OPENSANS

In 1997, Steve Matteson, then Type Director at Ascender Corp., designed the humanist sans serif typeface Open Sans. There are a total of 897 characters included in this version, including ISO Latin 1, Latin CE, Greek and Cyrillic. A neutral, but friendly appearance, an upright stress, and open forms define Open Sans. This typeface has excellent legibility characteristics and has been optimised for print, web, and mobile devices. Hebrew was added to the family in March 2021 as a variable font family. 10pt

History of Open Sans

Web designers often use Open Sans in flat design styles. Google uses Open Sans on some of its web pages and in its print and web advertisements. Designed for legibility across print, web, and mobile interfaces, it has an upright stress and open forms. It is the official font of the UK’s Labour, Co-operative, and Liberal Democratic parties. A total of 12 versions are available of Open Sans, including six weights (Light 300, Normal 400, Medium 500, Semi-Bold 600, Bold 700, Extra Bold 800), each with an italic version, although only the Medium and Medium Italic styles are accepted into Adobe Fonts as of yet. Among the stylistic alternatives are a serif capital ‘i’ (for scenarios in which it could be confused with a number ‘1’ or lower case ‘L’), as well as a single or double-storey ‘g’ option. As a lining figure, a proportional text figure, or a tabular figure, numbers can be set up in any way you like.

Designer Steve Matteson

A type designer, historian, and letterpress printer, Steve Matteson is the Creative Type Director for Monotype. His typeface portfolio includes 80 families for companies like Toyota, Microsoft and Google, as well as a dozen revivals of Frederic Goudy’s typefaces. It was at Rochester Institute of Technology’s School of Printing that he learned letterpress and desktop publishing. He learned the importance of high quality craftsmanship through typography, calligraphy, design, and fine printing. During 1990, Steve worked with the team responsible for making the first TrueType fonts for Microsoft and opened Monotype’s California branch office. His work can be found in the majority of eReader products, mobile phones, and primarily on the web; the Open Sans family receives more than 29 billion page views each week as a result of his commitment to creating the greatest typefaces for digital settings.

In order to determine whether typeface design can affect how long a driver keeps their eyes off the road, Steve collaborated with MIT’s Agelab in 2012. The ensuing legibility study has provided guidance to user interface designers for the automotive and aviation industries on how to best utilise typographic displays. Steve is an active printer and metal type user who serves on the board of the Books Arts League in Lafayette, Colorado.
