Façade System 01: Eggcrate

Advantages Sun Shading Allows daylight to filter through but resist radiation. The structure act as a sun filtering device to create thermal comfort within building. This egg crate system is commonly used to control the sun penetration from the East and West. The openings with various sizes helps to regulate the light intensity.

Ventilation The egg crate system also acts passive ventilation system as it maximizes the wind flow into the building through the openings.

Disadvantages Tropical Box House by WHBC Architects

View Restriction Overuse of this egg crate system can block some positive views.

A concrete tropical box that embraces the lush jungle. The project was envisioned as an inward-looking abode that safeguards its interior from the tropical sun and rain while at the same time, embraces the dense, natural floral enclave that the house sits within.

Cleaning and Maintenance Problems of cleaning as water could be collected and become mold over time.

Integration into Community Centre Eggcrate façade provides shading as well as ventilation in a semi-closed space that can prevent from harsh sunlight to enter the space.

Façade System 02: Perforated Brick Wall

Advantages Aesthetics Provide an attractive rustic or elegant look for a home or building, depending on the material used and the workers’ expertise.

Resistance Offers a high resistance against rotting, pests, weather, and natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes

Ngamwongwan House by Jun Sekino These words truly portray the potential of an ordinary material; the comprehension of a material which is considered as the petite component that can be composed as the architecture. The initiation of the project with the primary concept that focuses on the curiosity of the most common material, a brick. For the design of this building, this building was built in the tropical area; thus, it needs to reflect the tropical living lifestyle.

Cost-efficient Costs less in terms of labor and materials as compared to using wood.

Disadvantages Weight Involves heavy materials such as bricks, stone or concrete blocks.

Stability Dependent on sturdy and good foundation.

Roof System: Steel Sloping Roof

Advantages Long lasting Steel roof can last for more than 30 years and can withstand harsh weathers. Besides, they are rust and fire-resistant.

Energy efficient Steel roof reflects UV that results in lesser usage of mechanical ventilation such as air conditioners to cool down the building.

Sectional perspective showing the timber trusses and steel roof which a person can climb/walk on due to its sloping degree.

Eco friendly Steel roofs do not absorb moisture so the chances of mold to grow are low.

They are also recyclable and resusable.

House in Usuki by Kenta Eto Architects In the vicinity, there are scattered fields and houses, and the landscape of mountainous terrain of about 600 meters high continues on the south side. To make use of “difference in level / viewpoint of environment / topography” and the shape that is on the extension of the environment and topography.

Disadvantages Costly Steel roof can be costly because of its complex installation even though its worthy in the long term.

Dent easily If large objects hit the steel roof, it might leave a mark.

Integration into Community Centre Steel slopping roof is ideal because of its slopping degree that allows rainwater to flow down and be collected at the bottom for the community centre usage.

Floor System: Composite floor System

Advantages Long spans Can be built up to 4.5m in length.

Versatility Can be adapted to many practical situations.

Cost reduction In terms of labour work and prices because of the absence of props and less concrete needed, which results in lighter structure and less waste.

Example assembly of concrete on steel decking with metal mesh.

Resistance/Weight Ratio Greater resistance with less weight resulting in the reduction of the structure’s weight.

Reinforced Concrete on Steel Decking The beams are downstand or integrated within the slab depth for a shallow floor form of construction. The slabs are normally reinforced using an upper layer of mesh and, occasionally, additional bars in the troughs.

Disadvantages Repair Greater difficulty in repairing them compared to metallic structures.

Structure System: Load Bearing Wall System

Advantages The construction of the load-bearing wall structure is highly solid and durable.

Load-bearing wall structures possess high resistance of fire.

In the different colors and textures, the masonry units are available and to the user, provide freedom of creativity.

A load-bearing wall, (sometimes referred to as a 'bearing wall'), is a wall that supports vertical load in addition to its own weight and is an active structural element of a building. Load-bearing walls typically provide separation between the internal spaces of a building and transfer loads from other parts of the structure to the foundations.

Disadvantages During the action of earthquakes, load-bearing wall structure performs badly and most of the structures collapsed are load-bearing masonry buildings if looked through the history of past earthquake disasters.

Required more labor.

The construction of the load-bearing wall structure is slow.

For this type of construction, advance preparations or fabrication is not required.

These structures consume a large number of masonry units and there is a high weight of load-bearing wall structures.

For the masonry construction, tools and equipment are simple and cheap.

There are very poor thermal insulation properties of the load-bearing wall.
