When we announced our 2017-2018 Season, we promised those who love the intimacy of our Studio Theatre that we would kick it off with something very special. We have lived up to our promise! Constellations by Nick Payne has been one of the most sought after plays for production by theatre companies world-wide since 2012, and we are so fortunate to be only the second theatre in the entire SF Bay Area to produce this beautiful and astounding play. At the center of Constellations is the examination of one relationship; magnified and dissected as only it could be by bending time, altering space, and turning love’s universe on its head in order to show us the infinite, parallel paths that lie in each decision we make. This play forces us to ponder the great “what ifs” of our choices – in life and in love. It takes bravery and courage to undertake that examination, and to ask the hard questions of ourselves, and each other. I hope that you enjoy the lessons of life and love that Roland and Marianne have to share with us tonight; that we might ponder our own “What ifs” so we can ultimately embrace “What is.”

GK HARDT THEATRE

DIRECTOR’S NOTE There have been many late evenings where my husband and I have discussed the vast conundrums of the universe. These discussions have always led us to one pivotal point, “What is the purpose of humankind as we know it?” Nick Payne’s powerful and thought provoking play answers this question in a way that is so incredibly human, and magical, it leaves you mesmerized by the infinite possibilities our universe holds. His ingenious development in subtext and structure provides a connection to the splendor of universal scientific theories. Looking through the telescope we see the infinite possibilities of true love. The actors, Melissa and Jared, who brilliantly play Marianne and Roland bring this love story to life in a way that takes your breath away. My heart is full of gratitude for this wonderful opportunity to work with them and witness their magical connection on stage! Tonight, as audience members, I encourage you to transcend into the vast possibilities of the universe as we ponder the question, ‘What if?’

Sincerely, Juliet Noonan Stage Director

WHO’S WHO NICK PAYNE is a British playwright and screenwriter born in 1984. His first play, If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet opened in 2009 and won the George Devine Award. His second play Wanderlust opened in 2010 to positive reviews. Payne’s next play, Constellations, opened in 2012 and was well received, with Charles Spencer in the Daily Telegraph commenting that “Nick Payne’s drama lasts just over an hour but packs in more than most shows manage in three times that length. It is playful, intelligent and bursting with ideas, but also achieves a powerful undertow of emotion.” Constellations won the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Play. The American premiere of Constellations opened on Broadway in January 2015 and starred Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Wilson. Some of Payne’s other credits include: (Stage) The Same Deep Water As Me, Blurred Lines, Incognito, The Art of Dying, Elegy; (Screen) The Sense of an Ending, The Secrets and Us KEVIN BACON (Co-Scenic Designer) is a UC Berkeley graduate with honors with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He has been the Scenic Charge Artist at the Playhouse since March 2017 and recently joined the staff at the Chimera Arts and Maker Space in Sebastopol. He also freelances as a digital illustrator/painter and graphic designer. View his artwork at www. kbbacon.com.

LENNIE DEAN (Education Associate) received an MFA in Acting from Temple University and has been part of the Sonoma County theater scene for 40 years. Her skills, talents, and passion have led her to teach, act, direct, and work as dramaturg, in addition to producing for several theater companies and schools in New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco. As the Education Associate she teaches adult and senior acting classes. She developed the annual Star Seekers contest for middle school students. Her favorite acting role of late was as Meg in Beauty Queen of Leenane, for which she won the SOTA award for best actress. At 6th Street she has directed Silent Sky, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Happy by Rob Caisley, and most recently The Children’s Hour and Threshold Theatre’s John.

ANNA HECHT (Theatre Operations Associate) is a graduate of San Francisco State University, receiving a Bachelor of 10

Arts degree in print and online journalism. She was a theatre reporter and editor for two college newspapers throughout her education. She is excited to be a part of 6th Street Playhouse where she can combine her journalism skills and love of theatre.

CRAIG A. MILLER (Artistic Director) received his B.A. in Acting at the Illinois State University School of Theatre, and his M.F.A. in Directing at the University of South Carolina. Before 6th Street, he was the Executive Artistic Director of East Window Theatre Co. in Chicago, IL (1996-2000), served as Casting Associate for The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (2003-2005), and founded and served as the Artistic Director of The Texas Repertory Theatre Co. in Houston, TX (2005-2011). Craig has directed professional productions at regional theatres across the United States, receiving critical acclaim in publications including American Theatre Magazine, Variety, and The New York Times. His directing credits at the Playhouse include more than 25 productions. He was nominated for Best Director by the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle for August: Osage County and RED and both productions won the SFBATCC award for Best Ensemble.

WHO’S WHO NANCY MORGAN (Business Manager) has non-artistic “credits” that include an MBA degree from Indiana University Bloomington and a 9,000 mile bicycle trip across the United States with husband, Bill. She has worked as a staff accountant for Ottaway Newspapers and in Bill’s start-up company, Calan Inc., purchased by Hewlett Packard in 1995. A transplanted Hoosier, Nancy is an ardent volunteer. In 2003 she responded to the box office needs of the Santa Rosa Players & Actors Theater, now the 6th Street Playhouse. GAIL REINE (Costume Designer/Costume Shop Manager) has been with 6th Street for a little over 6 years starting as a volunteer in the costume shop, and whose work has progressed to being a SOTA nominee in costume design. With a degree in graphic design, she worked for many years in the field and has been able to utilize those skills, bringing with her an “eye for design.” A native Santa Rosan, she is happy to be a part of such a community favorite as 6th Street and its amazing staff and rotating talent.

JARED SAKREN (Executive Director) joined the playhouse after 15 years as the Producing Artistic Director of the Southwest Shakespeare Company, the premiere classical theatre of Arizona where he served as both the management and artistic leader.
