Did you know that when the JLNVB was admitted by the Junior League parent association, it had 10 charter members, was the 75th League formed in the United States, and the first in Virginia? The first fundraiser project was a Cabaret and it netted $1,536.

he Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. celebrated its 85th birthday this year! It is with great pride that we can say we are an organization of diverse women creating positive change in the lives of women and children in South Hampton Roads for 85 years. The JLNVB began with Mrs. Lawrence F. Tucker and the first community project of providing transportation to city agencies. The Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. has since provided thousands of service hours towards improving our communities, granted hundreds of thousands of dollars to needy charities across the region, and has developed hundreds of civic leaders who, in turn, continue to impact our area through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

We continue to implement new projects, forge new community partnerships, strengthen our recruiting efforts, increase member satisfaction, and develop new education campaigns to let others know what we do to remain a growing and viable presence in our community.

Healthy Kids

Three-Year Project, Lifetime Commitment Helping Kids Walk Away from Fast Food There’s a lot of talk about childhood obesity. And no one seriously doubts the link between fat-filled fast food grabbed at take-out restaurants and weight problems. But how do you begin to break the cycle that locks kids – particularly disadvantaged children in urban areas – into a fast food diet for life? We believe education has to begin at home – but schools and communities also play a critical role.

Childhood nutrition has been an important focus for Junior Leagues for decades, going back to the pioneering work done by the Junior League of Brooklyn, who recognized the importance of proper nutrition to learning, in successfully petitioning the New York City Board of Education to provide free lunches in schools in the early 20th Century, which became the model for the National School Lunch Program. Since then Junior Leagues have responded to the problems posed by food scarcity by opening milk stations and nutrition centers during the Great Depression to offering support for local food banks and Meals on Wheels programs today.

Several studies have revealed an interesting paradox, high prevalence of childhood obesity and malnourishment among those afflicted. The culprit: low-cost but energy-dense, low-nutritive foods and beverages. Lack of access to fresh foods because of distance to supermarkets with a variety of goods or lack of a means to reach those supermarkets leave families little choice but to fill up on these low-nutritive foods or to go without. The current economic recession has only made the problem worse and increased the rate of food insecurity.

Recognizing the link between obesity and food availability and the impact a lack of proper nutrition plays on learning, several Junior Leagues, including the JLNVB, have partnered with local schools and food banks to tackle the problem together. Here’s what some other Leagues have been doing to help combat childhood obesity.

The Junior League of Fort Collins works with the Poudre School District Snack Program to provide healthy snacks that members bundle and deliver to students participating in needs-based after-school programs at the district’s elementary schools.

The Junior League of San Antonio’s Food in Tummies (FIT) program provides the entire student population (800+) of Baty Elementary School with packs full of healthy food along with bilingual recipe cards and nutrition tips every week during the school year. food insecurity, the goals are improved school attendance school, improved body mass indexes (BMIs), and decreased mobility of families whose children take part in the National School Lunch Program.

The Junior League of Lubbock’s “Food 2 Kids” program provides sacks of shelf-stable foods to pupils at the 18 neediest elementary schools in the area. The goal is to expand the program to all of the 40 elementary schools in Lubbock.

The Junior League of Hartford’s Signature Project focuses on alleviating hunger through a weekend backpack program for 30 students at an elementary school in one of the city’s impoverished neighborhoods.

The Junior League of New Orleans’ Lagniappe Backpack Program provides schoolchildren who exhibit signs of malnourishment with backpacks filled with non-perishable food items for weekends and school holidays when they would otherwise not have regular nourishment.

The Junior League of Sioux City’s Food Bank Backpack Program puts food sacks in the backpack of students on Fridays so that they will have nutritious and child-friendly foods to prepare and eat over the weekend.

The Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. has spent three years working to improve childhood health and wellness through its Signature Issue, Healthy Kids Initiative. In the Fall of 2010, we introduced smaller mobile Kids in the Kitchen programs at local Boys and Girls Clubs throughout Hampton Roads where our volunteers showed children how to make a healthy snack, took a health quiz with them, and participated in fitness activities such as a food pyramid bean bag toss, shuttle run, and jump rope. Additionally, our new Girl Scout Patch Program, “It’s A Girl’s World” focuses on developing the potential of whole, healthy, confident girls and the activities required to earn the patch stress the importance of making good nutritional and fitness choices and having a healthy body image and strong self-esteem. We have a lot to look forward to in the Spring of 2011, including our large annual Kids in the Kitchen event as well as partnerships with FORKids at Suffolk House, CHKD, and Girls on the Run.

BJ’s & The JLNVB Bagging Domestic Abuse!

BJ’s Wholesale Club and JLNVB Partner to Benefit Residents of Samaritan House In December 2010, Ann Ostrander, Community Relations Specialist at BJ’s Wholesale Club, and JLNVB members Maryann McChesney-Shaw and Melissa Foglia prepared 30 welcome bags for residents of the Samaritan House. The festive welcome bags contained personal care items that were donated by BJ’s Wholesale Club, such as shampoo and conditioner, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, razors and shaving cream, hand sanitizer, Q-Tips, and lotion. JLNVB Community Vice President Brenda Christy then presented the bags to the Samaritan House with Ms. Ostrander.

The Samaritan House is a shelter located in Virginia Beach that serves local homeless families as well as women and children whose lives are disrupted by domestic abuse. For more information on the Samaritan House, visit www.samaritanhouseva.org.

Home For The Holidays December 2010 Tour

The Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. has been proud to call the Taylor-Whittle House its headquarters since the 1980s. Each December, the Junior League opens the grandly decorated front door of 227 West Freemason Street to the public to give Hampton Roads residents the opportunity to take a tour and get a glimpse of American life in the late 1700s. The temperatures on Sunday, December 12, 2010 were mild for the time of year, and the skies threatened rain. Despite the weather, a steady number of visitors participated in the Tour and as guests entered the foyer, they were greeted by JLNVB members serving as docents. As people toured the house, they listened to presentations on the building’s architectural and historical significance. A favorite place for guests to stop was the original dining room where they could enjoy a cup a fresh hot cider and sample homemade delicacies from the Junior League’s award-winning cookbooks, Toast to Tidewater and Tidewater on the Halfshell.

Visitors also enjoyed the traditional and natural atmosphere created by the distinctive decorations handmade by Junior League members specifically for the Taylor-Whittle House. Members spent several hours Friday and Saturday creating festive adornments from materials that were, for the most part, collected from their own backyards or donated from generous sponsors such as Terra Firma and The Norfolk Farm Market. The materials used are native and common to the area and include varieties of Magnolia leaves, holly, ivy, cedar, boxwood, oyster shells, pheasant feathers, and much more. These are items that could have been available for late 18th and early 19th century residents to use in decorating. League member’s interpretations of traditional holiday décor added elegant details to this architectural gem and gave the house an authentic period look. To spice things up this year, members also entwined beautiful ornate spoons from the League’s silver collection in the greenery to add a unique and creative sparkle.

The Taylor-Whittle House has been designated as a Historic Landmark of Virginia and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Taylor-Whittle House is one of the gems of the region and represents one of the finest expressions of Federal-style architecture in the Tidewater Virginia.

The Taylor-Whittle House is available for parties, meetings and photography sessions.

New Members Spread Cheer Transfers, First-Year Actives and Provisionals

Transition Committee Holiday Social and Cookie Exchange First-Year Actives and Transfers gathered on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the 201 Twenty-one Apartments Club Room for a Holiday Social and Cookie Exchange. The women enjoyed great conversation and an excellent assortment of delicious cookies! Light appetizers and lively beverages were served and enjoyed by all. Laura Bangor, Membership Vice President, developed a great summary handout with important information from the Bylaws, Policies and Procedures to answer Membership-related questions.

Provisionals Host Christmas Party at The Ronald McDonald House On Sunday, December 13, 2010, eleven members of the JLNVB Provisional Class completed their DoneIn-A-Day (DIAD) project at the Ronald McDonald House Christmas Party. The Christmas Party was held for the children and families staying at the Ronald McDonald House this year. The Provisional members were responsible for not only the set-up and clean-up of the event, but also planned many of the fun activities for the children and families. All of the guests were greeted and signed in by Adrianna Rivera.

Tracey Milne, Andrea Kennedy, and Maura Boswell helped serve lunch to the families and guests.

Children were able to have their faces painted by our very own talented artists, Janelle Hamilton and LeAnn Bradbury. While children were telling Santa Claus their many wishes for this Christmas, Hope Keys was the official Santa photographer capturing great memories! Little elves - also known as Katie Petchel, Jessica Harbin, Kristen O’Connor, and Stephanie Givens - helped children shop and wrap Christmas gifts for parents and siblings.

A great time was had by families, guests, employees, and especially the members of our Provisional Class!

October 2010 Luncheon “Confessions of a Volunteeraholic” Presented by Junior League of Miami Past President Jane Short This year’s first Passion into Action Luncheon took place on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at Norfolk’s Town Point Club. Over 25 women gathered to hear Sustainer and Past President of the Junior League of Miami, Jane Short, speak on the topic of being a “volunteeraholic.” Attendees were not disappointed as Jane shared how important her experiences as a volunteer have been in her life. She expanded upon her volunteerism with the Junior League and how invaluable the Junior League was to her during her many moves throughout the United States. We are so honored to have Jane as a member of our Hampton Roads community. She is an amazing resource for the JLNVB and we thank her for always being there to lend a friendly ear or a helping hand. Jane, we sincerely thank you!

Tidewater On The Halfshell Spiced Tea

1 quart water 1 stick cinnamon 2/3 tsp. whole cloves 3 tea bags ½ - ¾ cup sugar 1½ cups unsweetened pineapple juice 2 cups unsweetened orange juice • • • • • • • • •

Bring water to a boil, add spices Simmer 10 minutes Remove spices, add tea Allow to steep for 10 minutes Remove tea bags Add sugar and juices Serve tea warm Tea may be refrigerated but do not boil when reheating Recipe yields 2 quarts

Sisterhood of the Traveling...Glove?

As part of the “From White Gloves To Work Gloves” education campaign, members take photos with a white glove when they’re around town conducting “JLNVB” business. Where has the white glove been lately? It was last spotted on December 5, 2010 at Nordstrom’s Café in downtown Norfolk with the JLNVB Board! Keep an eye out for it to appear at any time and be sure to keep up with JLNVB on Facebook and Twitter.

Excellence Girls’ Club, Inc. Celebrates 10 Years!

Excellence Girls’ Club, Inc. (EGC) celebrated their 10 year anniversary with a luncheon at the Hampton Roads Convention Center on November 6, 2010. JLNVB Sustainer Vickie Madison founded EGC in 2000 to empower young women by exposing them to positive experiences while developing leadership skills that will enhance their ability to become future leaders in the community. In 2005, JLNVB selected Excellence Girls’ Club as our 3-Year Signature Project and supported EGC’s weekly educational sessions, the annual bonding retreats, mother/daughter sessions and field trips, book discussions, and community service projects. The League’s legacy to EGC was the funding and professional development of their website www.excellencegirlsclub.org. We continue to partner with EGC today by hosting their annual career fair and members from both organizations work together to support JLNVB’s Healthy Kids Initiative and Kids in the Kitchen event. To date, Excellence Girls’ Club, Inc. has served over 300 girls. Caressa Cameron, Miss America 2010 and Miss Virginia 2009, served as the luncheon’s keynote speaker sharing her motivational story. Additionally, pioneer awards were presented to Ashby C. Kilgore, Rosanne Walters, Wendy Harvey and Patricia Hochnadel for being instrumental in launching, supporting and providing assistance to Excellence Girls’ Club, Inc. JLNVB President Kimberly Thompson served as the Mistress of Ceremonies for the luncheon.
