Run for the Roses

he horses may have been racing in Kentucky, but supporters of JDRF channeled Churchill Downs on May 5, 2012 at the Run for the Roses Hope Gala presented by The Hershey Company. Horton Farms in Bentonville was decked out with more than 2,000 roses for this Kentucky Derby-themed fete, which kicked off with a VIP bourbon and chocolate tasting sponsored by Diageo and The Hershey Company. Horton Farms was full of energy as the 470 attendees sipped signature mint juleps and watched the exciting Derby live on the big screen. A unique cupcake raffle sponsored by Underwood’s Fine Jewelers raised $5,000, while guests perused the silent auction. Later in the evening, the live auction raised additional funds through big-ticket items such as a VIP trip to the I Heart Radio Music Festival in Las Vegas and a hunting trip to Ted Turner’s Vermejo Park Ranch in New Mexico. The crowd dined on a southern-inspired menu while JDRF supporter Hank Henderson, President and CEO of America’s Car-Mart, whose daughter has type 1 diabetes was honored for being a supporter of JDRF. Javier Blanco, Senior Director of Supply Chain Operations at Walmart and Board Member of JDRF, encouraged supporters to participate in the “auctioning off the cure,” which raised $50,000 to help find a cure for juvenile diabetes.
