MANAGER’S CORNER

Dear TGO Residents,

February 7, 2025

The Annual Meeting and CSA Elections are now behind us now. Please join me in thanking our outgoing Chairman Cliff Creech for the leadership and hard work he provided during his term as Chairman. Congratulations to incoming Chairman Tom Wheir, and to our re-elected board members and ARC members on their elections. Tom is a common-sense leader with a big heart for TGO and our owners. He will do an outstanding job of leading the community as we prepare for future challenges.

The weather has warmed up in February, and our community is in high gear right now with so many activities, events and clubs. Last week the Activities Committee hosted their annual 5K sponsored by Parrish Hospital, and this issue shares some nice photos of that event. The golf course is jam-packed every day and our Blue Heron Restaurant is busy as well. This issue features our new Blue Heron Restaurant menus. Tom Collins, our restaurant manager, is now serving several ½ portion lunch and dinner dishes at a lower cost. These ½ portion dishes are very popular with our customers, because many here at TGO have smaller appetites. This issue also features the Blue Heron Breakfast Menu. Breakfast is offered Tuesday – Saturday from 7am-11am in the Café, and this setting offers a beautiful view of the sunrise over our golf course in the mornings.

January was cold and wet, but February is proving to be warmer, so we have turned irrigation back on in our community. I have added our irrigation status onto our website at www.tgocsa.org so you can check the status at any time. Several homes on Windsong Way along the nature trail have seen hog damage behind their homes. We are also seeing increased damage to our garbage area in the maintenance yard from raccoon activity, so CSA has stepped up our Critter Control efforts recently. Finally, Courtesy Patrol is seeing increased speeding activity, so we have increased radar patrol, and in January we wrote a record 47 speeding citations.

I was attending a Condo Annual Meeting recently, and a homeowner reminded me about the importance of displaying your home address numbers clearly and visibly on your property, especially for emergency vehicles and during storms. If needed, the CSA maintenance team will re-paint address numbers on your driveways, simply call us for a work-order. We only use white paint, so if your driveway is treated, or you prefer another color or design, please seek other options. We are happy to lend you our number stencils if you want to repaint the numbers yourself. If you wish to attach new street numbers on an existing post or exterior building, you do not need ARC approval.

There’s a “special day” approaching and we’re celebrating it with our very own special Valentines Day couple on page 37.

As always, Please contact me if you have questions or I can be of assistance to you,

Sincerely,

FROM THE EDITOR

Last weekend was the TGO 5K and Wellness event and it was a lot of fun!

This was the first event at The Great Outdoors that I have actually participated in. It made me feel like part of the community—a great feeling. I also brought some friends. You see, I am an avid runner (I compete in Masters Track meets - but that’s for another day), often run area 5Ks, and belong to a local Titusville run club: Run Amok. This group LOVES to jump into a race at almost any opportunity. The TGO 5K was an easy sell and I knew they’d be excited about it. After all, a race entry for five dollars, a decent quality tee shirt, AND a civilized start time of 8:15am made it irresistible (most races start 6:30 - 7am and cost at least $35).

I was right about the response from my run club—I showed up on Saturday with eleven additional runners for the event, some of whom had never, ever, been in The Great Outdoors even though they have lived in Titusville most of their lives! We all had a great time and a big “Good Job!” to the Activities Committee for organizing and managing the event. Of course we have photos - they start on page 46, courtesy of Tim Clark.

Golf Carts in TGO: Slow Down & Make Those Stops

As you all know there are many golf carts here in TGO and they are always zipping around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, serious golf cart injuries are on the rise to the tune of approximately 13,000 per year requiring emergency room visits. Luckily, here in TGO, we haven’t had many serious mishaps and we hope this good record continues. Please don’t be a statistic; stop at stop signs, control your speed, and do not turn corners at high speeds.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES

Emergency Vehicle Protocol

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

CSA Trouble Calls: 321-268-9767

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has eight AEDs located at CSA buildings.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:

• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris.

The crew has to pick this up!

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

THE CALIFORNIA WILDFIRE DISASTER: DANGER OUTSIDE THE DOOR

The California wildfires that have dominated the news for three weeks are still ongoing, but they are running low on fuel. Residents are being allowed to return to their home sites. In so many cases, their homes are no longer standing!

News is a business, a fickle business, and time marches on. Other news stories get the attention of the moment. Meanwhile, the residents of those areas recently turned to ash are being permitted to return to the remnants of their cremated homes to sift through the stinking rubble for artifacts of their lives. Could this scenario happen to us here in TGO? The mechanics might be slightly different, but WILDFIRES ARE ALL RUTHLESS and wasteful.

We don’t have Santa Anna Winds to drive a wildfire as did Southern California. Well, we do have Hurricane Force winds starting at 75 MPH with or without rain! What about “Fire Tornados? ” Yes again, on film and, in person, in Everglades National Park, South Florida!

Ordinary Materials that are stored in the homes and workshops of the residents of a community, can be transformed by direct flame contact or the radiant heat of a fire.

• Lead from lead-acid batteries can get into the atmosphere as vapors at high temperatures and spread widely.

• Pool chemicals exposed to high heat can irritate the skin and lungs.

• Batteries contain a lot of energy and can explode when they burn.

• Stored bullets can explode, scattering shrapnel.

• Pesticides, in garages or treated wood and soils can contain arsenic.

• Lead and zinc-based paints pose a toxic risk when exposed to heat.

At this writing, rain has come to the wildfire-burned areas of Southern California. The rain has cleared the air, but not the streets and driveways. They drain downslope into the Pacific Ocean and that pollution will continue. I remember, in my youth, the cute rhyme: “The Solution To Pollution Is Dilution”. That has proven to be incorrect even when the dissolving solution is the vast Pacific.

The California Wildfire Experience is a wakeup call and a reminder for all residents of TGO.

May we all be mindful and aware of This Danger Outside The Door.

WILDFIRE EMERGENCY DRILL

The Great Outdoors hosted a Wildfire Emergency Evacuation Exercise on Friday, January 24th. Volunteers from our Firewise Committee, CSA board leadership, maintenance staff and courtesy patrol officers participated. Representatives from Brevard County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) and Brevard County Fire and Rescue (BCFR) also joined us for this exercise. This drill tested our readiness, emergency communications, and cooperation with local emergency authorities in the event of a fast-moving wildfire threat. Below is the scenario we tested:

A fast-moving thunderstorm has passed over TGO. Lightning has caused a wildfire in the area behind the library. Fire agencies are now responding. Windy conditions are pushing the fire in the direction of our community. BCFR and BCSO have arrived on-site and have directed residents on Plantation from 315 Plantation to 459 Plantation to evacuate their homes immediately. Evacuees have the option to shelter in the manor and park vehicles in the manor parking lot. All residents that are not being evacuated are notified to shelter in place and await further instructions. During the evacuation process a second fire has occurred in the area of Plantation and Baytree. Fire operations have caused Plantation to be closed at that location. Evacuees must now be rerouted to avoid the second fire scene. Time is off the essence, and our priority is to keep emergency vehicles moving freely, keep all people in the area safe and prevent people from sightseeing which can hinder firefighting activities.

This test was followed by a debriefing of all volunteers and representatives, where we discussed any lessons learned and ways we can improve our response to a wildfire emergency.

Below is a photo of all who participated. We would like to thank all those involved in making sure TGO is safe and ready in the event of a wildfire.

FEATURE: WHITE-TAILED DEER OF THE GREAT OUTDOORS

TGO is a sanctuary for wildlife. The white-tailed deer are a beloved part of our community, frequently spotted grazing in open areas, wandering through wooded areas, or standing quietly at the edge of wetlands.

With their slender bodies, reddish-brown coats in summer (turning grayish in winter), and iconic white tails that flick up when alarmed, they are easy to identify. The sight of a doe with her fawns captures residents’ hearts.

Our forests, wetlands and open grassy areas provide an ideal habitat for the whitetailed deer. They thrive on leaves, acorns, fruits, and grasses. They are “crepuscular,” meaning most active during dawn and dusk. The deer population is more than just a charming addition to the landscape because it:

• Indicates a healthy environment as deer require a diverse range of plants and clean water sources;

• Represents a daily connection to the natural world;

• Offers a chance for residents to learn about Florida’s native wildlife.

The deer population brings joy, but it comes with challenges. Residents must drive cautiously at dawn and dusk and take measures so the deer don’t become accustomed to human interaction. To protect the deer and maintain the balance of nature, residents must not feed them and must respect their space. This ensures the deer remain wild and self-sufficient while coexisting with us.

White-tailed deer are part of our community. Their presence is a daily reminder of the beauty and importance of the natural world. Living alongside deer teaches us patience, respect, and the value of preserving wild spaces. These graceful creatures are a symbol of the relationship between people and nature. They are more than visitors. They’re neighbors, sharing the land and enriching our lives.

TGO Valentines!

In the fall of 2022, Jillian began working for The Great Outdoors. That is where and when she met Mike O’Neal, our Grounds Supervisor. The two learned a lot about each other. Including their mutual love for the outdoors and shared interests in fishing, hunting, and eventually, each other.

Even after Jillian left TGO, the friendship and relationship continued. They would take hunting trips to Alabama; Mike taught Jill to bass fish on his boat; and so, it was inevitable that after a year of dating, Jill and her two children would become part of the O’Neal household.

It only took four years for them to conclude all the memories they have already shared, would be increased by uniting as a family.

On January 17, 2025, in their favorite setting, the outdoors, by a lake, with the children, Madyson and Dylan, The O’Neals “tied the knot”!

We at The Great Outdoors are excited and thrilled that we were all there from the beginning!

Congratulations and Best Wishes, Mike, Jillian, Madyson, and Dylan!

TGO 5K Run & Walk

The cloudy, damp weather didn’t deter the TGO runners and walkers from turning out in force for the Annual TGO 5K!

Dozens of TGO residents showed up early in the morning on Feb 1st to line up on the starting line for a circuit of Plantation Drive. The running crowd had a significant increase in numbers this year as our intrepid editor brought his Titusville run group: Run Amok.

Participants proved their fitness with some impressive times on the 3.1 mile course, whether walking or running.

The TGO 5K Walk/Run is an annual event that promotes an active lifestyle and encourages combining exercise with a fun walk or run around our beautiful RV and Nature Resort.

This event is combined with a Wellness Fair that is sponsored by Parrish Medical Center. Each year several departments send representatives to provide information and answer questions from our homeowners.

This year Parrish provided representatives from departments such as Sleep Study, Orthopedics, St. Francis Reflections Lifestage Care and Rehab Care. Parrish also provide a speaker which this year was Dr. Andre Gabriel MD. who spoke about Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD).

Apple Tips

Turn Your Meh Photos into iPhone/iPad Masterpieces

We’ve all been there—you’re scrolling through your camera roll, and bam, there’s Aunt Susan’s face lit like she’s auditioning for a ghost story or that perfect sunset shot tilting like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Don’t worry. You don’t need a degree in Apple’s simple but powerful photo editing tools to turn those meh moments into wow-worthy photos! With just a few quick taps, your pics can go from drab to fab faster than Aunt Susan can belt out her favorite Taylor Swift song. Here’s why you should read this: most of the photos taken with your iPhone are almost perfect. They just need a little tweaking to shine. And lucky for you, Apple has gone and done the heavy lifting by providing stellar editing tools are so easy, even your dog could use them (although Fido’s paw-eye coordination is sadly lacking). Follow these tips to transform your photo library and maybe even impress the grandkids! (For quick video directions, go to: facebook.com/MyAppleTechKris)

Quick Photo Editing Tips (In order!)

1. The first thing I do: Hit that “Auto” wand—it may be all the magic you need!

2. Brighten it Up: Adjust the Exposure or Brightness slider for an instant glow-up.

3. Sharpen Details: Slide up the Sharpness just a touch to add clarity, but be careful not to over do it.

4. Fix the super dark Shadows: Drag the Shadows slider up to add details to darker areas without washing out the photo.

5. Straighten Your World: Use the Crop tool to level tilted horizons or Aunt Susan’s wine glass. (Secret tool: when framing your shot, look for the broken yellow line in the center of photo. Slightly align the camera and watch for the moment the 2 lines connect up…Now shoot!

6. Color Correct: Use Adjust Temperature only to fix weird orange or blue tints.

7. Carefully adjust the Contrast: Increase Contrast to make colors and textures pop (But too much will make it look like concrete!) Lower the contrast is you can’t see any details. (Example: shooting into the sun will create silhouette of subject…maybe artsy, maybe yikes!)

8. Add a Filter (or Not): Keep filters subtle—just enough to look pro, not overdone.

Advanced Edits:

1. Reduce Clutter: Crop out distractions. Use the ‘Cleanup Tool’ to tap over distractions. (Aunt Susan’s songbook? Gone!)

2. Remove Red-Eye: Most apps have a tool for this—unless you like that demon-dog look.

TGO MARKETPLACE

NOTICES

HOW YOU CAN HELP OUR TGO MAIL OPERATION RUN SMOOTHLY...

1. Please wait at least two hours from the time you receive a notice on your phone or computer that your package has arrived before coming to the post office. Here’s how it works... The truck backs up to post office, scans the packages and puts them in the office, but they don’t put the packages in the parcel lockers or place the pink slips in the box. That’s what Kathy and her team does, so that two hour time period is necessary for them to sort packages and put the notices in the boxes or the packages in the parcel lockers.

2. Empty your mailbox at least every other day. Don’t let it accumulate for more than two days. The boxes are small and if they get too full, the mail has to be put into a holding box and put on a shelf and there is very limited space. Shelf space is designated for mail that is being held Please don’t treat the post office as a storage facility.

TGO SHRED DAY

3. Rather than calling to ask if there is a package for you, please go look for yourself. Between all the mail and packages, they don’t have time to look for everyone’s packages. There will be a key or pink slip in your box if you have a package.

4. If you are running a business out of your house and need lots of supplies, please don’t rely on our post office for your supplies. Please order them from USPS (where they are free) or other supply sites. Our post office has limited space for shipping boxes, bags and labels.

5. If you are leaving for the summer and want your mail held, please know that your mail can be held for free for 30 days. Just let the post office know you will be gone so they can collect your mail. There is a form you will need to fill out. If you want your mail forwarded, there is a small fee of $25 per month plus postage to facilitate this service.

Shred Day will take place in the Manor Parking lot on Thursday March 13, between the hours of 1:00pm and 3:00pm.

We have a rain date set for Friday, March 14,2025, if we have to cancel the 13th due to weather.

NO EARLY DROP OFFS: All material must be delivered by a resident at or after 1:00pm and must be dropped off before 2:50pm.

Material MUST be in “ready to shred” condition. This means residents should not bring file folders, paper clipped material, plastic wraps of folders, plastic bags, etc If materials are not ready-to-shred, the resident will be asked to step out of line, prepare their materials and return with material suitable for shredding. This will help to keep the line moving.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Marilyn Adams via email, ma521@comcast.net or phone 517-673-2110.
