From the FMEC President Welcome to the FMEC Annual Meeting! I will miss seeing you all in person, as the energy that characterizes our shared time together may well look and feel different this year. Like the rest of the world, FMEC has needed to be more flexible and creative than usual to continue to share our programming and advocacy with you. One of the benefits of virtual gathering, however, is that it removes the constraints of travel and distance, and has helped us shift and grow many of our partnerships and collaborations. As you enjoy, learn from, and make vital connections through this event, please be aware that the meeting is only a starting place; join us throughout the year for “An Evening With…” discussions with family medicine leaders, The Innovators Network, and other established and burgeoning projects. It has become more apparent than ever this year that family physicians are lifesavers every day, whether treating COVID patients in the hospital, office or virtually, or fighting racial injustice in the streets and in our established medical institutions. Let FMEC partner with you to realize the full potential of family medicine.

What a year it has been! 2020 has brought unforeseen challenges, and when we first started planning we never imagined that we would be hosting a virtual conference this year. Challenging times call for innovation and adaptability, and luckily that is what we in Family Medicine do best!

If you are new to the meeting, we welcome you and hope that you feel the enthusiasm and passion for Family Medicine that is the hallmark of this meeting. For nearly thirty years, the FMEC meeting has drawn students, faculty, community physicians, and other stakeholders united by their love of Family Medicine. For those of you who are returning, welcome back! Even in this new format, we hope you will be reinvigorated by reconnecting with your Family Medicine colleagues.

We chose this year’s theme, “Family Medicine: Leading and Learning together in Challenging Times”, to remind us all that we are not strangers to change and even adversity. We are innovators and leaders in our communities, our institutions, and on the national stage. We hope that this year’s meeting is a chance to rejuvenate the sense of wonder, inspiration and community that has led so many of us to “find our tribe” in Family Medicine. We are all in this together!

Networking

One of the hallmarks of the FMEC Annual Meeting is the networking that occurs among the meeting participants.

With a virtual meeting this is more challenging.

To allow for participants to network we will be using a list of meeting registrants. This will allow you to identify and communicate with those who have registered for the meeting. We will include your name, credentials, organization, city, state, and email address. This will be posted in our virtual platform but can be downloaded by meeting attendees.

Clinical Success Stories

This venue allows presenters to (a) share a patient story which has inspired their own passion to serve and care for others or that reveals one or more of the core attributes of Family Medicine or (b) share a story that addresses the teaching of students/residents.

Lecture Discussions

The LD format is to be used for sharing information with an audience that relates to a clinical, educational or policy topic, report of a project and/or activity, introduction of a policy issue, etc.

Networking Discussions

During our meeting each year, we provide breakfast and lunch discussion tables that allow students, residents and faculty members to meet in small groups to discuss a topic of shared interest. In our virtual format, the networking discussion sessions provide this space. A faculty moderator will lead the discussion and all are welcome to join in what is essentially a Zoom meeting. Its a great way to see and be seen in a learning format

Seminars

Seminars are designed to transmit specific knowledge in a given area and consist of a combination of formal presentations and group discussions.

Speed Presentations

This format provides the presenter 7 minutes and a maximum of 5 slides to share ideas and information in a focused, direct manner.

Research Papers

Research presentations report rigorously designed investigations.

Workshops

Workshops are designed to transmit specific skills and should be directed toward learning methodologies and strategies for approaching problems in teaching students, residents and faculty. The participants should be actively involved and should be able to acquire an understanding of various approaches to these problems.

Paper Sessions

Paper presentations provide an opportunity to present to a wide audience about research, scholarship, curricular design, teaching programs, community service, and any other topic of interest related to Family Medicine. Projects under development are also accepted in this category.

Poster Sessions

The poster session serves as an informal exchange of information on various topics of interest in Family Medicine.

“Perspectives in Prevention, Big Data, and Delivery System Re-design in Post-COVID Primary Care: Implications for Family Medicine” The pandemic has revealed major breaches in the primary care and public health sectors of our healthcare system. A variety of factors have contributed to this. The question is what’s to be done about it? Four Family Physicians leaders each with unique backgrounds will address this question.

The speakers will look into their respective crystal balls and describe how Family Medicine/primary care can use this opportunity to move toward a primary care driven system in the United States.

Christopher Crowe MD leads the Catalyst Health Network which is based in Dallas Texas. His leadership supports a large network of primary care practices that serves more than 1 million patients.

Alex Krist MD, MPH is on the faculty of the Virginia Commonwealth University Fairfax Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program. He is also the director of the US Preventive Services Taskforce.

9:00 am – 11:00 am (EST) “Naming Racism, then Moving to Action” As President of the American Public Health Association in 2016, Dr. Jones launched that association on a National Campaign Against Racism with three tasks: Name racism. Ask “How is racism operating here?” Organize and strategize to act. As of the writing of this abstract, there are at least 84 US counties and cities that have declared racism to be a public health crisis. How do we leverage these public declarations?
