Big Desert Ranch

The Story

The “Big Desert Ranch” is cumulatively carrying 1,400 mother cows, plus it’s bulls and replacement heifers. This offering presents the rare opportunity to own an essentially contiguous cow/calf operation that boasts abundant grazing permits with early turn out dates that extend through mid-December.

Most years the ranch takes advantage of it’s close proximity to neighbors corn stalks and grain stubble in the winter allowing most of the hay produced to be sold. Amongst other efficiencies, “The Big Desert” has proven to be a legitimate and profitable operation.

Another benefit but often overlooked is the Ranch’s proximity to vendor service’s. Most ranches of this scale are often located in a remote area that even minor breakdowns can stifle an operation by setting progress back for several days. Almost every agricultural vendor imaginable is within 30 minutes away.

The cattle go “out the gate” by April 1st, allowing the majority of the cows to calve “outside” but in pastures close enough to conveniently keep an eye on. The “early” pastures are easily accessible to branding corrals. Once calving is done, and everything is marked, the pairs start their migration throughout the five allotments and their various pastures.

Weaning usually takes place in October by utilizing strategically located corrals accessible to trucks. the cows are walked home to private pastures and neighboring corn stalk and grain fields to winter from mid-December until the end of March. Headquarters of the Headquarters of the ranch are located approximately 15 miles northeast of Rupert, Idaho off of highway 24.

The Big Desert Ranch spans across just under 58,000 acres. Starting at the well appointed head quarters, to the western edge of the Craters of the Moon National Park and reaching south to the Lake Walcott State Park, which opens up to the snake river.

The History

The Minidoka Village established in 1884 along the winding path of the Snake River was part of the route of the early pioneers heading west. A Shoshone word, Minidoka means “broad-expanse”, and ties in with the vision of the current owners’ vision of what the “Big Desert” has become.

The ranch has been put together by Karl Studer, the owner, over the past 10 years, by purchasing several separately owned holdings that complimented each other as contiguous unit. some of which are some of the oldest grazing allotments on the north side of the Snake River. (Schodde Allotment, which ran from Rupert to American Falls at one time.

It has been the owner’s goal and vision to create a ranch that was sizable enough to create efficiency by using the concept of “Economics of Scale”. The “Big Desert Ranch” is a result of that vision.
