CONTRIBUTORS Denise DePaolo Erin Mairose Morgan Matzen CIRCULATION

I love the Lifestyle Issue because it can cover so many things. It can go from Infant Aquatics, where certified specialist Andrea Oswald is teaching young children survival skills for water, to SOL Suspension—a body suspension team. You can legit shop Rapid City entrepreneur Roxanne Rathbun's lifestyle with her company On the Rox, which sells items like crystal jewelry with deeper meaning and cleansing bundles. A huge trend happening that covers all types of lifestyles is podcasting. It seems like every month there is another new South Dakota podcast to stream, talking about different topics, from writing to beer to building businesses. So speaking of lifestyle, sit back however you like, grab whatever refreshment or snack you crave, and learn more about others living their lives in our wonderful state.

Infant Water Training by Erin Mairose

I

magine an infant in water with no floating devices, knowing how to use breath control, rolling over, and floating to self-rescue themselves in any depth of water.

She grew up "in a small town in Nebraska," and after graduating from Augustana University, she nannied in Colorado where she took her two kids to an infant aquatics class.

That’s what Andrea Oswald’s program, Float On, teaches children as young as 6 month old.

“I thought they would splash around for a bit … but no; within the first day they were learning how to hold their breath and were going underwater and not panicking,” said Oswald.

“It’s such an amazing moment when they finally get it,” she said. “But that’s what makes this job so fun.” Oswald is the only certified Infant Aquatics Specialist (IAS) in the state, and only a year into teaching, she’s taught over 100 kids since starting her program in January 2018 at the Dow Rummel Village indoor pool in Sioux Falls.

1 8 \\\\\\\\\ A U G U S T

A few years later, founder of The Infant Aquatics Network Judy Huemann encouraged Oswald to take the training knowing how much she loved swimming and working with kids. On her first day of training, Oswald was already working with an infant, and after six weeks of intensive training, she became a certified instructor.

“I love the quote, 'Don’t rescue your child from a challenge, teach them how to face it,'” she said. That’s the goal for each child who goes through the program: to be able to self-rescue in a drowning situation. For a child 6 months to walking, they learn to do a survival float, and once they can walk, Oswald teaches them how to swim with a float and kicking info sequence.

For more on Infant Aquatics, visit infantaquatics. com.

Her swimming lessons are private one-on-one sessions. For infants 6-12 months, each session is 10 minutes a day for 24 sessions. Infants must be able to roll over onto their back before starting the program.

After six weeks, they learn breath control, kicking and motor development, floating, swim sequences, and not to panic. In the last week of the program she tests their abilities through different scenarios, including dressing them in a snowsuit before falling into the water to ensure they’re able to self rescue. “It’s really cool when the parents see what they’re able to do and realize this is totally worth it,” she said. When Oswald started Float On, her goal was to teach 20 kids, and at present she has more parents wanting to enroll their child than she’s able to keep up with. Since each lesson is one on one, Oswald is able to tailor each class to the child. “I put all my heart and soul into each kid, and I’ve worked with children for so long that I know how different each one is,” she said. Every child Oswald has taught has successfully completed the program, equipping them with life-saving survival skills, confidence, and a little more peace of mind for their parents.

Some mornings after I have worked out, I treat myself to soft-shell tacos for breakfast from Taco John’s. Early in the day when we are both in town, I’ll talk to my father at the office, and sometimes my aunt, Nancy, where I get the perspective of people who always find a reason to smile first. I know I’m blessed with wonderful roots on all sides of my family. When I can find a break, I like walking through downtown. I’m constantly amazed at the new developments and new restaurants, and I appreciate the artwork—especially the new SculptureWalk. I pay attention to courthouse history in state and federal courthouses here and in other states, wherever my work takes me. Since law has been in my family for three generations, it’s also fun to connect the dots, so to speak. I’m often driving a lot to various towns like Brookings, Huron, Rapid City, and Sturgis for meetings and hearings. I find

the windshield time peaceful, usually with coffee in hand. You can find me shopping with the early crowd at Sam’s Club every week. Seeing that my wife Char and I have raised six kids between the two of us, we have always been fans of buying in bulk. My favorite type of cooking is with old fashioned clay pots in a hot oven. Favorites include large beef roasts or multiple chicken breasts or pork loin. My most satisfying time with my work is discovering the story of my client and finding stories and evidence that people can relate to. An evening at Morrie’s Steakhouse is always a good one. Their food is great, and they serve their spirits in real crystal (they know to bring me a Macallan scotch). All their staff is fantastic, but the folks in the bar create a real family atmosphere that we enjoy. FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT HOYLAW.COM.•

S L SUSPENSION A group that Leaves People Hanging

2 6 \\\\\\\\\ A U G U S T

LIFESTYLE

by Morgan Matzen

For some, hanging by hooks pierced through one’s flesh, suspending the body in the air and feeling a rush of blood and adrenaline coarse through one’s veins, may not sound like an ideal way to spend a few seconds or even up to a few hours. Yet for Ashley Premer of Sioux Falls, this is more than a hobby. She’s the leader of an enthusiastic group of suspensioners known as SOL Suspension who meet up to partake in this activity at least once a month. Premer, who owns Vibrant Salon and also bartends, considers herself a seasoned veteran of suspension, having suspended more than 100 times. She also dabbles in circus sideshow acts and “freak show” acts. “With our shows, we like to play up the gore because we’re super seasoned,” said Premer. “I’ve done well over 100 suspensions. I’ve

personally been doing sideshow acts since I was 18, and I’m 30 now. It means a lot to me. I do human pincushion, bed of nails, and ladder of machetes.” The cultural roots of suspension trace back to the Sun Dance ceremony in various indigenous communities, which has been appropriated by non-native people for recreational purposes in recent years. “Now, a lot of people do it for different reasons,” said Premer. “Some of us do it for fun, to see what we can put our bodies through, to overcome addictions, to get past mourning a loved one’s death, for spiritual reasons … there’s a lot of different reasons [people] do it.” Premer sees suspension as a new hobby and an art form, and says there's a lot of overlap with people connected to body modification. “Most people that are into suspension are connected to body modification in some way,” she explained. “Either they’re practitioners or they’re collectors where they just like getting work done. Anybody is more than welcome to join.”

LIFESTYLE

“There’s countless benefits to suspension. The boost in selfesteem is the biggest one. A lot of people don’t realize how strong they are until after they do it.”

“We’ve suspended everyone from super skinny to [plus-size] and everywhere in between.” Premer says it's perfectly safe, and those who choose to suspend have the option to come down at any time. “We focus a lot on cleanliness and safety,” she said. “We have all the best equipment you can have.” The group meets at Club David at least once a month, and they aim for the environment to be completely inclusive, including all body types, skill levels, and people over 18. “We always take newcomers and walk them through what’s going to happen,” said Premer. “We generally do ‘suicides’ for the first suspension just to let people get their feet wet, so to speak. Suicide is basically just hooks in the upper back. It’s absolutely safe.” Some of the risks that come with suspension include tears and infection from the holes, but the group advises those who wish to try to be safe, to stay hydrated, to eat a good meal, and to get in a good headspace before suspending. “There’s always a level of danger that goes into something like that, but we take every precaution that we can to make it as safe as possible,” said Premer. “It’s no more risky than getting a piercing. If anything, it’s safer than getting a piercing.” Premer says the group is inclusive of anyone who wants to try suspension. “We’re super inclusive,” she said. “Anybody that wants to suspend can suspend, no matter what your background is. The best thing to do for anyone if you’re on the fence about it is to just come and watch."

Homegrown Hideway by Kyle Determan

When Marylisa and Blaine Crissman moved to Sioux Falls from Chicago eight years ago, they knew they wanted more space. Little did they know, they would land in the middle of the city. After a few coats of paint and some Charleston charm, this hidden gem turned into their dream home.

THE “GO TO” EXPERIENCE TO STEP BACK INTO DEADWOOD’S COLORFUL PAST

From the almost-solid wall of trees to the 2.7 acres of outdoor space, the Crissmans love the outside as much as the inside of their home. With a firepit, a pond, and a pergola, it was easy to see why. “We built the firepit down there. It has just been the best place for memories and gatherings,” said Marylisa. “It really feels like you’re camping, especially because you're so far from the house. And there is always a ton of wildlife.” To the side of the house sits the custombuilt pergola, complete with a twin bedturned-swing that is perfect for basking in the sun or watching the sunset. “We spend a lot of time out here. Sometimes my friends and I will sit out here and have a glass of wine, or I will read a book with Finn (our dog) and it’s just so relaxing,” said Marylisa. In addition to these spaces, the Crissmans also have a deck overlooking their backyard, as well as a small grill deck off of the kitchen. “Our neighborhood is just so great, and having space outside makes it even better.”

Spacious Seating Situated between the front door and the deck are the living room, dining room, and music room. With an open concept coming into play, the stone fireplace acts as one of the only barriers between spaces. “Our old house was very traditional and everything was compartmentalized. I just wanted something completely different,” said Marylisa. She went on to explain the open concept lends itself well to her love for cooking and hosting parties, which brought us to her favorite piece. “My favorite piece in the whole house is this table. I have had this table forever, but I could never find the square room for it,” said Marylisa. “But when we saw this house, it finally fit.” Whether you find yourself at the epic dining room table, or nestled on the couch, one thing you will never be devoid of is a view of the surrounding trees. “When the trees are in full bloom, like they are right now, you really can’t see much of the house from the street. That makes the inside even more private,” she said.

Besides the island, the kitchen consists of multiple windows that overlook the acreage, contributing to the idea of open coziness. “We’ve just had some great memories in this kitchen,” said Marylisa. “From baking Christmas cookies to curling up in the breakfast nook, it’s been really nice.”•

One step into The Cascade and you realize this isn’t like any other place to live in Sioux Falls. The five-story art deco-inspired space faces Falls Park West and already is forming its own community, drawn by amenities like we’ve never seen downtown. There’s the sprawling main floor, where residents can gather around a fire, plug in a laptop and work remotely, hold an impromptu work or fun meeting or start up a game of pool.

Soon, you’ll be able to walk directly into some of the businesses opening on the first floor – including cotton candy shop Candy Cloud factory, The Root Cellar convenience store and La Luna Café, which promises to become a foodie favorite. You’ll be able to pick up a new outfit at The Bloom Room Boutique, and – of course – grab a locally brewed beer at Severance Brewing Co. We knew The Cascade would be popular when it started leasing with a lottery party last summer – it was the only way developer and manager Lloyd Companies felt would be fair to decide who got to rent which unit first. “Some wanted the top floor for the most outstanding views of Falls Park. Others wanted first floor to make sure they could easily run the dog outside. But they all have been renting up fast,” said Laura

Walters, Cascade concierge. “We have some lofts left, but not many! And we have a new building under construction to the west that will bring more options for next year.” Adam Jorgensen and Sean Reif were some of the first to move in. “Uptown is just booming right now,” said Reif, 27, who sold his westside home to come downtown, where they moved to the nearby Phillips Avenue Lofts before coming to The Cascade. “The first week we lived on Phillips I felt like I was on vacation. It’s carefree living. I lived on the west side for 3.5 years and met two neighbors. Here we already know all our neighbors and have multiple friends living in the building.” They say they completely looked at every loft downtown before committing.

“The amenities The Cascade has are crazy,” said Jorgensen, who is 25. “And it’s new. It’s something that’s never been done before.” They went with a fifth-floor one-bedroom that they had a hand in customizing, with white cabinetry, marble granite counters and grey accents. On the fifth floor, they enjoy upgraded lighting, mirrors and appliances along with a gas fireplace. “We love it,” Reif said. “We picked it for the floor-to-ceiling windows and the big patio. We didn’t need a lot of space, so it’s a one-bedroom, but the windows facing the Falls were the big selling point.” All residents can enjoy the fifth-floor views thanks to the Metli Lounge, named for downtown lover and former city planning director Steve Metli. It’s a phenomenal indoor-outdoor space with a patio fireplace, drink rail, plenty of seating and amazing views of downtown, Falls Park and Levitt at the Falls. “We want you to feel like you’re on vacation when you return home,” Walters

said. “This whole community is about being able to unwind, bring your friends over or make new ones and just enjoy being part of the incredible energy we’re experiencing downtown.” The residents themselves are already building a community at The Cascade, too. Sara Romeo, 32, moved from the Phillips Avenue Lofts to The Cascade and brought the book club she started there with her. “I just love the atmosphere. I love downtown living.” Her new studio apartment is an easy walk to Falls Community Health, where she works as a colon cancer navigator in addition to working as an RN at Avera. “I’m really excited for the patio and the kitchen area where I can host some parties, plus the spinning and yoga classes that are coming,” she said. “I have a good history with Lloyd and I know they do great work thinking outside the box. I think the Cascade is working for the residents and filling lots of holes.”

SOUTH DAKOTA’S POD PEOPLE 5 0 \\\\\\\\\ A U G U S T

by Denise DePaolo

Podcasts are big. As of 2019, most Americans have given the former “little medium that could” a listen, thanks to a surge in mainstream popularity. They’re an opportunity to reach a targeted audience with niche programming, inspiring community growth on social media and in the real world. Whatever you’re interested in, there’s a show for you. And right here in South Dakota, creatives are sharing their passion with growing audiences.

en Hanten of Yankton is interested in the moments that define us—the “whys” and “hows” of the human experience. The Lanyard, named for the ubiquitous backstage pass vehicle, serves as a platform for the politico and marketer turned entrepreneur (Ben's Brewing Co.) and community advocate (@ILoveYankton) to invite local game-changers and decision makers to discuss their experiences, challenges, and breakthrough moments.

from Podcasters EE

“I have a ton of favorite podcasts, but three faves that I've listened to multiple times include: The Black Tapes, Limetown, and Spines. All three of these are fictional audio dramas with a spooky bent.” – Sarah Werner, host of Write Now and Girl in Space

EE

“I really enjoy Criminal with Phoebe Judge. It is an incredibly well-constructed show that takes a broad view of the definition of crime, and does so with a really compassionate and human point of view.” – Brian Bieber, host of Ghosts & Horses Radio Hour and producer of The 605 Show

EE

“Honestly, I wanted to hate Dax Shepard so badly, but his podcast, Armchair Expert, is one of my favorites. His interview style is so interesting, and I love how he sometimes takes his experience with alcoholics anonymous and uses that to talk and relate with guests. It’s effective and not too much.” - Alana Snyder, host of The 605 Show

Hanten looks for guests he wants to learn from. Up-and-comers are great and all, but he wants to hear the unique perspectives of people who’ve actually seen a thing or two. “They have to be people I'm genuinely interested in getting to know,” said Hanten. “My very first episode was with Sister Maribeth Wentzlaff, prioress at the Sacred Heart Monastery. I knew of her, but didn't know how she became a nun and some of the behind-the-scenes details—it was maybe my favorite episode so far.” He continued, “I also really loved the live episode with [singer/ songwriter] Matt Fockler. He told his stories about songwriting and performed four original songs.”

STREAM AT ANCHOR.FM/ THELANYARD.

Other notable moments include swapping “Bill Janklow stories” with former Lieutenant Governor Matt Michels in episode two, and Hanten’s unabashed fanboying over Rock Garden Tour’s Ted Heeren, as they discussed their mutual love of small-town South Dakota.

The Lanyard’s Ben Hanten interviews KSFY meteorologist Phil Schreck at KSFY’s studios in Sioux Falls.

Write Now HOSTED BY SARAH WERNER

W

riting is messy. It can be equal parts inspiration and self-doubt, triumph, and heartbreak. So often, we’re fed the idea that writers are a chosen few, struck by the proverbial lightning bolt—young Sylvester Stallone writing Rocky in a single weekend or Mary Shelley penning Frankenstein on a stormy night. Sioux Falls’ Sarah Werner’s Write Now podcast is here to shed light on the realities of being a writer—to say, “Yes, it’s hard. Yes, it takes time to hone your craft. But you can do it.” “Initially, the Write Now [with Sarah Werner] podcast was going to be an instructional podcast aimed at helping people my age— millennials—fit creative writing into a too-busy lifestyle,” said Werner, a writer and marketing professional. “Today, the show has evolved into a look at what it means to be a writer and live creatively.” Write Now’s premise is two-fold. In addition to serving as a resource for fellow writers, it’s a chronicle of Werner’s real-life creative journey developing the successful sci-fi drama serial podcast, Girl in Space. As Werner’s podcasts have taken shape, so has her career. In addition to thriving on the public speaking circuit, her Facebook group, I Am a Writer with Sarah Werner, is more than 2,200 members strong.

his is a show by friends for friends—at least, that’s how it feels. Listeners are invited in as co-hosts Alana Snyder and Vaney Hariri gleefully banter about the state of entertainment and culture in South Dakota.

Co-hosts Vaney Hariri and Alana Snyder of The 605 Show record with producer Brian Bieber at Wiley’s in downtown Sioux Falls.

Snyder is the founder and publisher of 605 Magazine and Hariri is a Sioux STREAM AT Falls-based entrepreneur (Think 3D 605MAGAZINE. Solutions) and musician (stage name: V COM/THE-605the Noble One). Along with producer SHOW. (and low-key comedy genius) Brian Bieber, they record in various bars, restaurants, and businesses throughout the state, inviting local movers and shakers to discuss their careers and upcoming events. The 605 Show keeps it light—playing games, sampling food and drink specialties, and having a lot of laughs with whoever stops by. “We’re breaking bread and we're learning,” said Hariri. “Alana as a writer and me as an entertainer, were infinitely curious. We really want to know, ‘How does this work? Beer Untapped HOSTED BY PERRY MILLER

W

hen Perry Miller began hosting Beer Untapped on Brookings Radio in 2014, South Dakota had “maybe four or five” craft breweries. Five years later, we can choose which local sixpack we’d like to bring to the barbecue—because more than two dozen breweries operate in the Mount Rushmore state. Clearly, Miller was on to something. Beer Untapped episodes are easily digestible five to eight-minute dives into the world of South Dakota craft beer. Miller is often joined by Wooden Legs Brewing Company co-owner Seth Koch to cover the news of the local brewing industry, beer trends, and general observations on various styles and techniques. Now that the show’s 200+ installments are available as podcast

episodes, Miller is bringing South Dakota beer to the rest of the world. And with the influx of new breweries in the state, there’s still plenty to talk about.

STREAM AT BROOKINGSRADIO.COM/CATEGORY/BEER-UNTAPPED.

“I think what they're doing right is they're doing really quality beer and they're making it easily accessible for people who haven't tried craft beer,” said Miller. He continued, “I think the best thing South Dakota brewers can do is continue to focus on quality and a diversity of styles. If there's diversity of styles, just about anybody is going to find a craft beer they like, and then they can go from there. Really, the craft beer that we can get here in South Dakota, it's as good as anywhere—and I've had craft beer from all over the country.”•

the Seafood Risotto with heirloom tomato, asparagus, shrimp, scallops, crab claws, and citrus beurre blanc. Another well known option is the Prime NY Strip with prime-grade beef, brown ale steak sauce, pearl onion confit, chive oil, bacon-wrapped asparagus, and dauphinoise potato.

This tourist season, the restaurant wants to make sure that everyone has a chance to try a few of the more gamey dishes like the Elk Ravioli served with mushroom, garlic, shallot, tomato, spinach, brown butter, sage, white wine, and Gruyère. To keep a bit of variety on the menu, the Grille switches the features about every three months. Holland says he likes to get some variety so customers can try new things.

For the summer, The Deadwood Grille has added dishes like the Shrimp Ceviche for a light, summer treat, which is especially good on a hot day. “You can’t serve the same stuff forever,” he said. Recent drink specials include the Prickly Pear Martini, a favorite to go with a meal or to simply sip on for cocktail hour. The restaurant also likes to showcase local beers that change with the seasons. Currently the restaurant has Fernson’s Lion’s Paw, The Knuckle Brewing Company’s Red Ale, and Lost Cabin’s Dakota Coal Mine on tap.

For even more options, customers can order off the menu from Oggie’s Sports Bar & Emporium, the restaurant next door, while dining at The Deadwood Grille.

COME VISIT

Chamberlain-Oacoma by Alana Snyder

T

raveling across the state, ChamberlainOacoma is a welcomed break, visually and physically. With the view of the Missouri River, it's breathtaking as you buzz through and/or stop for a bite (guilty for manya-stops at Al’s Oasis) or bathroom break. I wanted to see it through the eyes of a local or tourist, and decided to make the drive on I-90 on a Monday for a day trip on both sides of the Chamberlain Bridge. 6 4 \\\\\\\\\ A U G U S T

The first stop was the Arrowwood Resort & Conference Center at Cedar Shore in Oacoma. This remote, multiple-use location is known best for family reunions, natural scenery, corporate outings, and short vacation getaways. General manager Ron Madison says the location is prime with it being so central in South Dakota. “We’re right in the middle of the state, so people from Rapid City and people from Sioux Falls can meet in the middle and let everything go and relax,” he said, sitting with myself and director of sales and marketing Karla Brozik in the Bridges Restaurant.

The Bridges Restaurant is a place on campus to grab breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the Bridges Lounge is connected for a more casual appeal, if you’re wanting to simply have a small bite or Cedar Shore Cider. Brozik says she’s a fan of the Jack Daniels Burger, while Madison loves the fish. “I think we serve outstanding steaks, but I always eat the [Bridges] Walleye.” He continued, “We serve a lot of the Chicken Carbonara, though.” Cedar Shore Resort opened its doors in the summer of 1995. It offers a hotel, conference center, a full-service

marina, and a campground all on a 40-acre campus. There are also eight sleeping cabins and two cottages. “What we have is a place where you can actually sit back and relax. We’re going to bring you great service, but you’re able to chill and have a good time,” said Madison. “You can have dinner out on the deck, the tiki bar is always open, and on weekends we have entertainment out there.” What he’s referring to is the Waterfront Grill & Tiki Bar.

Since I’m nine months pregnant in the middle of the summer, it was nice to pretend to be in the outdoors as I had lunch in the air conditioning. My eyes fixed right on the Mozzarella Sticks. They were thick and short, and weren’t the greasy bar-type of mozzarella sticks. I almost thought they seemed baked, so I did more investigating and ate three more. Consuming almost the entire basket before John got to them, I didn’t really have more information, but I was satisfied. Next were the Fried Pickles. This is more John’s wheelhouse, as fried pickles always make me nervous. They’re sometimes soggy, but I had higher hopes as these were pickle spears and not slices. Those get mushy real quick. John took a bite and said, “It’s a really good balance between the breading and the pickle. I would crush these.” He was correct. They were crunchy and very easy to bite into. For our third appetizer (holy cow), we had the Wood Fired Italian Nacho. This included homemade fried wonton chips smothered with mozzarella, pepperoni, black olives, banana peppers, drizzled with pizza sauce, and baked by the fire. The wonton chips were light and not soggy, which was shocking since we waited so long to eat them. Everything tasted fresh, and I didn’t get flustered by the toppings, even though there were a lot.

74 \\\\\\\\\ A U G U S T

“It’s like adding 50 percent pizza to nachos. It’s a good marriage,” said John. At this point, it was insane that we still had more. We nibbled on the Chicken Wings, which can come with sauces like BBQ, Sweet Chili, Buffalo, Parmesan Garlic, and are served with carrots and celery. We got the sweet chili wings, which were tangy and were, in fact, sweet. “I wouldn’t eat them on a date, but then again I wouldn’t ever eat wings on a date,” said John about dating to his wife. Moving on. It’s hard to even touch on all of the pizza we had because they were individually all delicious, but the unique offerings stood out more than, let’s say, the 12-inch Pepperoni. There are two choices for crust—thin and crispy or thick and doughy. You can get the 12-inch, or go more personally sized with the 7-inch. My favorite is thin, and John loves thick, so this was a win to try both. Our thin pizzas included Greek and Chicken Bacon Ranch. The Greek was beautiful to look at and even better to taste. It had olive oil, mozzarella, spinach, artichokes, tomatoes, black olives, feta cheese, and a balsamic drizzle. When it says tomatoes, it’s fresh tomatoes. Like right from the farmers’ market type situation. And the balsamic glaze made the whole pizza.

We discussed how, though it’s thin crust, it’s not the kind where you don’t know where to grab the pizza and it actually adds to the taste and isn’t just a crunchy bottom that holds the toppings. The Chicken Bacon Ranch had ranch, mozzarella, grilled chicken, bacon, tomatoes, and cheddar. This is definitely a hit for bacon lovers, and this whole place is good for ranch lovers, because ranch is on a lot of options and can be used as a sauce with pretty much everything. Next were the thick and doughy options, which were the Buffapeño and the Meatlovers. Meatlovers was the standard pepperoni, sausage, and canadian bacon. It was very good, but I was looking forward to trying the Buffapeño. This had cream cheese, mozzarella, buffalo chicken, jalapeño, pineapple, bacon, banana peppers, cheddar, blue cheese crumbles, and a ranch drizzle. It was kind of crazy how many flavors and ingredients the Buffapeño had. For only $10, I almost felt like I was stealing. John had actually forgotten we were doing the review and had eaten this pizza the day before and wouldn’t stop raving about it. And after trying it, I get it.

The Jones421 building is a great idea for so many reasons. In 2019, everyone wants a unique experience and quality, but they want it fast. Need to pretend that you remembered someone’s birthday? Grab a gorgeous bouquet at Bella Rosa. Want European gelato? Stop by Boki. And now, take home quality, wood-fired pizza at Papa Woody’s. Bonus? They also have solid merchandise and signs that joke about wearing bigger pants (but really, it helps the eating experience).

Papa Woody’s pizzas range from $10-$15, which is so cheap for the quality. Nothing is above $20, but your tab will add up once you order all of the appetizers, because you should.

With pizzas like the Greek and Buffapeño, you can experiment or go with traditional, like Pepperoni. Everything is fresh out of the oven, but options from the fryer are quality as well. Everything came out crunchy and fresh, and I heard amazing things about the Chicken Tenders with Fries.

FAMILY EVENTS AUGUST 2019

Dear Sloan BY KYLE DETERMAN

Oh my sweet girl, how has it already been one whole year? It feels like just yesterday I was in your room, arranging your mountain of books into piles of must-reads and favorites, imagining all the time we would spend exploring magical worlds and underwater castles. Back when I didn’t know your eyes or the feeling of your deep breaths upon my chest, or even the way you smile in your sleep. All of the things I didn’t know I needed. Pulling up to the hospital to be induced, the unknown territory had left me a bundle of nerves and doubt. Doubt in my ability to get through the next 24 hours, doubt in my ability to feel the way I was expected to feel, and doubt in my ability to be everything you needed me to be.

My hair was straightened and my makeup was applied, and I was ready to make trendy videos of me walking the halls of the labor and delivery ward. My playlist softly looped in the background, and as your arrival got closer, my ability to stay in control got further and further away. In reality, it was a long and terrifying process that left me feeling exhausted and scared. I loved you, that I knew. What I didn’t know was that everything from this moment on would be different. I wasn’t prepared for the onslaught of emotions, or the physical toll labor would take on my body. Or the fact that even though I was no longer pregnant, my body was still yours. Actually, everything was yours. My attention, my energy, and most of all, my love.

FIND CARTOONS OR EDUCATIONAL SHOWS THAT YOU CAN TOLERATE AND ENJOY. SOME OF OUR FAVORITES INCLUDE THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS, PUFFIN ROCK, AND DOC MCSTUFFINS. From the first moment your tiny, blushed fingers wrapped around my thumb, to now (your fingers longer and slimmer, holding on for just a brief moment while you regain your balance before you stagger away), I have loved you. Sloan Emerson, these first 12 months of your life have been the very best of mine. Not a day goes by that you don’t amaze me. Your neverending sense of wonder leaves me asking questions I should have always been asking. Your attention to everything around you reminds me to always be self-aware. Your innate desire to try new things gives me courage to explore all the possibilities that life presents. The list of things you have taught me goes on and on, and for that I will always be grateful. Thank you for giving me the chance to watch you become the person you're meant to be. From the curls that frame your cheeks to the way you grip your toes when you’re excited, every ounce of your being is purposefully wonderful.

9 4 \\\\\\\\\ A U G U S T

Your entire life is ahead of you, and after experiencing just one year, I can't wait to see what happens next. But don’t be fooled, no part of me is wishing away the days of reading the same book 19 times or playing with your hair once you’ve fallen asleep. Because these small moments are what make me love you more and more each day. Though you may lose the way you wobble around the living room, or the way you mumble “mama” when you're laying in your crib, I hope you never lose you. I will give it my all to teach you how important it is to be kind and to stay true to yourself. I will strive to always be honest with you and to listen when you feel unheard. But most of all, I will always love you. Happy 1st birthday.

Love, Mama

YES, ALL THREE OF THESE GUYS ARE NAMED JOHN. YES, IT WAS A POPULAR NAME IN THE ‘80S. THE IDENTITIES OF THESE THREE AMIGOS HAVE BEEN ALTERED TO PROTECT THE INNOCENT. HAVE A QUESTION FOR THE JOHNS? SHOOT AN E-MAIL THEIR WAY: THEJOHNS@605MAGAZINE.COM.

JR: Usually this happens to me because Mom is doing a laundry day. It’s a very real thing. JW: Tell this mooch that she

has to prepay for food now. Her house credit account is canceled. JT: If she does it again, mention something. If she does it again after that, maybe forget to call her again.

MY BOYFRIEND TAKES SEVERAL HOURS TO TEXT ME BACK. THIS IS GETTING TO BE ANNOYING. HOW DO I TELL HIM THAT HE NEEDS TO BE MORE PROMPT ABOUT TEXTING ME BACK WITHOUT SEEMING PUSHY? JR: Several hours to put together a response? It sounds romantic to me! JW: Do like those pushy invoice people do and send an automated follow up every 10 minutes saying, “Your loved one has sent you a text message, please respond promptly." They can get progressively more aggressive. JT: Some people just aren’t

great at texting. My brother (though I see him constantly on his phone in person) apparently throws his cell phone in the river every time I text him.

I THINK I MIGHT BE ADDICTED TO DATING APPS. HOW DO I CONTROL MY URGE TO SWIPE LEFT AND RIGHT? JR: I don’t feel bad window shopping at the mall. Is there really a difference? JW: Don’t! Get out there and smash. There are many of us married folk that only get to use dating apps infrequently. And when we do, we get crap from people. Like, I get it Karen, I’m married. I shouldn’t be smashing strangers. I’ll try to cut back, chill out. JT: It’s always nice to take breaks from your phone and social media in general. Honestly, you might be desensitizing yourself to dating and/or really looking for a genuine relationship. Take a week off and see how it goes.
