Proud Recipient of the Dr. Syl Morgan Smith Excellence in Media Award, the Colorado Black Roundtable Commitment to Service Award and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Colorado Media Award
Black soldiers have fought in every U.S. battle, war and skirmish since the inception of the country. Sadly, many of their stories are untold. Wallace Simpson was ship steward during WWI and the first Black Colorado soldier to die as a result of the USS Jacob Jones being torpedoed in 1918. Veterans returned home from fighting in segregated troops to a segregated society. Black veterans were excluded from American Legion Post 1, so the Wallace Simpson American Legion Post 29 was created in Five Points. They continue to meet the first Saturday of each month.
