MASTER PLAN OBJECTIVE

MASTER PLAN PRODUCT

The Science Museum of Virginia makes its home in Richmond’s historic Broad Street Station, a timeless monument to innovation. Once the railroad was a powerful symbol of technological advancement, as well as the overall progress of the human race. Today, a place that once functioned as a hub for moving people from one geographic location to another serves as the state’s flagship institution for informal science learning.

This Master Plan was undertaken concurrently with a parallel process documented under VOLUME I: Science Musuem of Virginia Intangible Qualitites (or I.Q.). The findings of the I.Q. Study, and specifically information gleaned from an I.Q. Charrette (or design seminar) directly influenced the recommendations and findings of the Plan; therefore, the two volumes should be reviewed together.

The overall objectives of the Campus Master Plan are to preserve and enhance the property’s inherent value, and strengthen the Museum’s overall image and mission.

This Plan begins with site diagrams that were developed to express existing and proposed conditions of the site. They are primarily focused on physical features such as hydrology and site geometries. Those diagrams and the information gleaned from the I.Q. Study and staff input were used to develop a zone diagram for the site.

Built between 1917 and 1919, Broad Street Station operated continuously as a major train station until 1975. One year later, we moved into the station and began the process of transforming an architecturally dramatic and attractive space into a place that could function as a museum. Founded in 1972, the Science Museum of Virginia officially opened its doors in 1977 to become one of the state’s most highly visible, accessible, and popular destinations for families, school and community groups, and out-of-town visitors. Each year, the Museum attracts more than 300,000 visitors, hosts more than 500 community events and 75 guest speakers, and partners with the K-12 educational system, inspiring more than 60,000 students to become engaged in the fun and excitement of science. We also train hundreds of teachers on a wide variety of topics.

Today, when visitors come to the Museum they are immersed in interactive exhibits, the most technologically advanced dome theater in the world and dynamic live science demonstrations. And even though the Museum is a handson, experience-oriented educational environment, it also stewards several iconic artifacts, including RF&P’s historic executive Car ONE and an 80-ton Aluminaut submarine designed and built by Reynolds Metals Company in 1964. Our collection also features a visitor favorite, a moon rock from the Apollo XVII mission.

The end product of the IQ process was the creation of a pattern book of design elements unique to the property.

Included are a Historical Chronology of Site Development, a bubble chart of the Museum’s IQ Characteristics, and three primary Conceptual Themes that form the basis of the Museum’s “story.” Based on these studies, design Palettes were developed to help visualize the conceptual themes, which were translated into form and design elements.

Design Palettes are included for landscape design, materials, plants, patterns, furnishings, and graphic design. Finally, IQ Dashboards, which synthesize the design palettes according to venue, reveal an overall and consistent conceptual design image for the Science Museum of Virginia.

Using the information from the I.Q. Study and working closely with Science Museum staff, 3north developed program ideas and objectives for the site and translated them into a Campus Master Plan.

The primary goal is to create, through thoughtful design, a cohesive master plan for the campus that reflects the identity and brand of the Science Museum of Virginia and incorporates the findings of the I.Q. Process.

There were three themes identified in the I.Q. Process: The Wonder of Imagination, The Power of Place, and The Genius of Sustainability. From those themes several major program ideas were identified for the Campus Master Plan. Elements and features reflecting the following ideas can be found throughout the Campus Master Plan: •

Create large scale civic spaces that are inclusive of the surrounding community

•

Incorporate and experiment with cutting edge technology for hardscape elements and site furnishings

•

Use sustainable methods and materials to showcase stormwater management techniques and rainwater harvesting

•

Incorporate opportunities for research into all areas of the campus

•

Use principles of permaculture to create food production opportunities throughout the landscape

•

Ensure that the site is fully accessible to visitors beyond ADA requirements

The zones or ‘neighborhoods’ represent distinct landscape areas with specific uses and landscape character. The zones were then further developed to create an illustrative Campus Master Plan.

This document then presents the illustrative Campus Master Plan and breaks it back down into neighborhoods. Each neighborhood has its own page with imagery and text that explain its key design features.

MUSEUM GREEN The Museum Green is the Science Museum’s grand public lawn. It is a civic gathering place, providing a much needed large urban green space for the surrounding neighborhoods.

Sustainable features are located throughout the Museum Green, from bioretention to natural light wells connecting to the subterranean parking. A large central lawn provides a dynamic multiuse space for gathering, events, playing, and unplanned pickup activities.

Smaller garden rooms along the edges provide more intimate gathering spaces beneath the shade of the double allees of trees. Sunken sculptural seating areas double as bioretention basins in storm events. These provide artistic and visible examples of stormwater management along the Broad Street corridor.

Art and sculpture also have a central role within the Museum Green. A formal Sculpture Walk follows the allee along Broad Street, with opportunities for exhibits or sculptures that are tied into the mission and vision of the Science Museum.

Opportunities for a civic scale sculpture installation exist at the intersection of Broad Street and DMV Drive—such a sculpture could become a defining element of the Museum Green and a landmark within the city.

PLAYGROUND WITH UNIQUE AND ARTFUL FEATURES

GARDEN ROOMS TO SHOWCASE STORMWATER TECHNIQUES

A restaurant anchors the western end of the Green. The restaurant rises from the ground plane with a green roof, opening towards the open lawn. Café seating allows for outdoor dining adjacent to the restaurant. The restaurant is itself a destination, incorporating scientific culinary elements (such as molecular gastronomy) with a farm to table approach, using food grown on the Museum campus.

A playground is located adjacent to the Museum Green, providing the surrounding community with a place for young children to play.

The City’s proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route will include a stop in front of the Science Museum. There is an opportunity to influence the design of the bus shelter to tie in with the Museum’s branding. A bicycle borrow program can be implemented on the campus as well as other modes of transportation such as Segways and a tram system that run around the Elevated Walkway.

THE DEPOT The Depot interprets the rich history of Broad Street Station and of the collection of rolling stock owned by the Science Museum of Virginia.

The railroad has long been associated with scientific and mechanical advancement—these topics can be interpreted within the Depot. Both historic and contemporary rail innovation can be explored. This area also serves as a covered open event space.

A new permanent roof system bridges the openings between the historic train sheds, replacing the existing canvas tent system. The rolling stock will continue to be used for special events, education, and parties.

Handcar tracks along the outer line provide exciting “racing” opportunities, as well as opportunities to learn about speed and mechanics that tie into the features of the adjacent Science Playground.

SCIENCE PLAYGROUND The Science Playground is the center of active science learning on the Science Museum campus.

Interactive outdoor exhibits make learning an active and fun process.

The spaces flow organically into one another, allowing visitors to easily move throughout the site from exhibit to exhibit. Small gathering and classroom spaces allow groups to congregate within the Playground. These spaces can also be used for small educational or social events.

The Science Playground could contain a multitude of different interactive exhibits and experiences, from small to large scale. More active elements such as a climbing wall provide physically challenging activities for visitors, while more passive learning opportunities such as plant and bird identification exist within the Treehouse Zone.

The Treehouse gives access to the canopies of mature oaks, where visitors can explore a forest ecosystem from a new perspective. The landscape of the Science Playground contains many layers of native plants that serve as both buffers between activity stations and as opportunities for interpretation.

A miniature golf course is proposed near the Science Playground (behind the Terrace Park) as a separate experience. Currently themed as ‘Einstein Golf’ and located at the base of the Time Tower, this course would have holes that explore various theories of math and physics that could be designed and interpreted in many different ways.

TERRACE PARK AT THE DEWEY GOTTWALD CENTER The Terrace Park flows outward from the new Dewey Gottwald Center, providing additional outdoor space for events as well as an inviting green space that is viewed from inside the building.

The amphitheater lawn terraces and hardscape terrace respond to the modern design of the new Dewey Gottwald Center with clean lines and simple materials. Stormwater runnels artfully convey stormwater from the building and amphitheater, taking the water downward towards bioretention basins in the Hydrozone.

The amphitheater is sized to host larger formal events or smaller casual gatherings and is designed to provide a unique angled view of the historic train sheds.

A simple landscape palette of lawn and native grasses contribute to the modern aesthetic. Larger canopy trees are planted in the terraces to provide shade and frame views.

HYDROZONE & WATERSHED The Hydrozone is a man-made system of wetlands and ponds that provides stormwater management and demonstrates best practices for the Science Museum campus.

Visitors can learn of the importance of wetlands and their role in treating water and providing habitat. Boardwalks and paths take visitors through a series of different wetland systems. Topics such as post-industrial phytoremediation, sustainable stormwater management, habitat creation, and ecology can be demonstrated and explored within this area.

The Hydrozone also functions as a treatment and storage system for stormwater from a large portion of the Science Museum campus and a research facility.

The Hydrozone is a dynamic area, changing with the seasons and with the amount of precipitation. Different wetland and meadow plants are found throughout the different wetland systems. The Hydro Tower is located within the Hydrozone.

This tower, which could take many forms or shapes, connects the boardwalk to the Elevated Walkway that passes overhead.

‘FALLS OF THE JAMES’ FOUNTAIN FEATURE AT THE END OF THE WATERSHED

The Watershed is a specific area within the Hydrozone that interprets the James River watershed through its physiographic regions, including the Ridge and Valley, Blue Ridge, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain.

AREAS FOR CHILDREN TO INTERACT WITH THE WATER

Water flows through these regions, passing through the “Falls of the James in Richmond” and into the Coastal Plain.

The water flows into the “Atlantic,” where the Aluminaut is located. The Watershed is located between the historic train sheds.

Elements could respond to real-time or visitor-manipulated river data, adding a dynamic element to the Watershed. This could show the James River in normal, flood, or draught conditions. Interaction with the water is encouraged within the Watershed.

The Hydrozone is a man-made system of wetlands and ponds that provides stormwater management and demonstrates best practices for the Science Museum campus.

The Watershed is a specific area within the Hydrozone that interprets the James River watershed through its physiographic regions, including the Ridge and Valley, Blue Ridge, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain.

THE SCIENCE GARDEN The Science Garden explores the science of sustainable agriculture. Gardens move from formal to informal as they step down the hill towards the Hydrozone.

Larger, more formal plantings are located at the top, while naturalized permaculture gardens and forage areas are located towards the bottom. Both provide hands-on educational opportunities for visitors and students.

Bog plantings are located at the bottom of the terraces within the former rail corridor. Orchards demonstrate organic best management practices. Elevated garden beds provide the surrounding community with places where they can be active in growing their own food.

Hands-on educational opportunities abound throughout the Science Garden on topics ranging from soil science to food preparation to permaculture. Covered class space, storage, and restroom facilities are located within the Science Garden.

PARKING SOLUTIONS Two subterranean parking decks provide 400 parking spaces for the Museum.

This solution removes the existing surface parking lots, allowing public green space to take their place. This showcases sustainable parking design by allowing green space to replace asphalt and by capturing and conveying stormwater from the parking deck green roof to bioswales and bioretention areas. Skylights convey light to the underground parking decks.

ELEVATED WALKWAY The elevated walkway cuts throughout the entire Science Museum of Virginia campus, connecting the newly envisioned landscape zones around the Museum.

Taking cues from the Museum’s history as the Broad Street Rail Station, the walkway speaks to the site’s rail heritage through form and materiality.

The site’s varying topography along with the potential for a future high speed rail line makes pedestrian accessibility around its campus particularly challenging. The elevated walkway provides an ADA accessible route throughout the site.

The walkway becomes an iconic element of the museum, connecting the landmark towers and treehouses that are found throughout the grounds. The opportunity to walk above the ground provides views across the entire Science Museum site and beyond to the Redskins training facility and the surrounding neighborhoods.
