One of my favorite things about being a director and an actor is researching ideas and eras. When I first came in contact with Million Dollar Quartet, I had no idea that it was going to be an American history lesson. Performing as Sam Phillips in a production of the play directed by Hunter Foster (the actor who originated the role on Broadway) was the beginning of that education. Like many of you reading this, I had an understanding of Rock and Roll as a cultural flash point for youth coming of age in the 1950s, that it rose out of the southern United States and was created from a mix of African American musical styles and the country music of prior decades. Looking closer, I believe that, like America, Rock and Roll’s legacy, is, and will continue to be, complicated. It was born out of poverty, slavery, immigration and the yearning of new generations to break free from the status quo accepted by their parents and as a way to assert themselves. It influences everything it touches. It changed the history of fashion, lifestyles, attitudes, language, cultures and arguably helped bring about the civil rights movement. It also provided the soundtrack for Vietnam, the women’s movement, the cold war, the fall of the Berlin Wall and so much more. And this vast soundtrack owes a good deal of its origins to what happened on December 4, 1956 at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis, Tenessee. That brings me to you, sitting in your seat, waiting for the show to begin. We’re excited to share this story with you. To give you a glimpse into a night that helped secure America’s place as a land of innovation. A night that people have referred to as the “Mount Rushmore of Rock Music” and to Sam Phillips as the “Father of Rock and Roll”. Enjoy! Michael Ray Wisely
