption center.
The al pastor sells out fast, but you can’t go wrong with carnitas, tinga braised in house adobo sauce or beans cooked from “Grandma’s recipe.”
The corn tortillas are doubled up so the tacos don’t spill, and the burritos are big as a baby, swaddled just as tightly. They call it “Gordo” for a reason.

Whether you prefer your maple-dusted creemee on a porch swing overlooking a picturesque pasture of cows or in subzero temps while selecting a freshly cut Christmas tree, Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks offers quintessentially Vermonty experiences in every season. Go for springtime sugar on snow, the fall pumpkin harvest or to feed the resident goats, James and Rex.
But Morse Farm’s true raison d’être — and the best reason to visit — is its sensational maple syrup. This is Vermont’s oldest maple farm: The Morse family has been perfecting their craft since the late 1700s. Grade A syrups range from Golden Delicate to Very Dark Strong and come in containers from decorative 1.7-ounce maple leaf bottles to half-liter growlers to sturdy plastic gallon jugs.
While you’re there, taste test the Morses’ infused syrups — vanilla, cinnamon, habañero and the richly flavored bourbon-barrel aged — and you’ll be unable to leave without one. As you’re checking out, throw in some maple sugar candies, spreadable maple cream and maple kettle corn. Just don’t forget to stock up on the sticky marvel that brought you to the farm in the first place.

On the hamster wheel of life — dashing between work, household errands and daycare (kid or doggie) — sometimes you just want a quick, wholesome bite, ideally cooked by someone else. Since 2019, locally born Bliss Bee has ably met that need with its Vermont version of fast-casual food.
Fast-casual is restaurant-industry jargon for something between fast food and casual dining. It means the food is freshly prepared with fewer processed ingredients than at your average fast-food chain but still delivered relatively quickly.
At Bliss Bee’s outposts — two in South Burlington and one in Williston — that looks like hearty breakfast bowls with gluten-free grains, sweet potato, roasted broccoli and sliced apples, topped with a pair of sunny fried eggs. Or you can get a juicy Vermont-grown turkey burger with hoisin glaze and spicy scallion slaw — or a vegan, nut-free fruit smoothie. The crowd-pleasing menu also includes Vermont beef burgers, crispy chicken sandwiches, roasted salmon or tofu bowls, and locally sourced, seasonal salads.
There’s something for everyone in the family. Maybe even the dog.

You know a restaurant is serious about breakfast when it offers free, freshly fried doughnut holes during early-bird happy hour from 7 to 8 a.m. At the centuryold Wayside Restaurant, Bakery & Creamery, those sweet buttermilk nuggets are just one of the top-notch baked goods made in-house daily.
Late risers may miss the free treats, but the good news is that the Wayside serves up hearty breakfasts from morning to night, every day of the week. Regulars and tourists settle into booths or perch on stools at the recently refurbished, U-shaped counter and tuck into affordably priced, heaping plates — think corned-beef
hash with hand-cut home fries, fat western omelettes and weekend Benedicts with housemade hollandaise. On Mondays, the old-school daily breakfast special is chipped-beef gravy over toast or a fluffy biscuit, both baked fresh.
Bonus for those who breakfast into the evening: For the Wayside’s second daily happy hour, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., desserts are half price. There’s never been a better excuse to indulge in the Yankee tradition of pie for breakfast.

Kayla Silver does not turn up her nose at boxed wine. In fact, she’s happy to explain in detail why this packaging can be better for the planet, the drinker and the wine. As evidence, the certified sommelier and owner of Salt & Bubbles Wine Bar and Market in the Essex Experience offered a Piedmontese grignolino. A box of the light, fruity, chillable red made from a native Italian grape delivers the volume of three bottles for less than $20 each and drinks well for at least a month after being opened.
The example embodies what Salt & Bubbles is all about: expanding customers’ wine horizons in an approachable way.
“There’s so much more to the great wide world of wine than chardonnay, pinot grigio and malbec,” Silver said.
Salt & Bubbles team members make warm and enthusiastic guides, admittedly wine nerds but never snobs. They can advise on the right bottle for a barbecue or special celebration in the shop and recommend a fun, palate-stretching flight to pair with excellent, locally sourced small plates in the wine bar.
“Tell us what you like,” Silver said. “We’re here to help.”

Sometimes a dive bar is more about the spirit of a dive, rather than actually being, you know, a dingy establishment with cheap, crappy beer. While Three Needs has many hallmarks of a dive — including some of the most in-demand pool tables in Burlington — it’s also set in the fairly swanky former space of Parima Thai Restaurant. It has both a killer atmosphere and Vermont craft brews on tap.
Perhaps that’s why Daysies voters named the Needs the top bar and dive bar this year — neither title alone would do.
Whatever you call it, the Needs has been a crucial part of Burlington’s bar scene since 1995. It started as owner Glenn Walter’s tiny brewery on College Street and moved to Pearl in 2012. We lost the brewery but gained the Pizza Cube — essentially a fully functioning pizza spot. The Needs is still a great place to find a dark corner, order a cold beer and enjoy it in peace. And there’s no beating the outdoor patio.
The biz name came from a dream of Walter’s, but those three needs are left to the imagination — indeed, the bar keeps notebooks full of drunken musings from customers. If your needs are good beer, tasty pizza and a great vibe, look no further.

Sometimes, the difference between a good show and a great one is its setting. Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater, on the dignified summit of South Pleasant Street, elevates all manner of performances with its full stage and state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems. Audiences can count on sinking into one of the 350 red theater seats in its main auditorium and being transported by talented touring artists and local groups, such as Middlebury Acting Company and Opera Company of Middlebury.
But the theater hasn’t let itself get nearly as comfortable as those appealing red chairs. The 1884 building, which last received a major upgrade in 2008, raised the curtain this year on a 9,000-square-foot, $8.5 million wing, an ambitious expansion project that began in December 2023.
The wing’s flexible spaces, which include an outdoor courtyard with a stage, more than double the theater’s previous size.
Town Hall Theater’s amplified capacity for performances, events and educational programming is something to celebrate — and the community did just that at a grand opening party in June. Let’s give ’em all a round of applause!

Readers of Seven Days’ Fun Stuff will recognize Winooski artist Julianna Brazill, or at least her alter ego, as a stripey-shirted, hilariously quirky cartoon character who talks to her cats. But real-life Brazill also puts her pens and brushes to use capturing quieter moments outside her comics: Vermont landscapes, old buildings with character and less mouthy feline friends.
What makes Brazill’s illustrations so successful is the breadth of her style. Sometimes she creates black-and-white drawings using an overwhelming flurry of lines to describe every flower and leaf in a field. Other times, blocky bright colors map out flattened still lifes or stylized blossoms. Elsewhere, those comic skills are put to use in imaginative paintings of cats throwing a cocktail party or bunnies bird-watching in the park.
Illustrations don’t need to be funny, but Brazill’s are always lighthearted. She’s an expert at paring down her scenes to exactly what’s needed while still offering up the details that spin a whole story. Even when she’s not drawing comics, Brazill can steer her viewers through a meandering visual tale to land at a beautifully composed punch line. juliannabrazill.com

When it comes to country music, Vermont appreciates authenticity. You’ll find no flag-waving, watereddown country full of cliché lyrics here — leave that to the beer commercials. Instead, we have the likes of Ponyhustle, a Burlington band dedicated to the very roots of country music and the honky-tonk vibes of the 1950s and ’60s.
With Eric George and John Abair on guitar and vocals, Luke Hausman on bass, Trevor Michalak on drums, Rick Soszynski on lead guitar, Erich Meisberger on pedal steel, and Collin Cope on harmonica,

Located in Randolph, the Underground has been one of Vermont’s almost-hidden gems since owner and operator Vincent Freeman launched the project in 2018. Initially set in a 600-square-foot basement, the studio grew in 2021 and added a listening venue, hosting live music weekly for the past several years.
Live shows are currently on hold as Freeman and his partner are expecting a child. The studio, however, is going strong, producing and mixing records from local artists like Saints & Liars, Bow Thayer, Drowningman, and Sarah King, as well as touring artists such as Brooklyn post-punk act Cancel Vulture. Freeman brings his background in the DIY punk basement scene to his studio, which is now big enough to record full bands yet intimate enough to be a cozy spot for singer-songwriters.
Even as bigger and glitzier recording studios spread through Vermont, that appeal keeps musicians coming back to the Underground.

Arianna Soloway had a hunch that Burlingtonians would like a secondhand arts and crafts supply store. Creativity runs rampant in this town, and commitment to sustainability runs deep.
But Soloway was wrong: People don’t like it; they love it. So much so that the Makery is expanding and has won a Daysie — all before its one-year anniversary. Tucked in the city’s artsy South End, the Makery is a colorful, carefully curated store offering felt, fabric, paints, patterns, craft kits, sewing notions, yarn, beads, baubles, buttons and books for a fraction of what they’d cost new.
This makers’ mecca offers classes, too: Mini Makers for the 2- to 5-yearold set and a whole slate of workshops for those who are old enough to color within the lines — but who may choose not to!
Artists and crafters who drop off their excess supplies get store credit and the satisfaction of cleaning out, knowing that their bits and bobs will be rehomed and put to good use. Everybody wins. With a little plaster of paris and glossy metallic paint, someone could whip up a pretty fabulous trophy for that.

Just seven miles south of Burlington, Shelburne doesn’t exactly qualify as “country.” But the area was undoubtedly more rural when the main section of the Shelburne Country Store was constructed in the 1830s. A shop has operated there continuously since 1859. The building’s exterior — red clapboard with green-andwhite-striped awnings — offers the first clue that the store is aptly named.
Confirmation is just inside the front door, where patrons find worn wooden floors and beadboard ceilings. Diverse wares line the shelves and display racks: home goods, jewelry, stationery, specialty foods, Vermont souvenirs and candy.

BEST MENSWEAR STORE BEST MEN’S SHOE STORE
It says something about Vermonters that their favorite place to shop for men’s clothing and shoes is a store that specializes in rugged outdoor apparel for work and play. At Lenny’s locations, fellas can find a solid selection of pants, shirts, coats and outerwear by Carhartt, Wrangler, Sitka and Kühl, as well as work boots, casual shoes, sneakers and sandals by Keen, Merrell, Frye and Timberland. Need a fresh pair of Darn Tough socks? How about new camo wear for hunting season? Flame-resistant shirts and reflective neon rain gear for the jobsite? Yup, Lenny’s has got them, too, both in person and online.
Speaking of keeping important things covered, since 1990 Lenny’s has been a reliable financial supporter of local nonprofits such as the Vermont Foodbank, Special Olympics Vermont, COTS and the Humane Society of Chittenden County, to name a few. Amazon sure doesn’t give our community that kind of love.

What a difference two decades makes. In 2006, police responding to a noise complaint at the St. Johnsbury home of Nick Mattei discovered three cannabis plants growing in his bedroom. The then-23-year-old Northeast Kingdom native was arrested and convicted of felony cultivation and served three months in prison for his passion for indoor gardening.
Fast-forward to 2025. Mattei is now head cultivator and co-owner, with his wife, Angela Payette, of Forbins Finest. The Barre bud growers produce an extensive selection of cannabis pre-rolls, vape cartridges, concentrates, edibles, tinctures and, naturally, loose flower, all sold in more than a dozen dispensaries from Burlington to St. Johnsbury and Derby to Brattleboro. Whether you’re craving the Raspberry Parfait, Blueberry Cupcake, Pineapple Cream or Strawberry Mango Haze — is anyone else getting the munchies? — the 2024 Daysie runner-up was judged this year’s best ganja grower by the state’s high court of public opinion. A dope decision. Barre • forbinsfinest.com

A recent Facebook post shows a photo of an upper arm decorated with an idyllic New Hampshire landscape, topped by the Old Man of the Mountain. According to the caption, the arm’s owner is the fourth generation in his family to get tattooed by “Bald Bill” Henshaw, who founded Yankee Tattoo in Burlington almost 30 years ago.
Those years of experience are one reason folks swear by the Pearl Street shop, which has received many accolades, rave reviews and 17 Daysies over the decades for its tattoo and piercing services. The shop’s patient staff has worked with even the most ticklish of clients, as some tatted Seven Dayzers can attest.
Whether you’re looking for baroque botanicals, classic sailor pinups or a shark-headed lady with her arms amputated (see Instagram), Yankee can create it with a gentle hand. And if you need a touch-up in 20 years, never fear — Bald Bill and his crew will likely still be there. Burlington • yankeetattoo.net

The category is best salon, but for this perennial Daysies winner it ought to be best sal-ahhhn: Indigo prides itself on providing “personal care with a side of serenity.”
Step through its Burlington doors, and the madness of the daily grind melts away. The always sunny Annette Labombard greets clients. Shampoos come with a head massage, and cuts come with a lake view. Those waiting for their color to process sip tea in the lounge while they leaf through magazines or gaze at the Adirondacks. The 27-year-old salon is staffed with pros: 12 of the 29 have been with the company for more than 10 years. Cut, color, style — these artists do it all, and they take classes to keep up with the latest trends and techniques.
Owner Hannah LaVigne works alongside them. She joined Indigo as a part-time receptionist in 2001, worked her way up to manager and bought the place in 2021. It’s a one-stop shop to get refreshed and reenergized. Burlington • indigovt.com

It’s a bit ironic that Burlington Emergency & Veterinary Specialists has won a readers’ choice award, because no one really wants to go there. But if it’s a night, weekend or holiday — and, let’s be honest, that’s when trouble finds pets — and your dog tangles with a porcupine or, worse, something on wheels, you are so very happy that BEVS exists.
The Williston practice is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to offer emergency and critical care from board-certified specialists in surgery, internal medicine, neurology, ophthalmology, dentistry and oral surgery. What started in 1999 as a group of vets providing emergency services to 12 veterinary hospitals has grown into the largest emergency and referral veterinary hospital serving Vermont and upstate New York.
Its 17,000-square-foot facility houses 12 exam rooms, an intensive care unit, three surgery suites, CT and MRI units, and 120 compassionate caregivers. If a pet’s gotta do what a pet’s gotta do, it’s comforting to know that BEVS is gonna do what BEVS has done best for the past 26 years.

Whether serving cocktail-hour Caprese skewers with summer-sweet cherry tomatoes and fragrant basil leaves or wedding feast-worthy housemade agnolotti pasta stuffed with butternut squash, Sugarsnap Catering is known for menus starring seasonal, Vermont-grown ingredients. Longtime employees Samantha and Mike Kilhullen came to work for Duke in 2017 as interns from the now-closed New England Culinary Institute; they stayed to learn and flourish under her supportive wing. The couple appreciate and understand the attention to detail and calm, can-do attitude required to juggle a calendar of 400 annual events, from office lunches to full-service parties, including almost five dozen weddings.
“It feels good to be a part of everyone’s celebrations,” Samantha said. South Burlington • thesnapvt.com

BEST PUBLIC PLACE TO ICE SKATE
No Vermont winter bucket list is complete without a trip to Lake Morey Skate Trail in Fairlee — North America’s longest natural ice-skating route. The 4.3-mile loop winds around the entire lake and requires the rare alignment of weather variables, from temps to water currents, to open for public skating. The fleeting season is generally about a month long, starting around mid-January. When ice conditions are good, you’d better be ready. But the experience is worth the wait. The path boasts a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, making it feel more picture-perfect postcard than packed ice rink. Another great thing about Lake Morey Skate Trail? It’s free. While management of the trail switched from Lake Morey Resort to the Town of Fairlee this year, resort guests can borrow skates at no extra charge, and day visitors can rent from the resort’s clubhouse for $25.
We recommend dressing warmly in your thickest wool socks and bringing a camera to capture the spectacular scenery — for as long as your frozen fingers can hold out, anyway. Fairlee • lakemoreyresort.com

Few sports embrace puns as heartily as bowling. One need only look at the team names on any given league night for high-level examples of lowbrow punnery: the Bowling Stones, Seven Deadly Pins, Bowl Movement. While its name also employs dad joke-style wordplay, Spare Time Entertainment in Colchester is not your father’s bowling alley.
2022 saw a major renovation of Chittenden County’s last remaining bowling center, the flagship of Vermont’s family-owned Bowl New England empire. A leveled-up Game Zone now features dozens of arcade games, from Skee-Ball to Pac-Man to virtual-reality motorcycle racing. Test your wits in

To make room for that smorgasbord of sensory overload, Spare Time removed six of its original 36 bowling lanes. But it refreshed the remaining 30 to evoke the feel of a swanky cocktail lounge, complete with lane-side food and beverage service.
All those updates are meant to appeal to a wider spectrum of fun seekers, especially families. And judging by the swarming weekend crowds, it’s worked. But Spare Time still caters to bowling diehards: Weeknights are ruled by leagues ranging from casual to competitive. Colchester • sparetimeentertainment.com

Perhaps you’re like many people who assume that pickleball, the other racquet sport — after tennis, squash, badminton, Ping-Pong, qianball, basque pelota and racquetball — is the new kid on the block. You know, the young and flashy upstart that only exploded in popularity since the pandemic?
Guess again! The fun and social court game, invented on Washington’s Bainbridge Island, actually dates back to summer 1965, the same year that saw the advent of Kevlar and SpaghettiOs. Yet recently pickleball has so overtaken other racquet sports that in some communities around the country, the constant thwack! of paddles from sunrise to sunset has sparked lawsuits and neighborhood noise ordinances.
