This recognition reflects the hard work and dedication of our entire CSA teams, who take great pride in maintaining and improving the course every day. Speaking of the golf course, Garret and his team will be hosting a Fourth of July Tournament on Thursday, July 2. Be sure to sign up with the Pro Shop and join us for a great day on the course.

As we move into the summer season, we have yet to see our typical weather pattern arrive here at The Great Outdoors. Instead, we have experienced prolonged hot, humid, and windy conditions, which have contributed to severe drought conditions throughout much of the state.

Despite these challenging conditions, our maintenance teams have been working extremely hard each day to keep our turf healthy, green, and well-maintained. Their dedication and attention to detail continue to make a noticeable difference throughout the community. As we continue through this period of hot and dry weather, we would also like to remind everyone to stay hydrated, take precautions when spending time outdoors, and do your best to stay cool during these challenging conditions.

During this period of drought, the CSA team is closely monitoring irrigation lake levels daily and carefully managing water usage across the property. Until we begin receiving our normal summer rainfall, the temporarily use of potable water for homeowners who wish to supplement watering their lawns and landscape plants through their irrigation systems will be allowed. For the best results and to conserve water, we recommend watering during the early morning hours rather than during the heat of the day, when evaporation rates are highest.

Hopefully, by the time you read this, Mother Nature will have provided some much-needed rainfall. Until then, thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we work together to maintain the beauty of our community.

Turf Masters will be in the community during the week of July 6, to complete their next lawn treatment. If you would like to be on the “No Spray List,” please contact the CSA office by July 2.

In closing, we would also like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Wayne Condra and his family following the recent passing of his wife, Linda. Wayne and Linda have been an integral part of The Great Outdoors community for many years, and our thoughts and prayers are with their family.

Chipping - Make it Easy One of the biggest mistakes amateur golfers make around the greens is using too much loft when they chip.

Many players automatically reach for their sand wedge or lob wedge on every short game shot because they believe the ball needs to fly high into the air. While those clubs certainly have their place, they are often much harder to control consistently—especially for recreational golfers.

Higher lofted clubs create more variables. The ball launches higher, spends more time in the air, and requires more precision in strike and distance control. Small mistakes in contact can lead to chunks, thin shots, or shots that come out unpredictably hot or soft.

For better consistency, golfers should choose less loft and allow the ball to roll more like a putt.

Using a pitching wedge, 9-iron, or even an 8-iron around the green can make chipping significantly easier. Lower lofted clubs produce a lower, more predictable shot that gets on the ground sooner and rolls toward the hole. Because the ball spends less time in the air, distance control becomes more reliable and mishits tend to be less severe.

This approach also simplifies the motion. Instead of trying to “help” the ball into the air, golfers can make a smaller, more relaxed stroke and let the loft of the club do the work.

Many great short game players follow a simple philosophy: get the ball on the ground as quickly as possible whenever conditions allow.

That does not mean golfers should never use a sand wedge or lob wedge. When the shot requires the ball to carry over a bunker, stop quickly, or land softly on a downslope, loft becomes necessary. But on standard chips with plenty of green to work with, less loft is often the higher percentage play.

Meet Jon Lyerly - TGO Maintenance Manager

The Great Outdoors has become much more than a workplace - it has become a place that helped shape his career, his future, and his outlook on life.

Jon Lyerly serves as Maintenance Manager at TGO, overseeing many of the projects and operations that keep the community running smoothly. His journey to that position began 13 years ago when he joined the staff as a temporary employee on the lawn crew.

“I wasn’t even full-time when I started,” Jon recalls. “I was just a temporary lawn crew guy.”

Over the years, he worked his way through nearly every corner of the maintenance department. After the lawn crew, he moved into the Buildings Department, where he spent about a year and a half helping maintain community facilities.

He later worked with the pools, irrigation systems, and aquatic operations, and also served as one of the department’s on-call team members.

Each position gave him valuable experience and a better understanding of how the community operates. About two years ago, he accepted the role of Maintenance Manager.

A lifelong Titusville resident, Jon represents the third generation of his family to call the area home. He attended Titusville High School and spent much of his youth enjoying the outdoor lifestyle that Florida is known for.

Because he was diagnosed with scoliosis, traditional school sports were not an option. “The school wouldn’t let me participate in sports because of health concerns,” he explains. Instead, he found other ways to stay active.

“I spent most of my time skateboarding and surfing.” Surfing quickly became a favorite pastime. Jon traveled much of Florida’s East Coast in search of waves, surfing everywhere from New Smyrna Beach to Sebastian Inlet. Those experiences helped develop the appreciation for the outdoors that still plays a major role in his life today.

Interestingly, Jon’s introduction to TGO happened years before he ever applied for a job. He purchased a truck from someone who lived on Fairways Drive and had an opportunity to see the community for the first time.

“I bought a truck from somebody out here, and that was really my first experience seeing the park,” he says. A few years later, he remembered the community when looking for work and sub-

mitted an application. That decision ultimately launched a career that has now spanned more than a decade.

As Maintenance Manager, Jon oversees a team responsible for many of the behind-the-scenes operations that residents depend on every day. While every day presents different challenges, he says one factor consistently affects nearly everything his department does.“The weather,” he says without hesitation.

Florida’s climate often determines what work can be accomplished on any given day. “When we get rain, we can’t mow. Drainage work stops. A lot of projects have to be put on hold, and from that point we just do what we can.”

Being surrounded by wetlands adds another layer of complexity. “We’re basically right on the edge of the swamp,” he says with a laugh.

For maintenance crews, flexibility is simply part of the job.

When the workday ends, Jon remains just as active. One of his biggest passions today is fitness. “I’m a gym rat,” he says. “I go to the gym pretty much every day after work.”

Beyond the gym, Jon enjoys fishing and hunting, two activities that have been part of his Florida upbringing. Fishing, in particular, has been a lifelong passion. “I’ll fish anywhere,” he says.

“Freshwater, saltwater—it doesn’t matter.” Whether it’s a local lake, river, inlet, or offshore waters, he enjoys being outdoors and on the water.

As the conversation came to a close, Jon reflected on the values that guide both his personal and professional life. “I’m a God-fearing man,” he says. “I believe the Lord has put me here on this path for a reason.” That sense of purpose has shaped the way he approaches his work and his future. He also credits The Great Outdoors with having a positive impact on his life. “I love The Great Outdoors, and it’s changed my life.”

After 13 years of service, Jon’s story is a reminder that dedication, hard work, and a willingness to learn can create opportunities for growth. From a temporary lawn crew employee to Maintenance Manager, his career reflects the commitment and perseverance that help make TGO the special community it is today.

And if you ask Jon, there’s no place he’d rather be. “If you’re going to be in Florida,” he says, “this is an even better place to be.”

Drainage Improvements Underway

We recently caught up with Jon Lyerly at the south end of Plantation Drive to learn more about a drainage improvement project currently underway near the wooded area on the north side of the road.

“You’re standing next to one of the main drainage ditches in TGO,” Jon explained. “This system handles runoff from a large portion of the community.”

Jon pointed out a series of overflow structures located along Plantation Drive. There are four in total, each built at a slightly different elevation. During heavy rainfall events, water rises gradually and begins flowing through the overflows one at a time, helping move excess stormwater through the drainage system.

The challenge, according to Jon, was a section of wooded area where stormwater would collect but had no efficient path to continue flowing. “The water was essentially stopping here,” he said. “It would back up and get trapped in the vegetation instead of moving through the system the way it was intended.”

To correct the problem, crews are installing a new 12-inch drainage pipe that will allow water to move out of the wooded area and into a newly constructed drainage ditch. That ditch will then connect to the main drainage channel through an additional 12-inch pipe, creating a much more efficient flow path.

“This will provide significant relief during major rain events and tropical storms,” Jon said. “The goal is to keep water moving naturally through the system instead of allowing it to collect in low areas.”

We asked where all of this water eventually ends up. “Everything ultimately drains toward the St. Johns River,” Jon explained. “This project will connect into the existing drainage system near the corner of Plantation Drive, just north of the Hole 10 restroom area, and from there the water continues south through the system toward the river.”

Projects like this may not be highly visible once completed, but they play an important role in protecting roads, properties, and common areas throughout TGO during Florida’s rainy season and tropical TGO crews are installing new drainage pipes and improving water flow near the south end of Plantation Drive. weather events.

In Memoriam...

Linda (Hamblen) Condra, a resident of The Great Outdoors Resort passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026. Linda was the third child born to Helen and Neil Hamblen of Atlanta, Illinois on November 1, 1945. Her father, Neil, would die in a tragic accident when Linda was nine years old. Her family moved to the Chicago area when her mother married Jack Marquard.

It was in Des Plaines, Illinois where Linda met Wayne Condra on a blind date in 1962. Their relationship grew even though Wayne was soon transferred to Indianapolis and then Atlanta, Georgia. Following Wayne’s Navy obligation, they were married on July 20, 1968 and took up residence in the Atlanta, Georgia area.

Following the birth of her first son, Linda made the great decision to work as a full-time mother and housewife. In that role she was also the “neighborhood mom,” performing a range of activities such as shuttling kids to soccer practices and serving as Cub Scout den leader. She was a caring and hardworking woman who quietly anticipated the needs of those she loved. Her family could always count on her unwavering support and steady presence. She took pride in maintaining a welcoming home, staying on top of the household chores with remarkable dedication. In fact, she preferred doing dishes by hand and never used a dishwasher.

Linda is survived by her husband Wayne, two sons, Derek (Holly) and Bryan (Deana) along with three outstanding granddaughters – Katherine, Charlotte and Courtney. Also surviving her are two sisters, Nancy Burley and Lori Benner, along with many nieces and nephews.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Dixie Van Gieson, Robin Ingram and Margaret Harmon and brothers Jeff Hamblen and Jack Hamblen.

Throughout her life, Linda was a devote Christian and a member of the Methodist Church. She never cursed, drank or smoked, thus setting a good example for all.

Following Wayne’s retirement in 1995, they spent every summer traveling the United States in their motorhome. All states were visited except Delaware!

She loved sending postcards from her trips and always knew the price of a stamp. She also tracked gasoline prices and where to find the best deal. She enjoyed baking homemade cookies and pies and took special joy in passing along recipes to her grandchildren. Each year, she celebrated her birthday with a beloved tradition: baking her signature cherry pie.

Family was at the center of her life. She shared a particularly close bond with her mother, phoning her often. Her devotion extended across generations. For example, she spent countless hours with her granddaughters teaching them how to cook, making lemonade, playing card games like Old Maid, planting flowers, and attending sports, dance and music recitals.

She found peace and happiness outdoors - looking at plants, watching birds, sitting on the beach, and appreciating the beauty around her. One of her favorite places was Jetty Park, where she enjoyed watching the cruise ships depart from Port Canaveral and disappear over the horizon.

Linda was always a supporter of her local food pantry. Every time she went grocery shopping, she would buy extra and drop it off for the needy. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider supporting your local food pantry in her name.

Her memorial service was held in Spencer, Iowa on June 20. She will lie at rest as part of the fourth generation in the family plot at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.

Sunset Drive’s History Lesson- Celebrating 250 Years This patriotic display is in the garden at the beginning of Sunset Drive. This display was the work of Rick and Marijo Bercaw who live on Sunset Drive. The models were hand made by Marijo’s father.

On the night of December 25, 1776, George Washington crossed the Delaware River for a surprise attack on Hessian forces in Trenton, New Jersey.

Americans defeated the Hessians, capturing around 1,100 enemy troops, giving the Continental Army a victory in the Battle of Trenton, which became the turning point in the revolutionary war for the US.

The USS Hannah was the first armed American naval vessel during the American Revolution. She was a fishing schooner owned by John Glover before being outfitted with guns, authorized and hired by the Continental Congress. She was operated by the Continental Army under General George Washington.

The Spad XIII biplane fighter was invented and produced by the French to be used by the French and U.S. during World War I. It was known for its speed, robust construction, and diving capabilities, making it superior in “boom and zoom tactics.” It was equipped with Vickers machine guns.

The American P-51 Mustang was used in World War II and the Korean War for escort and ground attack. It is known for its speed, agility, and very long range.

The M-142 Himers is an USA mobile rocket launcher made by Lockheed Martin.

It provides long range accurate fire support for destroying high value enemy stationary targets. It can reach speeds of 528 miles per hour letting it fire, relocate, and reload quickly to evade counter fire by the enemy. It’s used by the Army and Navy. It can carry two to three soldiers.

The B2 Spirit Stealth Bomber is made by Northrup Grumman and used by the U.S. Air Force. It can penetrate enemy air defense to deliver conventional and nuclear munitions, including bunker busters. It maintains its low radar detection by our enemies because of its special coating materials and design.

The Los Angeles nuclear powered subs are built for fast attack, ant- submarine, and anti-surface ship warfare. Also, precision land strikes with Tomahawk missiles. The subs are also responsible for intelligence gathering, and special operations. The length of these subs are 362 feet and need refueled every 30 years.

The F-22 Raptor was designed as a top secret air superiority fighter and is exclusively available for U.S. use only. The Raptor is designed for air to air and air to ground combat reconnaissance, electronic warfare. It is the world’s most advanced stealth fighter for its radar evading power, which makes it invisible to radar.

The USS Gerald R. Ford Aircraft Carrier is the largest warship ever built at 1106 feet long and 25 decks high. It can carry 75 to 90 aircraft and 4500 to 4600 personnel. This ship is a nuclear powered air base, which needs refueled every 20 to 25 years. Its home port is in Norfolk, Virginia.

NASA SLS, or Space Launch System, is the primary U.S. rocket for returning to the moon. It’s designed to launch the Orion Spacecraft astronauts and cargo for the Artemis program, aiming for lunar orbits and landings. Private system, such as SpaceX Starship, will also operate under the SLS Artemis program.

Injuries and Damage Caused by Fireworks As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026, there may be the desire and temptation to set off fireworks to commemorate the occasion. Although accepted in many areas, fireworks are prohibited here in TGO. The setting off of fireworks is prohibited in Florida by Florida Statute 790.15.

Since we live in the middle of a wildland, the subject of fireworks is an important consideration. The state of Florida only allows the discharge of fireworks on three occasions: July 4, December 31, and January 1 of each year. However, given the location of TGO and concentration of homes and RV sites, the use and/or discharge of any fireworks are prohibited in TGO. The state legislature gave homeowner associations the ability to prohibit the use and/or discharge of fireworks in 2020, and in that year the CSA Board of Directors made the change to our establishing documents to prohibit the use and/ or discharge of fireworks in TGO. Fireworks are often associated with celebration, but they also cause thousands of injuries and substantial property damage each year in the United States. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, an estimated 14,700 people were treated in emergency rooms for fireworks-related injuries in 2024, and 11 deaths were reported.

These figures marked a sharp increase over the previous year and show that fireworks remain a serious public safety hazard.

Burns are the most common fireworks injury, accounting for 37 percent of emergency room visits in 2024. The hands and fingers are injured most often, followed by the head, face, and ears. Sparklers, which are frequently given to children, are especially dangerous because they can burn at about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Adults ages 25 to 44 accounted for the largest share of injuries, but teenagers and children also face significant risk, especially during the weeks surrounding the Fourth of July.

The damage caused by fireworks is not limited to personal injury. The National Fire Protection Association reports that fireworks started an estimated 32,302 fires in 2023, including 3,760 structure fires and 849 vehicle fires. Those fires caused 15 civilian deaths, 58 civilian injuries, and an estimated $142 million in direct property damage. Although structure fires made up a relatively small share of fireworks-related fires, they accounted for most of the deaths, injuries, and financial losses.

These numbers show that fireworks can have life-changing consequences in only a few seconds. Injuries may involve burns, lacerations, eye trauma, hearing damage, or permanent disability, while fires can destroy homes, vehicles, and other property. Safety experts consistently state that the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a professional public display rather than using consumer fireworks at home.

Sammy Haddad

For many residents of The Great Outdoors, Friday night music at the Blue Heron means spending an evening with Sammy Haddad. What many may not know is that behind the familiar voice is a remarkable life story that includes a 34-year career with NASA, decades of performing music throughout Central Florida, a successful real estate career, and a lifelong passion for the space program. From meeting Apollo astronauts and witnessing the birth of the Space Shuttle era to entertaining generations of music lovers, Sammy has lived a life filled with memorable experiences. We recently sat down with him to learn more about the man behind the microphone.

Okay Sammy, let’s start at the beggining, did you grow up in Florida, or did you move here from somewhere else?

I moved to Florida from Cleveland, Ohio, in 1968 when I was 13 years old. Our family settled in Titusville, so I spent all of my high school years here.

What brought your family to Florida?

My father suffered from severe back problems, and the cold Cleveland winters made them much worse. We had relatives already living in the area, including a cousin who worked at Kennedy Space Center. They encouraged my uncle to move here and get into real estate, and my dad decided Florida might be a good move for our family as well.

It turned out to be life-changing for him. The warm climate made such a difference that he seemed twenty years younger. Back in Ohio, especially during the winter, he struggled to get around. Once we moved to Florida, he was active again and felt like himself.

We played local parties and events, and I loved every minute of it. Moving to Florida was perfect because I could play baseball year-round, something I couldn’t do in Ohio.

What happened after high school? Did you attend college?

I did. I graduated high school at 17 and enrolled at Florida Technological University, which is now the UCF. While I was in college, I continued playing music with my band. In fact, one of the first big opportunities we ever received came while we were performing at a college event.

A representative from a major Orlando booking agency approached us afterward and offered us the chance to become an opening act for some of the biggest touring bands of the day, including groups like Chicago and Three Dog Night.

What exactly did you do at NASA? I started as a co-op student in the Logistics Division, working in the Supply and Transportation Branch. After graduating from college, NASA offered me a full-time position.

Over the years, I moved through several different assignments. About every six or seven years I would take on a new role, which was often the best way to advance within the organization. At that time, NASA was transitioning between the Apollo and Space Shuttle programs, so there were plenty of opportunities to move around and gain experience.

Wasn’t there a slowdown period between the Apollo and Shuttle programs? Wasn’t much going on for a while...

There was. The gap was originally expected to be about three years, but it stretched to nearly seven. Funding challenges delayed development, and many people questioned whether the Space Shuttle would ever fly.

Some believed the vehicle was simply too large and too complex. Fortunately, NASA proved the skeptics wrong.

We weren’t here, but the Space Shuttle era must have been amazing.

It was incredible. The excitement surrounding the Shuttle program was unlike anything I’d ever seen.

The launches attracted enormous media attention, along with celebrities, filmmakers, and public figures from around the world. Through volunteer work with NASA’s Public Affairs team, I had opportunities to assist with launch events and interact with many of those visitors.

I even met people like George Lucas and Steven Spielberg during the early years of the Star Wars era. Between the astronauts, the media personalities, and the celebrities, it was an unforgettable experience.

Besides being a singer, did you play any instruments?

I played guitar and sang. There were five members in the band, but I eventually learned how to play every instrument.

Back then, there was no internet, YouTube, or karaoke tracks. When someone suggested a new song, I would listen to it on the radio and figure out all the individual parts - the lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, harmonies - everything. Then I would teach the other band members their parts.

Looking back, it felt like a God-given gift. I never minded the time it took because I loved music. We must have been doing something right because people kept hiring us. How long were you involved with the Shuttle program?

Did you continue performing while you were in college?

I was there before the first Shuttle launch and remained inAbsolutely, but during my second year, I learned about volved throughout nearly the entire program. And you never stopped playing music, did you?

Never.

That started around 2002. At the time, I was performing Wednesday night dinner music at the Elks Lodge. A group of regulars from The Great Outdoors, including Bob and Judy Ferretti and Murph and Lorraine Murphy, would come every week to listen.

One night they told me, “We’ve got to get you out to The Great Outdoors.” They introduced me to the community manager at the time, and before long I was invited to perform here. My very first night, I think there was only one table with four people sitting there. But that didn’t matter to me. I simply loved playing music.

What was your performance style back then?

By that time, karaoke technology had become very sophisticated. I had also learned to play keyboard, so I would perform vocals and keyboard along with professionally recorded backing tracks.

The background instruments and harmonies were already there, and occasionally I would record some of my own harmony parts as well. In many ways, it’s very similar to what I’m doing today.

After the Space Shuttle program ended, Titusville really took a hit, right?

Yes it did! The area experienced a downturn, much like it did after the Apollo program ended. In fact, the period between Apollo and the Shuttle era was especially difficult. At one point there were nearly 900 homes for sale in Titusville.

Ironically, that’s when I got into real estate.

When the Shuttle program arrived, the community rebounded. Then, when the Shuttle program ended, we saw another slowdown. Many people left the area, and once again there were concerns about the future.

Fortunately, the decision was made to embrace commercial spaceflight. Companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin came in, and that completely changed the trajectory of the Space Coast.

The space industry is definitely leaving its mark on Titusville now. The entire Space Coast is enjoying the growth.

the flexibility to operate more efficiently and pursue their own goals.

It also created opportunities for many former NASA and Shuttle-era employees to return and contribute their knowledge to a new generation of space exploration.

What are your thoughts on all this expansion?

I think it’s great - the future is incredibly exciting. Companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

We’re talking about missions to Mars, deep-space exploration, and technologies that would have seemed impossible a generation ago. The partnership between commercial companies and NASA has accelerated progress and removed much of the bureaucracy that once slowed things down.

We need to continue exploring space, and this model allows us to do that in ways that weren’t possible before.

Do you still keep up with everything happening at Kennedy Space Center?

Not as closely as I once did. I still hear a lot through friends and former coworkers. Many of the people I worked with years ago have gone on to become directors and senior leaders.

My son actually works at Kennedy Space Center as well, so I stay informed. But these days I spend less time studying every detail and more time enjoying my family.

How big is the family these days?

It’s grown quite a bit. I have three children and nine grandchildren. Two of my children and six of the grandchildren live locally, while my third son and his three children live in Oviedo, so they’re still close by.

One move my father made back in 1968 changed the course of our family’s future. Now we’re talking about multiple generations who call this area home.

Our house has become the gathering place for family events. Between the swimming pool, barbecues, and family celebrations, we’ve counted as many as forty relatives at one gathering. It’s amazing to think how much our family has grown since that move from Ohio all those years ago.

Let’s switch to music who were some of your biggest musical influences growing up?

My favorite band of all time was Three Dog Night. They were the first major band I ever saw live, and I fell in love with their harmonies. Harmony singing has always been my favorite part of performing.

When you’re on stage with three or four people whose voices blend perfectly together, it’s almost magical.

That’s a feeling I’ve never forgotten.

You played in several bands before performing solo. Why did you make that change?

I loved playing with bands, but over time it became difficult dealing with schedules, personalities, and some of the issues that often come with the music business.

Going solo gave me more flexibility and allowed me to keep music in my life while pursuing my other careers and interests. I’ve never stopped playing guitar, keyboards, or singing.

What’s your favorite music to perform?

Almost everything. I started out as a rock-and-roll guy, but over the years I developed a real appreciation for country music as well.

You actually retired fairly young, didn’t you?

One of the turning points was hearing Garth Brooks I did. I retired at 54 years old. It was an early retirement, but blend country and rock together. I realized my voice was after spending more than three decades working for NASA actually well-suited for country music, and I love the storyand living through one of the most exciting periods in space telling and everyday life messages found in country songs. exploration history, I felt very fortunate.

Even after retiring though, I still continue supporting Top to bottom: Sammy as Elvis, Sammy the businessman, and Public Affairs activities during the final launches. the view of Sammy doing what he loves!

Sammy Haddad - Rocket Man Well... at the Blue Heron, you play a variety of different songs from a variety of artists. How did that develop?

Years ago, I performed in a show band that raised money for children’s charities. That’s where I learned how to capture the style and sound of artists like Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, Engelbert Humperdinck, The Temptations, Elton John, Billy Joel, and many others.

I don’t try to do exact impersonations. I simply try to honor their style and deliver the songs the way people remember hearing them.

What do you enjoy most about performing at TGO? Without a doubt... the people.

When I perform here, it doesn’t feel like work. It feels like I’m playing music for an extended family gathering.

The residents participate, they dress for the theme nights, they dance, they sing along, and they genuinely enjoy themselves.

That energy comes right back to me as a performer. It’s impossible not to have fun when the audience is having that much fun.

How much longer do you plan to keep performing?

As long as I can keep hauling the equipment in and out.

Honestly, that’s become the hardest part. Once the music starts, I feel twenty years younger. The crowd’s energy keeps me going, and I still love every minute of being on stage.

Honestly, Sammy, at this point, you’re part of the fabric of The Great Outdoors - and the Blue Heron.

Well... TGO is much more than just a place where I perform.

Years ago, during a difficult time for my daughter and her young children, I purchased a home here because I

wanted them in a safe, gated community. What amazed me was how quickly the neighbors embraced them. It felt like the entire street adopted those kids as their own.

That’s what makes TGO special. The people care about each other.

Between the golf course, the pools, the restaurant, the activities, and the friendships, it’s a wonderful place to live.

I’ve traveled a lot and experienced many communities, but there’s something unique about The Great Outdoors.

If there’s a place that comes close to heaven on earth, this might be it.

A fun story from our interview about the time Sammy auditioned for Star Search.

In the early 1990’s I was urged by a bunch of friends to go to an audition for the popular Ed McMahon’s Star Search show which was doing open auditions at Disney MGM Studios. I reluctantly agreed because I was doing well in my NASA career and had already turned down the opportunity pre-college to go big time in music but for this instance I agreed. I sang two Righteous Bros songs. I was auditioning along with 19 other contestants and was the last performer. It was like the full show with lighting, multiple camera angles and it was taped which I have a copy of. At the end of my second song the director ran onstage, shook my hand and said “Thanks for that.”

The audience gave me a standing ovation, but that wasn’t all. On the way out of the park, I had people stopping me to shake my hand and take pictures with me. As we rode the tram to the parking lot someone was sitting behind me that was at the show and tapped me on the shoulder.

He told me someone was trying to get my attention and when I looked around some guy was chasing the tram and when we made eye contact he stopped and threw up double thumbs up. I looked at my wife, Eliana, who was also stunned by the reactions, and for a few minutes I felt what it was like to be a celebrity. I never got called for the show but it was such a great memory.

Alexander Bowlby - Blue Heron’s Cook.

Known simply as “Bowlby” to many of his coworkers, Alexander Bowlby joined the Blue Heron kitchen team a little over a month ago and has quickly become a valued member of the staff. As a cook, he brings years of kitchen experience, a passion for food, and a commitment to continually improving his craft.

Before coming to the Blue Heron, Bowlby worked at Vine & Olive, where he steadily advanced through the kitchen ranks. Starting as a line cook, he eventually moved into a supervisory role and later shared the responsibilities of a sous chef position, gaining valuable experience in both food preparation and kitchen management.

His interest in cooking developed naturally while growing up and spending time in the kitchen with his mother. “I think I mostly learned by cooking for myself,” he says. As a teenager, he also volunteered in a church kitchen, gaining hands-on experience preparing meals and working as part of a team.

Over the years, Bowlby has developed skills that extend well beyond everyday cooking. He has worked with whole cuts of meat and fish, breaking them down into portions and preparing them for service.

Although he has only been at the Blue Heron a short time, Bowlby already appreciates the atmosphere and culture. “The environment is a lot better,” he says. “The workload is manageable, and there are opportunities to be creative.”

That creativity is one of his favorite aspects of the job. When asked what he enjoys preparing most, he points to gnocchi and risotto—dishes that require patience, consistency, and attention to detail.

Away from the kitchen, Bowlby enjoys spending time with his wife and three-year-old daughter. Whether he’s preparing a nightly special or serving residents through the meals he creates, Bowlby takes pride in his work, and Blue Heron diners are the beneficiaries of that dedication.

The Human Body - An Amazing Machine

The human body is an incredibly sophisticated machine, full of mysteries. Throughout history, science has revealed fascinating facts about how it works, yet lesser-known curiosities continue to surprise and challenge our understanding. Are you ready to discover 12 fascinating quirks about your body that will leave you speechless?

Lungs A person inhales and exhales over 2,000 gallons of air daily, taking roughly 21,000 breaths a day. We perform this action almost unconsciously, but it is vital to absorb oxygen and expel carbon dioxide.

Now, did you know the right lung is slightly larger than the left lung to make room for the heart? And that the lungs contain over 300 billion tiny blood vessels called capillaries that, if unfolded, would extend to 1,500 miles? Don’t worry, you learn something new every day!

Nails The primary function of nails is to protect the fingertips, which contain a high concentration of nerve endings. In fact, this is one of the most sensitive areas of the human body.

Because they are more exposed, fingernails grow at a much faster rate than toenails. Fingernails grow about 1/8 inch per month, while toenails grow about half as much. Nail growth is also determined by factors such as weather, often speeding up during the summer. If you happen to lose a fingernail, it may take up to six months to grow back from base to tip.

Stomach The stomach is a fascinating organ with many peculiarities. For example, it produces hormones that influence appetite and sleep, and it can stretch to hold up to 50 ounces of food when we eat.

But perhaps its most incredible feature is its production of hydrochloric acid, which kills bacteria and aids digestion.

This acid is so potent that it can even dissolve metals such as zinc. Fortunately for us, the stomach has a protective layer of mucus that is renewed every three to four days. If this lining weren’t continually replaced, it would dissolve. In other words, your stomach would digest itself.

But did you know that human height can vary throughout the day and with age?

Every morning when you wake up, you are about 0.5 to 0.75 inches taller than when you go to bed at night. This is because the soft cartilage between your bones gets compressed by the force of gravity when you stand or sit. Starting in your forties or fifties, people gradually lose nearly half an inch of height per decade due to bone density loss, disc compression, and other age-related factors.

Skin On an average adult, skin covers an area of about 20 square feet and has multiple functions. The outer layer, called the epidermis, consists of dead cells that help regulate temperature and protect the body from dirt and germs. But did you know that your body is constantly losing and replacing these cells?

Every minute, you shed more than 30,000 dead skin cells. In fact, the entire surface of your skin is replaced every month, which, in other words, means that you will lose around 40 pounds of skin and have around 1,000 different skins in your lifetime.

Bones We all remember what we learned in school: the human body has 206 bones. However, at birth, humans have approximately 300 bones, many of which fuse as we grow, resulting in the 206 bones found in adults. More than half of these bones are located in the hands and feet, with 27 bones per hand and 26 per foot.

Researchers believe this mutation first appeared in a person living in Europe 6,000 to 10,000 years ago, which means that all blue-eyed people living today share a common ancestor.

TODAY’S RECIPE: Green Gazpacho Ingredients: 2 English cucumbers, peeled and roughly chopped 2 garlic cloves ,smashed 2 cups coarsely chopped arugula 2 cups herb mixture – cilantro, parsley, mint 3-4 tbsp sherry or red wine vinegar ¾ c good olive oil Salt Directions: Puree the cucumbers, garlic and a ½ cup of water in a blender. Add arugula, herbs, vinegar. Blend, stop and scrape down sides, then continue until smooth. Slowly add in the olive oil (in a stream). The mixture will turn a pale green and look creamy. Taste and add salt to desired flavor. Some will enjoy a little added vinegar – I like a drizzle of olive oil on top after serving with a little fresh cracked pepper.

Funny Thing Is… Golf Could Be The End of Civilization The game of golf could lead to the end of civilization on earth. WHAT? Sorry golf friends, but a rational analysis of the game of golf, especially in the summer, supports my hypothesis. Let me explain.

They say people golf to relax. So why are most golfers more upset at the end of the game than when they started? If golf is such a relaxing game, why do all golf courses have to have a full bar at the end of the course and a beer cart roaming the course for golfers who can’t make it nine holes without a drink? And the terms used in golf don’t make sense to me. I thought a foursome was something you only read about in a racy magazine. The tee and the cup aren’t used together, wedges don’t have anything to do with tight underwear but can be a pain in that general area, the driver doesn’t use a steering wheel, the putter isn’t something you do around the house, and landing in a bunker doesn’t protect you from enemy fire but instead causes you to hurl your favorite club into a lake. Who thought these things up? To an invading alien attacking the earth, golf would look like an easy way to torture humans into mindless submission. Think about it. World leaders can often be seen coming off a golf course talking to themselves then stomping into the onsite bar to drink themselves into oblivion. Forget the lasers. These silly humans can be conquered by just marching them into torture chambers called country clubs. Those that golf in summer are already halfway to oblivion. Ever hear someone say, “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity?” Shut up. The younger golfers deal with the humidity by drinking energy drinks. Us older guys drink enough water to irrigate a small farm. That’s why there are Porta Potties every third hole. And what’s with the gigantic hats in the summer? They look like they can receive signals from orbiting satellites. In this game the strongest individuals in the world, professional athletes for example, can be brought to tears by something that looks like a little round marshmallow that has more dimples than Shirley Temple. My advice, if you really want to relax, embrace the heat and grab a sixpack from the fridge. Head for the beach where people love the sand and the only hazard is getting caught staring at the lifeguard’s girlfriend. - Sammy -

A Minute with Meghan… Staying “FITTE” for the Future Hopefully, by now, you know how important it is to stay active and keep your body healthy. (If not, come see me, we need to talk- haha!) However, we often approach our fitness goals haphazardly with complex exercise routines, watching popular “influencers” on social media, or by trying fad diets. Sometimes we go to the gym and just jump on a machine, without any idea of how much weight to use, or how many repetitions or sets to do. Starting a healthier lifestyle without a plan doesn’t set you up for success. Have you ever heard the adage, “Those that fail to plan, plan to fail”? Well not here, not at TGO, not with yours truly!

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) promotes the idea that “Exercise is Medicine,” and just like the medications you take, there are specific durations, frequencies, and dosages that you abide by. The same is true for exercise. Developing structure for your exercise routine, tailored to your goals, will help you maximize benefits… enter the FITTE principle.

You can think of the FITTE principle as your prescription for exercise. FITTE stands for frequency, intensity, time, type, and enjoyment. Now, what does that mean?

• Frequency describes how often we should be participating in exercise. We should aim for 3 to 5 days per week of activity. If you’re just beginning, start with 1 to 3 days per week, increasing your frequency as you become more acclimated.

• Intensity means how hard are you exercising; which can sound scary. All it means is how much blood you are pumping through your body. For aerobic exercise, we want to aim for an intensity of 60-85% of our projected maximum heart rate (HR). How do you figure that out? Take 220 minus your age, this is your projected maximum HR. Now multiply that by 0.60 to find the low end of your target HR range. Multiply your max HR by 0.85, which gives you the high end of your target HR range. Now you know what your intensity range should be. If you wear a heart rate monitor, this is an easy way to ensure you stay in your target HR range; but what if you don’t wear one? That’s ok, you can still estimate your “zone” by using the Talk Test to gauge your intensity: Zone 1: You can easily hold a conversation with someone at the rate you’re going.

Zone 2: You can still hold a light conversation, but you have to push yourself a bit and may need to stop for a beat occasionally to take a breath.

Zone 3: You could talk if you needed to, but it would take some effort. You could sustain this pace for about 20 to 40 minutes.

Zone 4: You’re not talking unless you have to and can’t keep up at the rate you’re going for more than about 15 minutes.

Zone 5: Talking is out of the question. You can keep up your efforts here for maybe five minutes.

For most of your aerobic exercise, you want to aim for Zones 2 to 3. Yes, you want to sweat, but it’s more about increasing oxygenation and circulation, where benefits begin in Zone 2.

When determining intensity for resistance training, you want to aim for 60-70% of your 1-Repetition Maximum (aka 1 Rep Max or 1RM). Now, you’re probably saying, “Whoa, Meghan, I’m not in my 20s anymore, nor am I a professional athlete, I’m not even attempting a 1RM.” No problem! Me neither!

The FITTE principle isn’t about making exercise more complicated- it’s about giving yourself a plan for success.

Those of us in the fitness industry like to use what we call “Reps in Reserve” (RIR), as a way to gauge intensity for resistance or weight training. It simply measures how many more repetitions you could physically complete before your muscles give out. Essentially, it’s how much gas do you have left in the tank? When following a program where you perform 8 to 12 repetitions, your RIR will generally fall between 2 and 5. An RIR of 0 is like an empty gas tank, where you did 10 reps and on the 11th rep, the weight got stuck halfway up- your muscles completely failed (maximal effort). An RIR of 2 is like having 2 gallons left where you did 10 reps and safely stopped, knowing you could have done exactly two more reps (optimal effort)… and so forth. An RIR of 5 would be considered light effort or a warm-up resistance.

• Time indicates the duration of your exercise. As I’ve talked about before, we want to get at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity (or 75 minutes of high intensity) aerobic activity per week. This is about 30 minutes per day, 5 days per week. You can even break it up- taking a 10-minute walk 3 times per day counts! Looking at our Talk Test intensity-gauge, Zones 2 or 3 is

considered “moderate intensity,” where Zones 4 or 5 are considered “vigorous.”

• Type is just that… what type of exercise are you doing? Treadmill, elliptical, recumbent bike, spin class, walking, yoga, pickleball, tennis, swimming, and the list goes on. There are a variety of ways to stay active and move your body, find what works for you… which brings us to E (which is often not included in literature, but is just as important).

• Enjoyment means what do YOU like to do and what is going to make YOU stay consistent. Just because your friends like to do Zumba, doesn’t mean it’s something you enjoy (my hips don’t move like that!) Maybe you like swimming, but others feel like the pool is for relaxing. I love spin classes, and have been a spin instructor for more than 12 years- others call me crazy (in fact, when I was pregnant, I taught a spin class the day I went to the hospital to have my daughter). You may enjoy pickleball, running marathons, or surfing. Whatever you enjoy will help you continue to do it. ACSM states that “consistency beats complexity” and the goal should be regular participation in any form.

Over time, your body becomes accustomed to what you do, which means your exercise program will need to be adjusted to provide benefits. Just as the efficacy of some medications decrease with long-term use, you may need to adjust any one of these elements to continue to challenge yourself. As your health improves, you’ll need to work harder to push your HR into Zones 2 and 3, which means that 30-minute morning walk you’ve been doing for months, may not be efficient anymore. If that walk isn’t putting you into Zone 2, you may need to tweak one of the other aspects of the FITTE principle- maybe you walk longer to get your HR up, or maybe you change the type by turning that walk into a light jog. When making changes to your exercise program, try not to change everything at once! Try to manipulate only one variable at a time so that you don’t push your body too far, too fast.

The FITTE principle isn’t about making exercise more complicated- it’s about giving yourself a plan for success. By paying

attention to how often you exercise, how hard you work, the duration you stay active, the types of activities you choose, and most importantly, what you enjoy, you can build an exercise routine that is both beneficial and sustainable. Remember, the best exercise program isn’t the one that’s trending on social media or the one your neighbor swears by- it’s the one you’ll actually enjoy and stick with. Start where YOU are, make small adjustments over time, and focus on consistency rather than perfection. Some days may be harder than others, but as long as you’re making an effort, some movement is better than none.

The Architectural Review Committee meets for planning purposes on the Plantation Manor Porch at 10:00am on Monday, July 6, 2026.

Application Review Agenda: Approve field approvals, old business, non-compliance violations, new business, adjourn.

All changes to your property that are visible on the outside require advance approval from the Architectural Review Committee. Application forms and ARC Guidelines may be obtained from the Community Services Association office or printed from The Great Outdoors Community Services Association website at www.tgocsa.org.

All completed ARC forms must be submitted to the CSA office by Noon on the Wednesday before the next Wednesday meeting. Results will be available to pick up after the ARC meeting or from the CSA Office.

Be sure ALL necessary paperwork is included with your ARC application.

No approval will be given without having all the required data available at the ARC Meeting for review.

The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) will provide owners with a clear understanding of what is allowed and when ARC approval is needed. Gaining ARC approval is facilitated through a responsive process that is easy to use.

The ARC Guidelines and Application Form are available for download at TGOCSA.org or you can also pick up an application in the CSA Office Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 8:00am until 5:00pm.

Applications must be submitted to the CSA Office by 12:00 Noon on the Wednesday prior to the following Wednesday meeting date to be considered at that meeting.

The ARC is elected by property owners. ARC has eleven members, ten elected from representative districts and one elected by the whole membership to serve as chairman. Each ARC term is two years.

Districts are determined by the last number of each address (ex: 324 Plantation would be District 4).

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules: • Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed.

Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

• Also, be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility - 321-264-5009. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station 321-264-5048.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Summer is here along with higher temperatures and the risk of Heat Stroke.

Here are the symptoms and the remedies.

Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body overheats and can no longer regulate its temperature, typically due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures or physical exertion in hot weather. Unlike heat exhaustion, heat stroke requires immediate medical attention, as it can quickly damage the brain, heart, kidneys, and muscles. Symptoms such as confusion, loss of consciousness, rapid heartbeat, and the absence of sweating despite the heat are critical warning signs. If not treated promptly, heat stroke can lead to permanent disability or even death. It’s not just a summer inconvenience... it’s a medical emergency.

• High body temperature (103° F or higher) • Hot, red, dry, or damp skin • Fast, strong pulse • Headache • Dizziness • Nausea • Confusion • Losing consciousness (passing out)

• Call 911 Right Away - Heat Stroke is a medical emergency • Move the person to a cooler place • Lower the person’s temperature with cool cloth or a cool bath • Do not give the person anything to drink

If you are experiencing problems with their service or need to set up a new service, call the number above. Tell them your community at The Great Outdoors has a bulk agreement known as the Bronze Package.

TGO Community Channel 732 Our television channel of the Community Services Association will be active for broadcasting board meetings. Your TV must be equipped with a Spectrum TV cable box or digital adapter.

Turf Masters regularly applies spray applications to our lawns and common areas that includes an herbicide for weed control, a liquid fertilizer, a granular nitrogen fertilizer and an insecticide to kill chinch bugs, and other turf-damaging insects.

Turf Masters is also offering “service-call” visits to TGO. If you are still having problems with lawn pests or weeds, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767, and we will put your address on the Turf Masters list.

Application dates are scheduled for July 6, 7 & 8, Sept 8, 9 & 10 Service Calls - July 23, August 6 & 20 Turf Masters advises all TGO residents to stay off treated areas of your lawn, and to keep your pets off treated areas, until the application has thoroughly dried.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.
