PAT FISCHER NISSAN

MANAGER’S CORNER
Dear TGO Residents,
The Spring weather here at TGO is warm and dry, and our wildlife are active. Alligators are moving between lakes in search of mates. Baby deer are being born around our community. Sandhill cranes and their colts are searching for food along our busy entrance road. Our chief pond monitor Ron Peoples led a fish restocking effort last week where we released 3200 blue gills and 16,000 gambusia minnows into Lake Judy and Lake Mockingbird. It’s a beautiful time to be living in TGO, but please keep a safe distance from our wildlife, and drive slowly!

Our marketing campaign called “Golf & Dine at TGO” started last week and will continue through the summer season. The Golf Shop team are doing a wonderful job of promoting this special offer to our golfers when they purchase their greens fees at the counter. Blue Heron staff are happy to see more golfers enjoying our great food and friendly service. As a reminder, this promotion includes a $5 hospitality credit for every golfer who purchases a greens fee. The goal is to encourage golfers to spend money and time at the Blue Heron following their golf to enjoy our hospitality and support our Blue Heron team during this slow season.
The spring season is project season! This past week, we replaced the roof on our Wastewater Treatment Plant Laboratory, and earlier this week, we began a project to address erosion along the shoulders of our entrance road. We are packing material along certain sections of our road shoulders to prevent further erosion. Later this year when the rains come, we will lay down some sod to beautify the road and prevent future erosion. This week, we expect roofers to begin replacing the flat roof on our Blue Heron kitchen, and we will also replace the gutters around our entire clubhouse building. This week, we’re beginning the Manor pool filtration project. These projects are examples of your assessment dollars hard at work! Please let me know if you have any questions.
This issue of The Happenings is the final issue produced and edited by Greg Wostrel. Greg has served as The Happenings editor for one year, and he has done a wonderful job writing editorials, taking beautiful photos, coordinating information, and developing unique layouts. Please help me thank Greg for his hard work, his talent, and most importantly, his genuine interest in our community. I wish Greg the very best in his future endeavors. I also welcome Tim and Cindy Clark back, as they will again resume their hard work in building the future issues of The Happenings. The contact information for submitting information to The Happenings does not change, it’s still happenings@tgocsa.com.
Sincerely,

CSA Manager

The Happenings is ©2025 The Great Outdoors CSA
The Community Services Association (CSA) strives to provide exceptional management of The Great Outdoors Premier RV/ Golf Resort, Inc., to maintain the status of the Resort as a first class community by upholding our community guidelines, providing quality amenities and services to enrich our residents’ quality of life, maintaining and improving our facilities, and protecting the future of the community
FROM THE EDITOR
Before I became the editor of The Happenings, I’ll admit—I had only the vaguest idea of what lay beyond that long entry road into The Great Outdoors.
I knew there was a golf course and a community tucked away back there, and I happened to know a few folks who worked in the area. But beyond that? Not much. So when I was given the opportunity to take on The Happenings, I saw it as more than just a creative project—it was a chance to get to know this unique and vibrant place from the inside.
And what a place it is! Over the past 13 months, I’ve had the pleasure of discovering the beehive of activity that makes The Great Outdoors so special. From community events and resident adventures to the friendly faces that fill every corner, it has truly been a joy to be part of this world—even if just for a little while.

As some of you may already know, this is my final issue as editor. I’m happy to share that The Happenings will be returning to the very capable hands of its former editors, Tim and Cindy Clark. I know they’ll guide it forward with their usual mix of dedication and experience, and the transition will be smooth and seamless.
Getting to know the CSA team, the residents, and all those who make this community tick has been both a pleasure and a privilege. It’s been fun, it’s been challenging in the best of ways, and most of all, it’s been incredibly rewarding. Thank you for being so welcoming, so encouraging, and so wonderfully kind throughout this journey.

Golf Carts in TGO: Slow Down & Make Those Stops
As you all know there are many golf carts here in TGO and they are always zipping around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, serious golf cart injuries are on the rise to the tune of approximately 13,000 per year requiring emergency room visits. Luckily, here in TGO, we haven’t had many serious mishaps and we hope this good record continues. Please don’t be a statistic; stop at stop signs, control your speed, and do not turn corners at high speeds.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES
Emergency Vehicle Protocol

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED
The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.
AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.
The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.
TGO has eight AEDs located at CSA buildings.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES
CSA Trash Pick Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:
• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.
• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.
• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.
• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.
• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.
• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.
• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris.
The crew has to pick this up!
• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!
CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.
Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.
Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO
There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:
• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.
• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.
• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.
• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.
• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.
• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

WILDFIRE THREAT: LOOK OUT THE WINDOW!

I know that you have been following the wildfire warnings on the TV news reports. They talk about the dry conditions in Central Florida, particularly on the St John’s River Flood Plain. When you have low humidity, the possibility of strong winds and very dry vegetation, you have the essential ingredients for a Florida Style Wildfire. So where is this FLOOD PLAIN?
Look out the window! You are living on it! It’s beautiful! ‘Not so beautiful, if it is burning toward you—and Fast!
Many wildfires start by the roadside where road trash (leaves, twigs, discarded cigarettes) can provide the fuel for a fire. All that is Missing in the wildfire recipe is a Source Of Ignition, a SPARK. This spark can be provided by a smoldering cigarette.
It is difficult to effectively snuff out a smoke while watching the news on the car computer, checking the rear view mirrors for traffic, dealing with crossing, stopping, misguided traffic, road signs, pedestrians, lost animals, out-of-control drivers, bike riders, children, a world of distractions and crazies! So you chuck that almost finished smoke out the window. Out of sight; out of mind…until 11 o’cloc k news!

The areas of particular concern for discarded cigarette-sparked fires in TGO are parcels of land that have been set aside to remain in their natural condition.

Announcing the 2025-2026 Event Schedule!

TGO VARIETY SHOW 2025
The spotlight was on in March as The Great Outdoors hosted its annual Variety Show—a much-anticipated event that brought talent, laughter, music, and a whole lot of heart to the stage. Under the dedicated direction of Rich Peraza, the show came together beautifully, with two evenings of performances that celebrated the incredible talents of our very own residents.
From comedy sketches and musical numbers to toe-tapping dance routines and unexpected surprises, the show had something for everyone. Rich and his team worked tirelessly behind the scenes to pull it all together, and the result was pure entertainment. The energy, creativity, and community spirit on display reminded us all just how vibrant and talented The Great Outdoors truly is. Enjoy this look back at some of the memorable moments from the show!

X (AND A,B,C...) MARKS THE SPOT!
You may have noticed all the new lettered signs along the MultiUse Nature Trail recently. This project, approved by the Nature Trail Committee and CSA, will help identify specific areas of concern such as fence damage, brush clearing area, medical emergency, hurt animal location, flooded area, Firewise control burn location, Nature Center Trail Entrance location, etc. On April 9, Scott Lewis and Dennis Waters mounted the alphabet letters equally along the Nature Trail starting just beyond the Raccoon entrance and ending just short of the Addison entrance. A measuring wheel was used to enable them to be accurately placed evenly along the trail.
Thank you everyone on the Nature Trail Committee Team for improving the Nature Trail and keeping it in great condition for us all to enjoy.
Here’s the letter “I” - and there is a Gopher Tortoise mound behind it! A great reason why these lettered markers will be valuable in identifying nature along the trail.

NATURE UPDATES
#86 GOPHER TORTOISE HATCHLING
The baby Gopher Tortoise we wrote about in the prior Happenings issue is doing well, according to TGO Gopher Tortoise expert Dr. Bob Taylor. The hatchling tortoise #86 has started two shallow burrows but has not dug one deep enough to move into yet. Bob believes the dry weather and hardness of the ground is probably slowing him down. Bob checks on him frequently. We will keep you posted on his progress!
PURPLE MARTIN NESTING PAIRS UPDATE
Scott Akers inspected one of the Purple Martin gourd nest poles this week and checked six gourds. He found eggs in two of them, and nests under construction in several. He completed his inspection quickly and efficiently so the pairs could continue their work. According so Scott, the nesting season looks good so far!

INSPECTION OF POTENTIAL OCCUPIED BURROWS
Alert homeowners contacted The Nature Center President Betty Salter to examine a burrow to make sure it wasn’t occupied by wildlife. Betty knew it was dug by an armadillo. “This is spring and baby season,” She explains, “and I was making sure the burrow was unoccupied so it could be filled in. Armadillos leave their young in the burrow to feed themselves then return later to nurse their babies.” Betty used her special inspection camera to get photos inside of the hole to make sure it was empty before advising the homeowner they could safely fill it in with soil.

INTERNET SALES VOLUNTEERS KEEP SANDY JUBA’S LEGACY MOVING FORWARD!
For years, Sandy Juba has single-handedly collected used items from TGO residents such as furniture, small appliances, etc. and posted items for sale on multiple internet sales platforms. Please help keep her legacy moving forward.
Sandy is training volunteers to learn what she has done, and has broken the tasks down:
• Picking up donated items and bringing them to the storage unit - we could use some guys to help. And someone with a truck would be great!
• Taking photos and dimensions for the posts
• Posting items online and meet with potential buyers
If you can help with any of these tasks, let Sandy know!
ALL PROCEEDS from these internet sales are donated to the Nature Center. This provides a substantial amount of income used for Nature Center maintenance, utilities, programs, security, supplies, and upkeep.
If you would like to volunteer or have any questions, please contact Sandy Juba at 321-543-0502.

SANDY JUBA
THE HEART OF THE TGO NATURE CENTER
Contributed by Linda Day
Sandy Juba’s Hard Work And Passion For Nature Has Helped Make The Great Outdoors
The Extraordinary Place It Is Today.
How can anyone adequately describe Sandy Juba’s tireless volunteer efforts, her contributions to the TGO Nature Center, and the wildlife she has rescued?
Passionate, caring, nurturing, take-charge, courageous, giving, life-learner, educator - and this is only a start to describe this amazing woman.

Sandy grew up in Massachusetts with her four siblings, and remembers always being outside in nature. She especially loved playing in the woods. She loved exploring and had no fear of wild animals. When Sandy found a snake, she would run home and show it to her mother.
Her family always had pets, and one of her favorites was a beloved pet sheep named Sooty. Unknown to Sandy, the lamb was entered in a “sandwich fair,” and it came back to her home in packages. To this day, Sandy cannot eat lamb.
Sandy worked as an administrative aide for Polaroid in Massachusetts for 33 years. They offered her entire office a layoff package, and although Polaroid didn’t want her to leave, she was ready to retire and relocate to Florida. She met her husband Jack, who had an RV, and they started traveling. When she arrived in Florida, Sandy immediately started enjoying nature and the outdoors going on hikes, kayaking, birding, and biking. At TGO, she joined the fledgling nature center organization. “That was 27 years ago!” Sandy recalls, “People who were involved immediately saw my passion for nature and wanted me to get involved. I have been president and vice president of the Nature Center and have been very active from the very beginning.”
THE FOUNDING OF THE NATURE CENTER
Sandy commented, “When I moved here, the nature center was not as you know it now. It was a little hunting cabin owned by Jim Swann. People painted it and tried to fix it up, but at any moment we were afraid we would fall through the old wooden floors. It was pretty rough!” She added, “But a lot of the taxidermy that’s in the Nature Center today was in that old cabin.”
Sandy and a group of others had passion and a vision for a new, modern nature center and established it as it is today. On April 16, 2006, The Nature Center at the Great Outdoors was incorporated with Sandy Juba listed as incorporator. Then it went on to become an educational 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to promote awareness, appreciation and conservation of nature. The Great Outdoors and CSA have never funded the Nature Center, and finding additional money to construct a new building was difficult. The group worked hard to get donations, but they got to a point where it seemed they were going to have to give money back

because they couldn’t afford to continue the project. Then miraculously, a generous donor gave $170,000 to finish the Nature Center building!
Sandy became an officer of the new Nature Center and a guide for trail hikes. She soon discovered a lot of wildlife was injured or sick and needed help. There was someone at that time, who was supposedly helping with wildlife but Sandy discovered this person was actually destroying the animals so he didn’t have to put any effort into helping them. Fortunately he moved away, and that’s when Sandy jumped into action, learning all she could about animal rescue and rehabilitation. She started working with a network of local “rehabbers,” and her work rescuing wildlife took off from there. Incredibly, all of Sandy’s wildlife rescue knowledge was developed after she retired and became involved with the Nature Center.
SANDY’S WILDLIFE RESCUES
Sandy has rescued countless animals and has worked diligently to research and establish a group of wildlife rehabilitation experts who help her with wildlife in need. Among her many wildlife rehabilitation experts is her good friend Carol Hardee who operates the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Central Florida in Christmas. She has also volunteered with the Florida Wildlife Hospital. Sandy also has the authority to euthanize animals, if absolutely necessary. For an animal lover like Sandy, she says “it’s is really hard to do.”
Sandy reflects, “Some of my first, and most common rescues involved snakes wrapped in the plastic fencing. I keep telling people not to use this plastic fencing! Animals get tangled in it, especially black racer snakes.” She continued, “A lot of anhingas also got into trouble because there were actually pieces of carpet in the water here, and they were becoming entangled in their beaks. It takes a lot of time to help them get this carpet off their beak. The lakes all through TGO are filled with dangerous trash that animals can get caught in.”
Her most unusual rescue, without question, is when she removed a rat snake from someone’s toilet. She has special equipment to enable her to rescue snakes. Her friend Chris Miller helps her rescue the big rattle snakes and says the six foot rattlesnake rescues are the most difficult “but you just have to be careful.” Sandy says, “After they are rescued, we relocate them to a safe place away from people. However, recent laws have passed requiring a license that is difficult to acquire to relocate rattlesnakes.”
Another time, she found turtle that had died. The entire shell was opened up and she could see eggs inside. She put her hands inside the body of the turtle, retrieved the eggs, and buried them. She doesn’t know if any of them made it, but she hopes she gave them a chance.

She says it was especially hard when she had to deal with animals with distemper. Distemper is not as common now, she says, but we occasionally discover an animal with the disease. Sandy reminds people, “When you see raccoons out in the day, you might think it has distemper, but don’t be alarmed as it is usually a mother with babies.”
Most of the wildlife she sends to rehabbers are not returned to TGO. However she said there was once a bald eagle that was returned, and that was very rewarding.

DON’T FEED WARNING
Many people may be aware of Lidia, the whitetail deer which was tangled in a trash can lid.
After a long struggle to locate her, she was seen attempting to eat at a “feeding station” behind a house. The person in that house had been asked to stop feeding the deer, but they wouldn’t stop. When Lidia came to eat with the other deer she was attacked by the dominant deer. The next morning she was found dead. Sandy says sadly, “We ask so many times, but people don’t listen. This deer’s horrible death was caused by this person putting out food.”
SANDY’S FAVORITE WILDLIFE
Sandy has some favorite wildlife and is especially fond of bats. She has a bat box directly behind her home which she maintains and enjoys. She realizes their importance, and encourages other TGO residents to establish bat boxes in their yards. Sandy says, “I have a special affinity for bats. I have a pole outside my house and there are always bats in there. I try to save as many as I can. I had a baby fall out of the box once, and a CSA person with a ladder helped me get it back in the box. The little bat and I were so grateful!”
Sandy also loves bees. She says, “I’ve also rescued a lot of bees. I even have a bee suit to put on! I’ve gotten to know a lot of bee experts who come out and rescue the honey bees. I’ll get a call and someone will ask for help removing them. It’s a bit expensive to have the bees removed, but it’s worth it. These creatures need help. And we would die without them.”
SANDY IS THE FOUNDER OF TORTOISEVILLE
On entering Sandy’s porch, you will see all kinds of seedlings sprouting in various containers which she has planted. She is growing these plants herself in order to save money and add to the newly dedicated Tortoiseville.

Sandy commented on this recent project, “I love tortoises. I noticed that there was tortoise activity on the hill on the doggy trail. No one was doing anything about it, and I caught members of Florida Power and Light plowing down the whole area, burying the tortoises in their burrows. I kept trying to find someone to talk to at FPL. I started putting stakes in the ground at their burrows. I made tortoise signs saying that it was a habitat for tortoises. So I just did the best I could until FPL agreed to protect the area. Eventually other people like Betty Salter joined in, and it really got going. That is what is known as Tortoiseville today. It’s a thriving tortoise community. Babies are hatching, and we are numbering them and know which hole they live in, their gender, etc. It was just me seeing something and doing something. We removed the invasive weeds and have planted things the tortoises like to eat.”

SANDY WOULD BE OVERJOYED IF YOU WOULD:
• DONATE FURNITURE APPLIANCES OR OTHER UNWANTED ITEMS to the Nature Center. Contact Sandra Miraglia at moon001414@hotmail.com or 727483-2493 until May 16. Otherwise save your items until October. Keep in mind the Nature Center is a separate entity from TGO and is not supported by it or CSA.
• BECOME A MEMBER OF THE NATURE CENTER, attend trail hikes and speaker programs. Sandy says “It is very rewarding and it’s never too late to get involved in the Nature Center. I did it after I retired and started learning.”
• ERECT A BAT BOX IN TGO. Wouldn’t it be great if we could have six bat houses underway by the end of the year? Hint: Maybe your condo or group can get together and erect one in Sandy’s honor?

• IF YOU SEE SOMEONE FEEDING AN ANIMAL, REPORT THEM. Sandy says she does not hesitate to report people violating this, whether she knows them or not.
• DONATE money for plants and the upkeep for Tortoiseville. Contact Betty Salter at 321-223-8073.
Sandy will be relocating to Melbourne for health reasons possibly later this year. She will leave an enormous wealth of information behind. She would be grateful to anyone with the passion and courage to step into some of her wildlife rescue roles.
Please contact her directly if you are interested in keeping her wildlife rescue legacy alive at TGO.

Apple Tips #9
WHY I USE APPLE PAY FOR EVERYTHING (Except Bingo…)

I remember when Apple first talked about a simple merchant payment method using only an iPhone. I eagerly watched the development, security protocols and waited for which local stores would be on board with this new and critical technology. It took a while, BUT…
Turns out, Apple Pay is a financial game-changer! it’s a simple, safe, and quick way to make purchases and payments without fumbling for cash or a credit card. BUT IS IT SAFE??
I did a boatload of research on HOW Apple Pay has security which is considered the best in the digital industry, never having a breach in Apple’s core systems. This privacy protocol includes accelerated encryption, two-factor authentication (2FA), and tokenization (creates a unique “token” (a randomly generated 16-character string of numbers, letters, emojis, and symbols) It’s essentially a one-time-use “credit card number” that’s only valid for that particular purchase and disappears at the close of the transaction.
How to Set Up Apple Pay: A
Simple Step-by-Step Guide
1. Open Settings: Tap the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Go to Wallet & Apple Pay: Scroll down and select Wallet & Apple Pay.
3. Add a Card: Tap Add Card. If this is your first time, you’ll see a prompt to add a credit or debit card.
4. Scan Your Card: Use your iPhone or iPad’s camera to scan your card. If the scan doesn’t work, you can enter the card details manually.
5. Verify Your Card: Your bank or card issuer will send a verification code. Enter that code to confirm your card.
6. Set Up Apple Pay on Apple Watch (Optional): If you have an Apple Watch, you can also set up Apple Pay for easy payments on the go! Open the Watch app, tap Wallet & Apple Pay, and follow the same steps.
7. Activate Apple Pay: Before trying to use Apple Pay, double-check that it’s activated by going to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay and making sure your card is listed.
8. Start Using Apple Pay: Once your card is added and Apple Pay is activated, you’re all set!
To use Apple Pay, simply double-click the right side (power) button, tap the card you wish to use (if multiple cards in Wallet) and hold it near the payment reader at the register. It works not just at McDonald’s, but at thousands of stores, online, and even in apps.
For person-to-person payments, you must have a DEBIT card in your Apple Wallet.
Open the Messages app, select your friend (or your favorite Apple Tech ), and tap the Apple Cash icon to send money. There is NO FEE to use either Apple Pay, nor to send or receive Apple Cash!
Side note: In 2023 I drove all the way around the United States using ONLY my Apple Wallet to pay for all my gas, food and lodging, basically everything. BUT, 2 hotels REQUIRED a physical credit card and BOTH times I got hacked on that card!!! Stay safe….Use Apple Pay!

BCSO CITIZENS ACADEMY 3: DIVERS & AVIATION

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office continues to bring excitement and education to The Great Outdoors through its weekly Citizens Academy sessions. Each visit features presentations from two specialized divisions, giving residents a closer look at the tools, training, and people behind public safety in our county.
On April 17, the spotlight was on the Dive Team, who gave an impressive live demonstration right in the pool, and Chief Pilot Coppola, who made quite the entrance—landing a helicopter on site before sharing insights about the Aviation Unit.

The following week, on April 24, Deputy Caudill wowed the crowd with the high-tech capabilities of the Bomb Squad robot, while Director Hellebrand and Officers Williams and Kaufman of Animal Services introduced residents to the vital work they do—and to two adorable canine ambassadors who melted hearts on the spot.
These sessions are not only informative—they’re also a great way for residents to connect with the men and women who serve Brevard County. From high-flying helicopters to bomb-defusing robots and tail-wagging guests, each presentation offers a fascinating glimpse into the diverse roles within the Sheriff’s Office. We’re grateful for their time, expertise, and commitment to keeping our community safe—and we look forward to the final round of engaging presentations.

Funny Thing Is… Aging Is A Scientific Mystery!
When people used to tell me I’m all wet it was an insult. As the weather heats up I’m happy to hear it because it means I’m getting out of a pool or the beach. I used to love bodysurfing in the ocean when I was younger. Now it knocks me around so much the only waves I deal with are reserved for when pretty girls walk by. Do you know how exhausted ocean swimmers clean themselves? They wash up on shore. I know bad pun.
Have you noticed that teachers don’t swim? They only dip their toes in the water to “test it.” Hey folks, you can get a lot of material for standup comedy if you just talk to an elementary school kid and write everything down.
My grandkids tell me fish keep their money in riverbanks. They say zombies only swim in The Dead Sea. It’s funny to sit by a pool and watch the cycle of life pass right before your eyes. You see infants using floats to keep from drowning while wearing diapers. Then kids learning to swim without the floats. People in their 20’s and 30’s using no equipment while showing their athletic abilities. People in their 40’s and 50’s using floats with adult beverage holders on them. Then when we get to social security age we’re back to using floats to keep from drowning
while wearing diapers. My doctor told me not to swim for 20 minutes after eating. I outsmarted him because I got right in and stayed on my back so I wouldn’t be swimming on a full stomach. Did you know swimming is the only competitive race where nobody runs? Did you also know vegetarians never compete in swimming? True. They don’t like meets. Somebody stop me.

Ok so what type of swim suits do lumberjacks wear? Tree trunks. And what’s the favorite detergent to clean swim suits? Tide. I got slapped in the face the other day at a public swim pool because I misunderstand what a breast stroke was. Ok I’m getting older and I’m a little mixed up. So take a lap this summer and dive into your nearest pool or beach. Sink or swim you’ll be floating on a cloud of water because just remember seven days without swimming in the heat makes one weak.
Dr. Sammy

Hearing Loss Treatment is Essential
The tide is turning and more and more people are recognizing the value of treating even mild hearing loss. Yet, people still wait an average of seven years to treat their hearing loss.
Why get tested and treated if you’re still able to get by?
Here are the reasons:
• Better hearing may protect you from dementia, raise your income, guard against depression and help you stay socially active.
• Hearing aids today are so advanced they make it possible for most people to hear in very crowded, noisy situations.
•
• Early intervention “trains” your ears when they are most able, setting you up for more effective treatment and better hearing.
•Hearing
•
• The hearing checkup is free and painless.
•

“I look forward to meeting you and your loved one. Together we will find a solution to your hearing problems.”
