FACES

WELCOME

EVERGREEN MEDIA

Welcome to the third issue of FACES of the Black Hills.

The response to last year’s edition was overwhelmingly positive, and we’ve heard from many across the region about how this magazine beautifully captures and celebrates the excellence that defines the Black Hills. It’s your feedback that inspires us to continue telling the remarkable stories of those who make this community exceptional.

FACES is unlike any other magazine in our region. In the world of publishing, what you’re reading is known as native advertising or sponsored content. This means we partner with local businesses and organizations to create stories that reflect their unique contributions to our community. While the featured businesses sponsor their content, we ensure that their stories are told authentically and with the same care and quality as any editorial piece. Each business or organization has chosen to share their story with you, helping to provide an inside look at how they are making an impact in the Black Hills.

We take great care in selecting those featured in FACES. Each business or organization represents an outstanding commitment to the community, and we are proud to showcase the best of the best.

To maintain this standard, we limit each category to one representative, ensuring that the stories you read in these pages reflect true excellence.

The Black Hills are full of incredible people, and in this 2025 edition, you’ll meet many who are working tirelessly to serve you and your families. Whether through innovation, community service or dedication to quality, these individuals and organizations are the heartbeat of our region.

Thank you for taking the time to discover the faces that help make the Black Hills an extraordinary place to live and work. We hope you enjoy reading this edition as much as we’ve enjoyed bringing it to life for you.

SECRETARY OF HOMELAND SECURITY

KRISTI NOEM

For Kristi Noem, words hold tremendous power. “The things that we say to each other matter,” she said. “We can either speak life into people, or our words can kill something in them.” This belief has shaped her life and leadership, and the former South Dakota governor has experienced this principle firsthand. In fact, she attributes much of her success to the impact of uplifting words that were spoken to her early in her life.

This life-long resident of South Dakota was born in Watertown and raised on her family’s ranch outside the city. Reflecting on the power of words, she wrote about her mother in the dedication of her book, “Not My First Rodeo”: “She spoke life into me and helped me understand how special I am to God. Her encouragement let me know I could do anything; her love told me I was already enough.”

These early moments of encouragement became a foundation upon which she would build a remarkable career in public service.

Kristi’s journey from ranch kid to national leader is a testament to this powerful form of encouragement. After serving in the South Dakota legislature, she became the state’s representative in

Congress and ultimately its governor. Each of these roles was made possible, in part, by the life-giving words of others who saw potential in her. But Krist’s story is only beginning.

In January of 2025, she was confirmed and later sworn in as the Secretary of Homeland Security. “When President Trump asked me,” Secretary Noem said, “I said yes because it is an opportunity for me to serve our nation — but also because it is an opportunity to make South Dakota safer.”

Secretary Noem’s life exemplifies the incredible impact of encouragement, resilience and the power of positive words. With a foundation built on love, faith and South Dakota grit, she is living proof that words can shape the future.

Her story challenges us all to consider the words we speak — to others and to ourselves — and how they can inspire greatness in those around us.

So, as you write the story of your life, take it from Secretary Kristi Noem: Speak life, because words have the power to create extraordinary stories in the lives of those around us.

MAYOR OF RAPID CITY

JASON SALAMUN

Since taking office in July 2023, Mayor Jason Salamun has expressed a deep sense of optimism for Rapid City’s future. Reflecting on his role, he quoted Plato: “A city is what it is because the citizens are who they are.” For Mayor Salamun, this underscores his belief that the strength of a city lies in its people, a perspective he has come to appreciate more with each passing day.

At the core of this strength, he believes, is the family unit — the foundation upon which a thriving community is built. “The health of a family equals the health of a community,” he said. “When families are strong, the community thrives, from public safety to overall wellbeing.” With this focus on families, Mayor Salamun is committed to guiding the city’s growth thoughtfully. “We want to be better before bigger,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of managing Rapid City’s growing population with care to ensure both current and future generations can flourish.

A key example of his forward-thinking approach is the longawaited Fire Station Number One project, which has been decades in the making. “This is the kind of long-term vision we need,” the mayor noted. “We’re laying the groundwork for a prosperous future, even if the results won’t be fully visible for years.”

Looking to the future, Mayor Salamun is particularly excited about 2025, a year he envisions as one full of action. “My word for 2025 is ‘bold,’” he stated. “I wasn’t elected to maintain the status quo; I was elected to make things better, to solve problems.” This forward momentum is driven by the belief that Rapid City’s best days are ahead — and he’s committed to leading it there.

At the heart of his leadership is a strong foundation of personal values. “I’m a Christian, a husband, a dad and a veteran,” he shared. These roles shape his approach to leadership, particularly in fostering transparency and building public trust. “It’s important for the community to know who I am and why I make the decisions I do,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to openness.

As Rapid City continues to grow, Mayor Salamun is clear about his vision: to build a community where families thrive, the next generation has ample opportunities and the city’s unique character is preserved. “We live in an amazing place, and I believe Rapid City represents the best of America,” he said. “That’s something I’m incredibly proud of, and I will continue to work every day to make it even better.”

For Mayor Salamun, leadership is a collective effort. “A leader is only as good as the team that’s with them,” he said, underscoring the value he places on his staff and leadership team. He strives to create an environment where they can excel, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation. Cabinet and other strategic meetings focus on overcoming challenges and finding solutions, ensuring a proactive and optimistic approach to governance.

“Rapid City is poised for greatness,” Mayor Salamun affirmed. His vision for the city includes a strong emphasis on families, economic opportunity and public safety. “We’re going to be very intentional about how we move forward,” he said, highlighting the importance of strategic planning and thoughtful execution to achieve these goals.

Through it all, Mayor Salamun remains committed to open communication and transparency, believing that trust and collaboration are key to building a more inclusive community. His frequent interactions with residents, willingness to listen to diverse perspectives, and dedication to finding common ground are central to his leadership style. As Rapid City evolves, Mayor Salamun is excited about the journey ahead, working every day to create a stronger, more vibrant city for everyone.

FIRST RESPONDERS

RAPID CITY FIRE AND POLICE DEPARTMENTS

As Rapid City continues to grow, two key figures in the community — Police Chief Don Hedrick and Fire Chief Jason Culberson — are leading the way in addressing the evolving challenges and opportunities of public safety, all while staying true to the heart of the city.

Both leaders consider recruiting and retaining top-tier personnel as integral to this task. “It starts with us leading the right way,” said Chief Hedrick. “We’ve made a concerted effort to recruit top talent, and we’ve been successful in bringing in excellent people.” Both chiefs have adopted modern, innovative recruitment strategies, reaching out to new pools of candidates and offering the support their teams need to thrive.

When it comes to their teams, both chiefs couldn’t be more proud of their people. “We have some of the best and brightest,” said Chief Culberson. “Our fire department includes individuals who are national leaders in their field — experts others look to for answers.”

Chief Hedrick shared similar sentiments and said, “I’d put our first responders up against anyone in the nation. We have an incredible team, top-of-the-line equipment, and, most importantly, the best community to live and work in.” He believes that the strength of the city’s public safety teams is directly tied to the deep-rooted sense of community that defines Rapid City. He also added that the strong camaraderie and mutual respect between the police and fire departments are key to maintaining this level of excellence. “The collaboration between our departments is second to none,” he said, “and when public safety is at risk, we come together as one.”

For both chiefs, their connection to the Black Hills goes beyond the scope of their work. It’s about being part of a community in one of the most beautiful and unique regions in the country. Chief Culberson reflected, “The Black Hills provide us with a special backdrop for everything we do.”

Chief Hedrick agreed, noting, “The people here are an essential part of how we do what we do. We see it daily in how the community comes together, especially in times of crisis. The people here genuinely care for each other, and that’s a part of what makes our work here incredibly rewarding.”

As Rapid City grows, it’s clear that the leadership of Don Hedrick and Jason Culberson is focused on maintaining the heart of the community. Their dedication to building strong, capable teams, supporting their staff, and embracing innovation ensures that public safety will continue to evolve alongside the city — all while preserving the values that make Rapid City such a beloved place to live.

RESPONSIBLE MINING

COEUR WHARF

If it’s not grown, it’s mined. That’s an important fact to keep in mind when thinking about a mine like Coeur Wharf in Lead. Environmental Manager, Jasmine McCauley, offered this thought exercise to demonstrate the point: “Think about your morning routine: your phone wakes you up, you walk on tiled floors, use metal fixtures in the bathroom, make coffee, and drive your car — all of this relies on mining.” From the technology in our pockets to the cars we drive, most of the things we depend on are made possible through mining.

Mining in the U.S. is different from many places in the world. Mines like Wharf are required to meet rigorous standards in both safety and environmental responsibility. “We usually go above and beyond those regulations,” said Ken Nelson, Regional General Manager. “We all live here in the Black Hills. We all love the Black Hills. We play in the Black Hills. We drink the water in the Hills and we eat a lot of things that are coming out of the Hills. It’s our playground and we want to keep it that way.”

Land reclamation is a visible sign of Coeur Wharf’s commitment to the Black Hills. “And we’re not looking at just five years or ten

years; we’re looking out at the 20 or 30 year mark and asking ourselves, what’s going to be needed here,” said Shelly Rose, HR and Community Relations Manager at Coeur Wharf. Shelly went on to point out that Coeur Wharf’s commitment to environmental excellence also looks to the past. “There are historical impacts on the environment that we’re working to clean up. We’re investing the funds into that even though it’s not something we created; it’s on our property, and we want to do the right thing.”

Doing the right thing — that’s the approach at Coeur Wharf. From environmental practices, safety standards and being an outstanding member of the community, the team at Coeur Wharf is passionate about the Black Hills — because they live here, too.

CHILDREN’S INPATIENT & PEDIATRICS

MONUMENT HEALTH

What does expanded children’s health care in the Black Hills really mean? Just ask Kyle Lemley, M.D.

As Monument Health’s Pediatric Intensivist, he knows better than anyone what world-class facilities and providers can mean for our local kids.

“We are now capable of keeping sicker kids here locally in Rapid City,” Dr. Lemley said. “So now, if you require specialized equipment or medicine or whatever you may need in the ICU, we can do that here locally and not have to transfer people out.” Monument Health specializes in caring for kids, from the usual bumps and bruises to complex challenges like diabetes and neurological issues.

Pediatricians and family medicine providers throughout Monument Health offer preventive care services such as well-child visits and immunizations, as well as care for a wide range of illnesses and chronic health conditions. With pediatric specialists across many departments, Monument Health can provide your child the support they need if specialized care is required.

That includes service in Spearfish, where two new physicians as well as two advanced practice providers work alongside Tara Ulmer, M.D.

Dr. Ulmer has been practicing general pediatrics in Spearfish since 2013 and is excited to expand the Spearfish team. “We always say in pediatrics that children are not young adults,” Dr. Ulmer said. “They are their own type of patient and they have their own issues that need attention and care. I’m excited about the services our growing team provides and the impact we make on local children and their families.”

STEAKHOUSE

DAKOTAH STEAKHOUSE

From its inception, Dakotah Steakhouse has always believed that dining should be a social occasion — a time when friends, family and coworkers can enjoy great conversation over a great meal. This steakhouse was acquired by WR Hospitality in 2022 and was a fantastic addition to this hospitality company’s portfolio. Dakotah Steakhouse prides itself in supporting local artisans and staying connected to the Black Hills community. At a time when the area is growing and expanding, Dakotah Steakhouse is striving to keep the flavor of the region alive.

Inspired by the history of the area, both the aesthetics of the building and the diversity of the menu are true to its local roots — something no nation-wide franchise can duplicate. “Everything that was selected to be in here works to portray the western South Dakota way of life — the place where the prairie meets the hills,” said Regional Manager, Nate Stiefvater. “We’re extremely thankful for Rapid City, for people bringing their family and friends here for special events and celebrating with us throughout the last decade and a half. It’s been a pleasure to serve the city.” General Manager, Kayla Myrick, pointed out that, “We’ve gotten

quite a few different awards for our steaks; all of our cooks and our prep people take great pride in serving the best, freshest food.”

Certainly, there are other steakhouses out there, but none like Dakotah Steakhouse. From the first design to the actual construction, this special restaurant has focused on creating a balance between upscale dining and a casual atmosphere — crafting a chic steakhouse where the kids are welcome too. The rest is easy — buy the very best meat possible and prepare it correctly.

PLUMBING

MAYER PLUMBING

Mayer Plumbing has been a cornerstone of the Custer community since its founding by the Mayer family in 1974. What began as a small, locally owned business has grown into a trusted name in the Black Hills region, renowned for professionalism, expertise and an unwavering commitment to customer service.

Now under the ownership of Philip and Shelley Bader, Mayer Plumbing continues to thrive. The Baders took over the business three years ago, ensuring the legacy of local ownership remained intact. Philip, with a background in plumbing, and Shelley, who shares his passion for maintaining a family-run business, found the opportunity through a mutual connection. “They wanted to keep it a small, family-owned local business, and we just feel so blessed that they chose us to take on their namesake and make it our own,” Shelley shared, reflecting on the seamless transition from the Mayer brothers.

One of Mayer Plumbing’s standout qualities is its extensive knowledge of the area. The team’s familiarity with Custer’s homes and infrastructure, some dating back to the 1970s, is a unique

advantage. “People are amazed when they call us, and I know exactly where to go because I’ve been in their home before,” Philip explained.

Beyond providing plumbing services, Mayer Plumbing is committed to community enrichment. “We get complimented on the fact that we’re hiring locally and training up our team,” Philip said. “They’re established people here in town who want more local jobs, and we’re giving them not just a job but a career and a skill.”

This dedication to fostering local talent, delivering exceptional service, and embracing new technologies, Mayer Plumbing continues to stand out as a vital part of the Custer community.

OPTOMETRIST

Dr. Antwan Randolph, owner of Eye Love Spearfish, opened his practice in 2021 with a vision: to provide both comprehensive eye care and expanded services — including vision therapy — to the Black Hills community. This dedication to excellence hasn’t gone unnoticed — in 2023, Eye Love Spearfish earned an honorable mention as one of America’s Finest Optical Retailers in an international competition.

Vision therapy, which Dr. Randolph likens to physical therapy for the eyes and brain, is a key service of his practice. Through customized exercises tailored to each individual’s needs, this therapy helps clients address issues like eye tracking, focusing and coordination.

“Helping clients develop vision skills they didn’t know they had is what drives me,” Dr. Randolph said. “I love that I can make a difference in how they see and interact with the world.” He also has a special interest in sports vision, recognizing the critical role that visual skills play in athletic performance.

Additionally, Dr. Randolph is one of the few providers in the country to offer Neurolens, a system that helps diagnose and treat conditions like migraines and neck stiffness caused by misalignment of the eyes. And of course, clients at Eye Love Spearfish can also rely on this clinic for more typical eye care services, like annual exams, glaucoma screenings and advanced ocular disease detection. Eye Love Spearfish also sets itself apart with a curated selection of independent eyewear brands, allowing patients to express their unique style with frames that aren’t commonly found in the area.

“Clients can expect a thorough, holistic exam, and a fun atmosphere,” Dr. Randolph said. “When you walk into Eye Love Spearfish, you’ll see the staff in scrubs and Jordans — we want clients to feel comfortable and at home during their visit.” With its innovative approach, advanced technologies and personalized care, Eye Love Spearfish is your standout choice for eye care in the Black Hills.

UNIFORM AND LINEN SUPPLY

SERVALL

Servall, a fifth-generation family business specializing in commercial linens, uniforms and more, has become a cornerstone of Rapid City, the Black Hills and beyond.

With a deep-rooted commitment to quality, service and community involvement, the company is led by Brad Dudley and his son Chase. Together, they embody the values of a familyowned business that places people — customers, employees and the community — at the heart of everything they do.

The company’s legacy began in 1916, when Brad’s greatgrandfather launched a laundry business that served local families in Norfolk, Nebraska. His son, Brad’s grandfather, was a World War II veteran who earned the respect of military leaders, including U.S. Army Chief of Staff, General George Marshall, for his outstanding laundry services.

After his service, he returned to civilian life and rejoined the family business, opening a second location in Rapid City in 1937, where he began offering uniform and linen rentals. Through five generations, the business has expanded and evolved, but exceptional service has always remained the defining characteristic of Servall’s identity.

At the core of Servall’s heart of service is its unwavering focus on meeting the unique needs of each of its customers. Offering a broad range of services, from industrial laundry and flameresistant garments to customized linens, floor mats, restroom supplies and much more, Servall tailors its solutions to each client’s specific needs. Whether serving a local restaurant or a large industrial client, the company ensures the highest quality and unparalleled service. “We want to take care of our customers for years, not just days,” said Brad, emphasizing the importance of nurturing long-term relationships over short-term gains.

Commitment to people — both inside and outside the walls

of the company — is also what distinguishes Servall. This philosophy extends to its employees, many of whom have been with the company for decades. “When our team feels valued, they go above and beyond,” said Chase, underscoring the importance of fostering a supportive culture.

Servall also actively values people through its ongoing support of local organizations. From the YMCA to Youth and Family Services to the Humane Society, and more, Servall believes in reinvesting in the communities it serves. “The places where we live and work are important to us,” Brad explained. “We want to see them thrive.” The Dudleys are also committed to stewarding the natural resources of the Black Hills community. This includes investing in green technologies and sustainability initiatives.

Looking toward the future, Chase is increasingly taking on a more prominent leadership role, and is focused on continuing the family tradition of exceptional service that has defined Servall for over 100 years. “I couldn’t imagine driving by one day and not seeing the Servall name on the front of the building,” Chase shared. “It’s more than just a business — it’s part of our identity, and we want to keep it going for future generations.”

With its deep-rooted commitment to quality, service and community, Servall is well-positioned to continue its legacy.

The Dudleys remain steadfast in their mission to make a positive, lasting impact on their customers, employees and the community, ensuring that the Servall name will be synonymous with trust and excellence for generations to come.

SPECIALITY RETAIL: SPORTING GOODS

SCHEELS

At Scheels in Rapid City, gratitude is at the core of everything they do. JC Joyce, the Store Leader, is deeply appreciative of the Black Hills community that has supported the store since its opening. “A healthy community is good for everyone,” JC said, emphasizing the store’s belief that community strength directly influences their success. The team is motivated not by recognition, but by a genuine desire to give back.

This commitment to community goes beyond just talk — it’s woven into the store’s culture. From volunteering with local nonprofits to supporting youth sports and participating in the United Way, Scheels encourages employees to actively engage in the Black Hills community.

Scheels is also a place of personal growth; JC learned this fact firsthand. She started with the company in Lincoln, Nebraska, as a part-time college student. “I never planned on staying,” she admitted. But the mentorship she received and sense of ownership she felt at Scheels changed her trajectory. This culture of ownership is central to Scheels' success.

Every full-time employee and anyone who has worked over 1,000 hours becomes an owner of the company. “We teach people to think like owners because, well, they are,” JC said. This unique ownership structure fosters a deep sense of accountability and pride, motivating employees to deliver an exceptional experience for every customer.

At its heart, Scheels is about empowering people — both its team and the community. By building a culture of service and ownership, Scheels is creating a lasting positive impact in the Black Hills, investing in the future for its employees and the community they call home.

SPA AND LEISURE

WATERTREE

There probably isn’t a single secret to success when it comes to running a small business. But when considering the success of a longstanding local business like WaterTree, the idea of strong roots come to mind.

For over 85 years, WaterTree has been a fixture of customer service and excellence in water and wellness in the Black Hills. Specializing in hot tubs, saunas and a complete offering of water treatment products which includes water softeners, reverse osmosis systems, water and salt delivery, and a wide range of problem water solutions, it is easy to recognize the company’s true line of business which is improving the health and wellness of its customers. This locally-owned company, now led by Becky and Kirk Jenkins and Aaron Nease, has a rich, multi-generational history, deeply rooted in service and a desire to make life better for its customers.

The story of WaterTree begins in 1939, originally opening its doors as a Culligan dealership. When Becky’s grandfather returned home from World War II he made a life-changing decision that would result in the family moving to the Black Hills. “My grandpa got back from World War II and worked for a Culligan dealership in Illinois,” Becky recounted. “He had the opportunity to either go to California to open a dealership, or come here to Rapid City and take this one over. He was born and raised in California, but didn’t want to raise his family there, so he came here instead. That’s how we got started.”

Becky’s grandfather’s decision to settle in Rapid City began a legacy that would span generations. In 1956, the water treatment company expanded its offering to include swimming pools, and by the late 1970s, hot tubs also became a key part of the business. This portion of the business is what the community knows as The Pool & Spa Center. In 2006, the company rebranded its water treatment and drinking water services to WaterTree. After nearly 20 years of both WaterTree and The Pool & Spa Center logos being on each building, the company is now in the process of rebranding its entire offering under the WaterTree brand — with a

logo lovingly designed by Becky and the biblically-inspired name chosen by Becky’s father.

The decision to rebrand was about more than just a fresh look — the colors, the logo, the name — all reflect the company’s evolving focus on wellness. “We wanted a name that reflected what we were doing and how people were starting to view the products we offer,” explained Kirk. “Hot tubs, saunas, drinking water and even water softeners — these aren’t just leisure products anymore. They are wellness products. People have started realizing that this is about taking care of yourself.”

Aaron agreed, “In the early years, people thought of products like hot tubs as fun in the sun, but over the past decade we have seen a significant shift in consumers recognizing the wellness benefits of the products we offer.”

While WaterTree is undoubtedly driven by its impressive selection of products and its commitment to wellness, it’s the company culture that truly sets it apart. When asked what makes WaterTree such a special place to work, Becky, Kirk and Aaron all emphasized the importance of their team. “We get so many compliments from people about their experience with our team. It’s not something we force, it’s just who we are,” Kirk shared. “We’re not perfect, but we always try to do right by people. That’s been a hallmark of this business from the beginning.”

And all three leaders described how WaterTree is a workplace where employees are able to grow and thrive; a place where employees are able to find not just a job, but a fulfilling career.

The roots of this business clearly run deep — growing out of a commitment to improving customer’s lives and a legacy that spans generations. WaterTree is poised to continue to enrich lives and create a supportive, positive environment for both customers and employees. It’s a place where legacy meets service — and where people come first.

An agreement between Chief Henry Standing Bear and Korczak Ziolkowski launched a Dream that is unlike anything ever seen.

In 1939, Chief Standing Bear asked Korczak to use his talents as a sculptor to send a message to the world: that the Indigenous people of North America are heroic and their culture, heritage and living tradition are worthy to be preserved and protected. These two men worked together to fulfill that Dream. The centerpiece of this message is a monumental Mountain Carving that Chief Standing Bear, along with other tribal leaders, determined would depict renowned Lakota warrior Crazy Horse. They chose this Lakota luminary as the subject of the Memorial because he represents the courageous and beautiful spirit of the North American Indian.

The Mountain Carving depicting Crazy Horse — the largest Carving in the world once complete — makes a bold statement on being a human. But the Dream isn’t just confined to the Mountain; as profound as the carving is, the Dream of Crazy Horse Memorial ®

Angel Lee is the Director of The Indian University of North America is Cheyenne River Lakota and joined the University team during the 2023 7TH GEN.® Summer Program. She is honored to lead the University team and contribute to both the mission of The Indian University of North America and the Dream of Crazy Horse Memorial

Angel explained how the Dream has grown for over 75 years: “When Chief Henry Standing Bear and Korczak Ziolkowski started, a part of the Dream was a humanitarian mission of protecting and preserving the culture, tradition and living heritage of North American Indians through the Indian Museum of North America centered around education and was to build a medical facility or something in the healthcare realm. Our new Wichozani program really does help fulfill that part of the original mission of having a program in Indigenous health and wellness.”

The Wichozani program is a partnership between Black Hills State University and The Indian University of North America®. This 12 credit program will focus on Indigenous health and wellness education courses and will promote cultural sensitivity, enhance understanding of traditional healing practices, and address the unique health challenges faced by Indigenous communities. Graduates may find opportunities in healthcare, public health, community organizations and government agencies focused on improving Indigenous health outcomes.

For Angel, it’s witnessing the success of the students and graduates of The Indian University of North America® that truly motivates her. “Being able to hear the stories of not only past cohorts but also the current cohorts on how the program has really impacted them is inspirational. Some of our students are getting their PhDs, and they’ve contacted us to let us know that they attribute some of their success to their time with the University.”

Angel and her team at The Indian University of North American ® are proud of the past and are excited for the future. The Dream of Crazy Horse Memorial ® is a profound story of culture, art, education and humanitarianism. And this ongoing story is one that is changing the lives of a growing number of people in countless ways.

FINANCIAL ADVISORS

EDWARD JONES

We’re Matt and Greg Ketel, a father-son team at Edward Jones, and we’re passionate about helping people in our community reach their financial goals.

I (Greg) found my true calling as a financial advisor after a career in production management. After earning my MBA and joining Edward Jones in 2014, I’ve had the privilege of helping clients navigate the world of investing. The work ethic I developed living in the Black Hills and growing up around family businesses has been invaluable in my role today.

Matt, my son, joined Edward Jones in 2022 after earning his degree in mining engineering from South Dakota School of Mines in 2013. His years working in Arizona’s copper mines has given him a practical, results-driven approach that serves him well as a financial advisor.

Matt and I are especially proud of our recent achievements: I earned my CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® certification this year and Matt is a candidate for CFP® certification and will achieve full certification in 2025. According to our region leader, we became the first father-son duo in Edward Jones history to pass the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® exam on the same day.

We’re also blessed to be supported by Jamie Dubbelde, our Senior Branch Office Administrator, who has been with us since 2016. Jamie’s dedication to exceptional service and her ability to manage the day-to-day operations of our office ensures that we can focus on what matters most — our clients.

When we’re not serving our clients, we love spending time outdoors in the Black Hills with our families. Matt enjoys boating, fishing and cooking on his smoker, and I’m always up for a run or a hike through the Hills.

At Edward Jones, we focus on building relationships and understanding each client’s unique needs. If you’re ready to take the next step in your financial journey, we’d love to sit down and talk about how we can help.

MONUMENT HEALTH

Many people struggle to lose weight and keep it off. If your weight is starting to affect your health and your way of life, and you’ve tried other weight loss methods without success, it may be time to consider weightloss or bariatric surgery.

The Monument Health Weight Management team understands that losing weight is difficult. With an experienced team of medical, surgical, neuropsychological and nutrition professionals, this group is here to help you achieve your goals with education and guidance every step of the way.

“We’re really proud of our new clinic in Rapid City which is a truly multidisciplinary clinic with not only surgery, but also dedicated registered dieticians, an obesity medicine physician, an obesity psychiatrist, and integration into our Orthopedic facility with physical therapy and dedicated trainers,”

David Fromm, M.D., General Surgeon at Monument Health in Rapid City, said. “We take our patients through the entire journey. Bariatric surgery really becomes a lifechanging event.”

The Monument Health Weight Management team works with you individually to develop a program specifically tailored for you — with lifestyle changes as well as medical and surgical options.

“It’s a process beforehand where the team evaluates numerous factors,” said Andrew VanOsdol, M.D., General Surgeon at Monument Health in Spearfish. “We’ll identify problems with things like acid reflux or hernias, look for anything that needs to be taken care of before the surgery or to determine what kind of surgery, if any, is best in each case. Patients see a dietician and talk about medication before surgery.”

SPORTS MEDICINE

MONUMENT HEALTH

It’s no stretch to say that the Black Hills community is an active one. The endless outdoor exercise options as well as passionate fan bases for numerous sporting activities means there is no shortage of teams, games and tournaments throughout the Hills. Where you’ll find the most exciting sports action, you’ll likely find Monument Health Orthopedics and Sports Medicine caregivers, providing expert medical assistance to the region’s athletes.

“Our primary mission with sports medicine is to be an excellent, comprehensive provider in our community,” said Shawn Mechling, lead athletic trainer with Monument Health Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. “Sports is such a big part of the local culture here, and it’s very gratifying to be able to play the role we do for local athletes.”

The presence of caregivers in schools during games, practices and training is a service that Monument Health provides at no charge to its partner school districts and universities. Caregivers on the Sports Medicine Team are responsible for establishing and maintaining the performance programs for the athletes of these schools. Trainers establish programs with three major goals in mind: improving athletic performance, reducing athletic injuries and teaching lifelong fitness and movement skills.

“We provide services to 10 area high schools and 3 area universities. We cover large scale rodeos like the Black Hills Roundup, Days of ’76 Rodeo, and Rodeo Rapid City,” said Mechling. “One of the best things about living and working in the Black Hills is being part of such a sports-centric community, and serving these area athletes while watching them perform and develop.”

The life of an athlete has its uncertainties — wins and losses, injury and recovery. In the Black Hills area, athletes can always count on the caregivers of the Monument Health Sports Medicine Team. Whether that means working with athletes during training to reduce the possibility of injury, on the sidelines during a game or recovery post-injury, Monument Health Sports Medicine is a constant in the lives of athletes in the Black Hills.

DAY SPA & CRYOTHERAPY

THE BODY SPA & CRYOTHERAPY

Stepping through the doors of The Body Spa & Cryotherapy, you are immediately embraced by a sense of calm and compassion. This is more than a spa — it’s a sanctuary where individuals find relief, healing and hope. Every member of this team shares a singular purpose: to address the interconnected needs of mental and physical pain through innovative therapies and heartfelt support.

For founder Tara Mechaley, this mission is deeply personal. As a suicide survivor, her journey of resilience became the foundation for creating a space where others could find solace and renewal. “Healing isn’t just about relieving pain,” Tara explained. “It’s about restoring balance and helping people feel seen and supported.”

The Body Spa began in 2012 as a vision to transform wellness in the Black Hills. In 2018, Tara introduced Whole Body Cryotherapy to western South Dakota, making it the first spa in the region to offer this therapy. Today, as the longest-running cryo spa in South Dakota, the Body Spa has become a leader in advanced pain management and recovery therapies.

At The Body Spa & Cryotherapy, every service is thoughtfully designed to nurture the whole person. From massage therapy to relieve

pain and tension, to Whole Body and Targeted Cryo, infrared sauna, and red light therapies that promote deep recovery, each treatment is tailored to individual needs. The skin care services available here can also rejuvenate and restore confidence.

The dedication of Tara and her team has earned The Body Spa accolades, including Best Day Spa and Best Massage Therapist(s) in Best of the Black Hills. These honors reflect not just excellence in services but a heart-centered mission: ensuring every client feels valued and cared for.

Tara and her team extend their impact far beyond the spa’s walls. Through volunteer initiatives and outreach programs, they proudly support veterans, first responders, individuals in need, and local organizations. “When we help one person heal, that healing touches their families, friends and the community as a whole,” Tara said.

The Body Spa & Cryotherapy is more than a wellness destination — it’s where physical pain meets emotional healing.

ELDER LAW AND ESTATE PLANNING

Jennifer Tomac’s original plan was to become a teacher. Growing up in Rapid City, she had always envisioned herself in the classroom. “Since the age of 8, I planned to go into teaching,” she said. But everything changed during her sophomore year of college. An attorney from Spearfish came to speak to her psychology class, and after listening to him for just 45 minutes, Jennifer had an epiphany: her calling is in law. “I realized I was on the wrong path,” she recalled. “I’m supposed to be a lawyer.”

From that moment, Jennifer set her sights on this new vision for her life. After completing her undergraduate studies, she headed to Virginia to attend law school. At the same time, her future husband, Jerad Tomac, also from Rapid City, was stationed on the East coast while serving in the Army. The two reconnected, and their shared journey led them to marry. Jerad, too, graduated from law school, and Jennifer began working in Virginia’s probate system. It was there that her passion for law — specifically in the area of elder law and estate planning — grew even stronger.

“I fell in love with this area of law because it’s so family-oriented,” Jennifer said. “When most people think of family law, they think of divorce and child custody. But estate planning is just as much about family.” As Jennifer worked in the probate system, she gained a deeper understanding of how estate planning intersects with families’ lives, often in profound ways. “It’s not just about what happens to your assets when you pass away, it’s also about your values and how your family’s well-being is protected. It’s about who will take care of you if you get dementia, and making sure the right paperwork is in place to ensure your wishes are honored.”

When Jennifer and Jerad decided to return to Rapid City to practice elder law and estate planning, they quickly realized that their mission to help people prepare for the future wouldn’t be as straightforward as they had anticipated. The independent spirit that defines western South Dakota is a double-edged sword. While it’s a point of pride for the region — especially when it comes to things like car repairs or home improvement — the same DIY attitude can be problematic when it comes to estate planning.

To explain this, the Tomacs often use a relatable analogy: fixing a toilet. “If you fix your own toilet, you’ll know immediately whether it works when you flush it,” Jerad explained. “But if you take a DIY approach to estate planning, you won’t know if it’s right until it’s too late — by definition, you’ll be gone when it’s supposed to take effect.”

The Tomacs are driven by a strong moral conviction: to help people plan for the future before it’s too late. They refuse to sit idly by while families suffer the consequences of poorly executed estate plans or the lack of a will altogether.

To help them accomplish this goal, instead of immediately adding an attorney or a paralegal to the team, the Tomacs hired an expert in communications and brand voice – Brad Gardner. Brad helped take a complicated subject matter and present it in a way that is easy for everyone to understand.

Hosting free community workshops has proven to be one of the most crucial pieces to the public education puzzle. Jennifer added, “During the workshops, we cover basics like powers of attorney and wills. We also discuss revocable and irrevocable trusts, as well as strategies for nursing home planning.” The firm’s focus on education has allowed Jennifer to circle back to her love of teaching. She’s found that although her title is “attorney,” in addition to practicing law, she gets to spend a large portion of her time teaching.

Over the past five years the firm has grown to include an additional attorney, Lillian Gaither, two paralegals, and several team members, each of whom is equally dedicated to serving the Black Hills in this indispensable way. Through hard work, passion and a commitment to serving the people of their hometown, the Tomacs have not only established themselves as trusted advocates for estate planning in the Black Hills, but have also become a source of education and support for families who want to make sure their legacies are properly planned and protected.

PAIN MANAGEMENT

MONUMENT HEALTH

People all around us deal with chronic pain, suffering through their daily life with symptoms from bothersome to acute and emergent. Chronic pain is one of the most costly and pervasive health problems in the U.S., with patients affected by difficulties like lower back pain, arthritis pain, headaches and any number of disorders that affect the nervous system.

A commitment to helping people manage their suffering is why Monument Health has expanded Pain Management services. Up to seven percent of people live with chronic pain conditions, Michael Huot, M.D., Director of Pain Medicine, said. Offering the best treatment to these people in the Black Hills area and beyond is the mission behind Monument Health’s Pain Management team.

“These patients live in pain and it is a terrible disease to have. Every day we help patients get their life back,” Dr. Huot said. “Expanding services is allowing us to meet our communities’ needs and better serve our outlying areas.”

The Monument Health Pain Management team works with patients to create a plan, monitor progress and develop the skills for long term success. This team creates an integrated, individualized

plan for every patient. Monument Health employs a comprehensive approach that combines medication management and interventional therapy to help patients regain a higher level of function.

RESTORATION AND PRESERVATION

DIGITAL DOWNSIZING

Stephanie Csornok, owner of Digital Downsizing, is in the business of preserving history — transforming aging, analog media into digital formats that last forever. Whether it’s old photos, slides, 8 or 16 millimeter film, vinyl records or even 8-tracks, Stephanie handles it all with a professional approach and an unwavering commitment to quality.

“I take in pretty much every form of analog media,” said Stephanie, sharing her wide range of services. Stephanie’s meticulous attention to detail and professional expertise allow her to deliver exceptional results even in challenging situations. “I never give up on a project,” she said. “Even when the media is in poor condition, I always do my best to recover it. I’ll always give it the old ‘college try’ — I’m not one to quit easily.”

She’s also passionate about sounding the alarm of how urgent it is to preserve these memories before it’s too late. “Everything analog has an expiration date,” she explained. “VHS tapes degrade by 10 to 20 percent every decade, while slides and photos are susceptible to microbial damage over time. Even 8 millimeter film can develop what’s called vinegar syndrome, where the acetate breaks down and

starts to rot.” Stephanie urges people in the Black Hills to digitize their memories sooner rather than later. “The clock is ticking, and the sooner people get their media digitized, the better.”

For Stephanie, Digital Downsizing is more than just a service — it’s a way to help people safeguard irreplaceable memories. With her dedication and technical know-how, she ensures that every project is handled with the utmost care and professionalism. Whether it’s a box of old photos or a stack of deteriorating tapes, Stephanie is your trusted expert for making sure these memories are preserved for future generations.

FLORIST

FLOWERS BY LEROY

From weddings to birthdays, anniversaries and even times of loss, Flowers by LeRoy’s floral designs have been a source of beauty and sentiment in Rapid City for over 56 years. Today, Paula Wimp, the shop’s owner, continues that tradition of excellence, honoring the legacy of the previous owners while shaping the business’s future.

Paula’s story begins in Louisiana where she was raised by her grandmother, a woman who instilled a powerful work ethic in her. “My grandmother was everything to me,” Paula shared. “She raised seven daughters on her own after losing her husband. She taught me that hard work and dedication are key to overcoming challenges.” Although her family couldn’t usually afford flowers, Paula developed a deep admiration for them. “Flowers were a luxury item, something I only saw from a distance. But they always seemed so special to me,” Paula recalled. This early fascination would later fuel her desire to become a florist.

After completing classes and licensing in floristry, Paula moved to Rapid City in 2000 and started working at Flowers by LeRoy. She was immediately impressed by the immaculate presentation and the high standards of service at this shop. Over the years, Paula learned every facet of the business. In 2022, after years of hard work and dedication, she and her husband made the decision to carry on the shop’s legacy by purchasing this Rapid City establishment. “I’m incredibly proud to be the owner of Flowers by LeRoy,” Paula said. “This shop has been a part of the community for so long, and I’m honored to continue that tradition.”

Paula credits much of the shop’s continued success to her talented and dedicated team. “I’m so lucky to work alongside such a wonderful group of people. Everyone here is passionate about what we do, and that’s what makes this place special,” she said. “We spend so much time together and we’re super close-knit. Everyone is so compassionate, supportive and loving with each other; we’re all just like family. I couldn’t be more proud of these individuals working alongside me, representing Flowers by LeRoy.”

As Paula looks toward the future of Flowers by LeRoy, she is focused on maintaining the shop’s legacy while continuing to innovate. “I’m always looking for ways to improve, to stay up to date with trends in the floral industry, to pursue continuing education and to keep providing the best service we can,” she said. “But at the end of the day, it’s about the people we serve and the relationships we build with our customers.”

For Paula, owning Flowers by LeRoy is a dream come true — a chance to carry on a rich legacy while creating new memories for generations to come. “I’m incredibly proud of what this business represents, and I’m excited for the future,” she said. “It’s about being part of the moments that matter in people’s lives. That’s what makes this job so meaningful,” she said.

Paula’s journey from a young girl admiring flowers from afar to becoming the owner of a well-loved community flower shop is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion and the beautiful messages that only flowers can communicate.

Their mission is simple yet powerful: to connect people with possibilities. Beyond simply funding agencies, United Way works to create opportunities that empower individuals and families to thrive.

VISITOR SERVICES

RAPID CITY VISITOR CENTER AND DOWNTOWN AMBASSADORS

Laurie Sutterer, Visitor Services Manager at Visit Rapid City, is passionate about sharing the beauty and history of Rapid City with visitors. Laurie has lived in Rapid City for over 40 years, and her love for the area shines through whenever she talks about what she calls her dream job: welcoming visitors to her hometown.

The new Visitor Center, which opened in May of 2024, is a particular point of pride for Laurie. This downtown destination was designed to offer more than just information — it’s a place to showcase the things that make Rapid City a one-of-a-kind destination. “We wanted to create a space that offers something special that visitors can’t find elsewhere,” Laurie explained. The Center features a range of local merchandise that highlights the area’s charm. It’s also a hub for travel resources, where visitors can access indispensable materials such as itinerary inspiration, maps, guides and more. “We never assume what people want to see, so we always ask them about their bucket list,” Laurie said. This approach helps visitors experience a trip that is tailor-made just for them. Since its opening, the new Visitor Center has already welcomed

over 20,000 visitors. The center has become a vital resource, with guests often returning to express gratitude for the assistance. Sutterer added, “It’s incredibly rewarding to know that we’ve helped people make the most of their time here.”

The Downtown Ambassador program is another key part of this effort to create a welcoming environment for tourists. Ambassadors greet and engage with visitors in Downtown Rapid City, providing personalized recommendations and guidance. They also help visitors explore must-see experiences, including the City of Presidents walking tour, which features sculptures of past U.S. presidents. For visitors and residents alike, these programs exemplify Rapid City’s commitment to making each visitor’s journey a memorable one.

GUIDED TOURS

CITY VIEW TROLLEY

When it comes to exploring Rapid City, there's no better way to take in the sights and sounds than hopping aboard one of the iconic City View Trolleys. Whether you’re a local or a visitor from across the country or even the globe, the trolley provides an engaging, fun way to learn about the city’s rich history and hidden gems.

Dale Ulrich, one of the drivers, said, “I just love meeting people from all over the country and sharing stories about Rapid City. It’s amazing to show them things they might not see otherwise, like the Chapel in the Hills or the osprey nests at Canyon Lake Park.” His enthusiasm for connecting with tourists is contagious, making every trolley ride feel like a tour from a friend.

John Backlund, another driver, shares the appeal of interacting with fellow residents of the Black Hills. “You get a surprising number of locals who take the tour, often out of curiosity or to show visiting friends around,” he said. ”It’s fun to share little details, like how Elvis Presley played one of his last concerts at the Monument in 1972, that they might not know about.”

Steve Silverman, who has met trolley passengers from places as far-flung as Kuwait and Australia, echoed this joyfulness found on the City View Trolleys: “You meet people from all over. It's amazing how connected we all are. And everyone loves the Chapel in the Hills. It’s always a highlight of the tour.”

As the slogan goes, “Life is jolly when you ride the trolley.” The trolley isn’t just transportation — it's an experience, with knowledgeable drivers acting as ambassadors to Rapid City’s history, culture and stunning sights. For anyone visiting, or even locals looking to witness Rapid City from a new point of view, the City View Trolley is a can't-miss experience.

THE VILLAGE AT SKYLINE PINES SENIOR LIVING

At the Village at Skyline Pines, the care and well-being of residents is at the heart of every decision. This is more than a philosophy — it’s how this team operates every day, with a deep commitment to people, both staff and residents.

A vivid example from the last year of this leadership approach is how quickly the team moved to open their new memory care facility to accommodate a family in urgent need. “We had a family sitting with Kelli, crying because they couldn’t care for their loved one at home anymore, and they didn’t know what to do,” recalled Cory Back, General Manager. Kelli Back, the Village’s Administrator, turned to Cory and said, “I need those rooms. Whatever it takes, I need them.” The board of directors had given the team six months to renovate and open this new facility for residents, but the team came together and cut that timeline down to less than 30 days — this family in need was the driving force behind the monumental effort.

“That’s what we do here,” Cory said. “When we see a need, we do whatever we can to meet that need.” This determination to create solutions reflects the Village’s unwavering focus on the residents. “It wasn’t about the money or timeline; it was about getting this gentleman the care he needed,” Cory said. “We don’t have barriers when it comes to doing what’s right for our residents.”

While Kelli and Cory have built a reputation for leading with compassion, they also prioritize internal growth within their staff. Megan Geistfeld, the facility’s Assistant Administrator, has been with the team for several years, and under Kelli’s mentorship, she’s developed into a strong leader. Now, Megan will be transitioning into the Administrator role, and Kelli will move into a higher position, focusing more on strategic leadership while remaining actively involved. “Megan’s ready. She’s confident, and we’re excited for her to step into this new role,” Kelli said.

Megan, now a certified administrator in South Dakota, echoed this commitment to service. “When people asked me what would change when I take over, I always reassure them: We’ll keep doing what we’ve been doing — putting residents first,” she said. This continuity brings comfort to both staff and families, who trust the Village at Skyline Pines to provide exceptional care.

Cory and Kelli are advocates for this style of staff development. “We try to bring people up, identify potential and give them the tools to succeed,” explained Kelli. Megan’s transition into the administrator role is a direct result of this philosophy. “When you give people the opportunity to learn and grow, you not only create future leaders but also inspire those at every level of the organization to see what’s possible.”

The approach is not just about leadership — it’s also about how the team works together. The staff at Skyline Pines is encouraged to understand the full scope of the operation, from caregiving to business management. Cory described how the team operates as a family, with each person supporting the others. “We’re all in this together. Whether you’re in marketing or caregiving, everyone should understand how their role fits into the bigger picture,” he said.

And Cory is clear about what this mission entails: “We don’t want to be the biggest; we just want to provide the best care possible. If that means expanding, then we’ll do it, but it’s always about doing what’s right for the residents.” With the addition of Megan’s leadership, the “people-first” philosophy that Kelli and Cory have built over the years will continue to guide the Village at Skyline Pines, ensuring that residents and families can rely on a consistent, compassionate environment.

In December 2024, Kicks and Giggles celebrated its eighth anniversary, and owner Lisa DenHerder expressed deep gratitude for the incredible support from the community. What started as a dream to bring baby and children’s products to Rapid City has grown into a cherished store, shaped by four of the most important people in her life—her grandchildren. “When choosing products, I always think about whether my grandchildren would enjoy and use them,” Lisa shares. “They’re my inspiration.”

Lisa’s journey began in 2015, sparked by the joy of becoming a grandmother for the first time. AUDIOLOGY

PAMELA FEEHAN, AUD, CCC-A

Dr. Pamela Feehan has dedicated her audiology career to improving the lives of individuals affected by hearing loss. She has seen firsthand how hearing loss, if left untreated, can contribute to a range of serious health challenges, including cognitive decline.

Hearing is essential not only for communication, but for maintaining mental well-being and cognitive function. Dr. Feehan is passionate about educating families on the vital role of hearing in preventing dementia. “The brain processes everything we hear in our language center,” she explained. “When hearing loss impacts that process, the brain can begin to decline and lose abilities. But with the right treatment, we can help slow the decline.” Furthermore, hearing loss can exacerbate depression. “When you can’t hear, you withdraw from conversations,” Dr. Feehan went on, “and that isolation and the depression it causes can also contribute to earlier occurrences of dementia.”

In her practice, Dr. Feehan works with patients who have varying degrees of hearing loss, from those with age-related hearing decline to individuals who have been exposed to loud environments in

their careers and lives. By fitting hearing aids and offering tailored guidance, she helps patients reconnect with their families, enhancing their overall quality of life. And according to Dr. Feehan, many patients may be surprised at how advanced hearing aids have become. “Some of the aids that we have today are just tremendously better than when I first got in the field,” she said.

For Dr. Feehan, the most rewarding part of her job is seeing the profound impact better hearing can have on life. As she puts it, “When you improve someone’s hearing, you improve their life. It’s foundational.” For Dr. Feehan, the long-term impact of better hearing is the greatest reward — helping people hear better, live better and understand better.

SWEETS & TREATS

CHUBBY CHIPMUNK

For 20 years, Chubby Chipmunk has been delighting the Black Hills with decadent truffles that have become a symbol of celebration, indulgence and chocolate perfection. From birthdays to weddings, anniversaries and beyond, these masterfully hand-dipped truffles — made with the finest chocolate, butter and, of course, love — have earned a special place in the hearts of chocolate lovers far and wide.

The story of Chubby Chipmunk began in 2004, when Chip Tautkus created her signature truffles for a local event. What started as a small operation quickly blossomed into a beloved local business. “Eventually, we bought the old service station in Deadwood and turned it into the shop we have today,” Seth Tautkus, Chip’s son, recalled.

Now, two decades later, Seth and his wife Carolie own and run the family business, carrying on the legacy that Chip started. “We’re proud of our family and we’re excited for the future,” said Carolie. “Our daughters help out in the shop, and it’s been amazing to pass on this work ethic to them.”

Over the years, this chocolate shop has earned national acclaim.

From supplying truffles for the swag bags at the Oscars to creating bespoke chocolates for celebrities like Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, Chubby Chipmunk has made its mark in the world of indulgence.

Despite these glittering milestones, Seth and Carolie remain deeply connected to their roots. “We’ll never compromise on quality,” Seth emphasized. Whether it’s their signature truffles or newer offerings like caramel and toffee creations, each bite is a rich, meltin-your-mouth experience.

Looking to the future, the Tautkuses are excited to expand their offerings and enhance the customer experience. They plan to improve their Deadwood storefront and create an inviting outdoor space for visitors to savor their creations. As Chubby Chipmunk celebrates its 20th year, Seth and Carolie are more determined than ever to keep building on their legacy, one indulgent truffle at a time.

SPECIALTY BOUTIQUE: CONSIGNMENT

WEAR IT AGAIN, SAM

At Wear it Again, Sam, shopping isn’t just about finding great deals; it’s about discovering unique treasures, saving money and contributing to a sustainable future.

Tara Morgan, the store’s owner, shared her thoughts on why customers keep coming back to this beloved consignment shop in Rapid City.

One of the biggest reasons people love shopping resale, according to Tara, is access to a wide range of high-quality, often rare brands that aren't available anywhere else in the region. “You can find designer labels and high-end items at a fraction of the retail price here,” Tara said. “Some of these brands might be out of reach at full price, otherwise."

Every visit is different, making shopping at Wear it Again, Sam an exciting experience. “We put out new items every day, so it’s never the same story twice,” Tara explained. Many customers visit multiple times a week, knowing that fresh merchandise is always available. The store’s ever-changing inventory means there’s always something new to discover — and with many items being one-of-a-kind, shoppers know they won’t see the same outfit on anyone else in town.

Beyond the thrill of finding rare gems, there’s a growing awareness of the positive environmental impact of shopping resale. Tara pointed out that buying resale reduces the need for new clothing production, helping to limit waste and conserve resources. “It’s good for the environment,” she said. “Choosing resale means giving new life to items that still have a lot of life left in them.”

With great savings, eco-friendly benefits and a supportive, friendly atmosphere, it’s easy to see why shoppers love Wear it Again, Sam. Whether you’re on the hunt for designer pieces or are ready to do some environmental good while enjoying the perks of consignment, this resale shop has something special for everyone.

BAKERY

NOTHING BUNDT CAKES

In Rapid City’s Rushmore Crossing, a sweet new addition to the local food scene is making its mark: Nothing Bundt Cakes.

Owned by Darcy Zandstra, along with her brother and sister-in-law, the bakery has quickly become a go-to destination for cake lovers. But the story of how this beloved bakery found its home in the Black Hills is a tale of patience, community and a passion for spreading joy.

Darcy's journey into the cake business is anything but conventional. With a background in marketing, she used her talents at the Rapid City Rush, and later worked alongside her husband in his construction business. After years in the corporate world, she found herself yearning for something new. During a trip to Sioux Falls, she shared a casual thought with her sister-in-law about the lack of a Nothing Bundt Cakes in Rapid City. “I was just comparing Sioux Falls and Rapid City,” Darcy recalled, “and I said something like, ‘We don't even have a Nothing Bundt Cakes!’”

That seemingly simple comment sparked an idea. After some research, the family reached out to Nothing Bundt Cakes, only to receive an initial “no” from the franchise. However, a few months later, they received a call informing them that Rapid City was indeed a viable market. After an extensive interview process, Darcy and her family were given the green light to move forward. The planning process took time — there were lease negotiations, construction delays and countless challenges — but in January 2024, Nothing Bundt Cakes opened its doors at Rushmore Crossing.

For Darcy, the appeal of the brand was more than just the delicious cakes. “I think what drew me to it was their commitment to community,” she explained. “They really encourage you to be a part of the community, to get involved in events, participate in donations and fundraisers — it's all about uplifting those around you.” The values of service and genuine connection are at the heart of the brand, and Darcy has made sure to carry those values into her own store.

The bakery offers a variety of signature cakes, gluten-free options and seasonal flavors. The most popular items are the personal-sized

Bundlets. The favorite of Darcy and her family are the Bundtinis — a dozen individual-sized cakes, perfect for a treat or a gift. “You think you don’t need a dozen, but trust me, you do!” Darcy explained. “They’re addictive!” Crowd favorite flavors include white chocolate raspberry and red velvet. For those looking for a unique flavor twist that matches the calendar, seasonal flavors like Andes Peppermint chocolate chip or pumpkin spice are sure to delight.

But Nothing Bundt Cakes isn't just about the cakes. It's an experience. The “Bundt’ique” — the very fitting name for the bakery’s storefront — features everything from balloons to cake toppers and celebration supplies. Customers can place custom orders over the phone, online, with the handy app or swing by to pick up one of the many readyto-go options. Darcy and her team of “Joy Creators” make it a point to ensure that every visit is an experience that brings happiness.

The community response has been overwhelming, with customers celebrating everything from birthdays to weddings with their cakes. In fact, weddings have become especially big for the bakery, with Darcy being particularly excited about the opportunity to be part of such an important day. “We offer free consultations and tastings, and we handle deliveries for weddings, too,” she said.

In addition to the cakes, Darcy is passionate about giving back. She encourages local organizations to use the bakery for fundraising efforts, offering a range of options to help groups raise money. “It’s important to give back to the community that’s supporting you,” she said.

For Darcy, it’s about more than sweet treats. “It's all about spreading joy," she said, smiling. “Whether we're giving back to the community, offering great customer service, or simply making someone's day a little sweeter, that's what it’s all about.”

BREWING

MT. RUSHMORE BREWING COMPANY

When talented individuals are given the freedom to follow their passions, extraordinary things happen.

This is exactly what has unfolded at Mt. Rushmore Brewing Company, where owner Janet Boyer has empowered her all-star team to create unique beer, food and experiences that captivate guests at her Custer brewery and restaurant. “Janet has been incredibly supportive of my ideas,” said Head Brewer Tom Robbins. “She’s great at allowing us to pursue our passions, and that extends to the kitchen staff too.”

Working alongside fellow Head Brewer John Climenti, Tom and the brewery team craft beers using traditional European brewing methods. These time-honored techniques require patience and precision, but the result is always worth the effort. “What keeps me motivated,“ Tom explained, “is the fact that brewing is both an art and a science. It’s an aesthetic experience, but achieving that consistently requires a deep understanding of chemistry and physics. Coming from a research background, I love the challenge of balancing creativity with technical precision.”

At Mt. Rushmore Brewing, it’s clear that both beer and food

are crafted with care, expertise and an open-minded approach. Janet’s leadership has allowed her team to experiment and push boundaries, whether in the brewery or the kitchen. “But Janet has done an incredible job of keeping everything running smoothly and impressively. She’s allowed all of us to thrive and express ourselves,” Tom reflected.

The result is a one-of-a-kind experience that combines flavor, creativity and passion — exactly what happens when talented people are given the space to shine.

PRIMA SCHOOL OF DANCING

Ninety years — that’s how long Prima School of Dancing has been nurturing generations of dancers, not only in technique but in life. Founded by Genevieve Silver in 1935, the studio flourished later under her daughter, Terri, and, since 2003, has continued to grow under Christy Remington’s leadership.

Christy’s connection to Prima is personal. “She was three and a half when her mom asked if she could start dancing,” Terri recalled. “I didn’t usually take kids that young, but I made an exception for her.” Christy quickly caught Terri’s eye for her work ethic, kindness and beauty as a ballerina. “She was also always so kind and generous,” Terri said fondly.

When it was time for Terri to retire, she knew Christy was ready to carry on the studio’s legacy. “I had no doubt Christy would take it forward,” Terri said. “I just wanted her to do even better than I had.”

“Terri’s always been there for me, whether it’s been talking about a recital theme, or business or just the reality of what it’s like on your body to teach all night,” Christy said. “It’s just been such a blessing to me to have such a close mentor and friend.”

Terri added that Christy’s husband, Ryan, has been vital to the studio’s success, too. “Christy is very fortunate to have this really strong guy. Her husband is amazing. You should see him behind the scenes. He’s encouraged her. He’s helped her. It’s a wonderful partnership. And I can’t say it enough.”

Together, Terri and Christy have made Prima a rare place where countless lives have been touched. As Prima looks ahead to its next 90 years, one thing is certain: the legacy of dance, friendship and dedication will continue to inspire future generations of dancers, just as it has for nearly a century.

CHURCH

CROSSROADS WESLEYAN CHURCH

Pastor Sonny and Missy Rosbrugh’s journey into ministry is a testament to the often surprising places God can take us. What began as a series of reluctant steps has grown into a powerful story of transformation and faith.

“I didn’t feel equipped when God called us,” Sonny admitted. “But when God calls you, He equips you, too.” After becoming more and more involved in their church in Missouri, one of Sonny’s mentors and friends asked him to take a leap: move his family to Rapid City to minister full time.

The Rosbrughs were hesitant, but a life-changing mission trip to Africa offered clarity. There, Sonny and Missy felt God leading them to serve in ways they never could have imagined. This pivotal moment set the stage for Sonny’s eventual role as a youth pastor and, today, as the lead pastor of Crossroads Wesleyan Church in Rapid City.

Sonny and his family have embraced the call, trusting that God will guide them every step of the way. “There’s never been a dull moment in it,” Sonny reflected. “But through every blessing and challenge, we see God’s hand in it all.”

Missy shared a powerful message for the Back Hills community: “There’s a place for you here. A place where you can be loved, not judged; a place to find hope in a Savior.”

The Rosbrughs have intentionally worked to create a welcoming environment for everyone at Crossroads — regardless of age, stage in life or even experience with God. As Sonny emphasized, “You don’t have to straighten yourself out before coming to Jesus. We all get to walk this journey together.”

For the Rosbrughs, faith is a journey of obedience, community and a deep trust in God. Their message is simple yet profound: there is always a place to belong, and God will equip you as you walk alongside Him.

PEDIATRIC CARE

BLACK HILLS PEDIATRICS, LLP

Since its opening in 1983, Black Hills Pediatrics has grown into the largest pediatric practice in western South Dakota. Today, its staff has a combined 160-plus years of experience providing exceptional, compassionate care. With a sole-focus on children’s health, the clinic stands out for its family-centered approach and its pioneering role in offering pediatric-specific urgent care seven days a week. Black Hills Pediatrics earned a reputation for specialized care, becoming the first clinic in the region to provide pediatric urgent care back in 1985.

Black Hills Pediatrics offers pediatric urgent care from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends, ensuring families have access to care when they need it most. During these hours, patients can either call the office to make an appointment or walk-in for care.

What truly sets the clinic apart is its complete and total dedication to pediatrics. As clinic manager Dean Hass explains, “Everyone here, from the front desk to the doctors, specializes in pediatrics. It’s not just part of our job; it’s our entire focus.” The providers are highly trained, having completed extensive pediatric residency programs focused solely on children’s health. This specialized expertise underpins their commitment to delivering the best care possible.

But this laser-focused specialization wouldn’t mean much without the clinic’s passionate providers. Dr. David Mueller, for example, can trace his inspiration for offering excellence in pediatric care to his mother. “My mom was always very passionate about helping kids,” he said. “She was very influential in helping me find my passion. It’s about helping kids, and that’s what I love to do.”

Dr. Cara Hamilton is driven by her understanding of the developmental challenges children face. “Kids often don’t grasp the long-term consequences of their actions. I love helping them navigate those years,” she explained.

Dr. John Paul is excited at the prospect of intervening early when needed. “Identifying and addressing chronic conditions early can have a profound, lasting impact on a child’s health,” he said.

Dr. Maggie Kuehler values the long-term relationships she builds with her patients, saying, “Watching them grow, from newborns to teenagers, and being a part of their journey is incredibly rewarding. Whether it’s helping them through toddlerhood or guiding them through adolescence, it’s such a privilege.”

The clinic’s child-friendly environment plays a key role in its approach to care. Each exam room is uniquely themed—whether it’s Star Wars or space exploration — to make visits fun for young patients. Dr. Greg Anderson shared, “We want kids to feel comfortable and even excited about coming to the doctor. It’s about making the experience enjoyable for both the child and their parents.”

Equally important is the clinic’s commitment to supporting entire families. Dr. Kuehler emphasized, “Helping parents navigate the challenges of toddlerhood or adolescence is a big part of our role. It’s about offering support to the whole family, not just the patient.”

As an independent, physician-owned practice, Black Hills Pediatrics is free from corporate influence, allowing the team to focus solely on what’s best for their patients. Dr. Anderson explained, “Being privately owned means we can make decisions based on what’s best for our patients, without the influence of large healthcare corporations. That autonomy ensures we continue to provide the highest-quality, personalized care.”

Through its skilled team, dedication to patient care and family-focused approach, Black Hills Pediatrics is a trusted partner in supporting the health and well-being of children throughout western South Dakota.

MEXICAN CUISINE

PUERTO VALLARTA MEXICAN RESTAURANT

Oscar and Jessica Vega’s journey is a story of tradition, resilience and family — values that are at the heart of their Rapid City restaurant, Puerto Vallarta. The roots of their success can be traced back to the bravery of Oscar’s grandparents, who opened the first Puerto Vallarta in Puyallup, Washington, after immigrating from Mexico in 1977. Their entrepreneurial spirit laid the foundation for a restaurant group that now spans multiple states.

In 2019, Oscar and Jessica took a leap and opened a Puerto Vallarta of their own in Rapid City. Amid the challenges of the pandemic, they fought to keep their doors open, fueled by their shared determination and passion. Today, their restaurant is thriving, a testament to their unwavering commitment. Oscar, now the third generation to carry the family legacy, reflected on how the toughest years shaped them. “Those challenges taught us resilience and perseverance,” he noted.

The Vegas first met while growing up, both immersed in the restaurant business. Jessica’s father was a key figure in the Puerto Vallarta kitchen, and he still plays a crucial role at their Rapid City

location, preserving the recipes passed down through generations. Puerto Vallarta’s commitment to quality has earned it recognition, including being voted Best of the Black Hills. At Puerto Vallarta, the food is more than just a meal — it’s a link to the past, with each dish carrying a piece of their family’s history. The recipes, passed down through Oscar’s grandparents, are a testament to the authenticity that has always been the backbone of the restaurant. Signature dishes, paired with the largest selection of tequila in the region, have become pillars of their success. Beyond the phenomenal food, the most rewarding part of owning the restaurant for Jessica is the sense of community it fosters. “There’s nothing more fulfilling than bringing people together over a great meal,” she said. Through it all, Oscar and Jessica remain committed to honoring their roots while building something meaningful that will carry their legacy forward for generations to come.

CO-OP GROCER

BREADROOT NATURAL FOOD CO-OP

Co-ops exist for the community,” shared Sharissa Stevens, General Manager at Breadroot Natural Food Co-op. With this founding principle in mind, Breadroot is on a mission to leave the community healthier and more connected through every interaction — not just at checkout.

In 2024, Breadroot partnered with Showered with Hope, a mobile shower project that provides a clean start for guests twice a month in their parking lot. Services include a fresh shower, a hygiene bag, clean undergarments, and haircuts when available, along with breakfast provided by Breadroot. Sharissa described the program as “nothing short of empowering”.

Breadroot patrons also have opportunities to support local nonprofits through donation vouchers and drives held throughout the year. Additionally, shoppers who bring reusable shopping bags can choose to either take five cents off per item or let Breadroot donate that same amount to community causes on their behalf.

As part of their mission, Breadroot is working to educate people about co-ops. This education is shared through events like Connect with Your Co-op, where community members can meet local

makers featured at Breadroot. “We’re prioritizing local,” Sharissa emphasized.

When asked about her favorite part of working at Breadroot, Sharissa said, “It’s so rewarding to know that the work we’re doing is contributing to something bigger. We’re helping people access healthy, affordable food while strengthening our local economy.”

For long-time members — who invest a small amount each year in membership dues — it’s clear that the variety of everyday and specialty items at Breadroot is unmatched. Members truly own their grocery store, and the team’s efforts are always with them in mind. This includes an ongoing search for a larger space to expand product offerings as well as educational and community events.

Stop by Breadroot and give it a try — you might just find your new favorite place to shop.

SIDING, WINDOWS, GUTTERS AND ROOFING

SUPERIOR SIDING INC.

At Superior Siding, the goal is simple: build lifelong relationships with every customer.

Proudly serving Rapid City and the surrounding areas, Superior has become the go-to name in siding, roofing, windows and gutters. Founded by Chad Roth, the company has grown from a small operation into a regional leader. For 26 years, their commitment to exceptional service and expert craftsmanship has driven their success.

Chad’s journey began at 17 when he joined a siding crew as a day laborer. After years of honing his skills with various companies, Chad started taking on side projects to stay local and spend more time with family. Encouraged by a mentor, Chad later formalized the business, and Superior Siding was born. Today, Chad’s son Brady, along with key team members like NaCole Bezpaletz and Jessica McKenna, continue to ensure that standard of excellence.

For Brady, creating an outstanding experience for every customer is the most rewarding part of working at Superior. “A lot of people have had bad experiences with contractors,” he said. “We’re striving to change that.”

Superior Siding’s reputation speaks for itself. With over 500 five-star reviews, customers appreciate the company’s dedication to quality. NaCole summed it up: “Our goal is to create customers for life. We’re here to take care of people and build relationships that last.”

Jessica added: “We always tell our guys to do the work in a way that they’d be happy to buy the house in 20 years.”

Superior Siding’s commitment to quality is also reflected in their use of the best materials. As a leader in James Hardie fiber cement siding, they offer products known for durability and exceptional warranties. Chad explained, “James Hardie siding comes with a 30-year warranty on both labor and materials. It’s like buying a car and not worrying about the oil or tires for 30 years.”

While siding remains a core service, Superior Siding also excels in windows and roofing. They partner with trusted brands like Simonton Windows for energy-efficient, durable products. Whether it’s a single window or a full replacement, every installation adds beauty and value. Roofing is another area where they shine. They use premium roofing products from CertainTeed, ensuring lasting performance.

Unlike many of their competitors, Superior is made up of an in-house crew, never subcontractors. “We’re picky about who we hire to ensure the highest quality on every project,” said Chad. “Our employees are part of the Superior family, and they care about the work they do.”

Superior Siding also maintains a deep commitment to community service. The company actively participates in efforts to improve the quality of life for local residents through event sponsorships, resource donations and volunteerism. Their dedication to community service transcends just business interests; Superior is truly invested in being a good neighbor in the Black Hills.

As Superior Siding looks ahead, Chad and his team remain focused on one goal: upholding a legacy of quality, service and satisfaction. From roofs to windows to siding makeovers, they’re ready to transform your home. Visit them off Canyon Lake or inside Uptown Rapid (formerly known as the Rushmore Mall) — your perfect exterior is just a call or a stop away.

GASTROENTEROLOGY

MONUMENT HEALTH

Monument Health Gastroenterology provides the highest level of care for a full range of digestive system diseases including general gastroenterology, hepatology and interventional gastroenterology.

The GI team at Monument Health serves patients from their state-of-the-art Endoscopy Suite, completed in 2024, at Rapid City Hospital.

The number of digestive disease conditions leading to primary care physician visits and specialty referrals is progressively on the rise and Monument Health’s GI clinic works to fill this need in the community. Developing inpatient and outpatient services has included the use of cutting edge technology such as endoscopic ultrasound, which allows for treating patients in new ways.

This means patients who used to be referred for major surgeries, often with a high rate of complications, can now be taken as an out-patient procedure where the patient is often sent home the same day.

“Patient safety and care is number one,” Ali Zakaria, M.D., Director of Endoscopy and Gastroenterology, said. “If you really

strive to do no harm, take care of your patients and you put their satisfaction and their medical needs number one, then you will be successful. That is my philosophy, and our entire team puts our knowledge and skills to work for the best outcomes for our patients and truly make an impact on our communities.”

LAWN CARE AND LANDSCAPING

ASPEN RIDGE LAWN & LANDSCAPE

Lincoln Anderson, owner and CEO of Aspen Ridge Lawn & Landscape, brings over a decade of experience in landscape design, construction and property maintenance to Rapid City and the Black Hills. After moving to the area in 2006, Lincoln transitioned from working as a landscape architect to founding his own company in 2010. His goal was simple: provide exceptional service and creative designs while building long-lasting relationships with clients.

One of the standout features of Aspen Ridge is its comprehensive approach to landscaping. Unlike many companies that require homeowners to coordinate with multiple subcontractors, Aspen Ridge handles every aspect of a project from start to finish. “We pride ourselves on being a one-stop shop,” Lincoln explained. “From landscape design to construction, we can do it all. If it’s something that we don’t specialize in — like electricity or plumbing — we can get the right people involved and can handle that coordination; our goal is to make things easier for homeowners so they don’t have to juggle different contractors.”

In addition to its landscape services, Aspen Ridge has a thriving and beautiful nursery, The Plant Shop at Aspen Ridge, which has

become a local favorite. “We offer more than just plants,” said Lincoln. “We provide planting services, irrigation solutions and ongoing property care. Our team is always happy to consult with customers to help them select the right trees, shrubs and other plants for their property.”

With a focus on excellent customer service and a wide range of services, Aspen Ridge Lawn & Landscape ensures that each project is managed efficiently and with care, allowing homeowners to enjoy their outdoor spaces without the stress of coordinating multiple vendors. INSURANCE

GENE HUFFORD – AMERICAN FAMILY INSURANCE

The insurance industry has faced significant challenges in recent years, with unpredictable weather patterns and rising costs. Despite these hurdles, Gene Hufford, a longtime agent with American Family Insurance in Rapid City, remains optimistic. With over 35 years of experience, Gene has seen firsthand how the industry has evolved, and while he acknowledges the difficulties, he’s deeply grateful for his loyal team and the opportunity to give back to the community.

The insurance industry, once a relatively predictable business, has become more volatile due to the increasing frequency and intensity of storms. The situation has made the business more complex for agents. Policies that once provided broad coverage are now more specialized and intricate, requiring a careful balance between customer needs and the realities of the market. “Insurance companies are changing their policies. They’re not going to be as broad as they were just a few years ago,” Gene explained.

His staff’s dedication is especially important to him given the turbulent environment. In fact, Gene’s team plays a crucial role in keeping clients informed about the constant changes in rates and coverage. “We do reviews and keep customers up-to-date through calls and mailings,” he shared. “We want to make sure they understand what’s going on with their policies.” His agency’s customer-centric approach has been instrumental in navigating the complexities of the modern insurance landscape.

Beyond the nuances of running an insurance agency, Gene is also passionate about supporting his community, particularly when it comes to music. Music has been an integral part of his life for decades, and he has made it a priority to contribute to the vibrant music scene in Rapid City. “I’ve been part of the blues and jazz community for most of my career,” Gene noted. “I sponsor a lot of the music events that come through town.”

Despite the challenges that come with navigating a shifting insurance landscape, Gene’s outlook remains positive. His belief in the value of his team, the importance of customer education and his commitment to community engagement help him remain optimistic. Gene and his team are dedicated to making the necessary adjustments to stay competitive and offer excellent service.

As the industry continues to evolve, Gene and his team’s approach remains grounded in the same principles that have guided them for decades: a focus on customer service, a commitment to teamwork, and a passion for supporting the local community. While the road ahead may be uncertain, Gene’s optimism and dedication provide a beacon of stability in an ever-changing world.

HOSPITALITY

ELEVATION INN & SUITES

Tim Johnson, the owner of Rushmore Destinations, has recently transformed one of his beloved Rapid City properties, the Howard Johnson, into one of the most exciting hotels in the region. Now called Elevation Inn & Suites, this hotel has undergone a significant rebranding, transitioning into a unique, soft-branded property under the Wyndham “Trademark Collection.”

“This is about creating lasting memories for families visiting South Dakota,” Tim said, explaining the decision to rebrand. The name “Elevation” reflects both the hotel’s physical location — nestled in a hillside near downtown Rapid City — and its commitment to elevate the guest experience.

The changes at Elevation Inn & Suites extend beyond just a fresh name. The hotel boasts modern upgrades like luxury bedding, all new furniture, Samsung-powered smart TVs and cutting-edge tech features. “We’re aiming to stay ahead of the curve by integrating A.I. and offering a more personalized experience,” Tim explained.

The focus on local culture is another key aspect of the transformation. During peak season the hotel will regularly host artisan demonstrations,

such as Native American hoop dancing, quilt-making, beadworking and crafts giving guests a deeper connection to the region.

“We want our guests to leave with more than just a good night’s sleep,” Tim said. “We want them to feel connected to the Black Hills.”

As for Tim, his passion for hospitality stems from a desire to help people create memories. This vision extends beyond Elevation Inn & Suites to his broader portfolio, which includes other properties like the Deadwood Gulch Resort and Ramada Sioux Falls Water Park & Convention Center. For Tim, the secret to success is the people who believe in him — from mentors to his dedicated staff. “If our team is happy, it shows in the service we provide,” he said.

Tim is dedicated to helping South Dakota become a top 10 U.S. destination. With a focus on excellence, hospitality, and honoring local culture, Elevation Inn & Suites is playing a pivotal role in the state’s growing tourism scene.

HOME HOSPICE

MONUMENT HEALTH

Each of us has the desire for comfort, care and support. When someone we love has a terminal illness, these desires become critical needs. When this happens, what we want most for our loved one is compassionate support and care that allows them to live their last days with dignity and without pain.

Hospice is not a place, it is a philosophy of care providing medical, emotional and spiritual care for patients experiencing illness in a life-limiting manner. Monument Health Home Hospice services provide this care for patients in the comfort of their own home.

“What is so great about home health and hospice is that it gives the opportunity for the patient to be where they are comfortable and feel safe,” Lucas Kretschmar, RN, said. “So it can be a big relief for people who want to remain at home when they learn we can offer in-home care and services. Also, care in the home can help limit the stress put on the hospital system.”

Hospice caregivers are committed to making a lasting difference in the lives of patients by enabling them and their loved ones to live each day as fully and as comfortably as possible. The hospice team

is attentive to the medical, emotional and social needs of patients, their families and friends.

“It’s a different type of nursing, but it’s so rewarding,” Chelsea Harr, RN, said. “We’re present at such a personal time in the patient’s and family’s lives, and we strive to be of service to them with our presence, knowledge and care.”

Monument Health also provides hospice care at the Hospice House in Rapid City. Since opening in 2007, the Hospice House has offered home-like amenities, care and comfort for patients and their families.

TELEVISION

NEWSCENTER1

Jim Beck, the new General Manager of KNBN NewsCenter1, brings a wealth of experience to the station. Originally from Michigan, Jim spent 16 years in accounting before transitioning into television in 1998. His career journey includes leadership roles in Casper and Cheyenne, ultimately leading him to his new position in the Black Hills.

Jim’s arrival at NewsCenter1 coincides with a new chapter for the station under Forum Communications, a company traditionally known for its strong presence in local newspapers across the Midwest. Forum’s recent acquisition of NewsCenter1 signals their commitment to investing in quality local journalism. “Forum is not afraid to spend money to improve the product,” Jim said, noting plans to move into a new studio in 2025.

For Jim, local journalism is vital to community life. In a time when national news is often saturated with opinion and unreliable sources, local stations like NewsCenter1 provide unbiased, community-focused reporting that keeps people informed about issues that directly affect their lives — like city council and school board meetings. “We’re the ones out there covering what people care about,” Jim said.

Forum Communications shares this vision, emphasizing the importance of local news in strengthening communities. As Jim observed, “When local news goes away, there’s a real void.” He is particularly excited about the future of NewsCenter1 in the Black Hills, where he sees great potential for growth both in the station’s capabilities and its impact on the local community.

With a dedicated team, strong community ties and a focus on the future, Jim is enthusiastic about what lies ahead for KNBN and its viewers. “We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us,” he said, with a commitment to continuing the station’s legacy of excellence in local journalism.
