welcome We’re delighted to see you at the Burlington International Airport, whether you’re flying for business or pleasure, a frequent flyer or brand new to the airport. While you’re waiting for your flight, please have a look around and enjoy some of our amenities and services, including: • Food vendors. In the north and south terminals as well as on the first floor near check-in, locally owned restaurants offer wholesome snacks and meals, including handmade crepes filled with farm-fresh ingredients, and robust coffee drinks. • Yoga room. On our second floor, this calm and cozy space offers passengers a chance to stretch, meditate or just chill out GENE RICHARDS before a flight. • Roof garden. On the mezzanine level of the terminal building, this pre-security seating area contains fixed-frame televisions with scenes of popular travel destinations. Wherever you’re going now, it’s always fun to fantasize about the next trip. Dream vacation, anyone? • Local art. To make our airport more beautiful, Burlington City Arts curates exhibits of work by Vermont artists in the pre-security Gate’s area of the north terminal, above the escalators and along the Skyway. Translated into French for our Québécois friends, the quarterly magazine BTV offers not only a guide to the airport but a sampling of things to do in the Burlington area. You’ll find bike rentals at Allenholm Farm (allenholm.com) and powerboat rentals at Apple Island Marina (apple islandresort.com). Motor up to Isle La Motte to check out Chazy Fossil Reef, one of the oldest such reefs in the world at 480 million years. For those who prefer a slightly slower pace — say, for flying a kite or spreading a picnic on the sand — day-use state parks knit the islands together. At Sand Bar State Park, kids can wade in the shallow waters while adults watch the kiteboarding action. Head up to Knight Point State Park to see the drawbridge between Grand Isle and North Hero rise and fall. Closer to the Canadian border, at North Hero State Park, 399 acres of beaches and trails have a delightfully deserted feel since overnighting was abolished in 2010. The park is a stop on the Lake Champlain Paddlers’ Trail, a watery corridor that connects 41 locations for kayakers, stand-up paddleboarders and canoeists in New York and Vermont.

atharine Montstream has been painting for more than 25 years, garnering both artistic and commercial success from her lovely landscapes and florals in watercolor and oil, as well as from a robust greeting-card business. Some images, such as her painting of local peak Camel’s Hump, might even be called iconic, and are much in demand as reproduction prints. But for most of her career, Montstream, now 52, worked in a studio tucked out of sight, just down the hill from downtown Burlington near the waterfront. When she moved into a downtown gallery a year ago — right across from City Hall Park and in time for Burlington’s weekly farmers market — a whole new group of curious customers discovered her.

“I’ll get a guy — a downtown employee on his lunch break — coming in to buy a card for his mom,” Montstream says, citing an example. “So many more people have found us.” Montstream credits her husband and business manager, Alan Dworshak, with creating the St. Paul Street gallery. Window boxes filled with flowers adorn the storefront; inside, the walls are painted chocolate brown, Tuscan gold and robin’s egg blue. The space is just as pretty as the artwork on display. A comfy couch invites visitors to sit and chat, or to contemplate a purchase; in the back, rustic barnboard half-walls corral a framing area. The whole effect resembles being in one of Montstream’s paintings. While most of her images depict Vermont — and some, like the Camel’s Hump painting or the Burlington skyline, are recognizable — Montstream is careful to leave something to the viewer’s imagination. The flowers in her loosely rendered and brilliantly hued watercolors, for example, could have originated anywhere in the world. “I like it to be murky and mysterious,” she says. “It’s artistic license.” Montstream Studio seems destined to succeed in Burlington, where, with some notable exceptions, commercial galleries have come and gone over the years. Just across the park, Burlington City Arts operates the BCA Center, which focuses on contemporary art by both local and national artists. Those two, along with Frog Hollow Vermont State Craft Center just up Church Street, anchor the downtown scene in a city that celebrates visual art — and a state that allegedly has more artists per capita than any other. If you’re an art collector or just like to browse, those venues — and others listed here — are mustsee stops in Burlington. You’ll also find works by local artists in nearly every restaurant, coffee shop, hotel, hair salon and bank in town. Have a look.

Beaucoup plus de gens savent maintenant que nous existons. » Katharine attribue le mérite de la réussite de sa galerie de la rue St. Paul à son mari et directeur commercial, Alan Dworshak. Des jardinières remplies de fleurs ornent la façade de l’établissement. À l’intérieur, les murs sont peints en marron, or et bleu. L’espace est tout aussi joli que les œuvres exposées. On se croirait presque dans une peinture de Katharine. Ainsi, ses fleurs à l’aquarelle, peintes sans contrainte de forme et dans des couleurs lumineuses, auraient pu pousser n’importe où dans le monde. « J’aime cultiver un certain mystère, dit-elle. C’est un peu mon privilège d’artiste. » Le Montstream Studio semble promis à un bel avenir à Burlington, où – à part quelques exceptions notables – les galeries commerciales vont et viennent au fil des ans. De l’autre côté du parc, Burlington City Arts exploite le BCA Center, spécialisé dans l’art contemporain local et national. Ces établissements, ainsi que le Frog Hollow Vermont State Craft Center, situé tout près, sur la rue Church, occupent le centre de la scène d’une ville qui accorde une place de choix aux arts visuels et d’un État qui compterait plus d’artistes par habitant que n’importe quel autre aux États-Unis. A palate-pleasing tour through local hot spots gives imbibers the chance to sample an array of these award-winning brews. Beginning in downtown Burlington, a stop at Vermont Pub & Brewery offers hops-heavy standby Dogbite Bitter along with a timetested selection of ales, porters and stouts. These are best enjoyed on VPB’s outdoor patio. Just a short distance away, nestled amid Pine Street’s corridor of eateries and art galleries, Citizen Cider lends a rustic-chic atmosphere to the sipping experience. Many of these local flavors abound at the Burlington Farmers Market, which takes over City Hall Park every Saturday throughout the summer. More than 80 vendors offer an array of produce, cheeses, breads, local meats and flowers alongside prepared foods. urlington City Arts curates art exhibits at the airport in three areas: the Skyway, the area above the escalator and the walls facing security for Gates 1-8. Whether you’ve arrived early for a flight or are waiting to pick up passengers, do take the time to have a look around! Through June, Donna Bourne shows her soft-focus, travelinspired landscapes and ethereal paintings at the Gates; Brooke Monte’s mystical paintings line the Skyway. In July and August, members of the Milton Artists Guild hang a group exhibit in various media in the Gates area and Skyway. Finally, for all three months, Gisela Alpert’s large-scale floral oil paintings can be seen over the escalator. If you’re going up, be sure to turn around and look at the wall behind you. But watch your step! All these artists live in the Burlington area. Please enjoy examples of their work at the airport and on their individual websites.

orporal Paul Fabiani rarely performs typical police work. He spends most days with just one other officer patroling Burlington International Airport, including the terminal, parking garage, airfield and its perimeter. Fabiani, a native of Staten Island, N.Y. — and son of a 20-year New York Police Department cop — has been on the force in Vermont since 1992. He joined the Burlington PD in 1998 and has worked almost exclusively at the airport since 2009. As he puts it, “It’s a different pace of police work here.” Fabiani, 41, lives in nearby Richmond, with his wife and two kids. He took a few minutes from his rounds to tell us about his job. Why do you prefer working at Burlington International Airport? You’re not responding to as many 911 calls. We don’t have the typical domestic disputes, bar fights and noise complaints. Up here, we’re dealing a lot with irritated and frustrated passengers who are angry at the airlines or the TSA [Transportation Security Administration]. Once in a while, we deal with intoxicated people flying in, or flying out, which of course we try to prevent. What’s your involvement with the security checkpoints? We like to maintain a high presence around them, more to help out the TSA. Some people who are frequent travelers get a little irritated at times, but when there’s a law enforcement officer present, it seems to change their attitude. It’s beneficial for the TSA to have us there, too, especially when they have to deal with someone with a prohibited item. What are those, usually? Often, we’ll see a hunter who uses his knapsack to fly to another city and forgets he’s got two .30-30 rounds [of ammo] in his bag. That’s not uncommon in Vermont, where there are a lot of hunters and it’s just a part of life … But for the most part, it’s petty things like

Ici, nous sommes surtout aux prises avec des passagers irrités et frustrés qui sont fâchés contre les compagnies aériennes ou les services de sécurité. De temps en temps, nous avons des personnes en état d’ébriété qui arrivent ou qui partent, ce que nous essayons d’empêcher le plus possible. Comment intervenez-vous aux points de contrôle de sécurité? Nous essayons d’être très présents, en premier lieu pour aider les services de sécurité.
