Mid-February is always a memorable time in the life of the Hornet Nation. Of course there's the Valentine's Day factor, but we're more concerned with the fact that Emporia State University will celebrate its 151st anniversary, drawing its sesquicentennial observance to a close. It's been an amazing year filled with successes on the academic, athletic, and fundraising fronts. You're cordially invited to join us for the celebrating! NEW FACES AT ESU-KC For this month’s newsletter, we had the pleasure of interviewing ESU’s New SLIM Director!

Lindsey Warner is the School of Library & Information Management (SLIM) Program Director at ESU-KC location. She is a Shawnee Mission South High School graduate. Lindsey attended Kansas State University and graduated in 2010

with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with an ESL Concentration and a minor in Spanish. She continued her education at Emporia State University and received her Master of Library Science Degree in 2013.

NEW FACES AT ESU-KC For this month’s newsletter, we had the pleasure of interviewing ESU’s New Kansas City Admissions Representative!

Amir Cuffe is an admissions counselor at Emporia State University—Kansas City. He was born in Olathe, KS and graduated from Olathe Northwest High School in 2009. Amir earned his Bachelors degree at Emporia State University in May of 2013. He majored in Rehabilitation Services and received a minor in Leadership and another minor in Gender and Ethnic Studies. ESU offered the perfect variety for Amir. “I enjoyed the small class sizes, the study abroad program and all of the close connections I’ve been able to share with my professors.” Amir

NEW FACES AT ESU-KC For this month’s newsletter, we had the pleasure of interviewing our new GA at ESU-KC, Jessica Gambrel!

Jessica is a new graduate student in ESU-KC’s

School

Counseling program. She was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa and graduated from Johnston High School in 2008. Jessica received her Bachelors degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 2012 and majored in Psychology. She also received minors in Family Services and in Studio Art. Jessica is a Graduate Assistant and new student in the

School Counseling program. “I fell in love with this place during an extensive college search and I am just so thankful everything worked out the way it did. My classes are awesome and my professors truly care about their students. I feel that [Emporia State Kansas City] is a rare gem of a place and I am so lucky our paths crossed. In her free time, Jessica enjoys traveling, scrapbooking, oil

painting, reading, shopping, and wasting time on pinterest! Advice for distance students

Take advantage of everything. This is the moment in life where more people than ever are willing and able to help you.

More Buzz from ESU-KC The Department of English, Modern Languages, & Journalism and the Office of International Office (OIE) is offering a Study Abroad opportunity to all students in Ronda (Malaga), Spain this coming summer, 2014. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship deadline for Summer/Fall 2014 is Tuesday, March 4 th! Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and open to all U.S. citizen undergraduates, in good academic standing, who meet the criteria listed below: 

The applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of his/her study abroad program or internship.

The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program or internship eligible for credit by the student's accredited institution of higher education in the U.S.

The applicant is studying or interning abroad for at least four weeks in one country. Programs going to more than one country are eligible if the student will be in one country for at least four consecutive weeks.

The applicant is studying or interning abroad in any country except Cuba or a country on the U.S. Department of State's current Travel Warning list.

If you are planning on studying abroad this Summer or Fall 2014, the ESU Study Abroad Application Packet is due Monday, March 24th by 5pm! Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above to apply. If your GPA is 3.0 or above, consider applying for the ESU Travel Grant which is also due March 24th.
