Dear TGO Community,

Happy Halloween! If you’re looking for some festive fun, stop by the CSA Office this afternoon for our Open House and Pumpkin Carving Contest. Later this evening, the Blue Heron will be hosting even more Halloween-themed festivities, including great food, drinks, and live entertainment from The Tiki Band.

This issue of The Happenings features several articles about our CSA administrative staff, along with photos from our recent Fall Employee Breakfast and the Employee of the Quarter.

North Brevard experienced record-setting rainfall this past Sunday - the most intense in recent history. TGO received nine inches of rain in less than six hours, while Titusville reported nearly fifteen inches during the same period. The Great Outdoors saw flooding on all our roads and overflowing lakes.

The good news: no one was injured, the water receded overnight, and so far there have been no reports of damage to homes or property. I’m proud of how our CSA crews responded. Courtesy Patrol worked to keep everyone safe during the flooding. Our maintenance team cleared drainage pathways and monitored our lift stations and wastewater plant, while the grounds and golf course crews spent the start of the week cleaning up after the storm. Because of the flooding, the golf course was closed for several days to allow for drying and cleanup.

Breakfast returns to the Blue Heron Restaurant next week! Coffee service begins at 7:00am, and the kitchen will serve breakfast from 8:00 to 11:00am, seven days a week. Some of your favorite breakfast items are back - with a few fun new names. Check out the full breakfast menu on page 39 of this issue, and please join us to support your Blue Heron Restaurant and its dedicated staff.

High season activities are now in full swing! Tomorrow, Saturday, November 1, is our Fall Garage Sale Day, followed by the Artisan Market in The Manor on Saturday, November 8. There are countless other activities, concerts, club events, and parties planned for the coming weeks and months. Be sure to look at the new “Mark Your Calendar” section on page 5 for details. These community events are a big part of what make TGO such a special place. I hope you’ll join in, have fun, and take a moment to thank the many volunteers who make it all happen.

Several improvement projects are also underway this fall. Our tennis courts remain closed while they’re being resurfaced and leveled. The Nature Trail will experience intermittent closures as we continue drainage improvements along the path. Last week, our grounds team refreshed all landscape beds with a new layer of mulch.

Finally, as our fall days grow shorter, don’t forget to “fall back” this Sunday morning, November 2 at 2:00am. With the time change, we’ve adjusted contractor hours to ensure no work occurs in the dark. Contractor hours are now officially 7:00am to 6:00pm. As a reminder, no construction work is allowed on Sundays or holidays.

Sincerely,

On the Cover:

This year’s LGA Breast Cancer Tournament proved to be another great success raising over $18,500. Lynne Anderson, Susan Jensen, Dawn England, Coletta Gabele and Kathy Shulby were just a part of the team that helped make it all happen.

Thank you from the LGA Breast Cancer Tournament

Dear Friends,

I’m thrilled to share that this year’s LGA Breast Cancer Tournament was a wonderful success! Over $18,500 was raised this past weekend, bringing our total contributions since the tournament began in 2016 to more than $66,500. Every dollar goes directly to Parrish’s breast cancer program, helping local patients in need - supporting our community.

We were blessed with perfect weather, and 132 enthusiastic golfers joined us on the course. Everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch, and the camaraderie and laughter made it a truly special day. What began as a small event within our LGA group has grown into something so meaningful, all while staying true to our goal: to support people right here in our community.

This cause is particularly close to my heart, having faced breast cancer twice myself. Both of my cancers were detected on mammograms - I couldn’t feel either one - so I’m a big advocate for regular screenings. Mammograms, combined with self-examinations, are an essential first line of defense. The process is simple, quick, and can save lives. The funds we raise help people who might not otherwise have access to these vital services.

Since partnering with Parrish’s breast cancer program, we’ve seen firsthand how much of a difference local support can make. They provide vouchers for mammograms, counseling, wigs, and prostheses - everything a patient may need following a diagnosis. By keeping our efforts local, we know that every contribution truly reaches those who need it most.

Thank you to all the golfers, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters who made this year’s tournament possible. Your generosity, energy, and spirit make this event a joy to organize and a powerful force in our community.

I’d also like to thank my Co-Chair, Lynne Anderson, whose hard work, organization, and dedication were instrumental in making this year’s tournament such a success.

Here’s to another year of hope, health, and helping those affected by breast cancer.

With gratitude,

Susan Jensen

UPDATE OF THE BABY OPOSSUMS

BETTY SALTER TAKES THE HELM AS NATURE CENTER PRESIDENT

We Find That Many Folks Aren’t Aware…

The Nature Center at TGO is a non-profit 501c(3), receives no funding from the CSA. We are considered a vital part of our community.

You may recall many months ago we reported on a sad story about a mother opossum and her babies. On April 22, a mother opossum was struck by a vehicle on East Plantation and the animal was left severely injured and suff ering. Shortly afterward, Donna Pittman came upon the scene and contacted our wildlife rescue team for help.

We rely COMPLETELY on:

FALL FUN FAIR & PLANT PALOOZA

The Nature Center at The Great Outdoors is pleased to announce Betty Salter as the center’s new president. Betty brings a wealth of knowledge, personal contacts and experience to the Nature Center, with an impressive background in education, wildlife knowledge, and groundbreaking work at the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. Here at TGO she dedicates tireless work as a TGO Wildlife Rescue and Nature Center Trail Guide, and spent years rescuing wildlife at TGO and the surrounding area. She has also led the Nature Center Trail hikes every Monday and Wednesday during “the season” for over 10 years.

tours, and to re-introduce golf cart tours of the Blue Heron Water Treatment Plant. Betty realizes many of our TGO residents work during the week, and she hopes to have Saturday morning hikes and more weekend programs.

Saturday, November 15, 2025 10:00am - 2:00pm

A true life-learner, Betty’s passion is to share the joy of nature with others, whether it’s knowledge of plants, wildlife, wildlife rescue and preservation, or simply the general love of being outdoors.

Bring your appetite! We’ll be selling delicious grilled hot dogs, chips, and drinks - $5 for the combo, while supplies last. Many fun fall activities and exhibits are being planned for your whole family to enjoy, including a TGO-style hayride!

Inside her pouch were seven tiny babies, each barely an inch long.

Betty’s career began in education, where she was with the school board and an exceptional education teacher assistant. In 1999 she began working for Parks and Recreation, North Area Parks Operation Office, where she initiated many innovative programs. She and her late husband Cary retired in February 2008.

These funds are necessary to maintain:

• Nature Center Building

• Security Systems

• Lawn and Grounds

In the Plant Palooza section you will be able to buy, sell, or swap plants with other TGO residents and learn about Florida’s native plants! You can donate plants to the Nature Center to sell - or swap your plants.

We look forward to seeing you at The Nature Center.

Rehabber and TGO Resident Nancy Clark reports “Thanks to the dedication of their caregivers, fi ve of the seven survived. After 16 weeks of around-the-clock care and rehabilitation, those fi ve young opossums were strong, healthy, and ready for life in the wild. They were released back into their natural habitat in mid-August - a beautiful success story born from compassion and care.”

Betty has devoted over 7,000 hours of volunteer time to the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. A friend at the refuge encouraged her to consider living in TGO. Betty and Cary moved to The Great Outdoors in October of 2014, and immediately became immersed with The Nature Center. Betty had known Sandy Juba for some time, as Sandy volunteered at the refuge as well. Their great friendship and desire to rescue and teach

Betty jokes that one of the first steps to get involved with wildlife rescue, at Sandy’s insistence, was to overcome her fear of snakes. After researching snakes for many months and creating brochures about them, she overcame her fears, and has frequently rescued many of them! She also became very active with Firewise. Betty initiated the Spring Festival at the Nature Center. She previously developed large festivals for the county and wanted to develop a smaller festival here. Sandy Juba gave Betty a list of local vendors to contact, and the annual festival was launched, continues to grow and become a fund

Do you love the Nature Trails, Hikes, Speakers and all the opportunities living here that the Nature Center provides? Then please consider becoming a member, making a monetary donation, or a donation of furniture or other household items. Betty’s nature expertise includes extensive studies of native Florida plants and insects. One of her many butterfly studies led to the discovery of new species not known to our area. (The Variegated Fritillary was not known to be in Brevard County and the Eastern Pygmy Blue was not expected to be west of I-95 but we have it in the marsh here!) Thank you Nancy, Sandy and Donna.

Emergency

Evacuations - Part 2 - When is it time to leave TGO? By

Be Ready Before You Have to Go

When you plan a vacation, packing is easy. But disasters - hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, or wildfires - don’t wait. That’s why the National Fire Protection Association, FEMA, AARP, and other organizations recommend a “Go Bag,” a kit of essentials you can grab instantly if you must leave home.

In a large-scale evacuation, traffic may be heavy and services limited. You could be stuck on the road for hours, so pack as if you’ll be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.

Building Your Go Bag

Bag: Choose a sturdy, portable bag - a duffle or small roller bag works best.

Food & Water: Pack three days’ worth per person and pet. Include lightweight, nutrient-dense foods like protein bars, instant oatmeal, nuts, and dried fruit. Plan for one gallon of water per person and pet per day. Don’t forget a manual can opener and pet bowls.

Personal & Medical Items: Bring toiletries, first-aid kit, a change of clothes, waterproof layer, glasses or contacts, hearing aid batteries, medications, and any pet medications.

Tools & Gear: Include an emergency blanket, duct tape, scissors, work gloves, towels, matches, flashlight, extra batteries, phone charger, and a hand-crank radio if possible.

Documents & Cash: Keep copies of passports, birth certificates, driver’s licenses, insurance papers, and home or vehicle titles in a waterproof bag. Upload key documents and photos to a secure digital vault. Store some cash in small bills in case credit or debit cards don’t work.

Store your Go Bag where it’s easy to reach, review annually, and update as your family’s needs change. For more guidance, visit ready.gov, readyforwildfire.org, FEMA.gov, or AARP.

Going to a Shelter

If evacuation requires a shelter, remember: shelters are safe but not comfortable. They may open at TGO temporarily, or further north in Titusville or Brevard County. Bring your Go Bag, plus:

• Sleeping gear: blankets, pillows, cots, or sleeping bags

• Three days of food if you have special dietary needs

• Medications and medical equipment (wheelchair, oxygen, dressings, etc.)

• Entertainment items like books, games, or cards

• Personal hygiene items: toothbrush, deodorant, towels, dentures, glasses

• Disabilities or Special Needs: Prepare a personal plan. Identify essential items and equipment to stay independent for three days, and make sure they’re in your kit.

• Shelter Options & Rules: Brevard County offers three types of shelters:

• Primary Evacuation, Special Needs Shelters, Pet-Friendly Shelters Only go to a shelter when officials announce it’s opencheck TV, radio, social media, or the Brevard County Emergency Management website. Shelters are mainly for residents of barrier islands, flood-prone areas, mobile homes, or those without other safe options.

Tips for Shelter Life:

Stay calm and bring your Go Bag • Pack sleeping gear, clothing, and sturdy shoes • Bring food that fits your dietary needs

Understand electricity may be limited

Rules:

Respect staff, facilities, and fellow evacuees.

No disorderly behavior, smoking, alcohol, drugs, or weapons. Sign in when you arrive and out when you leave.

Remember: A shelter is a lifeboat, not a cruise ship. It’s meant to keep you safe, not comfortable.

Final Thoughts

Preparedness may seem daunting, but every step helps. The CSA has an evacuation plan and map on the TGO website. Review it now, build and update your Go Bag, and practice your plan with your family. Pay attention to weather alerts and local instructions. Your Go Bag might never be needed - but if disaster strikes, being ready will make all the difference.

Three Titusville Fun Facts

If you've been to a concert by Rascal Flatts, Fleetwood Mac, Kid Rock, Melissa Etheridge, Bruce Springsteen or even Demi Lavato, there's a good chance you witnessed a piece of Titusville on stage.

All of these music artists have a common link to the Space Coast, and it's that their bands include musical instruments made right here in Titusville. Gold Tone Music Group is a worldwide brand that sits in an unassuming location right on Hopkins Avenue. The location houses its family-run factory, and works with music distributors worldwide. Its biggest distributor? Amazon.

Gold Tone is as inconspicuously famous as it gets. Many Titusvillians aren't aware that this musical power player is right in their backyard. Folk musicians Wayne and Robyn Rogers opened a music store in Brevard in the 1970s but eventually developed a "traveling banjo," which put their business on the map. The company now carries five different product lines, including the "zero glide" nut system the company patented. That's a special part that reduces contact between the string and the nut of an instrument.

The Gheenoe, a popular fishing boat developed and sold in Titusville. For those who want the maneuverability of a canoe, but the balance and strength of a fishing boat, behold the Gheenoe.

The Gheenoe is a boat developed by Harley Gheen, who was an avid fisherman and senior designer at Kennedy Space Center in the 1960s. He abandoned his career to develop his specialized fishing boat, which decades later is legend among fishermen worldwide. There are four models of Gheenoe boats manufactured at the Gheenoe location on State Road 405 in Titusville and two additional models manufactured on Childre Ave. Gheenoe is now run by Harley’s two sons, Sam and “Pugar.”

Titusville was not always Titusville; It was once “Sand Point,” a name many wish would have stuck.

The name was changed after Colonel Henry Titus won a domino game against Captain Clark Rice in 1873 for naming rights. Titus was the unofficial postmaster of the town and when it became incorporated in 1867, he gave the city his namesake.

Scott Lancaster - Employee of the Quarter

If there’s something that needs to be done, all you have to do is ask - though often, by the time you do, Scott has already taken care of it! His “see it, do it” proactive work ethic is truly remarkable.

Whether it’s a project for the Recreation Department or assistance needed elsewhere, Scott is always ready to lend a hand and help get the job done. If another department needs an extra set of hands, his are among the first to show up. Recently, Scott almost singlehandedly transformed the planting bed behind the Manor pool - removing old plants, installing new ones, laying weed barrier, and shoveling rock - all while still maintaining his regular duties.

Residents have often commented on his tireless drive and his determination to see every task through to completion. This quarter’s selection of Scott Lancaster as Employee of the Quarter was not only an easy administrative decision, but also one wholeheartedly supported by our residents. Congratulations, Scott, on a job well done!

Behind The Scenes - Meet The CSA Staff

Sharon Sanford: CSA Assistant Manager

When you pay an assessment or receive an election notice at The Great Outdoors, there’s a good chance you’ve benefited from the careful, behindthe-scenes work of Sharon Sanford, our Community Assistant Manager and LCAM. This November marks seven years since Sharon joined the CSA team - a role she says keeps her “busy at all times,” and one she clearly loves.

Sharon’s work touches nearly every corner of TGO operations. She processes assessment payments, prepares meeting minutes and notices, coordinates elections, maintains ballot requests, helps implement new programs, and assists with everything from front desk coverage to HR and accounting. “I wear many hats here,” she says with a smile. “Every day is something different.”

Her path to the CSA office began right here at TGO. “My career started in the Mail Facility with Kathy,” Sharon recalls. Later, a call from former employee Donna Edinger led her to the front office - twice! “I had to leave when my mom became ill, but while I was in Minnesota, Donna called again and asked if I could cover for someone on maternity leave. I jumped at the chance, found a place to rent, and have been here ever since.”

A Minnesota native from Mounds View, Sharon spent much of her earlier career in banks and credit unions, where she developed skills that serve her well today - customer service, payments, deposits, and supervising employees. Her favorite part of the job now? “The employees and the owners,” she says. “They make every day worthwhile.”

Outside of work, Sharon enjoys spending time with her granddaughters - Zada, Rebel, and Lilith - especially on golf cart rides or trips to the pool. In December, she’ll head to Texas to visit her grandson, Gage. She loves country and ‘80s soft rock, cheering for the Minnesota Vikings and Twins, and relaxing with HGTV shows.

If she could travel anywhere, it would be Ireland. “The nature there is so beautiful - green flowing hills and flowers,” she says. And if she could trade places with anyone for a day? “The younger me, so I could see my parents again.”

Behind the scenes but always essential, Sharon helps keep TGO running smoothly - and always with a touch of heart.

Carolyn Banke: Human Resources Manager

If there’s one person who can turn an ordinary workday into something worth smiling about, it’s Carolyn Banke, our ever-upbeat Human Resources guru here at The Great Outdoors. This coming February marks three years since she joined the team - though from her enthusiasm, you’d think she’s been sprinkling joy around the office much longer.

“I got lucky!” Carolyn says about how she landed at TGO. After leaving a long career in management, she decided to take a leap of faith - and Google. “I typed ‘Titusville jobs’ into my computer, and this came up. I applied, got a call from Billy Specht the next day, and here I am!”

Carolyn’s favorite part of her job is simple: keeping employees happy. Whether she’s solving workplace hiccups, organizing events, or delivering surprise treats, she takes pride in building a workplace where people feel appreciated. “My favorite part of my job really is employee satisfaction,” she says. “And I especially love planning Christmas!”

Originally from Brentwood, Long Island, Carolyn remembers New York fondly for its beaches, lakes, farms and, of course, “The City.” She admits she misses the changing seasons - but Florida sunshine and pool days are a fair trade. “I can always visit the cold when I miss it,” she laughs.

Before joining TGO, Carolyn spent most of her life in management and supervision. “Everyone always told me I was a great leader,” she says - and it’s easy to believe. She credits her people skills, hiring know-how, and compassion for helping her thrive at the HR position.

Outside of work, Carolyn knows how to live life fully. She loves relaxing by the pool or heading to the beach, hiking, going to concerts, yoga, watching football (of course), and spending time with her family. She also volunteers at local stables helping handicapped children ride horses.

Few people know she plays piano, enjoys bowling and fishing, and is currently learning to golf. “I’m working on the swing - but I’ve got the outfit down,” she jokes.

Her favorite movie? Christmas Vacation. Favorite actor? “Denzel - he’s never in a bad movie.”

With her big laugh, big heart, and endless energy, Carolyn proves that work really can feel like family - especially when HR brings the snacks.

Behind The Scenes - Meet The CSA Staff

Monica Ali-Gordon, CPA: CSA Controller

If you’ve ever wondered who keeps the financial heartbeat of The Great Outdoors steady and precise, look no further than Monica Ali-Gordon, our diligent Controller of the Association. Since joining in March 2020, Monica has been making sure every number tells the right story - and that story matters.

Monica’s days are a whirlwind of accounting wizardry. She oversees budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting, prepares statements, books journal entries, crunches budget spreadsheets, and even tackles special projects ranging from asset tagging to advanced data analysis. “The numbers,” she says, “if you look closely enough, tell a story and lead to answers and more questions.”

A Miami native, Monica’s path to TGO was built on decades of experience. Her early work included everything from department store HR assistant to bank teller, but her passion led her to accounting. She started as a staff auditor at a public accounting firm in Miami, eventually becoming an audit manager. Her career took her across the globe as an internal auditor of a multi-national aviation company, ensuring compliance with FAA regulations, before moving to the Space Coast to continue as an audit manager at a public accounting firm. After a year off to marry and travel, Monica found her calling at TGO - and she hasn’t looked back.

Her secret to success? “It starts with a foundation of great education and on-the-job training,” she explains. With a bachelor’s degree from Florida International University, an MBA from Nova Southeastern University, and CPA certification in Florida, Monica has spent 20 years mastering her craft - and she continues with ongoing education to stay sharp and ethical in all she does.

Outside the office, Monica loves to travel, swim, speak Spanish, and spend time with her husband and three year old son. She’s a fan of all Florida sports teams, cheers for the Miami Heat, Panthers, and Dolphins, and enjoys movies like Pretty Woman or shows like Friends and Emily in Paris. If she could trade places with anyone for a day, it would be - no surprise - Taylor Swift.

Though she works mostly behind the scenes, Monica wants residents to know how serious she and Tim, her accounting assistant, take their responsibility. “We work diligently, efficiently, and take pride in fiduciary handling of the resident’s money,” she says.

Margarete Shaw: ARC Secretary

Keeping TGO beautiful takes both vision and structure - something Margarete Shaw, our ARC Secretary, understands perfectly. She works closely with residents to guide them through the approval process, making sure every detail is handled with care and professionalism.

For nearly three years, Margarete has been helping residents navigate the world of Architectural Review - a job that blends communication, organization, and diplomacy in equal measure. “I love working with the owners,” she says. “Putting a smile on most of them and making the process as easy as possible is what I enjoy most.”

Her path to the ARC office came with a little nudge from home. “My husband was a Security Patrol Officer here for nine years,” she recalls. “When this position opened up, he ran home, grabbed my résumé, and said, ‘I found the perfect job for you!’ Turns out, he was right.”

As ARC Secretary, Margarete ensures that all paperwork is complete, accurate, and ready for review - a task that requires not just attention to detail, but also grace under pressure. “People don’t always realize how important the ARC is,” she explains. “We live in a community where homes are close together, and it’s our job to help everyone respect those boundaries and take pride in how beautiful TGO looks.”

A Florida girl at heart, Margarete was born in New York but grew up in Daytona Beach, where her love of the ocean began. Before joining TGO, she worked as a paralegal for 15 years in Polk County. With a Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida and a Paralegal degree from South Florida, she brings a professional touch - and her legal background comes in handy more often than you’d think.

When she’s not keeping TGO’s aesthetics in order, Margarete stays busy with crafts, musicals at the Titusville Playhouse, and cruising adventures with her husband. She’s also a professional knitter - yes, really! After completing a rigorous two-year certification with The Knitting Guild of America, she now works with two designers in New York, and her name even appears in their published books.

Her favorite movie is Sleepless in Seattle , her favorite music is Bruce Springsteen, and if she could trade places with anyone for a day, it’d be Meryl Streep - “for her grace, impact, and respect.”

Behind The Scenes - Meet The CSA Staff

Sabrina Priske: Lead CSA Representative

Walk into the CSA office on any given day, and you’re likely to be greeted by Sabrina Priske — a warm smile, a helpful attitude, and maybe even a dog treat in hand. As Lead CSA Representative, Sabrina has spent nearly five years making life at The Great Outdoors just a little smoother for everyone who calls it home.

Her days are full - and never the same twice. “Every day is a surprise here,” she says with a laugh. “Nicole and I can always help, work out a situation, reach out to the right department, or even reunite a lost phone with its owner. My job duties are to order CSA office supplies, handle all condo and HOA documents, accounting and annual billing. I enter closings for new owners, keep up with CSA storage rentals and contracts, compile lawn treatments and services, assist with assessment payments and offer back-up support for Sharon. It’s difficult to truly list everything we do,” Sabrina admits. “But we love being the faces most everyone recognizes.”

Her path to TGO came after a long career in law. “I retired from my paralegal position after 25 years when the attorney I worked for became a Brevard County judge,” she recalls. “After a month of not working, I realized retirement wasn’t for me!” So, she applied for an opening at the CSA office, met with Billy, Sharon, and Carmella, and was offered the job. “It’s been a gift,” she says. “The wildlife, the natural beauty, the people - this place is special. Even when it gets hectic, it’s still where I love to be every day.”

An Orlando native (“I was there when Mickey Mouse moved in!” she jokes), Sabrina remembers the quiet, orange-grove-filled days before the tourists came. Now, she’s happily rooted on the Space Coast, tending to her gardens, volunteering at church, and spending time with her daughter and three granddaughters.

A lover of classic movies (White Christmas, Sabrina, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes) and old Hollywood stars like Cary Grant and James Stewart, Sabrina’s tastes are timeless - though she admits, “I’m also a senior Swiftie!”

When asked what she wants residents to know about her role, her answer is simple and heartfelt: “That I love my job here at TGO - and the residents are the very reason I do.”

From coffee-fueled mornings to wagging tails at the CSA counter, Sabrina brings warmth, grace, and genuine care to every day at The Great Outdoors.

Nicole Farrell: Customer Service Representative

If you’ve ever stopped by the CSA office and been greeted by a cheerful voice ready to solve your problem - or at least make you laugh while she’s doing it - you’ve likely met Nicole Farrell, our Customer Service Representative.

This November marks two years since Nicole joined The Great Outdoors team, and she’s made quite an impression. Her days are a whirlwind of messages, work orders, propane sales, barcodes, and coordinating with her office teammate, Sabrina. “Communication is key,” she says. “We assist owners, guests, tenants, board members, volunteers - and still try to keep a smile through it all!”

Nicole manages an impressive list of responsibilities, from recreation key transitions to signage, new owner packets, lighting issues, and even The Happenings Classified Ads. “Some days it’s about fixing a light post; other days, it’s listening to stories about a new puppy or a life change,” she says. “Life is busy at TGO!”

Born in Munich, Germany, Nicole grew up the daughter of an Army officer and spent summers in Berlin with her grandparents before settling in Florida. She later moved to Georgia for 35 years, where she built an extensive career in hospitality, property management, and international business. “I’ve always worked with people,” she says. “Patience and problem-solving go a long way - especially when customers demand a lot.”

Her favorite part of the job? “The people,” she says without hesitation. “TGO has such an amazing community - interesting folks from all walks of life, each with their own story. No two days are ever the same, and that’s what I love.”

Outside of work, Nicole enjoys the finer things: cooking, wine, gardening (when her plants cooperate with the Florida weather), and spending time with friends and family. She even helped start a Dinner Club in Atlanta 30 years ago that still meets today - proof that great food and laughter never go out of style.

When she’s not rooting for the Braves or Georgia Bulldogs, you might find her dreaming of Greece - for the food, the views, and the romance. And if she could trade places with anyone for a day? “Grace Kelly,” she says. “I deserve a prince and a crown!”

Graceful, witty, and endlessly kind, Nicole proves that customer service isn’t just about solving problems - it’s about making connections, one smile at a time.

Chrissy’s Catering Corner:

Did you know that Pumpkin is considered a superfood? It’s viewed as a vegetable, but is scientifically a fruit, because of its seeds. Primary facts: Pumpkin is relatively low in calories and is 94% water. It is packed with Vitamin A and antioxidants that protect skin and can lower the risk of eye diseases. These same antioxidants neutralize free radicals, which may protect again certain cancers. Here’s a little known secret – pumpkin pairs well with vodka! Who knew?

TODAY’S RECIPE: Pumpkin Martini – Delish !

1 ½ oz vodka

¼ tsp vanilla extract

1 oz Bailey’s Irish Cream

1 oz pumpkin puree

½ oz maple syrup

1 pinch each of pumpkin spice and cinnamon

Crushed graham crackers

Directions: Wet the rim of a martini glass (chilled first if you like) (syrup works well here too) then turn the glass over into the crushed crackers to ‘rim’ your glass. In a cocktail shaker go all the wet ingredients (vodka, vanilla, Bailey’s, pumpkin and syrup). Shake until frothy. Strain the mix into the rimmed glass then top with the pumpkin spice and cinnamon. For added decadence you can top with Cool Whip.

How Long Is That Street? Now you know...

For the new residents at TGO who are always asking, here are your answers. If you are a walker, runner, walk your dog, or ride a bike it's always good to know how far you are going. With the use of a Rodometer (measuring wheel), we charted the entire park - we even did some streets twice, just to check our consistency. If you are a gambling person, we don't think you should bet the farm on these numbers, but we do feel they are close enough to help you chart out a 26,400 foot walk. Enjoy.

Funny Thing Is… I Swear... Golf or Bowling

I’ve come to realize there are two kinds of sporting seniors: the golfers and the bowlers. The similarities are that both encourage comradery and drinking while playing (for obvious reasons). Both will send bartenders to your location in case you’re not drinking enough. Also, when finished, both usually end up at a bar drinking beer. That’s where the similarities end.

My first observation is the equipment. The golfers bring an expensive bag with around 14 clubs, each of which can be purchased for approximately the price of one month of cable tv with HBO, MAX, ESPN and other specialty channels. They also fill their bags with dozens of expensive newly purchased balls with logos of famous golfers or courses. The bowler brings a bag with usually one ball, probably purchased when Nixon was president. Their balls have names of 1950’s era horror movie monsters like Predator, Raptor, or The Obliterator.

In golf they tend to lose most of those new balls to the woods, lakes, or people’s yards and you may have four people looking and never find it. In bowling they never lose a ball - they don’t have to move an inch because the ball comes right back to them.

Next, the conditions. Golfers chase a little white ball across acres of mosquito and gator infested habitat. It requires good weather, hopefully dry and less than 100 degree heat index. In bowling it’s always 72 degrees and they can play during a hurricane or snowstorm with the only hazard being if the power goes out or the beer tap runs dry. In bowling people cheer when you destroy the pins. In golf people swear at you when you destroy the screen on their patio.

Now the clothing. In golf they are nicely dressed in everything from turn of the century knickers to plaid pants, to expensive cardigan sweaters, and don’t forget that Gatsby cap on the guys. At the end of the game there is a strong smell of sweat or bug spray usually requiring a shower. In bowling they wear shirts with their names on the back so if they forget who they are someone can always read it to them. At the end of the game there is a strong smell of spilled beer or soda usually requiring a shower. So golf or bowling? Being a good Catholic boy I swear I lean toward the sport which causes me to swear the least.

It’s Not Too Early: Getting a Head Start on Your Year-End Taxes

As the year winds down, now is the perfect time to get your financial house in order before the holiday rush and the start of 2026. A little preparation in October and November can save a lot of time - and stress - come tax season.

1. Gather Your Paperwork Early

Start pulling together receipts, income records, charitable donation confirmations, and medical expense statements. If you sold property, investments, or a vehicle this year, make sure you have the paperwork handy. The more you can organize now, the easier it will be when forms start arriving in January.

2. Review Your Deductions

If you itemize deductions, look at where you stand. You might still have time to make additional charitable contributions, prepay certain expenses, or make energy-efficient improvements that could qualify for credits.

3. Check Your Retirement Contributions

It’s a good time to review contributions to IRAs or 401(k)s. Adding even a small amount before year-end can reduce your taxable income and boost your retirement savings.

4. Don’t Forget Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)

For those 73 and older, RMDs from retirement accounts must be taken by December 31. Missing that deadline can result in hefty penalties, so double-check your accounts.

5. Think Ahead for 2026

If you’re planning large purchases, home improvements, or property sales in the coming year, talk with your financial advisor about how timing could affect your taxes. A little foresight can go a long way.

Taking care of these items before year-end lets you start the new year organized and confident - with more time to focus on the holidays, family, and everything that makes life at TGO enjoyable.

Emergency Vehicle Protocol

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

Contractor Restrictions

Contractors employed for repairs, construction, renovation, or installation at residences that are in The Great Outdoors are not allowed to work on Sunday, except in an emergency or with the advance permission of the CSA. Introducing The Automated Door App for Fitness Center, Hobby Land and The Juke Box

The Great Outdoors is excited to announce that CSA will be using the pdk.io App and Fob for the automated doors at the Fitness Center, Hobby Land and The Juke Box. The transition will begin after Labor Day weekend. As we transition to the new system, CSA requests that you call to make an appointment by calling CSA at 321-268-9767. Recreation Doors will be open for regular business hours as usual each day, no Fob or App needed during those hours. For after hours, the current key will still be functioning for entry until we conclude our transition. Please be patient as we transition, CSA will accommodate all residents as they return to The Great Outdoors through the Fall busy season. There are two options:

1) Schedule your appointment, exchange key for the new Fob that we activate at our CSA Office. If you don’t have a key, you may purchase a Fob for $20.00 and activate it with us in the CSA office.

2) Schedule an appointment and return your key for a $10.00 refund and activate your pdk.io App for Free. We will ask you a few questions, you will download the FREE pdk.io App on your cell phone. Our CSA office will activate the App and pdk.io will send an invitation to your email for you to activate. You will set up your own access on your cell phone with the code they send you to activate the App. You can then use your cell phone for access and use after hours. Even easier, if no key to exchange - CSA can gather your information and send you the invitation. You can set it up yourself on your cell phone at your convenience.

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:

• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris.

The crew has to pick this up!

• Also, be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alli gator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.
