It was a beautiful, sunny day this past June 19th, perfect for this year’s Juneteenth Music Festival. Revelers were out as early as 9am to view the annual Parade that begins near Manual High School and ends in Historic Five Points. The Parade featured groups as varied as the Denver Fire Department & dance group Samba Colorado. One could find beads, African garb, as well as booths promoting healthcare and wellness. And the food…the smell of BBQ permeated the air. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which had become official January 1, 1863. Historically held on Welton Street, Juneteenth was first celebrated in Denver in the 1950s. The event peaked in the mid-80s, but has undergone a resurgence over the past four years under the leadership of Norm Harris III. –Maulud Sadiq
